Welcome to Cultivate with Chelsea, the podcast that supports perinatal women and navigating life postpartum. I'm your host and new mama friend, Chelsea Barveen, here to talk about all the things they don't tell you to expect after you're expecting. All right, mama, your time is more valuable than ever now, so let's dive in. It's time to cultivate.

Great, it is.
It's feeling real. Like, welcome. Welcome to the party, Chels, truthfully. Wow, what a full week we had.
What a full week, you guys. I feel like I'm gonna become extremely redundant in saying this now, like from here on out, but I cannot believe tomorrow is the start of week 17. Like...
chelsea barbine (01:11.958)
my gosh. Holy moly, so much to dive into in this week's recap. Going to be focusing on week 16 of pregnancy with baby number two. Wow, I think when I last sat down to record, I was just sharing that I had picked my mama from the airport and we were preparing to celebrate.
our Frankie girl turning two. And let me tell you, you guys, I feel a little guilty, like a little selfish that we planned the quote unquote big party to celebrate year one, given the fact she had, I mean, she knew, but like guys, she had no idea what was going on for her first birthday. And honestly, at that age, it was probably a lot. But like this year,
She was so into it. Like woke up, I mean, we did the same tradition as we did last year and I'm hoping to really continue it. But I got like a number two balloon and we tied it to her crib. So when she woke up, you know, we heard her and all the things like we came in and Colin like threw balloons up like out of like a trash bag, like into the air. They were yellow, of course, our favorite color. And we were like, happy birthday.
You know, they like all fell into her crib and she was jumping and hitting the balloons and like, my God, my heart like, mm, mm mm. She was so into it. Like all day was saying, happy birthday, happy, happy, happy. Like, it was adorable, my God. And with that celebration,
and having family in town, my goodness, did, I'm sure that it was just the amount of food and like a little bit of the kinds of food I was eating, but I started to notice some indigestion and like confession, I am not a slow eater. Like it is, it really is an area of opportunity for me to grow in. It's gotta be.
chelsea barbine (03:33.294)
At first I kind of thought it was childhood related, but I can't help but think that becoming a mom hasn't helped by any means. You get it. If you're in this season, we're just constantly on the go. And in thinking about it even more, I really don't think, and this is gonna sound so ass backwards, but being in the wellness space, specifically training, supported this.
poor habit as well. Like from when I started teaching, I would teach at this like little gym down the hill from the corporate office I was at. And I would no joke be like getting ready there after teaching, you know, the seven o 'clock class and rushing to like warm up food and like eat it before like meetings and things like that, like literally at my desk. And then when I grew into a little bit larger of a club space,
would then be like racing from the office to teach like an evening class, because that's what I had availability for at the time. And I would literally be like eating in the car like as I was going. And it just then grew into like eating between clients, like in between like one -on -one sessions or in between like group classes. And it was just, my goodness, no wonder. No wonder I, habits are so hard to break. my gosh. Anyways, I like to think that I,
I'm a mindful eater and like that I'm conscious of what I'm putting into my body. Again, not so much the speed, but it was mind blowing to me that we went to this really nice dinner. This restaurant just opened up around the corner from us to celebrate Frankie's birthday with like just my parents. And my mom and I like, ended up kind of like making our own like entrees, so to speak. Like we got.
The scallops which is like technically an appetite appetizer and then like Brussels sprouts which is like an additional side and I know Brussels sprouts can kind of be funky with digestion, but again like you would think Easy, I don't want to say like easy food, but like lighter foods and I'm sure the appetizer did not help. my god, you guys it was like this delicious like Crab artichoke type dip. I feel like whenever I am
chelsea barbine (05:57.034)
In summer mode, I just gravitate more towards the seafood. mean, really, my God, seafood or like sushi, excuse me, is where I, where my heart really lies in the summer with like a nice glass of like Sauvignon Blanc, like chef's kiss. You gotta get it from New Zealand though, sorry. This is like not helping those who are pregnant right now, especially if you like miss drinking. I don't. But there is something about sometimes just going out to dinner and like having a nice glass of wine or like, again, I don't know.
Anyways, highly recommend for that, those postpartum meals when you feel ready. But where was I going with this? yeah, like the foods were like lighter and I still felt, woo, like I was rocking the food baby on top of the baby baby and I'm still early, you know, again, like 17 weeks tomorrow, but like, things are just shifting up. I mean, I did.
Where was it? It was probably the baby app. I think I told her myself on like a previous week update, but like I can't help it. Every now and then I'll just like scan it out a couple of weeks and just like see what's coming, remind myself like what's down the pipeline. But they say that around like 20 -ish weeks is when your uterus is about like belly button height. So like there's still room to go, you know, like it like continues to move like past your belly button. So like there's still plenty of room to go.
but I can feel everything continuing to like shift up and I really need to be, know it to self, be more mindful when I'm eating. Anyways, definitely felt that as like a physical effect. I wanna dive into my pelvic floor appointment with Dr. Sarah, but I'm gonna save that because there's a couple of other things I wanna touch on. This is definitely more of like a physical update, but like not in your traditional.
like baby apps per se, I mean, I guess the indigestion was, but one thing I did over this past week, and I really wanna bring this up because I talk about it in phase two of the Core Care Cultivate Methodology, it's actually part of bonus content for Cultivate Crew mamas, is remembering that like our physical health is not always about.
chelsea barbine (08:17.826)
you know, the movement itself. Like there are so many different pieces. It's beyond the nutrition, it's beyond the hydration. Like there's so many other things that come up. And I was reminded of this section in phase two, when I'm walking through, you know, each of the pillars, you know, like the first week we focus on your mental health, the second week is your emotional health, the third week is your spiritual health, and then the fourth week, which technically would be like week eight postpartum, in that preparation.
is your physical health. And I really wanna like hone in again that yes, I do cover, you know, practices that do support your physical health from like a nutrition and a movement perspective. And it really, it's all, we're multi -dimensional beings, you guys, like it's all interconnected. But I cover something that I don't think many of us think about. And that is staying up to date with our like our general health appointments. And I was reminded of this this week because I had a dental appointment.
And just like a regular, you know, six month checkup. My mom was in town, so I actually asked her if she would come with and like bring Frankie, like let Frankie sit in her, like in her lap, like so Frankie could watch. Per the dentist, like no need to really bring her until she's probably closer to three. So, I mean, fine by me, because full transparency, we did not think that she needed to be on dental. But we...
My mom was there with her and I don't know, I thought it was kind of cute. My mom used to work in a dental office and I don't know if she really thought too much about it, but I was like, my God, how cute. My mom will be there. Not that it was Frankie's first appointment. The hygienist did end up brushing her teeth, fake brushing, trying to count, but Frankie was like, no ma 'am, not having it. I just thought it was kind of cool that my mom was there the first time that Frankie was at.
I mean, besides visiting her in Michigan. But when I was wrapping up my appointment, they always want to book out your next one and any other things that need to be followed up on. And she was like, okay, so in six months, I had shared with them at the start of my appointment, like, just so you guys know, I am expecting. And they're like, good grats, what do you do? Blah, blah, blah. So we revisited it at the end. And given...
chelsea barbine (10:41.954)
this like the six month mark, it would have put me like maybe a few to four weeks like after delivery of going in for my next cleaning. And she's like, I want to guess that like you're probably not going to be inclined to like come and see us. And I was like, yeah, no, I probably won't, you know. And so she's like, all right, well, do you want to plan for like later in February or maybe even like in March? And at first I was like,
goody two shoes, like no, no, no, like don't forget, like, cause this used to be something that was really bad about you guys. And I say used to me as I'm like thinking, shit, I really need to go for an eye exam. And this is like probably not the time to do it, being pregnant. I don't know for you, but like, my eyes weren't great before I had Frankie and like they got worse after having her. And now this pregnancy, I'm like, dear God, like I really cannot see.
But I know again, it's just like something that changes they say like your foot can change sizes, too It's guys that did not happen to me the first time but I know it did happen to my sister The our bodies are so amazing. So amazing. my god. But anyways going back to the appointment I was like Inclined to I first told her like no no, like let's go for like, you know February that's fine. I'll be okay Again, because like I didn't want to fall behind I do take
good care of my teeth. I'm not a flosser every single day and thank God she did not lecture me this time about that. I feel like the first few times after having Frankie, she cut me some slack. Frankie was, like they always say, or at least my hygienist is like, yeah, the first year, I try not to give parents too hard of a time. You're just trying to take care of them and keep yourself going. Godspeed. But she did remind me this most recent visit.
when would that have been? I guess right around the holidays. Like, okay, so I can tell, you know, we're like kind of falling out of habit here. Like, don't forget to floss, you know, and I'm like, I know, I know. Collin is so good and it makes me, like, it's not like I don't have the reminder, you guys. I just, sometimes I'm just like, I'll do this tomorrow. you know, but that all being said, like I try to be even more up to date on my teeth cleanings.
chelsea barbine (13:09.418)
are like big for me, which is funny that I don't floss. But again, daily, I do floss you guys. Okay, moving on from the flossing. I first told her February and she was like, okay. And then I sat there for second and I was like, no, who am I kidding? Like, I'm not gonna want to come here in February. I was like, all right, let's plan for March. And I'm like, mom, is Florida again this year? Like, can I schedule early March, please? Like also then trying to like compromise on like how late I was pushing this back.
But I share all of this because one, I'm really proud for myself that I did put it on the calendar because if it's on the calendar for me, like I will do it. It's very unlikely that I will push it back and reschedule. like kudos to like my dermatologists. Like they literally make you schedule your appointment before you leave. And that's why I end up going to see the dermatologist every year because I wouldn't outside of that, like I wouldn't think like, I need to go see the dermatologist. And truth be told, since becoming a mom,
It has gotten even more challenging because, especially when your children are in that first year, you're at a doctor's office so frequently. Again, that's even with just your quote unquote normal well visits that you feel like you're going. You feel like you're always at the doctor's. And I think when it comes to caring for ourselves, clearly I'm a whole year, maybe two, late on another eye exam. It's so easy to forget about ourselves. And so I share that.
Right now, and this recap has a reminder, it's so top of mind for me. But truthfully, as best as you can, as I explained in phase two, get all of your general health appointments on the books before baby comes. Do yourself a favor. And you can even lean into that and get a few extra self -care appointments. Schedule out the childcare. Put it on the calendar now. Make it happen. Okay.
wanted to cover that and then also I for the first time of this pregnancy had the pleasure of taking a prenatal yoga class and I share that because you know I've been so faithful to my local studio I don't think I'll leave like anytime soon I mean maybe towards the end I'll shift I don't know but I do know that like as I continue to progress along in this pregnancy I'm gonna have to be a little bit more mindful and truth be told
chelsea barbine (15:36.878)
as a mom and like as a prior instructor, it is so nice for someone to tell me what to do, like not to craft my own workouts and like just to turn off my brain -ish for like 60 minutes. And unfortunately, you know, now being pregnant and taking, I shouldn't say unfortunately, as like being pregnant is bad, I should like, but like unfortunately attending a non -prenatal, postnatal approved studio.
adds on that layer of responsibility now for me, attending as I am expecting. And I say all of that because, gosh, it felt so good to take a class and not have to worry about what the instructor was telling me to do. Not worry, not as in, again, I don't have faith or trust in the instructors at my local studio. I most certainly do. It's just that I have to remind myself that they're teaching the more general population, not.
a pregnancy class. And it was just, Janelle, thank you. It was so good. It ended up being a bonus workshop for this cohort of the Cultivate crew. I just, what a way to end the night. really should start including that, like at least once a week, like an evening practice for myself. I think maybe that will help me just kind of like tune in more. I was really, really, really good about carving out.
by myself and like time to connect with Frankie while I was pregnant with her and like full transparency guys it's been a little bit more challenging this time and I think maybe again like our lives are so different right now not even from like a toddler perspective but like truthfully like running my own business you know it's it's very it's very easy to
find myself challenged by like prioritizing, you know, my relationship after bedtime and then business and then rest and my time for myself. Like it's a lot, but I think maybe again, kind of two birds, one stone moving my body and then also connecting with baby with like a prenatal yoga flow would be so beautiful. Really like on the physical health side of things today, gosh, with like the being mindful with like digesting, digesting.
chelsea barbine (17:58.348)
with my digestion and thinking about the dentist appointments and then the yoga. I also had a chirocession yesterday. It my first one using the pillow. I actually asked for it. I was like, hey, I think we're here. Every time I go, like, she's gonna just giggle because I need it so bad. So, so, so bad. I'm really trying to stretch them out.
just with all the PT happening too.
OB appointments and it gets to be a lot you guys, all the appointments, all of them. So I'm really trying to keep the Cairo appointments as stretched out as I can. I've been going every like six weeks. Both me and Frankie go, it's great that she comes with me because one, I swear that it has helped her in so many different ways. But I also love it too, because it's something that I'm doing with her, so I don't know.
OB appointment I like go to myself I mean Colin comes with me but and then obviously the PT appointment it's just it's just me so it it's been nice to have the space for Frankie to come with me and like she gets a little love too.
But yeah, I'm thinking about it. like, know the OB appointments are gonna be picking up. I got a little bit of time for that. I think that's not until like 28 weeks. So we got plenty of time there. I mean, the Cairo eventually, I know that that's gonna be picking up. I'm gonna need it. And then PT for like birth prep, I'm sure. Like I know that it's not like a one and done. I actually scheduled my next appointment with Sarah for the end of August.
chelsea barbine (19:47.53)
I'm forgetting what date it is. I'm trying to think how many weeks apart it, I guess about four weeks, like every four weeks with Sarah. But so eye -opening. Can I tell you, like first of all, yes, it's a lot to like juggle it all with the blood work and the scans and all the things, but I really do believe that these are the things that are the pivotal, like,
These are the game changers when it comes to like the big day. I'm saying the big day isn't like the birth, like prepping yourself. But honest, just like in general, like for an enjoyable pregnancy for me, a smoother transition postpartum, it's like, it takes the extra time, yes, but like that's the hard that I would, I would rather right now of like the time commitment, the financial commitment, the coordinating of things. Like that is, that's the hard that I would rather.
versus feeling uncomfortable, feeling unsupported, not able, quite honestly not able to keep up, and then having a longer recovery on the back end. I don't know, it just feels so good to be mothered. As you are becoming a mom, when you are a mom, as I talked about with yoga, how great it felt to not have to think about what I was supposed to be doing. Anyways, I'm kinda going down a whole nother rabbit hole.
My PT appointment, as I shared, I posted to my story today that I had the session and a really good question came through and I'll use this opportunity to share why I've kind of talked about it on a few different places, probably during my episode with Dr. Sarah, it's PSA, Kegels aren't always the answer to pelvic floor health. Highly recommend you go listen to that. We also did a workshop together.
with this cohort that too you can purchase separately. Forgetting how much that is. I'll link that in the show notes. I'll link both Janelle's workshop and Dr. Sarah's workshop in the show notes for today's episode. I've also been very transparent in just sharing like throughout this series that I have experienced pelvic floor heaviness this time around. And that's not something that I experienced with Frankie. And quite frankly, it feels like
chelsea barbine (22:07.828)
It started earlier than it quote unquote should have. I want to say I noticed it around like week eight or nine. It was at the end of the day and I was just posted up and like on the couch I felt like I needed to be horizontal and not because I had a vomit. Like I'm pretty sure I probably felt like I needed a vomit too but I felt just this,
uncontrollable, like heaviness weighted sensation in my vagina. And the best way that I can describe it for someone who's like, what are you talking about? Is it just felt like there was a tamp on there and there wasn't. Yeah, it's not comfortable. And again, given how early it...
is, it still is, but really how early it started in this pregnancy, it was like really concerning for me for a multitude of reasons. One, it's just the discomfort. Like I don't want to deal with that. I mean, at the time it was like for the next 30 weeks. I don't even want to have to deal with that for the next like 25 weeks at this point. Like just it doesn't know. I just don't want that. Wow. Twenty five weeks to put me at like almost 42 weeks pregnant. I dear Lord, I pray not.
healthy baby, healthy baby, healthy mama, okay. But just please not 42 weeks pregnant. My goodness. I also too was worried about just pelvic floor damage and my overall health. The piece of labor about like just being put on bed rest. I know, I just, I know that's...
it happens, like that's not, I would rather try to be proactive than experience that. So at least if it does happen, I can say to myself, I did everything that I possibly could to avoid that outcome. That all being said, I reached out to Dr. Sarah and she had shared with me that she recommends waiting until the second trimester. So to be extra safe, I waited a little bit past the start of that. We scheduled the appointment and she was,
chelsea barbine (24:30.558)
so amazing. She offers in -home visits, she does in -office. I had her come to the house just given the availability that she had for this first appointment, but I am going to her office space next time. Mack was here, she did great with him. I didn't have Frankie at home. It was today, so she's with my mother -in -law. I didn't have Frankie at home. So that was, I mean, it's not to say that
kids can't be there. She had said that she has little ones in the office, she has them at home. She has two boys herself. She's very much like, we make it work for you. Which I really do love that. We were even going over that when she was sharing with me my assigned exercise, my program to do, my homework in between sessions. Which is another thing I love that she does that. It helps to expedite the process.
It moves things along. It also makes you feel like you're doing something and that you have control over this too, which I just think from a provider perspective is just so important to empower clients and patients with. Anyway, she brought a little table and sheets and stuff like that. She started off by just going over my intake form with me. So there was a whole form that I filled out just kind of explaining why was I seeking public floor therapy, a little bit of
like general health questions, stuff about, you know, previous pregnancies, age, any other health conditions, all the things, and then like what my goals were. And we went over that like very thoroughly. We talked about my birth experience with Frankie, any complications that I had had, and then following that, we did a general movement assessment. So this is what I find to be just...
so cool about her work and we kind of talked about it in her episode and this also beautifully aligns with the other one that I did with Joni Johnson, the founder of Transformation Nation and just how much like corrective exercise specialists, how much they do blend and they compliment so beautifully with pelvic floor therapist is although Dr. Sarah was looking specifically at my pelvic health, she
chelsea barbine (26:49.484)
looks at the body as like a whole unit. Like it's not just she treats the pelvic floor like individually. Like she looks at your whole body and the way that it operates. And based upon my assessment, she actually believes that a lot of my challenges come from a thoracic, a tight thoracic spine. And the area that I'm talking about, if you're not familiar with like these, the slingo.
your thoracic spine is essentially like the backside of your upper back. It's between your shoulder blades, your scapula heads, excuse me, right up along the ribs. And typically when you're not getting, in my case, I'm not getting the greatest expansion when it comes to my breathing. And as a result, because I'm not
practicing 360 breathing more often than not. I am putting more pressure in my abdominal section region and then therefore into the pelvic floor. You guys, from the moment she told me she thinks that this is due to tight thoracic mobility or restricted thoracic mobility, I was like, get the F out of here. This makes such sense. my gosh, I've only become even more
restricted since having Frankie with, you know, nursing with almost a whole year of pumping. Just in general, like I holding her, you know, the bending down, the it's just the way our body.
In a sense, our body will rarely tell us no. It will always find a way to just make whatever we ask for it to happen, happen. That doesn't mean that it's gonna do it in the most efficient way. It will just do it in the way that it is easiest for it to do it, or the most optimal way, excuse me. So it will, in a sense, compensate for deficits and things of that nature. And let me tell you, this is...
chelsea barbine (29:01.646)
It's not even like me noticing it. Like this has been something I've been told like since I was training. So, my God, probably like it was before 2020. I've known that this has been a thing. This probably came up during Pilates, like all of my certifications. It's even something that comes up in my chiropractic sessions, which is funny because I literally just had that appointment yesterday. Anyways, point being is I took that as a huge like, my God, yes, this makes sense.
duh, it's all connected, of course that would be the case. So that's where a lot of the mobility practices came from that we kind of went through. She started off looking at the rib mobility, then we looked at the spine, and then we moved to the hips. And she gave me different exercises to do as we were kind of going through different things. So really me, I'm even doing a little bit of like,
myofascial release with some skin rolling and stuff. And then we have some upper body twist, avoiding the lower abdomen involvement. And then a lot of focused on intentional breathing. And she gave me a couple tips and tricks to do with that, but ultimately really focusing on breathing open the backside of my body.
So like really opening up as I'm breathing, like inhaling and expanding through my bra strap, like where the hooks would be. After we went through all of that, we did ultimately do an external pelvic assessment. So for that I did remove, you know, shorts, underwear. She, again, it was not internal, but she did feel around externally the pelvic floor muscles, which this is something where
I feel like this just goes across the board with any provider, with any practitioner, but like truly like.
chelsea barbine (31:06.178)
The importance of feeling safe and respected and well cared for cannot be emphasized enough. I was very blessed to have connected with Dr. Sarah like almost a year ago now and have already been in contact with her back and forth virtually. We've collaborated on things together. As I said, we've done a podcast episode, we've done a workshop. Like I, although I haven't spent...
too much time with her face to face like in person, aside from our initial meeting, I felt like I have developed a very comfortable rapport with her and I feel that that is something that's really important when it comes to working with someone like a pelvic floor therapist, like an OBGYN. And honestly, trust your gut at the end of the day. Look out for referrals, ask loved ones, ask other practitioners that you trust for recommendations.
This is like a really, it's a sensitive area. It's a very private area, although it doesn't feel like it when you're pregnant or you're delivering or you're postpartum because everything is just out in the open all the time, even your boobs. But truly like just...
chelsea barbine (32:24.322)
All I gotta say is just, it's important to feel so comfortable and I'm so appreciative that I felt that comfort with Dr. Sarah. I have shared this, I shared this on my story, I shared this in other conversations. Even though I knew, you know what I mean, and I had a girlfriend who, actually one of my girlfriends and then a client of mine, they have went through pelvic floor therapy. I kinda had an idea of what to expect and I knew, you know, like.
the one had shared, actually I think they both have shared with me that they experienced the internal exam and exercises, know, like facilitated by their PT. I still was nervous, you know, like you don't, it's just when you don't, when you've never been through something before, you don't really know what to anticipate and it can feel uncomfortable, especially when you're pregnant. I don't know, there's just this thing of like this motherly instinct, this protective, like, I don't know, anyways.
I was so appreciative that I felt as comfortable as I did because I will say it's also not that comfortable. Like it didn't hurt by any means, but it like didn't like feel good. You know, like it's, I probably like many other women who feel pelvic floor heaviness have tightness, like tension in the pelvic floor region. And obviously, as I mentioned in other areas of my body and that's what
causes the heaviness. It's not actually weakness, it's actually tightness. And it's like when you are going through these exercises and like assessments, I will say, there's like tender spots. It's like, I don't know, I just, and I feel comfortable to like advocate for myself when something felt too intense or when something like felt okay. Like it just, I don't know, I think that was really helpful.
You can hear a little bit more about like the pelvic floor muscle group and stuff like that in both the podcast episode that I recorded with Dr. Sarah and the workshop itself, but I can share she did actually make her way all the way through the entire set of the muscle group. She did confirm for me that yes, there is also like regional tightness in addition to like the thoracic spine like.
chelsea barbine (34:50.912)
lack of mobility. So also glad that I didn't feel like too crazy like all this was just because I was tight in my upper back. But she did share with me, we will do more like hyper like, what was it like release exercises to that region because that's something that like I can't really do on my own, at least not right now, not that I know of.
We didn't really go over any of that stuff, but all in all, was a really thorough appointment. It was an hour and a half, I wanna say. We may have gone a tad bit over, because we were just chit chatting in the beginning, just to feel validated that what I'm feeling is actually, that's what I'm feeling. But then also to feel like I have the support to implement exercises, both guided and also
like on my own in between sessions to...
I relief. I'm just so appreciative. It was worth every freaking penny. I will say from an insurance standpoint, every state is different if you're curious about seeking this. I did not know this, but per the state of Pennsylvania, you do need a referral within 30 days of receiving service. So technically, there's some sort of credential. I'm pretty sure she definitely talks about this in the workshop. I'm sure you could even reach out to her.
chelsea barbine (36:25.902)
include her contact information in this episode as well. there are certain practitioners that can provide care before receiving the referral up to like 30 days out. Apparently it is super easy to get the referral. You can send it through the portal she has shared with me, or you can just kind of bring it up in your next OB appointment and basically share like, like I will like, hey, I'm experiencing pelvic floor heaviness.
Can I please have a referral for a PT so I can just be proactive? Apparently it's not a problem. So stay tuned for that one, just given my experiences with the OB office. But truly, Dr. Sarah, thank you so much. I know it's going to be, I don't wanna say a long road. She reassured me, it wasn't as bad as I probably thought that it was. But I know that it's gonna take time and.
