Power of Storytelling in Healing

Speaker 1

Hi guys, and welcome to a mini episode of Language of the Soul podcast, where life is story. As always, I would like to encourage you to please subscribe or follow us on whatever platform you use to listen to podcasts. Do not shy away from YouTube. It actually really helps us build our platform. There is supplemental content on YouTube that we just can't fit into this format, so that's the bonus, but you know, the goal is to get the word out more than anything else. So building our platform is the best way to do that, and if you subscribe, not only will you get notifications whenever an episode drops, but it does help us indirectly generally build our platform, and the message we want to get out is really not a political agenda, but it's a human agenda, if anything, and that would be an awareness of story, the cultural role of storytelling and its power to transform the individual and then, by extension, society at large. So, literally, policy, the codes we live by, which are a product of paradigms and worldviews and norms and mores, and all of that which are a product of the stories we've internalized. We make a great case for it collectively when you tie all the episodes together and, of course, in the 370 something I think page book Language of the Soul, the beauty of today's episode, virginia's flying solo. It's a really beautiful piece of I don't want to put words in her mouth but about narrative therapy. So not only does she literally reinforce the principles I lay out in Language of the Soul, the book, but she does it in a way that's really that just lands because she references different episodes of this podcast.

Speaker 1

On this podcast I do reference the book from time to time, but there's not always airtime to sort of go back and reinforce a principle by citing a specific study that appears in my book. So I don't always get that satisfaction of really sharing. You know the hordes of research I did and the preparation that went into the book. But this is actually a great example because everything Virginia mentions is laid out in great detail in the book and it might inspire you to investigate further. And again, she references specific episodes. So that also helps connect the dots. But I just feel very vindicated after I actually edited the episode, meaning I did some EQing and some levels, things like that and it was really fun for me to listen to but also vindicating, because she does hit on a lot of the principles in the book itself, but again in a sort of holistic, cohesive way that connects dots by referencing our episodes. So please do give it a listen and I guess I'm going to turn it over to our producer, extraordinaire Virginia.

Speaker 1

Now, some of you may know she has a background in mental health and in the spirit of the podcast. Right, you can talk about story, as we do from week to week with a variety of guests with different backgrounds, through the lens of sociology. You can talk about story from an anthropology perspective. You can talk about story from a Jungian archetypal perspective, from a comparative religion perspective, psychological there are so many levels on which it operates. But I do love that if you take the psychology lens, you can incorporate all of the above and that's what narrative therapy does. Narrative therapy reinforces literally the concept of catharsis coined by Aristotle ages ago. So anyway, give it a listen and take it in and enjoy Without further ado our producer, extraordinaire Virginia Grenier.

Speaker 2

Hello and welcome to a special mini episode of Language of the Soul podcast. It's me today, your host, virginia Grenier. Today we're exploring a topic close to my heart and pivotal to the field of mental health. It's the transformative power of narrative therapy and storytelling. Narrative therapy offers us a unique lens through which we view our lives, not as a series of events that happen to us, but as stories that we author and can rewrite kind of the basis of our podcast here at Language of the Soul. Let's dive into this journey together, as I help us all examine how our narratives shape our identities and how changing these narratives can lead to a profound healing a topic you may have heard once or twice here on this podcast.

Speaker 2

In the world of psychology, narrative therapy stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment. It's developed by the visionaries Michael White and David Epson. Hope and Empowerment. It's developed by the visionaries Michael White and David Epson. Narrative therapy is based on the premise that we can find new meaning and possibilities in our lives by reauthoring our stories. We shouldn't be afraid to share both the highlights and the lowlights of our lives. It's those stories and memories that help set us apart and give us that rich tapestry in our life. By using the approach of narrative therapy, it encourages us to view ourselves as separate from our problems, allowing us to reclaim our personal agency and autonomy something you've heard many of our guests talk about here. So during my studies and time hosting this podcast, I've witnessed that incredible power of narrative therapy. It's a tool that enables individuals to navigate through their struggles not as victims, but as heroes in their own epic tales. Stories have the ability to help us learn about others and to find understanding and empathy for them and their situations, including our own. Understanding and empathy for them and their situations, including our own. Whether we actually know the individual or not, hearing their story invokes feelings within us. The stories we share on this podcast from our guests are from all walks of life and they highlight storytelling's universatility and healing capacity.

Speaker 2

So what's the science behind storytelling? I mean, you hear us talk about it all the time. Well, storytelling isn't just an art. It's deeply rooted in science. There's a book. It's called the Healing Power of Storytelling. It's by Brewster and Zimmerman, and it highlights how storytelling activates our brains. It fosters empathy and enhances our social connection. That's why we sit around the campfire and tell stories all the time, be it ghost stories or just stories of our lives, every time we tell our story and someone else who cares bears witness to it, we turn off our body's stress responses. It flips off those toxic stress hormones like cortisol and epinephrine and it flips on the relaxation responses which is releasing healing hormones like oxytocin, dopamine and our endorphins. This is why stories feel so personal and why they have the power to bring us together. It's why we love going to the movies, it's why we love reading books.

Speaker 2

One memorable conversation on this podcast was with Johnny Tan, whose life story exemplifies how narratives can feed not just our minds but our souls, like a good recipe passed down through generations. Johnny Tan's experiences and the life lessons he gathered from his nine moms have nourished his and countless other lives, showcasing the therapeutic essence of sharing our stories. It's fascinating to consider that we can alter our brain chemistry through narrative, increasing that oxytocin level and strengthening our bonds with others. If you want to look into some research to support this others, if you want to look into some research to support this, well, I highly recommend exploring the article the Healing Power of Storytelling on Therapistcom, which really goes into how stories can aid in mental health recovery. The author, amy, a family marriage therapist, says quote writing helps people find a voice when they may not be able to otherwise. Many of us struggle to talk about our fears or trauma because we don't have the words for what we're feeling, or we may be carrying too much shame or guilt to allow room for processing end quote. She later goes on in that article to say quote we clearly benefit from telling our own stories, but what about engaging with other people's stories? It turns out those are good for us as well. Literature has been used as a therapeutic tool since the early 19th century End quote. So there you go.

Speaker 2

Storytelling is central to what it means to be human. We think of ourselves as rational observers weighing up evidence. But even this is just a story. Nothing can make sense unless it fits into a narrative. In a very real sense, story is the way we give meaning to our existence. Our stories are our reality. It's a testament to the incredible power of narrative and how it heals and transforms us from within. So you've heard Dominic talk about how things can be cathartic when it comes to storytelling.

Speaker 2

The concept of catharsis through storytelling isn't anything new, yet it remains profoundly effective. Catharsis, a term from ancient Greek drama refers to the emotional release derived from engaging in storytelling. This process of sharing personal stories, especially those laden with adversity, can act as a release valve for pent-up emotions, leading to a profound sense of liberation and relief. It illuminates how sharing our narratives can serve as a powerful tool for emotional release and healing. It's a reminder that our stories hold the power to cleanse us from our burdens and connect us with others on a deeply human level.

Speaker 2

Additionally, there's another article out there on psychology today, called why your Story Matters. It provides a compelling look into how our personal narratives shape our identities and influence our mental health. The article talks about how rewriting our narrative allows us to explore our unconsciousness and go deep into what we know as our own journey to find the dragon within us, our ego, that's holding us back from living up to the fullest potential. However, story is more than that, quote the article says. Through storytelling, we can understand how certain narratives are downloaded onto us by society, including what we think we deserve. End quote. That's powerful for us to hear. Anyone looking to understand the importance of storytelling in our lives should check out that article. Okay, so let's reflect a little bit on some of the other guests we've had on, like Roslyn, whose narrative was intricate about the relationship between cultural narratives and personal healing, it's clear that storytelling offers a path to catharsis. We learned in that episode that through storytelling we can develop an understanding of how we've learned our assumptions and how certain narratives, like self-sacrifice or submitting to oppressive social norms, get passed from generation to generation.

Speaker 2

So how do we do a practical approach to narrative therapy or storytelling in our lives? According to narrative therapists, incorporating narrative therapy into our lives can be as simple as journaling or as structured as participating in a therapeutic storytelling workshop. These methods offer reflective space to process our experiences and to contemplate the narratives we've lived by. Stories organize our thoughts, help us find meaning and purpose. They also help us establish our identity in a confusing and sometimes lonely world. Thus, it's important to realize that stories we tell ourselves and others when we talk about our lives. So here's a little thing to think about.

Speaker 2

The act of writing and sharing story is a powerful testament to resilience of the human spirit, as we've explored in our conversations with many of the guests here at Language of the Soul. Storytelling acts as a mirror reflecting worldviews and the societal norms that shape our existence. It's a reminder that every story holds the potential for healing and transformation. Every story holds the potential for healing and transformation. So as we contemplate the future of story, I'm drawn to the possibilities it presents for our societal healing. According to philosophy behind narrative therapy, storytelling is how we make meaning and find purpose in not just our existence but in the world.

Speaker 2

The interconnectivity of our narratives, as explored in an article by LinkedIn. The interconnectivity of our narratives, as explored in an article by LinkedIn called the Healing Power of Narratives, suggests that by sharing our stories, we not only heal ourselves but also foster a deeper understanding and empathy within our communities and global world. Like a book that switches viewpoints from one character to another, our life has multiple threads of narrative, with different perspectives, areas of focus and points of interest. Here's another guest we had on, josh Lloyd-Fox, where he shared how writing and creative expression not only serve as a personal sanctuary but also as a beacon for other narratives. Through his struggles, our problems can feel overwhelming, confusing and sometimes unsolvable, but they are never truly unsolvable. Personal stories of creativity and resilience inspire us to view our narratives not as fixed scripts but as that evolving tale of hope and renewal, kind of like the hero's journey.

The Power of Storytelling

Speaker 2

This technique is known as re-authoring or re-storytelling, so I want to leave you with this thought in closing. I want to express my gratitude to you, our listeners, for embarking on this exploration with us. Every time we release a new episode, the stories we've shared and discussed on this podcast highlight the healing power of story, a theme that resonates to every episode in our daily lives. As we move forward, let's carry with us the understanding that our stories are not just tales of the past but beacons for the future, guiding us toward healing, connection and, ultimately, transformation. If our journey through the realms of narrative therapy and storytelling has expired, you please consider supporting our show. Together, we can continue to explore and share the transformative power of story. Thank you for joining me today. Until next time, keep sharing your stories, for they have the power to heal not just the soul, but the world.
