How to Make Your OWN Manuscript Bible Study

Most people study the Bible one way for their entire Christian lives, and wonder why it gets boring. But you can liven up your engagement with God in His word by trying this new method that host Paul Renfroe is about to show you. A Manuscript Bible Study is so named because one book of the Bible is formatted exactly like the ancient manuscripts: no paragraphs, no headings, no chapters or verses. And that is something you can do if you know how to copy and paste—it’s that simple!

The virtue of this is forcing you to make your own nuts-and-bolts observations of the Bible book under consideration. Once you observe the frequently-used words, the natural thought units, and how the entire book flows rationally, suddenly the accurate interpretations and universal applications are easy to find.

Hello, it's your buddy Paul, about how to make your own manuscript studies, and broaden the way you engage with the word of God. excited and anticipating great new insights into God's word.

First, you go to bible gateway.com. Once you are at biblegateway.com, you pick the translation you want with this dropdown menu, and then in the search bar, you type in the passage you want to go to. 

Then after the scripture loads, you go to this little settings icon, and when you click on it, you see page options. So you can take in the verse numbers and or leave 'em out, cross references. take out the chapter headings, which are not part of the Bible.

They're added by translators.

Then when you have the page the way you want it to look, in terms of the page options, you simply use your copy and paste function on your computer and you copy a portion that you want to work with. So in creating a manuscript like we're using, I simply copied the entire chapter.

And then the last step is you paste it into a new document, and at that point you begin to take out the paragraphs. That's just a function of our language and modern composition. Remember, the paragraphs are added by translators. The original text of the New Testament, and the entire Bible has no paragraphs. 

And of course the original didn't have verse numbers and chapters either. Those were not added until the 1300's. once you have got that, then you can add a footer to your page, so you have a page number, and then you're off to the races. The next thing to do The next thing to do is to make up your codes, once you identify frequently used words.

Now as you interact with the manuscript pages and the scripture, without all the paragraphs and headings, you begin to see those frequently used words. You start marking 'em, and then the next thing you know is you start to see the thought units. Well, that's what a paragraph is. So you can make marks for your own paragraphs, and then you can lay out the pages side by side so that you have all the pages on your dining room table.

And you can tape 'em together and draw a big line across the entire thing and get the big picture. And you can say, well, this over here on page three relates very heavily to this over here on page nine. And that's the really great value of this kind of study is  getting the big picture.

This, our purpose as a reminder to engage with God's word. And when you use a different form like this, it really can be helpful to get you outta your rut.

many of us have been studying the scripture the same way our entire Christian life. And so when we get out of our rut, then we get the big overview of the scripture that we're dealing with.
