We share our story of Podcasting and Marriage

Kimberly Blakes Brings The Kingdom Minute

The NP is IN

SPEAKER_01

Doc and Carolyn Podcast, episode 137.

SPEAKER_04

Here we are again.

SPEAKER_01

You know we're married. Do you know of any other married couples that do a uh a podcast famous and like a like a big time podcast like this one?

SPEAKER_04

Uh not off the top of my head.

SPEAKER_01

And I think it's a little bit of an accomplishment that for 137 weeks, this is episode 137. If you think about it, and we and we had a couple of archive episodes, a couple weeks where we were traveling. Right. We didn't do one, but yeah. For 137 weeks, we get together every week at this desk.

SPEAKER_04

Yep.

SPEAKER_01

And and that's you know, for a married couple, you understand the challenge in that.

SPEAKER_04

Well, of course I see it.

unknown

Right.

SPEAKER_04

I think we do a lot better now, though, than we did in the beginning.

SPEAKER_01

If you were a fly on the wall, because Carolyn was all in and I have two thoughts here. One, you were always nervous then. You were you were always anxious about doing it. And I and I would always encourage you by saying, you know, you just have to be yourself. Or or did I no, no, what was it?

SPEAKER_04

You wanted me to perform. And I don't know how to be anyone but myself. That's why I'm not an actress. Right. Once I guess you finally just decided I'm just not gonna be anybody but myself, you settled for it.

SPEAKER_01

Well, what you're what you're saying is absolute is the truth. And I'm a I'm a little bit handicapped by the fact that I was, I was, I was a professional broadcaster before. Right. Because this is a completely different format.

SPEAKER_04

Yes, radio is way different than this.

SPEAKER_01

I kind of have the thought that you, I don't want to say don't know how to do commercial, like like to like to do the DJ part of it.

SPEAKER_04

Right.

SPEAKER_01

But you do. But here's the point. The second point that I was going to make is that you have uh I was gonna say an ability to be yourself. You are authentically you no matter what. There's no pretense in you at all. That's true. And but that but that but that translates beautifully into podcasting. For me, there was uh there was a uh a vice president of the first when I when I first moved to Houston from Cincinnati, this is a top four market. And so in radio, that's a big deal, especially for an aspiring broadcaster. I had, you know, I was a news person in Cincinnati and was doing some part-time uh DJ work in Cincinnati and caught the attention of this outfit down here, and uh a couple of guys that left the station that I worked at in Cincinnati and moved down to Houston ahead of me. And my dad lived here. My dad moved down here.

SPEAKER_04

So did they, the people who moved here before you, did they like put your name in the hat or something?

SPEAKER_01

Probably. I think so. I got more comfortable over time, and I had people that that took an interest in my career and kind of guided me. People like Harry Lyles, Brian Castle, uh, pretty big names in urban radio at the time. And they kind of took uh took me under their wings and taught me how to do it. So by the time Houston called, I was I was kind of ready for it. And they needed somebody to come down for 10 to 2 at night. And in a big city, that's still a big slot, you know. Right. And to leave the 33rd market, I think Cincinnati was 33. So to leave 33 and go to number four was uh I mean, it was a dream come true. I just couldn't believe it. But there was a guy, the vice president of that station was his name was Monty Lang. And there are broadcasters, I mean prominent broadcasters that know that name and know who he is. And he is the one that that hired me as a gosh, I was in my 20s, I was in Cincinnati. I didn't know anything. I didn't, I I didn't know I knew a little bit about Cincinnati and not that much.

SPEAKER_04

It would have been interesting to know you in your 20s. I don't know that I would have.

SPEAKER_01

Well, you weren't that that far away. I mean, we met, gosh, a long time ago. We met you were in we worked at the same radio station.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, you were in your 30s when I met you.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so no, not not much to see there at 20, not much to see at all.

SPEAKER_04

I just think about the story you tell about um, you know, meeting Ed. That's his name, right?

SPEAKER_01

Ed Grice, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, and how you were a little full of yourself. Saying, you know, I don't do very well with those kinds of people. So I just wonder how it would have taken you.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I I think part of that was was the necessity to perform though. You can't you can't go in front of an audience without being confident, without being you can't be terrified and do that work. So, in order to have the courage to stand in front of people and talk and to get in front of a microphone and talk to thousands and thousands of people, I you know, you have to have a certain amount of confidence about that.

SPEAKER_04

Right.

SPEAKER_01

But back on point.

SPEAKER_04

Except me, I just do it without it.

SPEAKER_01

Well, yeah, and and and you're so good at it. So, so in commercial radio, you have to hit marks, you have to hit for the quarter hours. Right. So you get very good at at bridging the gap between the song and the commercial. That's really, you know, maybe 30 seconds of of planning, and you know, you have to do preparation if you're gonna do something entertaining, something funny, uh tell a story, whatever. You had to concise it in brevity, was the main thing in commercial radio, at least then. Um there was uh an episode in, I'm sure back in the zoo days. Remember back in when radio was very DJ focused, and they would and then it went from that from very DJ focused where the DJs were the star of the show, where it was like 10 songs in a row, you know, 10, you know, we we just play music and yeah, country stations did that, except it during drive time.

SPEAKER_04

Then it was a lot of DJ stuff, and I always wanted them just to shut up and play the music.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yeah, I mean, I get that. I definitely get it now, especially. Yeah, um, for podcasting, you just have the perfect personality, I think, because you have an ability just to be you and and you're funny without trying to be. I don't know. It's it's wonderful. And and the nice thing about being- What does that mean?

SPEAKER_04

An ability just to be me. I mean, that's just kind of because everybody has the ability just to be themselves.

SPEAKER_01

Not really. I because I struggle with it. I'll tell you why, because when I moved down here from Cincinnati, I was in my 20s. I, like I said, I was literally a kid in many ways. Uh, had really no life experience. I Cincinnati was the only town I'd visited. Um, I think, you know, I'd maybe gone on some trips with my parents, but as an adult, I didn't know anything. So I came down here and uh this shy kid had to suddenly stand in front of audiences. There was no training. I didn't go to go to college for broadcasting where I where I went through four years of formative per of personality development. I showed up and suddenly, you know, uh I remember going to do a concert, and there was like, I don't know, 8,000 people in the audience, and they were like, Okay, you're the DJ, okay, here's the mic. Oh my goodness. And and I and the way I got, um, I mean, I was, yeah, I mean, that that that was part of the job.

SPEAKER_04

And so the only reason I can do this is because I'm just talking to you.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

As far as my brain knows.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so I had to learn how to how to how to how to be a DJ. And and I, by the time I got here, by the by the time I got to Houston, I got comfortable enough to be uh a DJ. I could be on the air and I could talk and I could string the thoughts together and put it together with the music and make it uh entertaining. But the part about standing in front of audiences, that was part of it too. You had to go out and do personal appearances. We had people that were paying us handsomely to go out, like if Kroger had a grand opening of a Kroger, you know, that's that's a lot of how the DJ would make money. You know, they'd pay us, I mean, shoot, I mean, at one point I was getting 150 bucks an hour, and this goes back to the 90s. Oh, goodness. You know, just to show up and meet and greet and all that. But you have to have a personality to do that. And if you're naturally kind of shy or introverted, you don't naturally gravitate to people and what's going on. I'm Doc Kilgore from the radio station, what's happening? And and and develop dialogue. And and I got good at that after a while, but then I became very performative-minded. I didn't meet people and then just try to be Ken. I had to show up and be the DJ. I had to be Doc. I had to, and and that was so far outside of my comfort zone, but I had to do it. I had to, I had to put myself in that mindset.

SPEAKER_04

I think so. I'm assuming that's why you get stressed when we're going, especially if you're gonna be around people that you don't know very well.

SPEAKER_01

Well, you're not supposed to talk about that on the podcast. That's for us. Yeah, so that's why your knees are shaking when you meet strangers. No, it isn't that. It's I you know, it's just the weirdest thing because after broadcasting, obviously, I became a police officer. After, you know, 15 years of being a professional broadcaster, then uh the Lord took me into policing. So now all of that grow, you know, forcing myself to stand in front of people to be performative and to be personable uh as a as a broadcast entertainer. Now I'm learning don't let anybody on your six. You got to keep people, you know, uh uh, you know, good distance. You have to have conceal and cover and all of these uh police tactics. I had to superimpose that on top of the performative personality that I developed for the radio career, and Ken was somewhere lost in the in the mix. And and like I said, working with you is is wonderful because I get a chance to see you just kind of get in front of the mic and be yourself. And and well, that's nice to hear.

SPEAKER_04

Well, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Well, the f well see, uh but the fact that we're having this conversation is proof of growth on my part because I keep thinking Monty's gonna get me.

SPEAKER_04

But you have to think about the really big podcast like Joe Rogan, he just has a conversation with the person that's there for hours sometimes.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. And he he's a great, and there are many others. I mean, there there are so many good podcasters out there, and um, to kind of sit back and chat like this rather than always uh drive towards a break, right? You know, which is kind of my uh my instinct. Before we go to our Kingdom Minute with Kimberly Blakes, why don't you tell me what's up with uh truehealinghealthcare.net and the nurse practitioning business.

SPEAKER_04

My business is going really well, and I am doing that class for the bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.

SPEAKER_01

The certification, and you are really dedicating a lot of time to that. Is it um complicated, would you say?

SPEAKER_04

Uh women and hormones, yeah, pretty complicated.

SPEAKER_01

Wow. Do you do do you rely on your body of knowledge your existing body of knowledge, or do you have to pick up a whole new No, I mean I am learning a lot of new things, but yeah, a lot of foundational things are there already. Is it um is it life-changing? I don't know wh why I think of it that way, but it looks like if you're having an issue with hormones, I mean we're chemical pe you know, people are chemical beings anyway, right?

SPEAKER_04

So how and when people think about their hormones, they always think about their sex hormones like estrogen and progesterone and testosterone, but um cortisol and uh vitamin D isn't a hormone, it just acts like one. But anyway, all of your hormones uh work together. So if one thing is out of balance, everything's out of balance. So yeah, you can have some pretty severe symptoms, especially well, men too, but you know everybody knows about women and menopause and the hot flashes and not being able to sleep and all of that. But estrogen starts dropping off in your 30s.

SPEAKER_01

So those uh classes are comprising an expansion of TrueHealing Healthcare.net.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, offering more services, yes.

SPEAKER_01

And so you will um complete this and be eligible, and when will people be able to log on and and find out more?

SPEAKER_04

Um, I'm thinking I should be finished with it. I'm hoping in just a couple of weeks.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we'll and we'll make the announcements.

SPEAKER_04

Right, yeah. I'm Carolyn Kilgore, founder and provider at TrueHealing Healthcare.net.

SPEAKER_01

Why functional medicine?

SPEAKER_04

Because you're more than just a list of symptoms. Traditional care often masks the problem, but functional medicine digs deeper to find the root cause.

SPEAKER_01

What makes true healing health care different?

SPEAKER_04

We move away from the one-size-fits-all approach. We look at your environment and your lifestyle to create a roadmap tailored specifically for you.

SPEAKER_01

What if someone really wants to make a change?

SPEAKER_04

If you're tired of feeling fine and want to start feeling great, it's about proactive wellness, not just reactive treatment.

SPEAKER_01

What's the deal with telemedicine?

SPEAKER_04

As long as you're 18 and have an internet connection, you can have a visit in the privacy of your own home or anywhere else in Texas. We're able to order labs or prescribe or whatever else you need.

SPEAKER_01

True Healing Healthcare.net for the great state of Texas. What do you think about the content of some of the we've been watching uh Succession.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It's on Prime or HBO, I think. And you know, do y'all do y'all watch, especially being a Christian? Listen, we're Christians, we're disciples of Jesus. And so when you watch some of these shows, is it has a it has a it's gotten worse, right? It's not just me.

SPEAKER_04

No, I don't think it's just you.

SPEAKER_01

I think it's but they are sh when did they start showing full on frontal new male nudity? When did they start that?

SPEAKER_04

I I so I don't know when they I mean on HBO, I don't know how long has it been going on on HBO, but um that wasn't an actual, it was a what difference does it make? I know it doesn't, but but I'm just saying the actor was didn't you know expose himself. I yeah, it was bad, and I wasn't expecting it, and I mean that was the only time I saw it.

SPEAKER_01

So we as as Christians, we're so we are in the world, we're not of the world. Correct. However, we can't divorce it, you know, just like if you're in your office, if you go into the and and you're going to hear language that is that is coarse, that is not um always going to uh uh you know agree with your spirit, and that's going to go on and on. Maybe it's different if you volunteer this, but it's something to be aware of. It's something, especially make sure that your parental controls are on your television if you have.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, because I mean you can just be watching a show and it's all fine, and then boom, everything's right there in your face.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

You're not expecting it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's um I don't know. I struggle with it, and maybe that's that's when you turn the TV off if you start to struggle with it. I don't know. Maybe why'd you get quiet?

SPEAKER_04

I was just thinking about um because I mean for the most part I watch things that are Oh yeah, your your little house on the prairie and right. But I do like girls. I watched Yellowstone and then I that was bad.

SPEAKER_01

That's another yeah, uh that's another one.

SPEAKER_04

And then I don't think Dutton Ranch is as bad as that. Do you?

SPEAKER_01

Not yet. I mean, we're on what this is season two that just came out. All of this stuff.

SPEAKER_04

No, that was season one, first season.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, well, all of this stuff is Taylor Sheridan's uh material. He's um you know, and he and it looks wholesome compared to everything else that's out there because he has horses on all of his shows, and the horses horses just seem wholesome.

SPEAKER_04

Correct.

SPEAKER_01

So um I don't know, just be wary.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I mean I don't advise watching any of that stuff.

SPEAKER_01

And the one about secession, the writing is uh I mean there isn't a lot of um gratuitous ne nudity and that kind of thing, but gee whiz, the writing, the language and the I don't know, man.

SPEAKER_04

It's they're just not nice to each other either. Like the family, they're always backstabbing and it's just awful.

SPEAKER_01

The we just played the we just played the Bible. We just played the book of Revelation, chapter one.

SPEAKER_04

Did everybody not everybody did some people did we lose some people?

SPEAKER_01

The the stuff that we and I and I said this a little bit of this last week, but the stuff that we just come out of, that we come out of the starting gates with, um we don't do it God's way. And even and if you try to, you know what they say about people that that follow Jesus that are that are really um working to become disciples of of Jesus and learn his way and and and say, listen, my righteousness is never going to get it done. It's never going to be, no matter how much good I do, it's not gonna be enough.

SPEAKER_04

For a filthy rag.

SPEAKER_01

Right. And and um I have to depend on Yeshua. But when you do that, what is the what does the world call you? And and I say the world, but what is our culture? You know, it's a you oh, you're a holy roller now. Oh, you're a Bible thumper. The Bible thumper. The Bible thumper. What a thing to say, right? Well, this is the author of life, and these like you I don't thump my Bible, I read it. Yeah. I mean, it's it's but it's but it's just those little things to kind of push you away as early as possible from from making this the path. You know, it's it's it's uh pushing you and directing you to go every direction but towards um the creator, towards the anything that's biblical, the world tells you to do the opposite. Exactly.

SPEAKER_04

And anything, and we suffer for it.

SPEAKER_01

We suffer. And I don't know about you, and well, we talk about this all the time, but when you look around, the I tell I can't tell you a great example. People are behaving in a way, and you know, yeah, I think we have to remember that the Hasan asylums used to be full.

SPEAKER_04

They're yes, they did, and they need to be filled right back up.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I'm serious, there were people, and even when I first came on the police department, we had a place where we could take and enroll people who were violent mental um patients. And uh through legislation and some ambitious lawyers, plus I think a desire to steal, I'm finding that this compassion is in empathy. A lot of it is weaponized and it's set up as a uh tool to get to separate people from their money. It's about that simple.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, I have no doubt about that. With all the all the fraud that we already knew existed, but now has been exposed.

SPEAKER_01

I know that the Bible is sometimes difficult to understand, but here's what we can do. When you listen to this, just pray about it. Ask the Lord for for uh for illumination, for understanding. The book of Revelation, chapter two. I did get, I did get um meta-ai to give me an overview of Revelations 2. So let's take a break for the Kingdom Minute and we'll be right back.

SPEAKER_02

Welcome to this Kingdom Minute with your host, Kimberly Blakes on the Doc and Carolyn podcast. When you are rooted and grounded in Christ, the enemy will always challenge your identity. That's how he came to Jesus. If you are the Son of God, that's what he said. He's he's challenging us. He wants to know who do you think you are? Who are you? And so when you really know who you are in Christ, you can choose the high road. You don't have to choose victimhood. You could live as a victor every single time, no matter the circumstance. And so I just want to encourage you. You are a victor. You are a victor in Christ. You are rooted and grounded in him. You are seated with him in heavenly places. You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. It doesn't matter if you're black or white, Jew or Greek, male or female. We are all the same in the body of Christ, and he is the head of the body. Thank you for tuning in to this Kingdom Minute with your host, Kimberly Blakes, on the Doc and Carolyn podcast. You can find me on Facebook at Kimberly Blakes, and I also have a podcast called The Faith Frame Perspective. I'll see you guys there.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so the things that you see on your feed, like if you're on social media, that the that people's behavior is becoming more bizarre. Is that am I imagining this? Do you think?

SPEAKER_04

You're not imagining it at all.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, just crazy stuff. Uh, like I I was reading today, and we have um listeners, we have uh downloads in Argentina, Chile, South America, down through there. And this story just came out yesterday. This flight instructor, like flying a Cessna, like a small aircraft instructor, takes a student up for a uh instructional flight. He does his thing, however long that takes, lands the plane, picks up a new student. So the new students going up with the flight instructor, and he's out doing his instructor thing. And at some point during the flight, they're headed back, I believe, to uh to the airport. The flight instructor says, Well, looks like you're doing well. I think you got this, and opens the door to the uh of the plane and just jumps out.

SPEAKER_04

What in the world? With no shoot.

SPEAKER_01

What just jumps out? So the the student, the student pilot, you know, let the tower know and then went and landed the plane without the flight instructor.

SPEAKER_04

Well, thank goodness she knew how to land the plane.

SPEAKER_01

But and and you know it's funny, I was talking to a uh to a to a uh brother officer. This is before I retired. And by the way, this is my this is this is a happy day because it happens to be um uh four years this month that I walked away from professional policing.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I bet I'm happier about it than you are.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but I was talking, I was yeah, I know you are. Thank you. I was um talking to a uh a brother officer, brother sergeant, actually, and I was saying, do you think that things are that are cultural. That human beings in the culture are better now than they were 20 years ago.

SPEAKER_04

No.

SPEAKER_01

Do you think we're evolving as people? Do you think we're getting better? Do you think of the the basics and the characteristics of human behavior are improving over time? No.

SPEAKER_04

No, we're living in idiocracy right now.

SPEAKER_01

It's crazy. It's crazy. And um, you know, everybody sees it, but you don't know what to do about it. And I think that's why we turn to the Bible. Revelation chapter 2.

SPEAKER_00

To the church in Ephesus. These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands. I know your deeds, your hard work, and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you, you have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen, repent, and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. But you have this in your favor, you hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God. To the church in Smyrna. These are the words of him who is the first and the last, who died and came to life again. I know your afflictions and your poverty, yet you are rich. I know about the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor's crown. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be heard at all by the second death, but to the church in Pergamum. These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword. I know where you live where Satan has his throne, yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city where Satan lives. Nevertheless, I have a few things against you, there are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin, so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality. Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Repent, therefore, otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it. To the church in Thyatira. These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze. I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first. Nevertheless, I have this against you, you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching, she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds. Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan's so-called deep secrets, I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come. To the one who is victorious and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations that one will rule them with an iron scepter, and will dash them to pieces like pottery, just as I have received authority from my father. I will also give that one the morning star. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

I started hammock solutions inside of a small incubator back in 2022. Somebody calls and has a virus or something like that, they can get it removed, or if I need data restoration or anything like that.

SPEAKER_01

You went to our page. Did you start to weep, or what was your response?

SPEAKER_03

I did notice a few issues that needed to be fixed. Your copyright on the bottom of the screen was kind of over some object. I kind of fixed that. I added an archive page and kind of build it up a little bit. Most of my business that has to do with software, anything that can be done remotely, I'll typically do it remotely. How can someone get a hold of you if they have an issue that you can fix with them? They can find us on Facebook under Hammock Solutions. They can do a general search for Hammock Solutions 936-229-0269. We typically access through WhatsApp or directly to the Lions.
