With all of the political turmoil in the US since Trump got elected and even before, so many Americans have been asking us, how can I move to Canada? They think that Canada is like this dream place free from all of the politics of the US and with more freedoms and uh, better lifestyle and all of these other things. And frankly, they might be a little bit misguided in a lot of ways. If you're thinking, well, I can just go to Canada to escape all of the totalitarianism going on and all these other things that are happening. Right now in the US you may actually want to think about a different place, perhaps somewhere in Latin America, especially Mexico. And in this video we're gonna talk about why that might be a smarter move. I'm Justin and on this channel Entrepreneur, expat. We discuss everything to do with living the life of your dreams abroad, moving to another country and establishing your, your life there. Having an an amazing life in a different country and building a location, independent income stream so that you can do that as well as helping people. Are already well off financially. Perhaps they're retired or they have remote businesses, figure out all of the different logistical concerns for actually making that move happen. So if that's something you're interested in, subscribe to this channel so that you don't miss a single video. Give us video a thumbs up so that we can reach even more people and hit that notification bell because you don't want to miss our content coming out every single week. And another resource that we have is our Moving to Mexico Guide absolutely free. You can just go to entrepreneur expat.com/mexico to download that guide. If you want to learn a little bit more and join our email community. And if you're ready to take things to the next level and you want our support actually relocating to Mexico or elsewhere in Latin America, just go to entrepreneur expat.com/consult and we can help you there. So as you could imagine, since the election and beyond, Google searches for things like move to Canada have been spiking and even refugee claims by Americans are now up. Uh, but right now we're gonna talk about a smarter play potentially, especially for builders, which is Latin America. If you're looking to really build businesses, if you're looking to build connections, if you're looking to have a better lifestyle than you could in the us. Free from a lot of the chaos and drama that the United States has. Uh, Mexico and Latin America in general is a very good place. Now, of course, this is not legal or tax advice. We are just sharing our opinions here. As always, consult with your attorney. Consult with professionals like the ones that we connect you with, in our different consults. So make sure you book that consult if you are interested in digging deeper into the finances and legality and all of that. So according to Americans. Canada is sort of like that obvious North star in terms of like, Hey, we, we want to leave for greener pastures. But if you actually value speed, if you value lower overhead, and if you also value proximity to US time zones, Mexico and Latin America tend to win a lot on the friction, the cost, and the speed. So let's talk about a few of those things. Uh, number one. Canada, they, there used to be a lot more immigration pathways to Canada than there are now. They've been, uh, definitely limiting their immigration recently, especially from the us You, you typically need to, if you're gonna immigrate there long term, you've gotta have a job, you've gotta have a large business, you've gotta be able to sponsor yourself. Versus in Mexico you can get a visa in as little as 90 days just by proving income or savings. Specifically, if you've got around$4,200 per month USD as of 2025, uh, then you can qualify to get a Mexican residence permit as long as that income is verifiably remote. So it's not like a job that you have to be there. You actually have to have a letter from your employer stating that you can work remotely from Mexico or a location, independent business, or something of that nature. Uh, now of course, lower overhead. Uh, life here is a lot cheaper in Mexico than in the United States. We save, depending on the city that we're living in, at any given time, anywhere between 20 up to 60 or 70% In terms of our monthly overhead It's very comfortable. For a couple or a small family to live for under two or$3,000 per month in Mexico and live fairly well. Uh, of course you're also close to US time zones now, uh, Canada obviously has this as a similar feature, but if you're going to somewhere like, uh, Southeast Asia as an expat or even Europe or the Middle East, you'd have to tend to deal with time zone issues and things like that. But Mexico and Latin America are of course positioned in a way where time zone is not really an issue. Now I wanna talk about one of my favorite topics, which is this. This idea of soft freedoms. Soft freedoms have to do with how easy life actually feels to operate, having fewer of those tiny rules that kind of slow you down. And the reality in Canada is that a lot of this administrative burden, uh, stacks up. You've got things like GST and HST, registration for taxes. Once you cross$30,000 a year in, uh, taxable supplies, you've got payroll remittances, you've got slips, you've got a lot of, uh, a lot of drag for freelancers and small businesses, uh, to do business there. Versus in Mexico, you can have a small business up and running at as little as 15 to 30 days, and we have. Friends that have done it. Of course there are things you have to do like set up your, your FACTA and your tax invoicing systems and things like that, but it's a lot more predictable. It works and it's much quicker to start a business here. Uh, in addition, when you look at sort of the day-to-day, you just don't have the government surveilling you, you don't have the government breathing down your throat. You don't have a lot of the lockdowns and all of the. The, uh, withdrawal of freedoms that you do in places like the US and Canada and Mexico is very neutral. Like they're not involving themselves in any wars, uh, around the world like the US does. And like Canada is kind of second handedly involved in as well. So there are a lot more neutral. You have a lot more soft freedom. The day-to-day quality of life is, is a lot better. Uh, by the way, it's a lot warmer too. You know, talking about those, those sorts of little things and quality of life. Um, the, the day-to-day experiences, the, the weather is significantly better as well. Um, so here, like where we live in the lake chip area, it's in the, the seventies pretty much all year round, sometimes up until the, into the eighties, but it's like pretty much perfect weather just about year round. So. You don't have to worry about being too cold to leave. Things are also a lot closer together in Mexico. So unless you live in the downtown of a major city in Canada, which comes with all sorts of issues with, uh, crime and, and so many other things, you're not really gonna able to walk to things similar to the us. Uh, cities and towns and suburbs are like kind of spread out, so you have to be in your car to get absolutely anywhere versus in Mexico. You tend to have things much more closer together. Now let's talk about taxes. Canada's marginal tax rate hits around 53.5% in the big provinces. There's also capital gains taxes in Canada that they are now planning to hike in January of 2026. They're just getting worse and worse. These taxes are going up every single year in Mexico. If you're not a tax resident, as in, if you don't live there more than 183 days per year, and your center of vital interest isn't in Mexico, you don't have to pay taxes at all on your worldwide income. Now the letter of the law says that if you're there longer, you have to pay taxes on the money that you make from overseas. But the reality on the on the ground here is that most expats, if they're making money, let's say from a US employer or a US business of theirs, they're typically just declaring and paying taxes in the US and they're not really being asked to pay taxes in Mexico. So your tax rate is significantly lower versus if you go from. The US to Canada, you might be paying, if you're making a hundred thousand dollars, you might be paying three, five,$6,000 or more every single year in extra taxes to Canada because of the increased marginal tax rates there. As I mentioned earlier, residencies is a lot easier. It's also a lot cheaper. You don't need to spend as much money on attorneys. There's a lot more affordable legal services and things like that here in Mexico. If you are interested in learning more about that and you are interested in maybe taking a look at what, what it would look like to become an expat in Mexico, you can go to entrepreneur expat.com/console and my team can discuss your individual situation, your unique situation with you to help you figure out, uh, the best way to do it. And, um, like I mentioned before, the big thing is really lifestyle. Uh, the lifestyle here is so much better. It's more relaxed, it's nicer. There's a ton of beautiful beaches everywhere. Another thing that I really like is that it's a great springboard into the Spanish speaking market across the Americas, so you can access 600 million or more. Spanish speaking people around all of Latin America. It's a great home base. There's a lot of really cool business opportunities. And now of course there are different trade offs. Of course, you need to, uh, set up your, your ura. There are certain, bureaucratic red tape that maybe will take a little bit longer to handle in terms of getting your things set up in Mexico. But. Obviously it, it is cheaper overall. You're saving on cost of living, you're probably gonna save a lot on taxes as well. You're gonna have a better lifestyle. So overall, we really, really love Mexico. My wife and I have been living here for over three years, and we like it a lot and we here every day that Canada is getting more and more totalitarian. It's getting more and more expensive. The crime rates are going up and exactly the opposite is true. On all of those counts, uh, here in Mexico and in a lot of places in Latin America.
