If you could take a straw poll about how many musicians are aware about injury prevention on their instrument, what numbers do you think you would get?
In this FIRST Research and Development episode of Trust the Process, I share a 2015 study that was conducted by three musician health researchers in Australia: Dr Bronwen Ackerman, Dr Dale Rickert, and Dr Margaret Barrett.
It is entitled “Are music students fit to play? A case study of health awareness and injury attitudes amongst tertiary student cellists”
They interviewed a group of collegiate cello students in Australia to try and figure out what the perceptions of musician injury and injury prevention are.
The impetus for this study was that they saw that medical research in this field has drastically increased over the last 30 years, the number of injuries in musicians, and the prevention practice implementation hasn’t.
