CEO Meets Homeschool with Timea Parker
Episode 90: Firing a Mentor
Welcome to season two of CEO Meets Homeschool. My name is Timia Parker, and I'm both a CEO and homeschool mom to my four boys. Welcome to episode 90. Right now I am reading a book that's called What's In It For Them, by Joe Polish. He's a pretty successful entrepreneur and. In the book he had spoken about, if you have more of a kind or generous nature, you will definitely be taken advantage of. And this is coming from like a incredibly successful entrepreneur business person. And I found that really encouraging because I wanna share about an experience that I've recently gone through and I've noticed I have a hard time sort of measuring. Sharing experiences, but also being careful in the event that that person listens to this. Anyway, it's a fine line, so hopefully I get it right. I might not get this right and we'll just move on, but I, I'm gonna put mentor in the, the title, but it's, this is not really a mentor, but I did make a connection with somebody in this past year, and I was pretty excited about this because. To summarize, they're a great person. Just very successful, professional, great family kind of dynamics. But here's where I'm gonna try to summarize. So I made this connection and this person is connected to a pretty big organization and they help review business deals. And so when I had made this connection somehow. I got like the direct number or connection so I can connect with this person as opposed to other people waiting in line to show this business deal. So I've had some really great conversations with them and I realized over the course of making this connection and I was really excited to learn and I used the word to be mentored even though it wasn't an official mentor. I wanted to learn. I've been kind of isolated, homeschooling my kids, running my business, and so I realized I kind of forget sometimes that I do have 20 years myself. So I'm sitting in this environment wanting to learn, and there was a few things that ended up happening that I thought, you know, I have an idea of how I want to grow my business. But sometimes when you have an opportunity to connect with people that may seem further ahead, you will set aside some of the processes or even the values, or even your God-given talents because they're saying this is the right way or the only way to do that. And so long story short, something like that basically happened in my conversation and I realized something doesn't sit right. Because here are all these people lined up to get this input from this high achiever. And I am like, I don't agree or want this info. So it's hard to sometimes say no when you've been given an opportunity. And so I ended up quote unquote, he wasn't a true mentor, but I ended up firing this mentor saying, I've gotten to a place where I realize this is not the course for me and I'm stepping away from it. And I think that's really hard to do because a lot of times we see what everyone else is doing and we feel like this is a good opportunity. I shouldn't say no. And often that's exactly what you should do because if you have a one of a kind idea or a gift, no one else is gonna completely understand what it is that you can do. But you might go seeking advice from others and they will give it. And it might take you away from the path that you're meant to, to go down. So that was, that was my effort of doing episode 90 on saying I went down a road and I realized this is not the best fit. And then you have to kind of remove yourself and the sooner you identify. Maybe like connections that are not meant to be. And remove yourself the better off you'll be. A lot of times you'll stay in connections, relationships, you know, networking groups, and you should, once you identify this, you should break away. So I hope everyone has a great day. If you have enjoyed today's episode, please consider liking and subscribing. This will help me reach more CEOs and homeschoolers. Thanks so much.
