Bruce Luyendyk

Bruce Luyendyk is an American geologist, marine geophysicist, Antarctic researcher and Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Over a career spanning four decades, his work has taken him from deep-sea hydrothermal vents to the geology of California, New Zealand and West Antarctica. On his first Antarctic expedition in 1989, Bruce and his team found evidence for the sunken continent beneath New Zealand, which he later named Zealandia. A Fellow of the GSA, AGU and AAAS, he has made nine Antarctic visits, had Mount Luyendyk named in his honour, and wrote Mighty Bad Land, a memoir of science, risk and fieldwork at the bottom of the world.
