Here is a glance into this episode:

[2:31] Two fundamentals guide my approach to racial equity.

1- The first fundamental is adopting racial equity as a practice is everyone’s job. That means whatever a person’s role is in an organization, there are actions that they can take to help the organization be more equitable, no matter what they do.

2- The second fundamental that guides my work with clients is that racially equitable practices should cut across an organization’s work, both internally and externally. So, in other words, to be the most effective, equitable practices should be utilized in different parts of the organization, whether in internally facing operations, accounting, and payroll, or to your externally facing communications policy or outreach work, or if you do direct service, that experience with clients one to one.

[4:54] What happens when an organization lacks a shared why. Lacking a shared sense of why racial equity as a practice matters can be a stumbling block for staff because 1) they’re not sure what’s expected of them, and 2) they’re not sure why it matters in the organization’s work

[9:25] Three action steps that check the pulse of your “Equity Why.” These are three ways to move forward if you believe your organization lacks a shared why.

1- Pause. Stop what you’re doing and check in to be sure that the work that’s happening in your organization is anchored in a shared way.

2- Get clear on the why. Make sure that whatever actions or activities are happening that they feed up into one strategic vision for equity in the organization, for equity internally and externally.

3- Work with others to create the shared why.

There can be many reasons  an organization doesn’t move forward in its equity journey. But when I see an organization spin, meaning they’re not moving forward, they’re having the same conversations; as I said earlier, the one thing I always look for is whether or not there’s a strong “Equity Why.”
