Monkey Monkey Elephant!
1.11 - Build it!
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A monkey monkey monkey. I'm so fun. The monkey monkey monkey monkey song is done. Also, there's elephant. He's got shoes on his feet. And he walks on the street. And he's so cool. Yeah. Monkey said. Uh hey, how's it going?
SPEAKER_00Did you hear what I said?
SPEAKER_03Yes, I heard you.
SPEAKER_00What did I say?
SPEAKER_03You said. Monkey, did you hear what I said?
SPEAKER_00Before that, I said, you can cut this wood. We need two beams that are each two feet long. Then you have to nail them to this piece over here. Understand?
SPEAKER_03Yes, I do. You can count on me, Chief.
SPEAKER_00Are you sure you understand?
SPEAKER_03Nope. I mean, yes. I'm uh what was the question? Um Hey, when do we get to play with all these toys and tools and trucks and stuff?
SPEAKER_00Right now. Let's work together and build.
SPEAKER_03Cool! I love playing together.
SPEAKER_00I said working together, not playing. We have a job to do.
SPEAKER_03Oh. Um, could we have a job later? I want to explore and play with all the stuff and cause mischief.
SPEAKER_00Mischief?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, mischief. It means you know, I don't know what it means, but I want to do it.
SPEAKER_00Mischief means being silly and maybe even causing trouble. This is no time for mischief. I need you to help me build. But before you help me build, first we have to put on our safety glasses.
SPEAKER_03Of course! Safety glasses, check!
SPEAKER_00Now, let me give you a quick test, just to make sure you understand the tools and the job. I'm asking you to cut this wood. What tool are you going to use to cut the wood?
SPEAKER_03Oh no, I'm not good at tests. Uh, let's see. What tool do you use to cut wood? Okay, I know this. Alright, to cut paper, you use scissors, but scissors aren't strong enough to cut wood. Oh, um what is it called?
SPEAKER_00Um I'm sure you saw it before.
SPEAKER_03I saw it before. I saw it! A saw!
SPEAKER_00A saw, yes. You use a saw to cut wood. Very good. Next question. What tool do you use to hammer nails?
SPEAKER_03Nails? Oh gosh. Um nails. What tool do I use to hammer nails?
SPEAKER_00To hammer nails? You use a Oh a hammer! Yes, a hammer! You're doing great, monk. Last question. What do you have to do before you cut the wood?
SPEAKER_03Um, before I cut the wood?
SPEAKER_00Yes. Remember, I said we need two beans that are each two feet long. So before you cut the wood, you need to make sure that your cut will make them two feet long. That means you have to dance like a chicken! Measure. You have to measure the wood before cutting it.
SPEAKER_03That was my next guess. I have to measure the wood. It will be two feet.
SPEAKER_00That's it. Alright, ready to start building.
SPEAKER_03You bet your butts! Hands in! Construction on three. One, two, three, construction.
SPEAKER_02Alright, construction crew. What are we gonna build today? How about a chair? Let's build it, a table, let's build it, a fence, let's build it, let's build it, let's build it a house, let's build it, a tower, let's build it, a castle, let's build it, let's build it, let's build it, let's measure the pieces, let's do the pieces of this one, let's tell this one, let's drill this holes, let's drill the hole. It's looking good. Let's screw the screws, almost done, almost done, that's okay, that's okay. Let's fill the next one. Let's fill it a fight wreck. Let's build it a space check. Let's build it, let's build it, let's fill it on a car, let's fill that a roller coaster. Let's fill it a skateboard. Let's fill it, let's build it, let's spell it, let's fill it up, I can't fill it out, let's fill it on it, let's stop Let's build friendships, let's build it, sandwiches, let's build it, memories, let's build it, let's build it, let's build it, happiness, let's build it, laughter, let's build it, kindness, let's build it, let's build it, let's build it.
SPEAKER_03Okay, I have to measure two feet. Easy. I just put my two feet together. One, two, and then I mark it. Perfect. Two feet. Now, where is that uh the saw? Oh, there's the saw. All right, here it is. Let's saw. And then I saw this piece. Doot doot. Ooh, I think I did a great job. And now I hammer with my hammer. Hammer. How's it going, monk? Super duper! I already cut the wood. Hey Ellie, I forget. What are we building?
SPEAKER_00We're building a snowball stand.
SPEAKER_03Oh right, a snowball stand. And then after we build it, can we play?
SPEAKER_00No. Then we can sell snowballs to people. Say, monk, those pieces of wood you cut look very small. Did you measure them before you cut them?
SPEAKER_03I sure did. I measured two feet, just like you said. I put my two feet next to each other to measure.
SPEAKER_00Ah. Well, that's good thinking, but that's not what I meant. A foot is the thing you walk on, but it's also a unit of measurement. One foot equals twelve inches, and two feet equals twenty-four inches. Your feet are much smaller than that. To measure 24 inches, we need to use a tape measure.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that must be this thing with all the numbers on it. I pulled that part out until it broke, and then I kept pulling. I figured if I broke it by pulling, I can fix it by pulling, but that did not work. It's a mess.
SPEAKER_00Oh, how about I help you with this? We can work on it together.
SPEAKER_03Could we maybe work on this later? I really want to try out all these cool toys and trucks and cause mischief. How about you do this and I'll go do other stuff?
SPEAKER_00I guess so, but please don't try to do anything you don't know how to do. And please don't use any heavy machinery.
SPEAKER_03Sorry, elephant, I can't hear you. I seem to be walking away as words are coming out of your face, and now I can't hear those words. Whew, all right, on my own. Jeez, that guy works too much. Okay, independent monkey, ready to play. Where should I start? Oh, looky here. Heavy machinery. I'll use this bulldozer and this mixer at the same time. And this excavator. Oh, I love excavators! Monkey, what are you doing? I am driving all the cool, huge, awesome construction equipment and building uh whatever it is that we're building.
SPEAKER_00Well, we were building a snowball stand. And it looks to me like you dug a giant hole and filled it with a bunch of concrete and wood.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, isn't it great?
SPEAKER_00Not really. It's a mess. You didn't follow the plan. And how are we supposed to sell snowballs without a snowball stand?
SPEAKER_03I don't know, man. We can follow plans later, and we can sell snowballs whenever. Let's play.
SPEAKER_00I think we should work together to get the job done right.
SPEAKER_03Well, I think we should play together and just goof off.
SPEAKER_00We can't always just play, monkey.
SPEAKER_03Why not?
SPEAKER_00Well, because I don't know. Because we just can't.
SPEAKER_03You seem stressed. Why don't you come play? You can have fun and chill out and be silly.
SPEAKER_00I am stressed. I think I'm going to take a break. I don't understand why monkeys just so silly all the time. Sometimes we have to be serious and get work done. It can be so frustrating. He is right though. I need to relax. Maybe I'll read a book.
SPEAKER_01And now, a story. It was a beautiful day. The sun was shining and the birds were singing. Sam was dribbling a soccer ball in the yard by herself. Sam loved soccer and always seemed to have a ball at her feet. Today she was working on different ways to turn around while dribbling a ball. Sam smiled as her dad pulled up to the house in his car, having just arrived home from work. As he got out of the car, she asked, Hey Dad, want to play soccer? I'm sorry, honey, I can't today, her dad replied. I'm very busy and I won't be able to play until Saturday. What day is it today? Today's uh Wednesday. Oh, okay. The next day was Thursday. Sam was outside playing soccer. It was a beautiful day. The sun was shining and the birds were singing. She was working on shooting the soccer ball, but it wasn't as much fun without a goalie. When her dad came home from work, she again asked if he would play with her. Not until Saturday, honey, said her dad. I'm sorry, it's just a very busy week. The following day was Friday. Once again, Sam was outside playing soccer, and once again it was a beautiful day with the sun shining and the birds singing. Today she was practicing corner kicks, but she had nobody to kick to. Again, her dad came home from work and again she asked if he would play. And again, he said he was too busy. Not until Saturday. Finally, the next day, it was Saturday. Sam's father woke up, finally ready to play soccer with her. He hustled downstairs and saw his daughter sitting in the doorway, soccer ball under her arm, staring outside at the pouring rain. Definitely not soccer weather. He was so sad and felt so guilty. The whole week he chose work over playing with Sam, and now it was too wet to play. He understood then that he should have made time to play with her while he had the chance, at least for a little bit. But he decided to do what he could to make things right. He moved all the furniture around in the house and created their very own indoor soccer stadium, and they had the greatest indoor soccer tournament the world has ever known. Her dad didn't even get upset when they accidentally hit the ball into a lamp and broke it. He was just so happy that he had a chance to play and cause mischief.
SPEAKER_03Excuse me, sir, are you elephant?
SPEAKER_00Why, yes, I am.
SPEAKER_03Oh, well then this is for you.
SPEAKER_00Oh, how exciting. A letter. Let me see. It says, Dear elephant, come play with me. Sincerely, monkey. And every single word is spelled wrong.
SPEAKER_03Well, do you want to play and cause mischief?
SPEAKER_00Yes, I do, my friend.
SPEAKER_03Yes! Where do you want to start? Should we drive heavy machinery and smash into each other and break everything on the planet and see how fast we can go, then see how slow we can go, then smash into each other, then play construction vehicle freeze tag, then play freeze dance and see if we can freeze toys in the freezer?
SPEAKER_00That sounds completely ridiculous. And fun. Let's do it.
SPEAKER_03Two hours later. Now, wasn't that fun, Ellie?
SPEAKER_00It actually was. Even though we didn't build anything.
SPEAKER_03Oh, but we did build something, dude! We built friendship, we built memories, and we built the hugest mess in the history of messes. We accomplished so much.
SPEAKER_00You know, for once I think you're actually right. Thank you for reminding me to play, monk. Do me a favor. In the future, keep reminding me to play and be silly sometimes.
SPEAKER_03I would be happy to, my friend. Ooh, I can come up with a code word, and when I say that code word, you have to instantly be silly and do something crazy.
SPEAKER_00Uh, I don't think that's necessary.
SPEAKER_03What's the code word? How about potato or booty or potato booty?
SPEAKER_00No code word.
SPEAKER_03The magic or carrot or window or pooper scooper or pooper scooper potato booty or magic carrot window pooper scooper potato booty. That was so much fun! We were going to build a snowball stand, which would have been cool, and we could totally do that some other time, but sometimes you just have to go crazy and play! So we went crazy and played with every single toy that we have. You should see the mess. I love it! That was cool. We had fun with you. Let's do it again. We'll find more fun things to do. Oh yeah. Oh, it's not done. Uh, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey, monkey.
SPEAKER_01Oh, when do I get to be in an episode again?
