00:03:19.959 freelancing my whole life like I always
00:03:22.000 freelanced in college and even during
00:03:24.200 corporate I always was just like working
00:03:26.560 with other businesses um while I was
00:03:28.920 like you know kind of growing my
00:03:30.400 business while I was running my
00:03:31.560 corporate lifestyle so what was life
00:03:34.080 like before you started mu mu social mu
00:03:37.720 social um and it's off for con because
00:03:39.519 I'm from South Africa so uh it means
00:03:42.280 pretty so I thought it was a good way to
00:03:44.480 just like bring my Heritage back into um
00:03:47.000 my brand and uh life was kind of crazy
00:03:50.920 before I started Moy social um as I
00:03:53.480 mentioned I was freelancing so I was
00:03:55.680 pulling like I mean I was working 60 80
00:03:58.920 hour work weeks I was in a very high
00:04:01.000 demanding corporate role I was the
00:04:02.680 influencer marketing manager for Ashley
00:04:04.760 HomeStore so um you know the last two
00:04:07.680 projects I worked on before I left
00:04:09.319 corporate was um recruiting 200
00:04:12.319 influencers from around the nation to La
00:04:16.079 for a John Legend um concert yeah that
00:04:20.560 was one of the last campaigns and then
00:04:22.639 the other one was uh Neo's studio
00:04:24.919 buildout in Atlanta so I like brought
00:04:27.680 the whole team out there to do a refresh
00:04:31.080 of his studio um for interior design and
00:04:33.560 stuff so you know really big projects
00:04:35.759 and I was the lead I was like the Run of
00:04:37.400 show So Not only was I the talent
00:04:39.080 manager uh like working with the talent
00:04:41.160 recruiting the talent working to get the
00:04:43.440 deliverables scoped out for what kind of
00:04:45.639 partnership we're running on the
00:04:46.639 influencer side but then also working
00:04:48.280 internally with different teams to
00:04:49.520 maximize that in terms of like you know
00:04:51.400 sponsorships sweep Stakes uh just
00:04:54.360 everything you know um so just like a
00:04:56.280 really high demanding job I mean we
00:04:57.680 would do build outs of like uh entire
00:05:00.000 event spaces and like like we would
00:05:01.880 literally create like a five bedroom
00:05:03.919 buildout and furnish it and build all
00:05:06.680 that furniture in one day and host a
00:05:08.360 huge influencer event and then the next
00:05:09.880 day would be like breakdown and we would
00:05:11.560 donate all that stuff so you know just
00:05:13.320 like really demanding job and then when
00:05:14.880 I would come home from that I would have
00:05:16.880 to like get back to emails with clients
00:05:18.759 I'd have to like make sure all my posts
00:05:20.199 are going out for my social media
00:05:21.840 clients I would have to you know build
00:05:23.639 the business I think a lot of people
00:05:25.479 forget to talk about that part of like
00:05:27.479 building your own business takes so much
00:05:29.240 time not just like getting work and like
00:05:32.000 doing stuff for other people but like
00:05:33.840 just building the foundation for your
00:05:35.039 own business and setting things up is
00:05:36.639 like a full-time job and so I was kind
00:05:38.600 of you know definitely cut in the
00:05:40.600 corners in some areas of building my own
00:05:42.720 business and that bit me in the butt in
00:05:44.759 when I first started my company you know
00:05:46.800 um but yeah life was really busy I was
00:05:48.639 definitely at Max like burnout when I
00:05:51.639 finally quit my job to start Mo social
00:05:53.759 so you were building Mo social for how
00:05:56.240 long while you were still in corporate
00:05:59.800 freelancing for corporate I mean I guess
00:06:01.720 you could say I was building Moy social
00:06:03.759 since I like started college in 2014
00:06:07.680 because I got my first freelance client
00:06:10.240 when I came to college um and then I
00:06:12.360 just kept on adding to that roster of
00:06:14.199 clients and now I have had clients for 5
00:06:17.080 years even though my business is only
00:06:19.199 two years old officially like when I say
00:06:21.400 we're in our second year of business or
00:06:22.960 entering into our third year of business
00:06:24.800 um we started our LLC officially two
00:06:27.840 years ago so um that's what I call my
00:06:30.880 business anniversary when I officially
00:06:32.759 like became an LLC because before that I
00:06:35.120 was just like an independent contractor
00:06:36.960 you know I wasn't like a real business
00:06:39.440 if you will but PSA you don't have to be
00:06:41.680 a real business to uh start working for
00:06:45.039 other people and it was actually like
00:06:47.520 you know a big like smack in the face
00:06:50.560 when I was like oh my gosh it's like so
00:06:52.160 much harder now that I'm an LLC and like
00:06:54.039 a real business like I should have just
00:06:55.599 been freelancing until like forever but
00:06:58.440 um it's definitely advantageous to
00:07:00.360 become an LLC but a lot more work I
00:07:02.560 would say so can you say more about how
00:07:04.639 you were working with other businesses
00:07:06.680 even when you weren't a real company
00:07:08.479 like what were you doing and how did you
00:07:09.960 start doing like how did you start
00:07:11.280 getting clients yeah I mean it was a lot
00:07:13.520 of Word of Mouth um referrals because I
00:07:16.080 was always into like social media
00:07:18.039 content creation like everybody was
00:07:20.080 always giving me the phone at their
00:07:21.360 parties and being like you take the
00:07:22.680 photos you do the content you're good at
00:07:24.680 this part like you know so I think it
00:07:26.800 was just always a natural skill for me
00:07:28.919 and some that I enjoyed doing so um come
00:07:32.120 like you know the last 10 years of
00:07:34.440 growth in social media and all of a
00:07:36.199 sudden people were like oh well I'll pay
00:07:38.400 you to do it you know because then I
00:07:39.680 started realizing my time and you know
00:07:41.720 how much it takes to create posts or
00:07:43.960 reals or Recaps or anything like that
00:07:46.120 and I was like you know I'm going to
00:07:47.759 start charging for this and so I did but
00:07:49.840 it was really just a lot of Word of
00:07:51.240 Mouth referrals from even Haley Haley
00:07:53.879 gave me my first Like official client
00:07:56.599 back in 2019 and I'm still with that
00:07:58.960 client today um full service social
00:08:01.479 media management and now I do a lot more
00:08:03.520 for them we do like email marketing for
00:08:05.280 them we do the quarterly team trainings
00:08:08.000 um content creation like all the works
00:08:10.639 um but yeah it was really just like it
00:08:13.039 kind of was a natural fit for me and
00:08:15.759 people started paying paying me to do
00:08:18.000 something that I was already enjoying
00:08:19.720 and so I think when I started making it
00:08:21.759 an official like business is when I
00:08:23.440 started doing like true proposals I was
00:08:25.720 like okay well now I have to like see
00:08:27.639 how many hours this takes me and like be
00:08:30.000 legit and be like okay let me break this
00:08:32.200 down you know and I remember like my
00:08:34.120 first social media management client I
00:08:36.559 think was like $450 a month and I was
00:08:39.839 like doing the same work that I now
00:08:42.200 charge like $2500 a month for you know
00:08:45.360 so I was doing like the most for like
00:08:47.360 the least and I just remember like
00:08:49.000 trying to convince this client of how
00:08:51.440 worthwhile her time was invested in me
00:08:54.920 and uh yeah it was just you know and now
00:08:57.399 it's like there's so many people who
00:08:59.839 realize the value of social media and
00:09:01.880 it's easy to get people on board
00:09:03.959 nowadays but you know back in the day I
00:09:06.040 just remember like trying so hard to
00:09:08.240 convince people that what I do is legit
00:09:10.640 because most people like I go home for
00:09:12.360 family holidays and people wouldn't
00:09:13.839 believe that what I did was a career
00:09:15.399 they think that it was just for fun I'm
00:09:16.880 like actually guys it's a lot you know
00:09:18.839 it's a lot of work but the dialogue
00:09:21.200 changed now I go home for holidays and
00:09:23.160 everybody's like hey my business needs
00:09:24.959 marketing can you help hey next time you
00:09:26.959 come can we do like a one-on-one and you
00:09:28.880 can talked to me about what I need for
00:09:30.240 my social media and like back in the day
00:09:32.959 five six seven years ago like what I did
00:09:35.240 was just fun you know that's really
00:09:37.040 interesting so you started in a place
00:09:38.720 where you were kind of creating demand
00:09:40.440 for social media management and now
00:09:42.519 you're absolutely servicing it because
00:09:44.320 everybody gets it like it's not optional
00:09:45.839 anymore you have to do it you have to be
00:09:47.120 good at it you have to be relevant
00:09:48.320 things change so quickly yeah it's so
00:09:50.240 much to hand it's a specialized skill it
00:09:52.519 it really is and you know I've been in
00:09:54.360 it for a decade I started at a small
00:09:57.640 marketing agency as an intern um in
00:10:00.600 college and that is what really like
00:10:03.600 gave me the background in my career I
00:10:05.480 started doing like small campaigns for
00:10:07.720 influencers I was a my role was digital
00:10:10.079 marketing generalist and so what that
00:10:12.440 means in a marketing agency is you do
00:10:17.040 everything yeah yeah I did like email
00:10:20.000 marketing I did like copyrighting for
00:10:23.240 websites I did um social media marketing
00:10:25.680 I did influencer marketing I helped with
00:10:27.320 events I like cleaned the office I like
00:10:29.519 swept the conference room floors I got
00:10:31.800 lunches for meetings like I cleaned up
00:10:34.399 the coffee station like I was a
00:10:36.519 generalist role for sure but that gave
00:10:38.600 me a good opportunity to like really see
00:10:41.240 what my passion was and what I really
00:10:42.880 enjoyed doing and really was the
00:10:44.560 backbone of like what I do today because
00:10:46.200 I still do the same things I I was doing
00:10:48.360 then and now I'm able to teach my team
00:10:50.040 these different roles as well because
00:10:51.639 you know that generalist role is what
00:10:53.839 every like business needs like you know
00:10:55.760 for your business for my business like I
00:10:57.639 need email marketing I need my website
00:10:59.320 updated like I need to do social media

00:11:14.680 and like you know that was the reality
00:11:16.920 back then I think my I have my tax
00:11:18.760 return from that year and it was like
00:11:21.360 $166,000 for what I was doing you know
00:11:23.920 and I was like paying for all my tuition
00:11:25.399 and everything but I knew back then I
00:11:26.839 was like I am doing the work now so that
00:11:30.880 later on it's going to pay off you know
00:11:33.519 and now I feel like you know people come
00:11:35.839 in their first role and like graduate
00:11:38.360 college and go into their first role and
00:11:39.720 they're just like I'm ready you know put
00:11:41.800 me in coach and I'm like it's going to
00:11:43.519 take some groundw work you know it's
00:11:44.720 going to take some building it's going
00:11:45.839 to take some years so I think like you
00:11:47.720 know I can't encourage people enough to
00:11:49.560 get that internship while they're in
00:11:51.399 college because I got my first full-time
00:11:53.519 job before I even graduated college at
00:11:55.920 Home Shopping Network and they didn't
00:11:57.680 even know that I was still in school
00:11:59.000 they like hired me gave me a full-time
00:12:00.320 role I just started doing online classes
00:12:02.000 going to school at 6 p.m. they didn't
00:12:03.720 know I was still in college and I was
00:12:05.079 like yeah know I'm like graduating soon
00:12:07.000 and they're like what and I was like
00:12:08.519 yeah I worked there for like over a year
00:12:11.200 and I was still in college got a
00:12:12.560 full-time job and like a big like
00:12:14.440 corporate career how did you do both a
00:12:17.720 full-time job in graduating college you
00:12:20.360 must have had a lot of you must be a
00:12:21.880 very organized person I am definitely a
00:12:23.959 type a girly I cannot deny that um and
00:12:27.760 I'm also probably the one person who
00:12:29.320 will tell you I'm like an organized mess
00:12:31.000 like I'm a hot mess for sure like
00:12:32.519 everything is very much um the way that
00:12:34.959 I need it to be but to some people or
00:12:37.399 like to my team I'm always apologizing
00:12:38.959 I'm like sorry guys like it's all in my
00:12:40.720 head you know and that's been like the
00:12:42.160 hardest part but I think I was able to
00:12:44.240 do both because I wanted to you know
00:12:46.399 nobody was forcing me to do that I just
00:12:48.480 had the willpower to do it and I think
00:12:51.079 it always goes back to like I really
00:12:53.040 enjoy what I do like I have such a
00:12:54.800 passion for it I have a passion for
00:12:56.360 seeing businesses succeed from using us
00:12:58.440 for their maret marketing Services I
00:13:00.079 have a passion for creating I have a
00:13:01.760 passion for doing stuff for my own
00:13:03.519 company you know it's been like just a
00:13:05.480 desire of mine to be able to do what I'm

00:13:11.800 driving force all along is like because

00:13:17.399 definitely have hard days you know but I
00:13:19.399 always tell my husband who's also an
00:13:20.800 entrepreneur I'm like we're doing it to
00:13:22.639 ourselves we can stop anytime and go get
00:13:25.399 a corporate job and you know what that's
00:13:27.440 never an option for us we're just like
00:13:29.320 absolutely not we wouldn't trade what we
00:13:30.880 do for the world um but it's something
00:13:32.920 that I think I've always had the stamina
00:13:35.199 to work extra hours and after hours and
00:13:38.800 before hours because I wanted to I mean
00:13:42.000 that makes a lot of sense like we've
00:13:43.920 gotten the question before why what
00:13:46.199 motivates you to hustle like why are you
00:13:48.199 both have full-time things that you're
00:13:50.000 thriving in why start something new why
00:13:52.360 have a podcast why start gatess and it's
00:13:54.399 like it actually doesn't feel like
00:13:55.880 hustling yes you are putting in a lot of
00:13:57.920 hours and and yes you're sacrificing
00:14:00.320 you're not doing you're saying no to so
00:14:02.320 that you can do double time in the work
00:14:04.600 but if you want to be doing it and you
00:14:06.399 feel like you're actually helping people
00:14:09.320 like that's the fuel that's sometimes
00:14:11.000 all the fuel that you need yeah you're
00:14:12.519 making an impact yeah and I also think
00:14:14.600 that like my personality type is um very
00:14:18.480 generous in loaning me the energy I need
00:14:21.160 in order to like Powerhouse it out
00:14:24.279 because I did this personal I've done so
00:14:26.399 many personality tests like in my
00:14:28.320 lifetime
00:14:29.480 um but there was one particular one that
00:14:31.480 I did in college and it uh it measured
00:14:34.680 your like output rate and mine was like
00:14:37.320 the highest in all my class it was at
00:14:39.680 like
00:14:40.680 85% um where everybody else's was like
00:14:43.360 there was one other guys and his was at
00:14:45.079 like 70% but then besides that everybody
00:14:47.040 else was like under 40% and so I think I
00:14:50.560 have a lot more to like give in terms of
00:14:53.560 just like stamina and like wanting to
00:14:56.040 you know continue working instead of
00:14:58.120 being like actually I'm just going to
00:14:59.639 close the computer and like watch TV you
00:15:02.720 know so I think that's something to keep
00:15:04.600 in mind too like not everybody's
00:15:05.920 personality is this way and if that's
00:15:09.399 not your personality then like you'll
00:15:11.240 make up for it in other ways you know
00:15:13.320 yeah absolutely that makes a lot of
00:15:14.839 sense so did you always know you wanted
00:15:16.480 to work for yourself I did yeah I always
00:15:19.040 had an entrepreneurial Spirit um when I
00:15:21.360 was a little girl my mom would go
00:15:22.880 grocery shopping with me and I would
00:15:25.480 come home with groceries and create a
00:15:28.079 new store
00:15:29.199 in my bedroom and she would have to like
00:15:30.839 repurchase her groceries and like I
00:15:32.639 would bring like the family in I'd be
00:15:34.519 like everybody come to the candy aisle
00:15:36.199 here's the fruit section and like my mom
00:15:38.120 would literally have to like repurchase
00:15:39.560 her groceries in my store in the bedroom
00:15:41.480 after like just going to get her
00:15:42.639 groceries at the grocery store so I
00:15:45.240 think I've just always had that desire
00:15:47.040 like for more for myself um and to be
00:15:49.759 able to have that control over my life
00:15:51.880 you know I I'm a big believer as much as
00:15:54.319 I am like a Powerhouse always wanting to
00:15:56.240 work um I am a big believer in balance
00:15:58.959 and that work life balance and you know
00:16:01.199 having had like many years in corporate
00:16:03.720 where I had very little balance in my
00:16:06.000 life I always had the end goal in mind
00:16:07.800 of like you know I'm building it right
00:16:10.079 now so that later on I can rest and like
00:16:12.839 I don't have a family yet you know I
00:16:14.120 just have my husband and myself but um
00:16:16.120 you know I do want to be there for my
00:16:17.480 kids and I don't want to work when I
00:16:19.040 have kids I want to give them like a
00:16:20.519 full three years of like hey this is Mom
00:16:23.360 and I want to be here with you and I'm
00:16:25.000 not promising that I'm not going to work
00:16:26.399 in those three years but I want to be
00:16:27.600 able to step away and take like the
00:16:29.600 maternity leave that I want to take
00:16:31.240 which is way longer than the maternity
00:16:32.680 leave that any corporate job is going to
00:16:34.160 give me um but that's something that's
00:16:35.800 really important to me because my mom
00:16:37.199 was a workaholic and still lives to this
00:16:38.880 day like seven days a week she's like
00:16:40.600 working on something you know and so I
00:16:42.800 grew up not really having a mom who was
00:16:45.120 present for my life like she was never
00:16:46.839 really like there for the sports games
00:16:49.240 and I was an athlete in high school and
00:16:50.759 middle school I was always doing sports
00:16:52.279 but my dad was showing up for those
00:16:53.839 things you know my mom was always
00:16:55.040 working and um I was kind of like longed
00:16:57.480 to have my mom bring the the snacks for
00:16:59.000 soccer game but like all the other kids
00:17:01.519 moms brought the S snacks for a soccer
00:17:03.560 game but um you know it also taught me
00:17:06.760 hard work you know and I like saw that
00:17:08.720 in my mom and um you know since therapy
00:17:11.240 I Now understand that it's called
00:17:12.400 modeled
00:17:13.919 behavior and my therapist was like yeah
00:17:16.839 you like exhibit a lot of modeled
00:17:18.640 behavior from growing up you know but
00:17:20.839 that was something that like I was
00:17:22.000 missing in my childhood is my mom was
00:17:23.760 always working and so I determined to
00:17:26.119 create a lifestyle for myself that would
00:17:28.480 allow me to be there for my kids you
00:17:30.280 know one day when that time comes do you
00:17:32.520 okay so I'm I'm curious to hear more
00:17:34.160 about this I think it's something I mean
00:17:36.440 I think about it and I think a lot of
00:17:37.760 people especially listeners of the show
00:17:39.919 think about like yes building something
00:17:42.520 that you're really proud of and that
00:17:43.799 takes a lot of time and effort that you
00:17:45.440 have to put in the work to get it to a
00:17:47.640 place where you can step away but also
00:17:50.480 of the with the motivation that like you
00:17:53.280 want a family one day and you want to be
00:17:55.159 able to model the behavior to your
00:17:57.240 children like you can build what you
00:17:58.880 want and you can have the life that you
00:18:00.159 want but also be present and be balanced
00:18:03.080 and it sounds like the through line for
00:18:04.559 you is like ultimately you're chasing
00:18:06.039 balance for one day in your life for now
00:18:08.000 but also like when you have a family I
00:18:10.000 think it's a it's an interesting thing
00:18:12.480 to think about because it's like on one
00:18:13.799 hand you want to show them you can do
00:18:16.159 anything you want to do you can create
00:18:17.440 it from nothing and it sounds like maybe

00:18:58.480 years ago they recruited her to come
00:19:01.559 here and work and my dad was actually
00:19:03.840 not allowed to work so he was like Mr
00:19:05.559 Mom you know with work visas and stuff
00:19:07.880 um so he was taking care of me and my
00:19:09.600 two sisters while my mom worked every
00:19:11.720 day and she had to support a family of
00:19:14.159 five in a new country and we started
00:19:16.600 from scratch you know we came to the US
00:19:18.600 with $500 and 10 suitcases and each
00:19:22.440 other and that was it and so now like 20
00:19:25.159 years later it's so cool to see like how
00:19:28.480 that really propelled us into what we're

00:19:33.440 sisters and now we're all like with our
00:19:35.640 significant others and my older sister

00:21:08.760 curiosity but when I actually moved here

00:51:07.240 and talking to people and uh then I went
00:51:10.119 to like the lowest point of my life all
00:51:13.680 of a sudden where I had like no
00:51:16.440 co-workers right no team and I love to
00:51:19.000 like dress up so like even just like
00:51:20.559 getting dressed for work every day was
00:51:21.960 like a highlight of my life and I was in
00:51:24.920 a two top for like 3 months because I
00:51:27.599 couldn't put like sleeves on or anything
00:51:29.520 or my arm and so I couldn't like I just
00:51:32.240 didn't feel like myself and I was in
00:51:34.400 this place of being so alone and like I
00:51:37.000 don't think any of my friends had gone
00:51:39.000 through any like traumatic like car
00:51:41.200 accident like bone breaking like
00:51:43.480 experience like that so none nobody like
00:51:45.200 really knew how to show up for me as a
00:51:46.640 friend either um and I think that was
00:51:49.400 hard for me too you know I like had my
00:51:51.359 husband and like me and he was my fiance
00:51:53.160 then we were getting married that year
00:51:54.440 so I think like mentally I just was at
00:51:56.480 like the peak of like happiness and even
00:51:59.760 though I was burnt out I was just like
00:52:01.359 still like living this like dream life
00:52:03.559 and then I just went to like the lowest
00:52:05.480 low you know and I was so so alone and
00:52:08.400 so mentally and physically just like in
00:52:11.599 so much trauma and I think that ended up
00:52:15.440 throughout the year like resurfacing
00:52:18.160 things that maybe had always been there
00:52:20.599 you know like insecurities about myself
