SPEAKER_02Greetings, students. It is I, Captain Carl, and I will start by telling you the single most important thing to know about being a superhero. The most important thing to know about being a superhero, the single thing you must know before you dare try to be a superhero, is. Sorry, my phone is ringing. Hello? Really? Really? Really? Okay, I'll be right there. What is it, Captain Carl? My favorite show, the Stinky Shoes show, is on TV right now. I have to go watch it. Sorry I can't stay and help you with your superhero training. Good luck. Okay, no problem.
SPEAKER_03Bye, Captain. Carl.
SPEAKER_00Seriously? He left us so he could watch a show?
SPEAKER_03I don't blame him. It sounds like a pretty good show.
SPEAKER_00It seems like Captain Carl always makes excuses and leaves before doing anything.
SPEAKER_03No way! He's a superhero, dude!
SPEAKER_00He calls himself a superhero, but can you think of any time he actually saved the day?
SPEAKER_03Hmm. Well, one time he now he left. He was gonna well no, but he's still my favorite superhero.
SPEAKER_00Why? What does he do that's special? What else is there to being a superhero other than saving the day?
SPEAKER_03I don't know, man! That's exactly why we need to do superhero training to answer tough questions like that. And to be prepared in case aliens attack.
SPEAKER_00Okay, well, let's do it then. How do we start superhero training?
SPEAKER_03Step one is having cool superhero names. My superhero name will be Supermonk. What's your superhero name, Ellie?
SPEAKER_00My superhero name will be Elephant.
SPEAKER_03Whoa, that is a cool name. Alright, Supermonk and Elephantom are going to train to be superheroes, and we will save the day.
SPEAKER_02So Can you fly? Are you strong? Can you lift the house? Can you grow big or shrink to the size of a mouse? Can you shoot fireballs or freeze a pool? Can you make yourself invisible? Well, that's cool. From what I hear, you might have what it takes to be a real superhero and not a fake, but you gotta use your powers for good and fight evil like a hero should. Superhero staff stuff superhero superhero sta One, two, three, come rescue me. Sorry to disturb, but it's an emergency. Calling all superheroes, please, please, it's good versus evil, don't you see? So if you're strong and brave, won't you help me out? Could you show me what a superhero is all about? I'm fighting villains and it's looking grim. If you help me, maybe we can win. Superhero styles. Superhero stacks. Superhero staff.
SPEAKER_01Superhero choir. Super roll.
SPEAKER_00What's next in our superhero training, super monk?
SPEAKER_03Next we have to practice our superpowers.
SPEAKER_00Good thinking. What superpower do you have?
SPEAKER_03Um I hadn't thought about that. I don't really know. Do you have superpowers?
SPEAKER_00Well, yes. With my big elephant ears, I have super hearing. And also I can shoot lasers with my trunk.
SPEAKER_03Whoa! Your superpowers are so cool!
SPEAKER_00Thanks. What superpowers do you want, Supermonk? Just pick some that you like.
SPEAKER_03Um I don't know what to pick. Uh and what if the ones I pick don't work?
SPEAKER_00How about this? We will run some tests to help figure out what your superpowers are.
SPEAKER_03Yes! Super tests! Let's do it! Super test one.
SPEAKER_00Okay, super test number one. Flying. Stand on this chair and then jump off and try to fly. I set up pillows on the floor in front of you in case you don't actually fly.
SPEAKER_03Cool! Time to fly in three, two, one! Whoa!
SPEAKER_00Oh no! Are you okay, monk?
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's super monk, and that hurt.
SPEAKER_00Why did you jump backwards?
SPEAKER_03I don't know. As I was in the air going backwards, I felt that this isn't right. What a disaster. I don't think flying should be my superpower.
SPEAKER_00Okay. You don't fly. No big deal. There are many superpowers left. Let's do the next super test.
SPEAKER_01Super test two.
SPEAKER_00Super test number two. Attacking. Maybe you can shoot lasers or webs or arrows.
SPEAKER_03Oh, this is exciting! Let's do it!
SPEAKER_00I'm going to pretend to be a bad guy, and I'm going to jump out and pretend to attack you. See if you shoot something at me.
SPEAKER_03Got it. Be prepared to be blasted with lasers. Or something cool.
SPEAKER_00Let me hide over here. Okay. Ready, monk?
SPEAKER_03Ready!
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna get you.
SPEAKER_03Oh yeah!
SPEAKER_00Well, you shot something, but it wasn't a laser. I don't think that counts as a superpower.
SPEAKER_01Ah nuts. Super test three.
SPEAKER_00Super test number three. Speed. Maybe you are super fast, Super Monk. Here, stand over there.
SPEAKER_03Okay, now what?
SPEAKER_00I'm going to stand here and drop this ball. Pretend the ball is a person who is falling and you have to catch them. As soon as you see me drop the ball, run over here using your super speed and catch the ball before it hits the ground. Easy. Let's go. Ready? And go.
SPEAKER_03No! I'll save you, ball! Hang on! I'm gonna catch you before you hit the ground! Here I come!
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00Well, you didn't get to the ball in time. In fact, you moved in slow motion for some reason. That was the opposite of what we were hoping for.
SPEAKER_03What's opposite?
SPEAKER_00Uh that one's a little hard to explain. Opposite means something that is completely different, like hot and cold. Those are opposites. So fast and slow are also opposites.
SPEAKER_03I think I understand what it means. Just like I'm the opposite of a superhero because I don't have a superpower. You have two, and I don't even have one.
SPEAKER_00You do, super monk. You just have to find it. Don't give up.
SPEAKER_03I wish Captain Carl had stayed here so he could teach me.
SPEAKER_00I can't imagine how that would have helped. But you know what? We could use a break. How about we read a Captain Carl book? That might inspire you.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, maybe. Let's try that.
SPEAKER_02And now a story. The ongoing adventures of Captain Carl, Volume 24, The Lake. Captain Carl was flying high above the city one warm summer day when his superheroing picked up a cry for help. Help! Help! cried a man in distress. Here comes Captain Carl. Captain Carl zoomed toward the cry down below. On the edge of the city was a large lake where people were swimming. A man was floating on an inflatable tube and had accidentally floated out into the middle of the deep lake. He was not a good swimmer and there were no lifeguards. His tube had a hole in it, and it was starting to lose air. Help! he cried. Captain Carl landed on the shore in the sand next to the crowd of onlookers. Thank goodness you're here, cried a woman. Please go help that man. He could drown. Oh, I can't do that, said Captain Carl. I'm uh I'm wearing my new suit, and if I get it wet, I could damage it. Seriously? said the woman. Your suit doesn't matter. Save that man. Help! cried the struggling man again. Uh in addition to my new suit, I also have a sore neck, said Captain Carl. I'm sure my doctor wouldn't want me swimming in my condition. Why did you come down here if you weren't even going to help? The woman asked. I was just curious, said Captain Carl. Best of luck. He leapt off the ground, but caught his foot on a chair. Instead of flying high into the sky, he flew straight into the lake close to the shore. My suit cried Captain Carl. My new suit. While Captain Carl flounged in the water, crying about his suit, the woman rushed to get a canoe. She paddled the canoe out into the middle of the lake and saved the struggling man. On the way back to the shore, she reluctantly picked up Captain Carl too. Thank you so much for saving me, said the man she saved. You are my hero. You're so much better than this guy, he said, pointing to Captain Carl, still crying about his suit. I guess this shows you don't need superpowers to save the day and be a hero, said the woman. You just need courage, and you need to use that courage wisely.
SPEAKER_00Hey, super monk. My superheroing is picking up something.
SPEAKER_03What is it?
SPEAKER_00I'm not sure. It sounds weird. Almost alien.
SPEAKER_03Almost alien? It's the aliens! Let's go save the day, elephant!
SPEAKER_00But you still don't have your superpower.
SPEAKER_03Yes, I do. My superpower is courage! Let's go!
SPEAKER_00All right, let's go.
SPEAKER_03There they are, Elephant. Four big green aliens. They are tall and slimy and have seven eyes and five feet and three butts. They're uglier than you.
SPEAKER_00Hey.
SPEAKER_03They have big alien guns too, so be careful. I'll distract them and you shoot them with your trunk lasers. I'll use uh I'll use this trash can lid as a shield.
SPEAKER_00Copy that, super monk.
SPEAKER_03Ready? Let's go. Hey aliens! Look at me! Bet you can't hit me! Ha! Missed me, missed me. Now you gotta kiss me! Get 'em, Elephant.
SPEAKER_00Trunk lasers ready to fire.
SPEAKER_03Way to go, Elephantum. Three of them exploded. There's only one left.
SPEAKER_00Uh they hit my trunk with their alien gun. I can't shoot lasers anymore. What do we do now?
SPEAKER_03Nobody hits my friend. Here. Let's see how you like getting hit with uh a seven-month-old banana. Hiya!
SPEAKER_00Monkey, you did it. You defeated the last alien, and you found your superpower. Throwing bananas.
SPEAKER_02Here comes Captain Carl. Don't worry, citizens. Captain Carl is here to save the day.
SPEAKER_03Captain Carl, you just missed it! We defeated all the aliens.
SPEAKER_02Oh gosh, I'm sorry. I would have been here sooner, but the stinky shoes show just ended.
SPEAKER_00I think you just waited to show up until the fight was over because you were scared.
SPEAKER_02So long, citizens, I'll see you the next time there is danger.
SPEAKER_03What a cool day! I finally got to be a real superhero. Oh, that was so cool. We defeated the aliens, and Ellie used his lasers and was like, and I threw a banana and I was like, yeah, yeah. Oh, so awesome! Oh man, thanks for joining us and witnessing my superhero-ness. I feel like I learned a lesson, but I don't know what it is! Woohoo, superhero! That was cool. We had fun with you. Let's do it again. We'll find more fun things to do. Oh yeah. Oh, it's not done. Uh, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna bring in the noise and bring in the trunk.
