00:00:49.559 what's most frustrating to us and that's

00:00:54.640 also can come up in very silly ways in

00:01:02.559 their dress or when you're trying to
00:01:05.000 figure out how to get your kid into

00:01:52.119 I've been thinking about this a lot and
00:01:55.159 I I didn't consciously realize how much
00:01:58.000 gatekeeping was happening early in my
00:02:00.320 career but I remember specifically the
00:02:03.759 first job that I ever had that one that
00:02:05.520 I quit very quickly the first corporate
00:02:07.439 job I ever had that I hated because it
00:02:09.199 was like a monkey job I was supposed to
00:02:11.760 be watching trade details come in
00:02:14.519 through this Command Center at Morgan
00:02:17.599 Stanley and when there were details that
00:02:20.760 were off I had to catch those details
00:02:23.000 and fix them before the date the trade
00:02:25.120 was supposed to close because if it if
00:02:27.519 there were details that were incorrect
00:02:28.840 on the close date it the trade would
00:02:30.319 fail and a bunch of Traders would lose a
00:02:32.280 bunch of money and they would call and
00:02:33.879 yell at me and they did it happened a
00:02:35.800 lot oh gosh no wonder you cried every
00:02:37.640 night it was awful awful um so it was
00:02:42.200 not a hard job but it was tedious and I
00:02:45.680 had this Mentor that was assigned to me
00:02:48.319 and I would ask her I asked her on
00:02:50.040 multiple occasions how do you finish she
00:02:52.920 was always done with her work really
00:02:54.440 quickly and she would just be messing
00:02:55.599 around on the computer doing things she
00:02:57.000 wanted to do like reading articles
00:02:58.440 catching up on current events
00:03:01.200 reading pop culture things I wanted to
00:03:03.879 be doing as a 22-year-old and I asked
00:03:07.000 her a couple times how she finished so
00:03:09.239 quickly like what am I doing wrong why
00:03:11.280 is this taking me so long and she would
00:03:13.480 just
00:03:14.319 say oh put in your time you'll figure it
00:03:17.760 out put in your time you'll figure it
00:03:19.239 out and I never understood that because
00:03:22.920 when I was asking for help on how to be
00:03:25.760 more efficient it's not like it would
00:03:27.720 have made her slower yeah if she told me
00:03:29.879 how to be quicker MH it would have done

00:03:33.280 to like make her look worse yeah if
00:03:36.799 anything it's that's just so dismissive

00:03:53.000 think a lot of times
00:03:55.599 we people feel threatened and they're
00:03:58.360 like you can't get I'm the best here and
00:04:01.159 I don't want to show you my skills
00:04:03.439 because then you're gonna be competition
00:04:05.280 to me or I'm gonna have to like they
00:04:07.319 don't want gonna get better than me or
00:04:09.280 yeah you know they don't want to share
00:04:10.879 their secret sauce yeah that's true I
00:04:15.760 personally don't I I understand what
00:04:18.399 you're saying but I personally just I
00:04:20.600 don't like that energy yeah no
00:04:22.639 definitely I don't like that energy
00:04:24.240 because I think that's just what that's
00:04:26.280 like what happens though that's like a
00:04:27.919 lot of the reason behind it and
00:04:30.360 mindset yeah I think there's a lot that
00:04:32.039 goes into that that like a lot of times
00:04:35.000 like there being not as many women in
00:04:38.080 the office or something and then you
00:04:39.160 feel like you're competing with the
00:04:41.080 other women it's just like kind of the
00:04:43.000 way that uh you know what I'm saying I
00:04:46.000 do know what you're saying I had an
00:04:47.360 interesting conversation with this very
00:04:49.320 successful corporate woman um last week
00:04:52.400 and I asked her we were catching up she
00:04:56.560 was generous and offered some of her
00:04:57.840 time we were catching up and she I asked
00:05:00.720 her that question has because she's way
00:05:02.639 ahead of me in her career by probably 15
00:05:05.360 to 20 years and she I asked her if she
00:05:08.320 had experiences earlier in her career
00:05:10.120 just along the way of women displaying
00:05:12.400 queen bee behavior which is basically
00:05:15.960 like gatekeeping not sharing information
00:05:18.120 of how to get better not pointing you
00:05:19.960 out in a room full of opportunities
00:05:21.720 things like that and she said she was
00:05:24.600 like I don't know if you're going to
00:05:26.800 like this answer but let me let me tell
00:05:30.120 you and I thought okay actually this is
00:05:32.000 very good for me to hear the perspective
00:05:33.440 of people of different generations and
00:05:34.840 she said that something she'd been
00:05:37.120 thinking about a lot recently was that
00:05:39.880 when you are in corporate and there are
00:05:42.240 not as many women at the top the women
00:05:44.800 that are that are there already almost
00:05:47.840 hold the women that are trying to come
00:05:49.440 up to a higher standard because they
00:05:51.840 believe that if a woman who is not as
00:05:55.520 good or doesn't have the skills yet or
00:05:57.720 isn't whatever trying as heart not as
00:06:00.039 good however you want to describe it
00:06:02.360 gets to the top it brings the perception
00:06:05.160 of the average of women down whereas if
00:06:09.560 you hold other women to a high
00:06:12.080 standard in general or a higher standard
00:06:14.440 than you might a man yeah
00:06:17.599 then when people think about women being
00:06:20.000 at the top their perception is only like
00:06:22.840 wow they're all badass they're all I
00:06:25.639 didn't really know what to say because I
00:06:27.240 feel like that's sort of perpet Ting the
00:06:30.599 problem that already exists although I
00:06:32.880 understand the thought process like yeah
00:06:34.479 maybe you're harder on somebody that you
00:06:35.800 really care about and you want to see
00:06:36.919 succeed because yeah you want to hold
00:06:38.599 them to a high standard but I thought
00:06:39.759 that was
00:06:40.960 a it's a generational thing like I do
00:06:44.120 think that what we're trying to do is
00:06:46.360 make a little little bit of a cultural
00:06:49.199 yeah help support a cultural mindset
00:06:50.680 shift that you don't actually have to be
00:06:52.440 that way yeah um but I was a little
00:06:55.800 shocked to hear that yeah that's
00:06:57.960 interesting that kind of like brings my
00:07:00.919 I don't know but it makes me think about
00:07:03.520 like with coffee and contracts we have
00:07:06.639 so many competitors at this point it's
00:07:08.639 very low cost of entry into creating
00:07:13.080 coffee and like a business like that and
00:07:15.360 so we have a ton of competitors and at
00:07:17.240 first I feel like I was very insecure
00:07:20.879 about them seeing what I'm doing and
00:07:22.520 them copying me and like all that kind
00:07:24.479 of stuff but I feel like I've gotten to
00:07:26.759 a point now where I've like even talked
00:07:28.960 with some other business owners who like
00:07:31.160 do the exact same thing as me like
00:07:32.599 there's plenty of room to go around
00:07:34.240 there's like not everyone that is not
00:07:38.280 like not everyone is going to be for me
00:07:40.000 there's enough for everyone to have
00:07:42.560 someone and people are going to like the
00:07:44.560 way that someone presents information
00:07:46.080 better and like the way someone does
00:07:48.199 something better and I think it also
00:07:50.080 helps us as an whole like all of us
00:07:53.840 competitors to like for all of us to be
00:07:56.520 doing well it means that our industry is
00:07:58.599 you know it's like the right Rising Tide
00:08:00.240 Rises All Ships so yeah that's something
00:08:02.840 I feel like I've been thinking about a
00:08:04.319 lot yeah it's a good point and there's
00:08:08.520 going to have to be a lot more work done
00:08:11.400 I think both in a from a cultural
00:08:13.639 standpoint but also just individuals
00:08:15.599 doing some work on themselves to feel
00:08:18.159 differently about helping others succeed
00:08:20.360 and being open-minded and sharing what's
00:08:23.840 working even if you are technically
00:08:25.319 competitors yeah I feel like there's so
00:08:27.800 much cor like this is a Karma thing you
00:08:30.560 know if you put out good energy and
00:08:32.320 abundant energy it's going to come back
00:08:33.760 around to you and so many people don't
00:08:35.399 live from that mindset can you define
00:08:38.000 gatekeeping just to make it very clear
00:08:40.479 yeah well real quick I feel like I have
00:08:41.799 a good story that's a really good
00:08:43.279 example of gatekeeping kind of or of the
00:08:46.160 opposite of gatekeeping an anti-
00:08:47.560 gatekeeper anti which I've kind of
00:08:49.320 talked about this when I talked to her
00:08:51.000 with Jasmine on my interview with her
00:08:53.920 but I applied for her Mastermind she was
00:08:56.320 doing a mastermind with like 15 business
00:08:58.519 owners or something something like that
00:09:00.519 I I applied for it filled in all my
00:09:02.120 business information in the back of my
00:09:03.800 head I was like she's probably not going
00:09:05.240 to accept or part of me was like she's
00:09:07.839 probably not going to accept me because
00:09:09.760 our businesses are so similar if you
00:09:11.480 don't know she has a very similar
00:09:13.399 business to mine it's like for the
00:09:14.880 general population and mine is like just
00:09:16.680 for real estate agents but they're like
00:09:18.120 very similar and so in the back of my
00:09:20.680 head I was like uh she may not accept
00:09:24.000 this like mine because I'm so similar to
00:09:25.920 her she may not like that like I've
00:09:27.079 never met her like she you know yeah but
00:09:29.839 um and then the other part of my brain
00:09:32.000 was like she is like so like up here and
00:09:37.160 elevated like she does not care I was
00:09:39.480 like I kind of knew that like why would
00:09:41.399 she doesn't she's not worried about me
00:09:42.839 she's fine and I couldn't have been more
00:09:45.279 wrong she literally I feel like she gave
00:09:47.200 me extra support because of my business
00:09:49.920 and when I had my first call with her
00:09:52.000 the things she was telling me she was
00:09:53.680 like don't tell anyone this but and like
00:09:56.320 I would say like Oh I thought about
00:09:57.440 doing that she's like already did that
00:09:58.760 big mistake this happened blah blah blah
00:10:01.079 blah like just laying it all out there I
00:10:03.120 was like this is the exact opposite of a
00:10:05.240 gatekeeper she was like I have never
00:10:07.600 seen someone want me to like succeed
00:10:09.839 more even though I could be taking her
00:10:11.720 real estate clients away from her that's
00:10:13.680 really cool um but on the other hand
00:10:17.200 gatekeeping gatekeeping is just
00:10:19.160 withholding information for no reason
00:10:22.160 other than to benefit yourself I think
00:10:24.640 like yeah if someone asks you how'd you
00:10:26.880 get that job how'd you get that
00:10:28.240 promotion and you have some little tips
00:10:30.240 and tricks in your head or there's
00:10:32.040 certain things that you did but you just
00:10:33.519 like don't or like tools that you use
00:10:35.720 and you don't want to tell that person
00:10:37.000 because you don't want them to have the
00:10:38.560 same success that you did I guess or
00:10:41.160 have your secret sauce or whatever it is
00:10:43.560 yeah I think that's what gatekeeping is
00:10:45.839 it feels like gatekeeping is an action
00:10:47.480 but it's also a mindset yeah it's an
00:10:49.720 action that comes from a scarcity
00:10:51.399 mindset that's true and I like that both
00:10:54.200 of those things are just so low low Vibe
00:10:57.120 yeah not cool not cool it doesn't feel
00:10:59.720 good either no it doesn't feel good and
00:11:01.680 I really it doesn't it doesn't Propel
00:11:03.480 you forward yeah to gate keep somebody
00:11:06.120 to Gat Keep information from somebody
00:11:08.320 when they're asking for your help or
00:11:10.279 they're asking for access to knowledge
00:11:12.240 yeah and like who are you to be the one
00:11:13.680 to decide whether somebody gets access
00:11:15.880 to that information or not that's just
00:11:17.800 it's interesting too this is like maybe
00:11:19.720 a really off point but like a lot of
00:11:21.920 times when you tell someone exactly how
00:11:24.360 you got from point A to point B they're
00:11:26.200 still like not going to do it 100% 100
00:11:30.160 they're not going to use the information
00:11:31.560 that you're telling them I feel like you
00:11:34.079 can tell someone exactly how you did
00:11:36.680 everything and and nobody's going to
00:11:38.399 have that same path or experience that
00:11:41.040 you had no matter what so like why not
00:11:44.160 share it you know it's not going to work
00:11:45.760 the same for everyone that is a very
00:11:47.639 very good point just because you share
00:11:49.320 somebody share with somebody an entire
00:11:51.040 Playbook of how to do something does not
00:11:53.959 mean that they're going to go replicate
00:11:55.320 that yeah they're going to have to take
00:11:56.639 their own Journey yeah and be authentic
00:11:58.639 in them M for it to be successful for
00:12:00.279 them nobody ever oh you know that came
00:12:02.839 up on uh I think I shared last week the
00:12:06.240 how I built this episode with Whitney
00:12:07.839 wolf that is actually very old but a
00:12:09.560 friend resurfaced it to me a few weeks
00:12:11.079 ago and she was one of the founding
00:12:13.440 leaders at Tinder and then was basically
00:12:17.040 shunned out of the company because she
00:12:18.320 had a relationship with one of the
00:12:19.399 founders and he didn't want her there
00:12:20.680 anymore but she the episode was about
00:12:23.279 her comeback story and how she built
00:12:24.839 Bumble and they were asking her on this
00:12:27.160 episode a ton of questions about how
00:12:29.880 it's it's such a competitive space like
00:12:31.480 why couldn't somebody just replicate
00:12:32.839 exactly what she did with bu and she
00:12:35.680 said I actually don't think anybody
00:12:38.959 could actually replicate this because
00:12:40.839 nobody has the drive the passion and the
00:12:43.000 authenticity around building this the
00:12:44.560 same way that we do yeah and even if I
00:12:47.199 gave them the entire Playbook that we
00:12:49.079 took and she said she had like people
00:12:51.040 ask her for help all the time and she
00:12:52.320 always shares how she was able to build
00:12:55.279 uh it's not a community it's a it's a
00:12:57.040 dating app but they've made it so much
00:12:58.639 more more yeah there's Bumble BFF
00:13:00.720 there's so many things um they're
00:13:02.920 disruptors they're disruptors disruptive
00:13:05.199 entrepreneurs um but it was her her
00:13:08.440 thing was like nobody's gonna copy you
00:13:10.560 if it's not authentic to them yeah and
00:13:12.160 so you shouldn't be worried about that
00:13:13.440 it's just a distraction U and then Sarah
00:13:16.360 Blakeley talks about this all the time
00:13:18.000 too there were so many small companies
00:13:20.959 that popped up trying to copy Spanx and
00:13:23.160 she chose not to litigate against any of
00:13:24.920 them because she said that's a
00:13:26.320 distraction to my business that's such a
00:13:27.920 good point why into my business why
00:13:29.600 don't I focus on just growing my
00:13:30.800 business and creating the best product
00:13:32.120 that will make my customers feel amazing

00:14:32.279 zero sum game yeah you can't serve every

00:14:36.079 the world we can't we can't have all the

00:14:40.199 have the people that resonate with our
00:14:42.440 mission and our Vibe and like the
00:14:44.720 content that we're putting out and
00:14:45.800 that's fine we don't we're not trying to
00:14:47.759 get everybody yeah we're just trying to
00:14:49.600 make an impact on those that need this
00:14:51.440 in their life yeah absolutely that's it
00:14:54.519 um what about other I'm trying to think
00:14:56.959 of other Story I mean I have so many so
00:14:59.560 there is this community there's this
00:15:01.959 community of women in leadership that is
00:15:07.600 very impressive they have tons of
00:15:09.240 high-profile very successful women in
00:15:11.279 the community and it was it's something
00:15:14.040 that I've always thought would be really
00:15:16.000 helpful to me to be part of this
00:15:17.199 community to get access to these women's
00:15:19.399 Brains network with them understand how
00:15:21.600 they achieved what they achieved and I
00:15:25.519 once I took on leadership roles which is
00:15:27.600 the criteria to be in you have to be a
00:15:30.680 VP and above I applied and I didn't hear
00:15:36.639 anything for probably six months and
00:15:39.360 then uh and really like I didn't right
00:15:42.800 or wrong I didn't expect to get in
00:15:45.079 because I felt so far apart from the
00:15:46.800 women that they were flaunting as part
00:15:48.759 of their Community I think Michelle
00:15:51.079 Obama is affiliated with this group and
00:15:54.480 some of the most powerful Executives at
00:15:57.319 successful companies m but technically I
00:16:00.120 fit the criteria yeah and so I applied
00:16:02.759 didn't hear back for a while and then I
00:16:05.480 got an email saying based on your
00:16:08.759 professional achievements we'd like to
00:16:10.560 interview you to be part of the
00:16:11.959 community I got so excited I wrote them
00:16:14.720 back and immediately like I had no chill
00:16:18.720 I was not playing at cool immediately
00:16:20.399 and I said I'm so excited how do I set
00:16:22.199 up my interview and didn't hear anything
00:16:24.120 for like a day which I thought was weird
00:16:25.839 and then another day went by which was
00:16:27.120 weird and then I got anema email that
00:16:29.759 said we are very sorry but in error
00:16:34.399 basically a bunch of people got this
00:16:35.920 email and we're not actually
00:16:39.079 interviewing you to be part of the
00:16:41.160 community and it was it was really
00:16:43.920 disheartening for me because it just
00:16:45.720 felt like another club that I couldn't
00:16:49.079 be a part of because I didn't have this
00:16:52.000 incredible success already but you did
00:16:54.319 but I but I did in a lot of ways I'm not
00:16:56.480 Michelle Obama but I've done a lot of my
00:16:58.480 career and I have a lot of information
00:17:00.600 to give and share and I also have tons
00:17:02.240 of things to learn that's why I wanted
00:17:03.839 to be part of it and so it just it it
00:17:06.599 felt like you know gatekeeping
00:17:08.039 information for me that I I wanted
00:17:11.119 access to and I was willing to pay the
00:17:12.880 membership fee and all these things yeah
00:17:15.000 and I don't know it just didn't sit
00:17:16.760 great with me and it's not even that I
00:17:19.400 hate I there's no hate or shade towards
00:17:21.520 that organization because they're
00:17:22.919 serving a specific demographic and
00:17:25.280 that's cool and I think they do great
00:17:26.839 work but it did
00:17:28.960 give me this aha moment of but where
00:17:31.559 does everybody go when they haven't yet
00:17:34.440 reached VP level yeah where does the
00:17:36.720 where do the women go when they just
00:17:38.160 want the Playbook of how to earn six
00:17:40.559 figures how to earn seven figures how to
00:17:42.600 get a promotion to a VP title how to
00:17:44.520 pick the right startup companies to work
00:17:46.679 for that are going to give you a
00:17:48.440 meaningful amount of money in equity in
00:17:50.640 your life how to find the companies that
00:17:54.559 like are going to give you change your
00:17:55.679 life type of money all of these
00:17:57.640 playbooks that are not obvious where
00:18:00.840 someone like me could go find them and
00:18:02.679 I've lived in that world for more than a
00:18:04.080 decade now and so it just sparked this
00:18:07.520 it struck a nerve in me that really made
00:18:10.360 us made me want to start this and then
00:18:12.240 when we talked about it you
00:18:14.120 totally understood and got what I was
00:18:16.159 saying because you've had similar
00:18:17.240 experiences and I don't know that's
00:18:19.720 really what we're trying to create is
00:18:20.760 like you don't have to be a VP to be
00:18:22.400 part of this community you don't you
00:18:23.840 don't have to have any specific title
00:18:25.440 you have to be somebody that wants more
00:18:27.760 wants to learn and grow wants to share
00:18:30.960 most importantly and understands the
00:18:33.799 idea and concept of collectively
00:18:35.760 supporting each other is is so much more
00:18:39.600 powerful than keeping your playbooks and
00:18:42.000 your secret sauce and your learnings to
00:18:43.559 yourself yeah and that's really
00:18:47.520 why why we're doing it yeah I think also
00:18:50.960 when you brought this idea to me I was
00:18:53.360 at a point where I work
00:18:55.919 alone and I've worked alone for like 4
00:18:59.039 years and I know that there's other
00:19:03.799 women in our community like kayia and
00:19:07.039 like Christine like people who run their
