And I really just wanted to encourage men of how to take that step from just walking, okay, I'm a Christian, I'm doing this, to really being the man that God has fully called you to be.

I it to me, when we were coming up with this topic and we were coming up with the series for a better man, a better woman, it thought uh the thought that came to me was there are a lot of guys out there who are okay with just being okay. You know, they're they're doing bare minimum and they're like, I'm I'm at least I'm doing it. Right, you know, and they walk away with that and they go into their marriages just assuming like at least I'm doing it, at least I'm going to work, at least I they're doing bare minimum stuff

I like this because we're not talking about spiritually aligned, right? We're talking about spiritually awake. Can you help us break down the difference?

So, what would spiritually sleeping be, right? Spiritually sleeping is just going through the motions, it's just on autopilot, it's just reading half a devotional, it's just praying the how do they describe it as like an archer prayers.

What is that?

You never heard of that? Archer prayer. Yeah, an archer prayer. Like a Hail Mary prayer, similar but different. An archer prayer is when you're just not stopping to really plan your time to connect with God, but you're just shooting up arrows of needs all day.

From Archer Prayers To Deep Connection

And while those are prayers, right, they they still pray, still connect with God, they are not that heartfelt, deep taking time out of your schedule to stop and connect and walk with God.

Really getting to know God.

Right. And it perfectly leads me to my first point. Perfect. Great transition is that a spiritually awake man walks with God, like Adam in the garden, like David when he was on the run. You are just so connected to God that your your reading feels like conversation with God. Your prayer time feels like like God is is your your shrink, your psychologist right there on the couch with you. And you are so connected.

Go ahead.

My question is for guys who are reading their word, and for guys who are trying to, they're making an effort to try to connect and and walk in the garden, as you mentioned. How can they actually experience God to make it personal? How can they have an encounter with God so that the relationship does become intimate and not just this is who I think I'm talking to, and I think he's talking to me, and I think I think we're there, but I don't really know for sure.

How To Encounter God Personally

So I would just seriously, I would lock myself in a space. Okay, and in my prayer closet and not come out till I feel that connection, till I know that I know that I know that God has connected with me.

What would you do in there?

Kyle Almodovar 5:30

And so I would have whatever I needed for that ambiance, whether it's music, whether it's the right lights or candles or whatever you need, and would and three versions of the Bible, whatever you need to set that stage to where your heart is ready to receive all of God, right? So that your there's no distractions. You know, for me, the phone is away, it's out of the space, and the the lights are low. It's probably early morning for me. So this is all about ambiance and environment. It's about clearing your mind and clearing the space of distractions, right? Not just ambiance, but clearing the space for it just to be pure of you and God. And you know, we've talked about before where a lot of times for me it's going on a walk.

It's walking walking my dog through the woods on the path or whatever it is, just being one with the nature and other creations of God.

Kyle Almodovar 6:27

It's that that abide in me and I'll abide in you verse. I think it's in John. And it's just that abiding in him of of the day-to-day and finding that that time to chisel it out and just I want to say feel, but it's deeper than feel. It's it's connecting with him so that your your body, your spirit is moving in the direction that God has called you to.

I am not a man, but I think this applies for everyone because once you have that encounter, yeah, I think that is what helps awaken you. And of course, you can't always, you know, if you're in the middle of a tough season or a tough day, you can't be like, where are my candles? Where's my music? Like, I can't, you know, I can't create this way, or I can't go outside. It's in winter and snow, and it's just way too cold for me to just stand out there for however long it takes. So I think once you have the encounter and you start to build that spiritual muscle up and you start to understand, like, this is what it feels like to have the encounter with God. This is what it feels like

Abiding Daily And Building The Muscle

to know with confidence that I am one with God, that I am speaking to God, that I'm close to God, that I can hear him. Right. I can hear what he's saying. Then that muscle can then be flexed anytime and every time. Yes. And then I I mean, it's it's really hard for me to understand how you would still be asleep while still having encounters with God. It's like you can't it it doesn't work.

Sin gets in the way, anxiety gets in the way. This is this is great. Leads me to my second point. A spiritually awake man understands God's will and God's calling in his life.

A spiritually awake man is not just running on autopilot, taking whatever comes at him and dealing with it. A spiritually awake man is is walking with purpose. He's walking after what God has called him to. Yes, he's not just showing up there on accident with intentional about the calling because he spent so much time connecting with God to understand what God's will and God's calling is over his life. That's great.

The most attractive thing for a in a Christian marriage, the most attractive thing that a man can do is become a spiritual leader in the house and to continuously go and seek God and his leadership because the more he spends time with God, the more we know as women that God is pouring into him. And because we trust God so much and the husband trusts God so much, it just it creates this intimacy that you really can't get anywhere else. And so for you to say that it's very encouraging, and it it not only just applies to your faith in your life, right, but it's the overflow of it is truly gonna come down into the marriage and and upon your wife.

And for me, it started obviously I got saved pretty radically, and then immediately God was sh was calling me to understand his will and to understand what he had for my life.

Yes. Yes. So my life wasn't going the way I wanted it to. Of course I had a radically encounter, right?

Right. So I'm was in the wilderness with overdrinking and substance abuse and just

Spiritual Leadership Is Attractive

Kyle Almodovar 11:20

lost. And I had a lot of Chris good Christian men who just kept pouring into me and speaking life into my situation and asking me good spiritual questions to get me to think deeper and think more outside of myself and outside of the next day, which is how I was living, was one day at a time, like let's just get through today. And it really stirred in me to like question like, what does God put me here for? Right? Like their their evangelism to me led me to a place where I'm questioning what has God put me here for. And then in one of these drunken nights, God opened the door to me and spoke to me clearly and said, How did you know it was in? It just was unmistakable, okay, unmistakable of just the God pulling on my heart, asking me, Is this what you want for your life? Is this how you want your life to turn out? You will never be the man that I've called you to be, that I have for you to be, living this way. And I woke up the next morning and changed. Wow and threw it all away, and I've been sober and straight and on the straight and arrow ever since.

After that one encounter and after you became spiritually awake, so we just kind of mentioned like, okay, once you get that, once you feel that it's really hard to go backwards, yeah. So was it hard to, you know, what was it hard for you to just cut cold turkey, all your your habits and your the your way of life, or was it easy because you were now spiritually awake?

Kyle Almodovar 12:52

It was easy to it was easy to step on the path and follow God in that I knew he wanted sobriety for me. I knew he wanted absolute sobriety for me, and that that decision was easy because I was so I hated myself. I hated how messy I was, I hated how gross it was, right? Yeah, like I just felt disgust. Yeah, a af afterwards, right? In the moment it was fun, I was loving my life, and but afterwards I felt like man, that dude was gross. Oh that old Kyle was just not not how God had planned for me, not how how you know second grade Kyle planned his life out. Yeah right, and so I had to get away from that and I'm thinking back at the second grade, I had to 90s

Kyle’s Radical Turn And Sobriety

mull it, like not like deep, but it was great. What made it easy was kind of my next point of being a spiritually awake man. A spiritually awake man has good, good community around him. What does good mean?

Selina Almodovar 14:02

A good community around him.

Kyle Almodovar 14:03

Right. So I got saved radically, like I just described, and that next week I went with my mom. God bless her, God rest her soul, my sweet mom. I said, Mom, will you go to church with me? I found a church I want to go to. And she said, Yeah. And so we went and I walk into it's at a Masonic temple, and it's just like it was the closest non-denominational church to my house. I went non-denominational because those were the kind of men who were speaking into my life. Yeah. Right.

Selina Almodovar 14:28

And so I went and I So you went because of the proximity of location.

Kyle Almodovar 14:34

It was the closest.

Selina Almodovar 14:35

Not because, you know, those people who were speaking into you, you could have gone to their church.

Kyle Almodovar 14:40

Interesting. Yeah, I never thought about that. Okay. They uh Okay. I did visit most of their churches.

Selina Almodovar 14:46

Okay.

But it after I got this is just easy. This was what I knew I could commit to. Yes. I knew because they were one was in like 35, 45 minutes of time.

Selina Almodovar 14:57

You weren't overthinking the process, you weren't second guessing, you were just like, I have to go now. What's the easiest route to get there? I'm there.

Kyle Almodovar 15:06

What is something I know I can maintain? Yeah, is what I went. What is where is somewhere I know that I know that I know that I can make? We live in Cleveland, Ohio. It snows eight, twelve inches sometimes, and I knew that if it was too far away, those kind of things would get in the way.

Selina Almodovar 15:20

But this can also apply to a man who's like, I want to read my Bible. What do I know that I know that I know that I can make?

Kyle Almodovar 15:27

Right.

Selina Almodovar 15:27

What can I commit to? You know, I want to go to a small group. What do I know that I know that I know that I can commit to? You know, I want to pray. What do I know that I you know it's it applies in all of the aspects.

Amen. That's so good. So I get into the church and I walk in and I see it's a super our church, praise the Lord, our church is super diverse.

But deeper than that is that I was humble enough to know that I didn't have it all together and I couldn't figure it out on my own. There you go. Spiritually awake man is humble enough that part to know that he's can't make it on his own, that he can't figure it out by himself, that he's not an island, right? Yes, a spiritually awake man is out there connecting with other Christians to grow in his walk, to grow in his understanding of himself and of God. Because you know, people outside of you can see things so much different than you, can help you, yeah, can keep you accountable, yeah, and can can walk together so that you guys are both building each other up.

Okay, we just talked about all these ways that help or that help us know what a spiritually awake man should and can do, right? You know, but for the people who are not awake, for the people who have not had the encounter with God, for the people whose fire is just an ember, you know, barely barely aflame.

How do we get them to want the encounter? You know, like how where where's the bridge that connects the two from being, you know, dead or asleep to I'm on fire for God and I'm gonna take action to maintain that fire. Because there are some guys who were on fire, you know, and and I especially when you're dating and you're you're newlywed, you know, a lot of guys and girls like they're on fire for God, and they're so happy that you know God brought them together, but then you know, years happen and things happen and kids happen and tragedy happens, and that fire, that flame just kind of dies down. And if they're not having the encounter with God, you know, how can they what can they do to become spiritually awake?

It would be so easy to just say, You gotta want it, right? Oh, you gotta want it. Exactly. You gotta just jump in and want it.

Exactly. There's some people that want it, but they can't get it, or there's some people that don't want it. Like, what do we do with this?

So If you want it and feel like you're not there. Some are afraid to want it because then they're afraid to change. Hey, we're gonna have to face that fear.

Reset By Cutting Distractions

Tear it down. Tear down what you used to have, the way you used to operate and reset and restart. What do I mean when I say tear it down? Cut out everything. Cut out every distraction that's not the word. Seriously. Every distraction that's not the word, cut it out.

And get into a routine of where you're going to connect with God nonstop. Nonstop. With I'm going to listen to sermons. I listened to sermons day in and day out that first year. That was all I listened to. I I there was like right. This is gonna date me, but I don't care. It was like right at the the evolution of smartphones, right? Yes. We just I had like a I think it was an iPhone 3.

You had an iPhone, yeah.

Kyle Almodovar 20:57

iPhone 3 and podcasts and apps and sermons were just right there all the time. It was like the beginning of this, right? So I had just gotten saved, just got my first smartphone, and I just dove in nonstop. Bible app on my phone. I'm probably like U version user number 003. Seriously, because I was just in it from then. Yeah from day one, and I just committed to that, and that was all I did. And it sounds, I don't care how it sounds, it's what it took for me to connect with God and to today to carry it through to today, where I don't, I don't need all the fluff. I can in zero seconds feel like I'm connected with God. My no matter how bad it gets, no matter even when we were in our deepest, darkest of our marriage, uh, I never doubted my connection with God, never doubted that Holy Spirit being in me because I know that I know that I'm spiritually awake through these moments, because I invested so much time in my connection with God when I was just a little baby Christian.

Right. It's it's eight-pack abs of connection with God. See, like this muscle is so praise the Lord. Like I

Confidence Through Humility Before God

Kyle Almodovar 22:10

just pray that that connection stays there. I'm not saying this out of pride, but I'm just saying that it came. I'm at this point in understanding my calling and understanding where God has me to be, wants me to be, because I spent so much time investing and understanding Him and where I was when I was at my weakest. Like I'm trying to avoid all the prideful ways of not saying that like nothing can ever come between me and God.

But nothing can ever come between me and God. Got it. And I don't want to have a Job experience, but I nothing can come between me and God.

Where we felt like a lot was taken from us in one season. We've we've had a couple of those. But I I think what you're saying, what I'm hearing is, you know, you're you're giving us gems, all right, but for guys or keys or their secrets. You have to think about it like this: like you guys want to be a leader, you guys want to be strong and brave and courageous, you want to be this tough guy, you want to be the provider, you want to be the warrior of the house, you want to be the protector of the house. And how much easier would that be if you are connected with God, who is all of those things and more, who is the warrior, who is the protector, who is the provider, who is the. If you're connected with the the, then it makes it so much easier for your job because you just gotta copy and repeat.

Kyle Almodovar 23:27

Right.

Selina Almodovar 23:27

You know, and for you to not have the the in the front of you, then you're just trying to pull off in your own strength, and you're just trying to pull off in your own educ in your own wisdom, right? And you're trying to pull off in your own experience, and then that is where pride comes in because then you think that you got it all together when really you don't even know anything. You know, that's like my four-year-old telling me what to do, and it's just like okay, you know, like you sound cute, you sound cute as a guy, you know, and it's the secret is when you are spiritually awake and when you are flexing your muscle and you do develop the eight-pack abs, then it makes your job as a man become so much easier. Yeah, it makes it become so much better.

Absolutely. And it doesn't happen overnight. Sure, it takes patience. You said all these characteristics

Share The Vision With Your Family

Kyle Almodovar 24:20

about being a leader and being uh provider and protector of the home. And it it's all in those opposites, right? I'm a leader because I'm a follower of God, I'm a protector because I'm a a servant of God, right? And I'm confident because I know I'm humble in front of God to go where He is sent me. That's good, not to go where I'm not called, right? Like I'm not just moving and guessing where I'm going. I'm going on this path because that's where God has put me, and it and the confidence is only in my humility to bow down before God and let that be what moves me.

I even think sometimes you don't understand. Sometimes I don't. No, you're right.

Sometimes I don't because our faiths are different, and what what looks like something to me is completely different to you.

Kyle Almodovar 25:34

Yes, and and and I I don't know if I totally understood it until going into this deep dive in preparing for this, in that my hookup with God is so firm, it's so strong, right? Like you think I'm trying not to offend you. You think that you have to go and wait and hear, and I feel like each moment, each time I pray, I hear. Each time I walk, I hear. And it's it's hard for me when I am like have to like try to hear. Because if I have to try to hear, then I worry that my flesh is gonna get in the way. Right. But because of the because of this history I talked about in this episode, like that connection is just there, right? Like, it's just there. And and and it feels it's so ingrained, it's so wrapped around my heart. It's so God is just so a part of everything that I've done that I I would not be moving unless I felt him here, right? And so I I don't need to as a wife.

Go ahead, I will say it's not that I don't think you don't hear from God. Yeah, I know you do, because your character and your actions and the way you live and the way you serve and the way you sacrifice, you know, and we'll talk about this in other episodes. Yeah,

Practical Season Of Spiritual Focus

Selina Almodovar 27:00

but it's all there. The evidence that you talk to God is there, the fruit is there. It's the fact that you talk to God, but then you don't share with your spouse what God is sharing with you. And I get it. Sometimes what God tells the husband is meant for the husband, you know, because he goes above, you know, he's on top. And and there are some things, there are some directions, there are some corrections that God will share with the husband that he won't necessarily share with the wife, you know, and it's just kind of that order, and you just have to be respectful and you have to trust in that order. But when you do have these moments with God and he is sharing with you, to share that with your spouse, I think helps your spouse realize that you're having moments with God. When you don't say anything, yeah, when you don't say anything, it you can't help, but it it's it's almost natural for someone else to be like, is it happening? Because you're not saying anything. So how would we know? How would we know unless I'm like really analyzing and observing your actions? You want you're communicating through your actions, you're communicating with your actions, but sometimes having a conversation and just being like, Oh, I've spent time with the Lord and this is what he said, you know, or hey, we're praying together and I really felt God was saying this. You know, if you just communicate like God is speaking, then we wouldn't wonder if God's speaking.

like I said, women desire spiritual intimacy. Yeah. And if you're being intimate with God and not inviting your wife into that, there's the disconnect.

So you have to communicate. Like, I'm being intimate with the father, and I am spiritually awake, and I I want to bring you along on that.

I'm thinking through the the challenges to that, and I think that's where we have to work together to be spiritually aligned and as the man and wife to maintain that spiritual alignment. Right. And so I would add this again. A spiritually awake man is spiritually aligned with his wife.

And I think that's that goes a long way. And I go back to, praise the Lord. I go back to when we first got married, right? And that we had the awesome little prayer room in our attic.

And we had the the prayer room all set up, and we would go up there every day. It was probably like the first three, five months, and every day we would spend time in prayer and in worship and read our Bible together and just devote that time to God. And that is the spiritual connection of our marriage that has never gone away. That cannot be erased, that cannot be undone,

that is similar to that first year of my spiritual walk where I was just engulfed in God.

And we did that to our marriage. And it's just beautiful that that and that spiritual connection, while it's been tried and tested and stretched throughout the years, has never been severed. Yeah. And I encourage couples to do that as much as possible when you first get in a relationship, or if you're resetting. Yes. If you just went through the relationship renovation and you want to figure out how to spiritually reset, go into a season of of just spiritual connection with each other. Right? I talked about how I did it as a man. Do it as a man and wife. Yeah. Where that's just all you do. You you're not watching shows, you're not Netflixing, you're watching sermons. You're listening to to hey, to Kyle and Selena. Yeah. Go through. We got three seasons of content for you guys. And there are great spiritual takeaways in all of them. And and that's that's God is so good. I I just I'm sorry, I just trailed that sentence off, but I just am over I'm engulfed right now in how good God has been to us over the years.

Men, we hope you enjoyed it and you got some some gems, some secrets out of it. I think uh the resource, as you were talking, the resource that we're gonna provide for you guys and the couple's playbook for this will be called Um How to Be a Better Man. And you, I don't know if you realize this, but the entire episode, you were just shouting out these affirmations, just like a better man does this, a better man does this, a better man does that. You must have said at least 10 of them, you know. And I've obviously when I go into production, I'll hear all of them, I'll jot them down. But I think as we go through the series, by the time we're done with this series, we're gonna have a pretty good list of what a better man is and what he does. And so I think what our resource will be is these affirmations so that you guys will have them and then you can share them or you can post them or you can, you know, have them on your phone, and and that way you are rewiring your brain and your psyche to know that this is what I am. Yeah, this is what I do because I am a better man. Amen. You know, that's right. Yes, we want you to become better men, but at some point there's gonna be a a time where you are a better man, that's right. And you are because you're the fruit is showing and you're doing these things that these affirmations that you you mentioned. So I think that'll be our resource that we'll um I will work on all month long, and you guys will be able to have it at the end of the series. So stay tuned for that.
