Bloomberg, Newsweek, and a ton of international media is currently reporting that Americans are applying for visas to other countries in record numbers. And in this video we're gonna be describing what is going on as two American expats and digital nomads currently spending most of their time in Mexico, and who also run the business helping Americans and Canadians, and a ton of people actually. From all over the world, move abroad because we are seeing similar trends, not just on this YouTube channel, but also in the business. Welcome to Entrepreneur Expat. I'm Amanda. This is Justin, our driver. Today we're on our way to Guadalajara. We gotta run a couple of errands. Uh, some of you know that we recently are just moved more to a rental in the Lake Chapala area, so we gotta go back into the city. So we're doing net time today, right where we're recording and, uh, driving at the same time. Don't worry, it's hands free and Justin has his eye on the road. Anyway, on this channel, uh, we talk all about doing international business. We talk about being digital nomads. We talk about investing in other countries, tax strategy, uh, current events that affect expats and digital nomads all over the world. So if that's something that you're interested in, make sure to subscribe. And hit the notification bell so you don't miss a single video that we have it coming out on the channel. That would, now that we're more settled in the new place, we're gonna have a lot more stuff coming out because the world is changing very rapidly. And if you yourself are interested in moving abroad, then you can go to entrepreneur expat.com/consult and we can help you out. Okay, so what is actually going on? Let me give context so you can keep your eye on the road. Uh, let me give context. Um, and that is that in the last couple of months and as little as three days ago. On Newsweek at the time of recording this, a lot of news outlets are reporting that Americans are seeking visas in other countries in America. A lot of American refugees, basically American refugees. You never thought you'd see those headlines, but that's what they're saying is basically American migrants. Fleeing to Europe, I think was one of the headlines I've also seen. Seen it in, uh, Turkish media. I saw it in some European media. American media, uh, in Mexico, Bloomberg, Bloomberg, Newsweek in Mexico. Obviously, there's a lot of tension right now if you've seen it in the news. Uh, because there's a lot of Americans moving to Mexico also in record numbers. So what the F is going on in the world that suddenly you are seeing Americans leaving America the best country in the whole world. What? Yes. En yes. Um, so. Do you wanna say what we've been seeing just on the YouTube channel and since we started it, and then kind of the bump we've seen since Trump got elected and what we're seeing now? Because we've definitely seen similar trends just in, you know, being in expat spaces and running this channel and running a business. Absolutely. And, and I wanna make it really clear too, like we're not pro-Trump or anti-Trump. Um, we left before Trump. We left before Trump. Uh, I think Trump has done some good things and I think he's done some really shitty things, right? Uh, so, so yes. Uh, well, I would say actually before, more than now, a lot of the hysteria was like, if that orange man gets into office, then I'm leaving the country and then everybody would be threatening leaving to Canada, which in my opinion is kind of stupid. Like, why are you gonna go, if you're gonna move to another country, why go to like a more, more locked down authoritarian country that makes absolutely. Uh, no sense. So why don't you just go to Mexico anyway? But I think most Americans just don't know the situation Yeah. In Canada. So they think Canada's better. Right. But, but point. But when you talk to Canadians and they're like, no, we're a shit show too. Point is, um, there's, uh, there's, there's a lot of people that were just kind of, you know, doing the talk. And saying, Hey, we're gonna leave. Uh, and by the way, just just a side note, since we're on the road here, I don't know if you guys can see it, but, uh, a lot of people think, you know, Mexico is just like dirt roads and, uh, a lot of poverty and uh, and all that and tumbleweeds rolling everywhere. There's a Maserati, SUV behind us. And I think he's upset'cause we're going too slow. Literally a Maserati, right? Tailing our ass right here on the highway. Also heading into the city from the country also heading into the city from the country. So for those of you guys that still haven't actually. Been to Mexico, but like the real Mexico, not, you know, your resort at Cabo San Lucas, please actually come check it out. That's just a side note. And if you are looking like Amanda said earlier, to get support, uh, on moving out of the country because you're also sick of the political system or Trump or the Democrats or whatever is going on, and we'll solve it, we'll, we'll tell you in a little bit why exactly people are deciding to leave the us, but if you're sick of it based on what they're telling us, just go to entrepreneur expat.com/consult and we can help you through. The entire relocation process from visas to accounting issues, legal issues, everything like that. We've got a team that specializes in all those different things. So what's going on here? So a lot of people were threatening before, you know, when Trump got into his first term and saying things like. Oh, if that guy gets in into office, I'm leaving. But see, the thing is, before it was really just a ton of sort of threats and, and empty words. Uh, now we're actually seeing record numbers of visa applications, even in places like Europe. Now. It's one thing, you know, you could, you could kind of, you can kind of maybe even rule it out as a. As a canary in a coal mine, if a lot of people are moving to Mexico,'cause you could say, you know what? They're retired. Maybe they want a better quality of life or a little bit less money, whatever. Europe really isn't that much cheaper than the US right? And so that kind of rules out the people that are maybe just moving solely for, let's say, financial reasons and the taxes are re And the taxes are terrible too. Yeah. A lot of people that are going there might not even quite know that. They're just like, oh yeah, I could go to Spain or whatever and ask Shakira. Her hips don't lie and neither do her 10 forties. So, uh, Shakira got really screwed. She had to, she had to actually end up spending, oh, we got some tope on the road here. She had to end up spending a bunch of money, I think it was about 8 million. Yeah, 8 million in taxes to Spain. Even when she was living in The Bahamas, they were very serious. So. Why are Americans moving to Europe even when the taxes are higher, even when in a lot of cases, you know, you're not, I would argue in many ways there are, they are politically better, especially some more of the neutral countries like Hungary, for example, than, than the us. They're, they're a little bit less. Politically aggressive than the US in a lot of ways. Um, but yeah, why, why are they going to Europe? Like this is really bad, uh, in terms of America and it's, well, the, the United States, I should say, and its reputation. If people are now really starting to leave in droves and actual visa applications in Europe are going up, well. Uh, political climate, whether you like Trump, whether you hate Trump, um, he's certainly polarizing. And Trump, or no, Trump, like what, what the Republicans and the Democrats are doing with all these bills. All these spending bills. There's some good stuff in there. Yes, absolutely. Um, there's also some really crazy stuff and there, there are some things where you're like, why are we spending, for example, more and more and more money on foreign wars when people in our own country are starving and homeless and on drugs? Like, why, why would you do that? Right, right. Um, and yeah, there are reasons, but most of them I think come, come down to. Uh, at least the, the legitimate reasons come down to America wanting to maintain its political, uh, superpower around the world. So, I, I don't, you know, support those, those foreign wars and neither do a lot of people. So that, that's a big thing. It's, you pay a lot in taxes, yet still your money is going to things that have absolutely no benefit to you whatsoever. It's going to foreign lands where, uh, at the end of the day you are ending up, um, in a, in a worse off position when you're enriching. Governments and militaries of other countries with those tax dollars. That's also kind of how the Roman Empire fell. They had a bunch of wars going on all over the place. All over, and all the S's some were spread thin. And I think if you, if you get like deep into the politics, it's the fact that the gaslighting of the American people is getting so strong. Like if you look at everything they say that they're doing, like, you know, we're doing this to protect you. We're invading Iran to protect Americans. We're, we're, we're doing this thing in Ukraine to, to protect Americans and protect Europe and our allies and this and that. And it's a load of shit. I mean, it's, it's a complete load of shit. They're doing it because the, the people that are in power politically wanna stay in power. It's, it's as simple as that. It's not benefiting the average American. Um, you look at like Trump's bill for example's, actually cutting Medicare and cutting food. Medicaid, uh, Medicaid. Sorry, it's cutting Medicaid. It's cutting food stamps, but increasing military. Well, I'm sure they're gonna cut Medicare too. I'm sure they're gonna cut, uh, social security, like it's all, it's all in the chopper block. Yeah. Like we don't expect Social security will be around by the time we can. Qualifying for it. No, and this brings me, I don't make my life based on that. This brings me to my next point, which is we're still paying into that system. Even as Americans living abroad, we're still paying into the social security system. We're still paying into the Medicare system, which both, like I said, are definitely going to get cut if they haven't already been. Um, so that's, that's on the chopping block yet trillions of dollars in, in defense and, and foreign wars and everything else. And defense. Right. Well, I think you bring up a really good point, which is I think a lot of Americans are starting to leave, and this is what we've heard from a lot of our clients that we're helping to relocate and get residencies and things like that, is that a lot of people just feel like their values are no longer aligned. With what's going on in the United States, and we're seeing it from both angles, right? So obviously, you know, obviously we've had an uptick in people who do not support Trump, uh, coming to this channel or, you know, applying for services or working with us and things like that. Uh, but it's not, so obviously they don't feel like their values are in alignment with what's going on. Um, in the United States, but we also hear it from people who are more conservative, like actual conservatives, not like whatever insanity is going on in the United States right now. Like, like people who are not, are looking at the fiscal situation Yeah. Of the United States and they're like, Houston, we have a problem and I am fiscally conservative, but I don't necessarily support all the agendas that that Trump is, is putting out there. Um, because they're not conservative agendas. They're spend a bunch of money and raise the debt ceiling. And that's not, that's not conservatism. And it definitely is not libertarianism. Yeah. So we kind of hear it from all ends. I think people just feel like there's no longer a values alignment. And we hear that from both conservatives and liberals, um, that there's no longer in alignment with values. And I've oftentimes said that if we just get to like the bare bones, brass tacks of things like when it comes to like wars, no one wants. To go out, be spending money on all these wars. No one's okay with that. Uh, you know, liberal or conservative American people, you know, citizens, uh, no one's okay with the cost of living in the United States right now. Liberal, no one's okay with the fact that, you know, the United States for some reason has a population totally addicted to drugs. And, and I'll say on, on the cost of, on the cost of living thing, because I think that's really important, you know, um, to fix the cost of living. You know, you look at plans, uh, like what Kamala was talking about when she was running for president. You look at things like, uh, oh, we're just, these, these grocery stores are just price gouging and so we're gonna, how it works, gonna control the prices so that everything comes down. No, no, no. That is socialism. And granted, I think there's actually a, and you look at the flip side of that with this Republican government where they're also trying to basically do, do price fixing. Uh, for certain goods and commodities that are, that are related to the military, there's a big part of that. And the big, big beautiful bill, um, where they basically are also price fixing. And I'm like, this is really weird. You have like the, the, you know, the socialists and then. I, I don't think Trump is necessarily a fascist. Uh, maybe I'm wrong, but you look at the two, two polar extremes, right? The far left. Okay, let's price fix far right, also price fix. And we can compel they're both getting, yeah, right. We can compel these companies to do whatever we want to produce defense things, which technically if, if, uh, if you guys are, have been, have been getting in on the, the action between, uh, Elon and Trump, technically Trump could basically take over Elon's SpaceX business'cause it's a defense contractor. I'm like. Yeah. I don't think though that's good on either side, but cost of living is not, is not well, number one. It's not fixed by pri, by by price. Fixing number two, it's not started because of big, bad, greedy corporations. I. Yes, there's an element of large corporations. Well, the more money our government keeps printing, the more expensive. That's what I'm, everything that's I'm getting to Yes, because the value of the dollar goes down. Yeah. And that's what both of these parties have in common. They keep printing more fucking money. E exactly. And so what happens is you, you print more and more money, you cause inflation and eventually hyperinflation where the value of the dollar just, just starts to sink. Yes, it's a global reserve currency now, but that's not. Going to be certain for that much longer into the future tale. Yeah. Yeah. A lot of Americans don't know about that either. There's, there's other groups of countries. There's a lot going on with currency in the world between crypto bricks. There's a lot of things that are shifting and changing, and I think Americans that are smart, both liberal and conservative, are seeing all these changes going on in the world. They're becoming more educated. About what's happening. They're seeing both sides getting more authoritarian. It's not one or the other. They're both getting more authoritarian. Another example of the, and they're not comfortable with that. I think we've covered interesting points. Like it's like a values mismatch is a lot of what we're hearing right now. So Americans who have the means to, they have online businesses. Uh, they already have investments, things like that. They're out, uh, they're out more easily arguably than people looking for jobs. I think what the Bloomberg article said was that it was people, the work visas, uh, applications or what were through the roof. Mm-hmm. Guys, if you run your own business or you have investments, it's gonna be a lot easier. Um, for you to leave. Like it just is what it is. Work visas are a lot more complicated. Um, that means, yeah. You're not gonna find a job in Mexico. Yeah. As an American making enough to sustain yourself as an American or Europe or, or anywhere. Well, you know, and even if you could find that job, you're not gonna be able to, to, to obtain a, a work permit for it other than in some very, very special extenuating circumstances. Like you're working for a multinational already and then they, they send you off to another country. But in that case, you're probably still. Gonna be part of, you know, the tax system of one of the two countries and paying most of your salary in taxes and they're not gonna pay you an American salary. They're gonna pay you a Mexican salary. So yeah, that does happen. Yeah. That, that's not, I mean, that does happen. As soon as they find out that you're living somewhere else, they try to cut your salary. That does happen. No, I mean, even if they, they legitimately got a job with somebody that, that let them work in a Mexican branch, for example. They're not gonna be making. Enough to lift that. Well, as an expat, no, they'd be making a Mexican, they might be making a decent salary for a Mexican, but that, that, that takes out, uh, all of the arbitrage component of this entire thing. Right? So along the lines of values, mismatched, right? You can see people who are saying the United States is not fiscally sound. There's people who just don't like Donald Trump. Granted, we saw an uptick of Americans moving to Mexico before Donald Trump. Um. That was because of COVID and the pandemic and Mexico was open and you saw a lot of Canadians and Americans being like, Mexico's more free'cause they're actually open. But that again, would be a value thing. Mm-hmm. Uh, cost of living is huge. That's one of the reasons why Americans are. Or leaving the United States. That is something that we hear often. Uh, we just described that cost of living becomes a problem when the government keeps printing more money that it doesn't have. So that's an issue that we see both parties doing every time they're in office or, you know, keeps spending money on military, but not on the American people. So that causes a ton of issues. Um, in addition to that, one thing that we've heard a lot is just quality of life. Um, that is something that we hear quite often is quality of life in general. So if you go to other countries, you know, whether and Europe is included in this, uh,'cause that's where a lot of people are going to, and Mexico's included in this for sure. Um, Southeast Asia is included in this, like one of the things that people say is better food quality than what they get in the United States. Better healthcare, yeah. Than what they get in the United States. A lot of people in the US have gone bankrupt because of how expensive healthcare was. You Yeah. It's medical bills into the emergency room for, for something simple and you end up with a$6,000 bill. Yeah. Where in Mexico, without even having, like that's with insurance, a lot of cases, like they'll bill you thousands and in Mexico you can go to the ER or urgent care. I mean, if you go to like an urgent care type of thing that's in the, in the pharmacy, maybe, maybe you're out 20 bucks. Yeah. If that, yeah. Um, an actual emergency room. I mean, I, I was in the ER once for like a stomach virus a couple years ago in Guadalajara in one of the like top tier hospitals. Uh, and I think it cost me about three$50. Yeah, total. And that was, I was in there for almost 12 hours. I had a bunch of IV drips and like. Like a, like a whole smorgasbord of, of tests and stuff and, and a, a, what was it? A gastroenterologist visit and whatever, everything included for under 400 bucks. Speaking of Guadalajara, we got here pretty quickly into the city anyway. Yeah, we did. Now we're gonna, now we're in the, now we're in traffic, city traffic, but we got, we got into South Guadalajara about 40 minutes now. We hit the traffic. Yeah. Um, so I think quality of life is a major thing for Americans. Uh, I forgot who it was I was having this conversation with the other day. I think it was one of our neighbors, uh, in the new place where we're at right now, or, oh, no, it was, uh, the Italian woman that we met in Ahah, we met in Italian, expat, uh, in Ahah. She's been in Mexico a long time. She's married to a Mexican, had her kids here. Uh, she's between Italy and, and Mexico. Uh, but she lived in the United States. She has family in the United States, and she was saying, you know, part of the issue is there's no quality of life. In the United States and she was saying like her ADA or somebody, some family member of hers, I don't remember. She goes, all she does is like in California, is get in the car for two hours to commute, to work, spends eight to 10 hours at her job, then commutes another two hours. That's not a life. Mm-hmm. And then on top of that, you're paying, you know, in California, like 40 upwards of 40% of your money goes to the government. They don't know what they're doing in California, clearly, as we've seen. And then in addition to that. Like, that's not a life, that's not, and that's how a lot of people are living in the United States. You know, they're, you know, two hours commuting, eight hours at a job. Um, and then in addition to that, like what are you getting for all the taxes that you're paying, as you were saying earlier, that a lot of people are getting very upset about it, and your country's in chaos and you can't pay your bills. Yep. So it's kind of like, okay. I think a lot of Americans, to your point before, it was just a lot of talk. Um, we did see an uptick since the pandemic of Americans moving to other countries because they felt very uncomfortable with, for example, how drastic California was in handling the pandemic. So they're like, I'm going to Mexico, for example. So we did see an uptick, I think for the Mexican visa applications. It went through the roof. Between like 2020 and 2024. And I assume it's only increasing based on what we're seeing over on our end in terms of requests and applications and, and things coming in. Um, so it was already happening and then obviously, you know, with the election of Donald Trump, we got a, a bump in it. But you know what I was thinking, and I'll end it here. We called this a year ago and we said, no matter who comes out as president, it's gonna get chaotic and you're gonna see Americans trying to leave and it's gonna get harder to go to other countries. Yeah. And we keep saying that and nobody really, I mean, some people believe us and some people actually have hired us to help'em fix all that and uh, and get the residency and things like that, but. Um, most people listen to that and well, you know what, why don't you, why don't you talk a little bit about how you, you were feeling when I said, Hey, Amanda, three years ago, almost, Hey Amanda. You know, let's, three years ago. Exactly. Let's, two years ago, yeah. Let's just move, move to Guadalajara, come to Mexico with me. Get your residency. Remember that. Oh yeah. I was like, oh dude, you're crazy. Like why would I do that? Well, first of all I was like, well, I could just live off a tourist visa and be six months here. Six months over there. Yep. Granted, we're now revisiting the idea of spending six months in Mexico and six months in another country or something like that. But you know, now that we have the residency and Oh, that was almost an accident. What? Over there with that truck. Oh yeah. People are crazy. Yeah. Driving in Mexico, driver crazy. Um, but basically, um, you know, now that I have residency and I see what's been going on and. I've learned a lot more, not just about what's going on in Mexico, but also in a lot of other countries. Um, you know, it's just becoming clear that the world is really changing in some serious ways. I mean, we, this is a video for another time, but we could even talk about how you should have like residencies and bank accounts and all kinds of stuff spread out through different countries. Um, but that's a video for another time. Basically, you know, I've just been seeing, you know, the shifts going on and I see a lot of my friends and colleagues on both sides in the United States, like full on panicking and getting more stressed, and then I see things in Mexico, you know, even talking to Mexicans, there's just like a general sense of optimism that you just don't see. Yeah. In the United States because Mexico I think is on a, on an upward trend in the us. Uh, people, I mean, it's almost like Stockholm Syndrome, especially in California. Oh my goodness. Um, but it's, people are, are so used to struggling. Um, so they're almost just like jaded and they're just, just sort of, uh, what's the word? Like, uh, accustomed to just suffering, think struggling. Like you think this as it gets Yeah. Yeah. And yeah, and they're, they're brainwashed to think that America is really the best country in the world. There is no best country in the world. It's not a thing. And I think that's, it's not, it's, it's where the best country is for you and newsflash, it's probably not the country you were born in for being honest. Yeah. So I think that's a good place to just kind of end it, um, because it's like we said, like it's being reported in the news right now. We've seen obviously uptick in on our analytics on this YouTube channel. We've had a surge in requests and applications for people. Uh, wanting to leave the United States. We are in a town tunnel right now. Mm-hmm. Uh, we've seen a surge in people wanting to leave. So, you know, I just think it's interesting that it's, to your point, like people before used to just talk and now they're actually doing it, and I think that's one of the things that we see as a big shift. Yeah. And a big change. And I suspect it's going to continue. Absolutely. We'll see what ends up happening. Anyways, thanks so much for giving us your time today.
