Recovery requires a purpose. Recovery institutes a new mission for life. For me it simply means helping someone other than myself each and everyday. There is true happiness in giving. Giving of yourself is accentually rewarding. It invokes a inner satisfaction. A inner peace, a fulfillment. A warmth of acceptance. A purpose and agenda of true meaning. When giving is the mission, life becomes the reward. The gift of giving of oneself, propels one to learn more so you can know more, to give more. Knowledge is a gift from God. To know truth is a hand out from the God of understanding The more you learn the more you have to give. The message is the gift. Seeking truth in all you do is rewarding in and of itself. Truth comes from God to know God is a blessing. To receive from the bounty that is God. To eat at the table that God has prepared for you is like no other lesson you can ever learn. Listen as Trent details his life mission for giving.

SPEAKER_00Welcome to the Recovery is a Process of Decisions podcast. This is Trent Thomas, your recovery peer support specialist. This week's episode is entitled Recovery Means Living for Something Other Than Myself. Living for Something Other Thyself is what keeps me sober and grounded. In order to deal with plans that fail or unintended consequences, even criticism or hateful projection, I am able to smile and rise above the struggle and gain inner strength and courage by recognizing that I do not live for my own will, but rather I am a willing player in the proceedings orchestrated by the God of my understanding. My daily activity is invoked by the power I get from God. In fact, my very next breath is by the permission of God, His will, His way all the time. Each day is His blessing, the gift of a new life, new beginning brought about by God. There is no doubt in my mind that I have been spared the severe consequences of my bad past decisions in order to live today a new existence, a new opportunity to just do better, to improve, to learn more, learn better, to teach and give freely. My life is the culmination of all my past bad decisions. Every struggle I have encountered has been absolutely necessary for me to evolve into what I am today. My good, bad, and otherwise has produced the new me. What I have become is shaped and fashioned into a recovery-based man. A man complete with faults and failings, indicative of a man who suffers from the disease of addiction. I am and will always be susceptible to anything that looks or feels good. I must on a daily basis put the treatment of this disease first because I know if this disease rears its ugly head, then all bets are off and nothing will matter. My disease does not give up because of the consequences. Losses are not enough to stop the disease of addiction. The losses of family, job, money, career, even my life is not enough to dissuade the disease of addiction. Overdoses occur in spite of the fact one may have just watched a person OD and die right in front of them. The compelling to continue on no matter the outcome is the destructive nature of the disease of addiction, thus proving the slogan that states the disease of addiction once you dead. Addiction is self deception. The first lie is to yourself. Then you begin lying to everyone you come in contact with. Addiction is powerful. However, God is all powerful and nothing can overcome the power of my God. Relying on the God of my understanding, I am rarely able to overcome depression and anxiety. I do because I believe. He can make a way out of no way. This belief, I keep moving toward God, never giving up, never backing down, never wavering. Faith is my walking stick. It is faith that I lean on, that I use for support and to clear my path. I know what I know, but God knows all. Because of this, I don't have to have all the answers. I can readily say, I don't know. I don't have the answer, and it's alright. With God, for me, it's already alright. Each new day is a new opportunity to just do better, to improve, accomplish the most by helping as many as I can. My mission, my life. There is true happiness in helping someone other than yourself. Happiness in merit, a reason for living, doing better by helping others, a right way to live, to recover, to improve.
