In this episode of With Love, Jenny, I continue my deeply personal conversation with my daughter-in-law, Heather, as she courageously shares her journey through addiction and recovery. Her honesty and wisdom shed light on what it’s really like to walk both sides of that path — from active addiction to the daily work of sobriety.
We talk about the messy truth of healing — how recovery isn’t just about getting clean, but learning to live with integrity, rebuild trust, and rediscover self-worth. Heather opens up about what helped her most, what didn’t, and how love, boundaries, and community played a powerful role in her recovery.
If you or someone you love is struggling with addiction, I hope this episode brings hope, compassion, and a reminder that recovery is possible — one day, one choice, one act of love at a time.

In this episode, I sit down with my daughter-in-law Heather, who bravely shares her raw and honest story of addiction, recovery, and rebuilding her life. This conversation is deeply personal for me, not only because of my own family’s journey through addiction, but also because it sheds light on the often-misunderstood realities of what it feels like to live inside addiction.
Heather opens up about her earliest struggles, the weight of shame and guilt, the way addiction tore apart family bonds, and the turning point that helped her begin a path toward healing. She doesn’t just share her story—she offers hope, resilience, and a reminder that recovery is possible no matter how far gone things may seem.
My hope is that by listening, you’ll gain compassion, understanding, and encouragement for your own journey—or for someone you love who may be struggling. Addiction impacts families on every level, but there is always hope for healing.
If you find yourself walking this hard road and need someone to talk to, I’d love to hear from you. Please reach out—I’m here to help.

When addiction entered my family, I never imagined the twists, heartbreaks, and small miracles that would unfold. In this episode, I share my personal journey as a mom walking alongside my son through his battle with opioid addiction. From the terrifying nights of detox to the hope found in treatment programs and even incarceration, this story is one of resilience, faith, and love that refuses to give up.
I talk about the importance of getting on the same page as parents, the hidden costs of addiction, and why your own healing matters as much as your child’s. This is not just their fight—it’s yours, too. I also share how faith and community played an unexpected role in carrying us through the darkest moments.
If you are a parent or loved one of someone struggling with addiction, my story is for you. I want you to know that you are not alone, and that there is hope even in the most painful chapters. Please don’t hesitate to reach out—I’m here to listen, to support, and to walk with you.
Don’t forget to grab the meditation link below that supports you if you are going through the journey of loving someone who loves drugs more than themselves.
I would love to support you as a coach. If you’re here, it’s because you know someone or you yourself are going through this horrific experience. You’re not alone. And there is help – even if you have to be persistent to find what fits best for you.

Addiction often doesn’t just cost lives — it can cost freedom, too. Every year, Americans spend roughly $10 billion incarcerating people for drug offenses. Imagine half a million lives behind bars, each costing taxpayers over $20,000 a year. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Across the entire prison system, the U.S. spends more than $80 billion annually on corrections — money that could provide treatment, not just punishment.
But on a more personal level, I walk you through one of the hardest things life has presented to me … my son’s addiction. My goal is to educate you… to help you… to open your eyes to see what is possible and what is happening if your child is using opioids or other substances.
In this, and the next episode, I address key points for everyone who knows someone who is suffering from addiction:
Don’t forget to grab the meditation link below that supports you if you are going through the journey of loving someone who loves drugs more than themselves.

A raw, heart-opening look at the unseen anguish that drives someone to leave this world — and how spiritual understanding can help us begin to heal.
This episode is part of my own healing journey. It is one of the hardest things I have experienced so far in my lifetime. Although it happened almost 30 years ago, time hasn’t fully healed, but it showed so much grace.
In all, I hope this episode teaches us the importance of kindness in word and deed. The simplest teasing or joking could be a fatal blow to someone trying to hold on. It isn’t always the harsh bullying. And sometimes it’s our lack of attentiveness and presence. And sometimes it’s none of the above.
And as always, if anything in this episode triggers you, please get professional help.

This show addresses the topic of Pregnancy Loss… no matter how recent or long ago it was, there’s probably a part of you stuck in that memory. It is so important to process grief no matter how it shows up. In this case, through pregnancy loss. In this episode, I share my experience with a pregnancy that wasn’t viable. But there are many other ways to lose a baby.
According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, as many as 10 to 20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, and that number may be even higher when including early losses that happen before someone even knows they’re pregnant. 1 in 100 pregnancies is ectopic - a dangerous and nonviable condition. Stillbirths, which occur after 20 weeks of gestation, affect about 1 in 160 pregnancies in the U.S.
These numbers don’t just represent data — they represent women, families, hearts broken quietly behind closed doors.
And how we each process that loss can look incredibly different.

This show addresses the topic of divorce. If you’re not quite sure yet, or if you’re in the middle of it, or if it's years if not decades behind you, there’s always an invitation to heal.
As of 2024, divorce statistics in the United States reveal some sobering insights:
Primary Causes of Divorce:
No matter what the story is around a divorce, everyone involved has an opportunity to heal. Society often encourages us to take sides, hold onto resentments, feel victimized while broken. It can be extremely vulnerable. It’s so important, when you are ready (and as soon as possible) to revisit the story. Take responsibility for how you got there, and then let go of everything that you don’t want to carry forward.
Where ever you are in your post divorce era... let me just say this:

In this episode, I’m thrilled to welcome two highly accomplished women who are proving that the best chapters of life can happen at any age! Marla Letizia and Dr. Jean Bokelmann are in what they call their Long Life Era — a time when many slow down, but they’re ramping up! Together, they’ve created something truly special: a groundbreaking way to enhance health and longevity through food.
In Episode 32, Marla introduced us to the Long Life Era mindset, so be sure to check that out (trust me, you’re never too young or too old to benefit from it!). Today, she’s back with Jean, a longtime friend and expert in medicinal herbs. Though they met in 7th grade, they ran in different circles — until a brief but powerful conversation at their 50th high school reunion sparked an idea that brought their brilliance together.
Marla’s love for cooking beautifully nourishing meals, paired with Jean’s expertise in medicinal herbs, led to an incredible new product unlike anything on the market. In our conversation, we dive into the importance of food choices, the challenges they faced in bringing this project to life, and the mindset that keeps them both contributing, innovating, and refusing to slow down. In fact, Marla believes she’ll create her best project yet at 90! What will you be doing at 90?
Most exciting of all — their upcoming Long Life Era Cookbook! Not only will it feature delicious recipes, but it will also highlight the health benefits of each ingredient and even help you choose foods based on what your body needs. Need more iron? There’s a recipe for that! This cookbook is set to release at the end of the year — just in time for holiday gift-giving, and I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy!
If you’d like to join the Long Life Era movement and be part of this inspiring community:
This conversation was truly a delight — Marla and Jean’s passion, knowledge, and energy left me feeling inspired and nourished. I can’t wait to have them back on With Love, Jenny!

In this episode, our guest Marla Letizia sparks a vibrant conversation about aging and living our BEST life — no matter how old we are. We dive into what happens at different stages of life, and don’t worry, young listeners — this one’s for you, too!
How old would you be if you didn’t know your age?
That question framed our discussion on how to feel your absolute best, regardless of the number!
And here’s another thought-provoking question: How old do you think you’ll be when you die?
Did you know that 85% of people who answer that question for life insurance actually die at the age they predicted? Why do you think that is? And more importantly, do you want to change it?
We’re living longer than ever, and Marla believes the first person to live to 120 is already here. Could it be you? What does it take to live with that kind of longevity?
Imagine retiring at 65 and having another 30 years to pursue a brand-new career or passion. That’s an incredible window of time for new possibilities, new achievements, and fresh adventures. The question is — what will you do with it? How’s your health, and is it set up to support an active, fulfilling lifestyle for the next three decades?
Society starts aging us as soon as we hit 50. The AARP card shows up in the mail, followed by Medicare, and suddenly we’re labeled as “senior.” But we’re living in the longest phase of our lives, so let’s redefine what aging means! It all starts with mindset. Marla shares that she doesn’t yet know what her next big move will be, but she’s certain that when she turns 90, she’ll be starting a new business or venture!
Let’s embrace this journey together and thrive at any age — it all begins right now, no matter what stage of life you’re in.
If you’d like to join Marla’s community (open to all ages), you can find her at the Long Life Era Community on Facebook.
And be sure to download the Long Life Era Pledge!

The Dash
by Linda Ellis
I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on the tombstone
from the beginning…to the end.
He noted that first came the date of birth
and spoke the following date with tears,
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time
that they spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved them
know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own,
the cars…the house…the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash.
So, think about this long and hard.
Are there things you’d like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
that can still be rearranged.
If we could just sl

In this episode, we dive into the hidden layers of our triggers and how they’re often a reflection of our own healing journey — not the person who triggered us.
Trauma bonds are more common than we think. We tend to connect with people who share similar experiences, not only because we relate, but because we unconsciously form unspoken agreements to protect our shared wounds. At first, these bonds feel strong, but as the relationship deepens, the person we once saw as our perfect match (and still may) inevitably triggers the hidden landmine of our trauma, and chaos ensues.
My coach once told me, “When someone hurts or frustrates you, write them a thank-you note and do your work.” At the time, it stung! But her wisdom was undeniable: it’s not about the other person — it’s about what’s happening inside of you. Triggers are invitations to heal. The more we heal, the fewer triggers we experience.
Kristin and I explore the patterns of triggers and trauma, and how they can spark transformative healing when we recognize our role in the cycle. We also discuss the ways we cope with (and often hide) our trauma: avoidance, procrastination, anxiety, depression, people-pleasing, overworking, substance abuse, and even health crises.
The key is awareness — once you identify your coping mechanisms, you can start making changes. Healing takes time, but it is always possible. There is no trauma too big to heal, and with that healing, you can unlock a happier, more functional version of yourself.

In this episode, we explore the complex challenges faced by modern moms, whether balancing a career or managing a household full-time. We dive into the ever-present guilt many working moms feel as they try to balance professional goals with family responsibilities. On the other side, we address the burnout stay-at-home moms often experience, juggling an endless list of tasks without the breaks a typical workday might provide. Even stay-at-home moms feel guilty when they take time for themselves.
We also discuss the need for sharing household and parenting duties, especially when partners tend to unwind after work, leaving most of the domestic load to moms. The conversation covers the isolating aspects of motherhood, the financial stress, and the soaring cost of childcare, which only adds to the difficulty of balancing work and family life.
Through this episode, listeners will gain a deeper understanding of the non-stop demands of motherhood and why building a supportive community is crucial. Join us as we uncover practical solutions and share stories that resonate with moms everywhere, offering solidarity and a sense of hope.

In today’s episode, we dive into the essence of community and its importance in our lives. The pandemic left many of us feeling isolated and disconnected, and even now, we’re still figuring out how to reconnect in meaningful ways beyond Zoom and working from home. I also share a beautiful excerpt from Ingrid Brandstetter’s poem, which speaks to the transformative power of women coming together:
"There is true magic when women hold hands, share ideas, and combine their unique gifts at the table we build together."
As women, community is essential—for our support, growth, and well-being. So, where do you go to find your community? Who makes up your in-person support network? How are you nurturing these vital connections?
We explore the deep impact community has on our mental, emotional, and physical health. Whether you’re feeling disconnected or simply want to strengthen your sense of belonging, this episode offers insight, inspiration, and practical advice on building a strong, supportive community around you.

In Part 3 of our series, we continue our conversation with Dawn Lohr, who shares the profound and challenging journey she faced with her son’s mental health issues and substance use disorder. Dawn opens up about the heartache of losing her son, who took his own life at the age of 26. In this episode, she reflects on her ongoing grief and the strategies that help her navigate through it.
Dawn’s story highlights the difficulties of empathically supporting someone who is grieving. It’s easy to wish for a return to “normal,” but for those who are grieving, that normalcy may never return. The initial outpouring of support often wanes, leaving individuals to face their loss with diminishing attention from others.
For those seeking ways to support someone in the early days or years of their grief, consider the following:
Thoughtful Gifts: A soft blanket, a teacup, a journal, a candle, or planting a tree in memory.
Acts of Kindness: Offer to take them to lunch, visit briefly, bring a meal, or share stories about the person they lost.
Personal Touch: Send heartfelt cards with personal messages, sharing cherished memories and expressing your care. Avoid giving unsolicited advice; instead, offer support and acknowledge their unique grief journey.
Remember, grief is personal and doesn’t follow a set timeline. Simply saying, “I don’t know what to say, but I’m here for you,” can be deeply comforting.

In Part 2 of our 3-Part Series, we hear from Dawn Lohr, who bravely shares the heart-wrenching story of her son’s struggle with suicidal ideation and depression following a traumatic brain injury. Diagnosed with severe mental health issues, Dawn and her family tirelessly sought treatment and answers, battling through multiple suicide attempts. Tragically, her son’s journey ended in suicide.
With immense courage, Dawn highlights the critical need for a deeper understanding of brain and mental health, and advocates for improved treatment programs to support those in similar situations. This episode features an honest and emotional conversation about the events leading up to her son’s death and the unique grief experienced after a suicide. We explore the profound questions, the sense of emptiness, and the ongoing trauma that accompanies this type of loss.
Suicide remains a leading cause of death in the U.S., claiming over 48,000 lives in 2021. It was the second leading cause of death among individuals aged 10-14 and 25-34. The number of suicides in the U.S. nearly doubled the number of homicides in 2021, and the suicide rate among males was four times higher than that among females.
If you or someone you know is experiencing thoughts of suicide, please keep the number for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline handy: 988. Raise awareness and seek help.

Guest speaker Dawn Lohr shares her son’s journey from an outgoing kid who was a great soccer goalie, to a major concussion and subsequent thoughts of suicide. She walks us through the timeline of events that shaped a parent’s worst nightmare - in and out of treatment programs, psychiatric hospitals, and multiple attempts to take his life. Dawn shares how her faith and self-care helped her make it through some of the most difficult experiences while simultaneously raising her four children.
In this episode, we raise awareness of 1) brain health and how important it is to make sure your child is getting proper care after a concussion and at the same time, watching their behavior for changes in the years to follow, 2) learning that it is up to you as the parent to navigate the system and advocate for your child’s care. Often, traumatic brain injury leads to self-medicating, which can lead to addiction issues. Finding programs that treat both mental health issues and substance use disorders (a dual diagnosis) is not easy… but it is very necessary. Know the difference. Ask good questions. Get support, and 3) once you find a good place for your loved one to recover, it can be devastating when they choose to leave and say they don’t want help. Refusing treatment or even medication is part of the journey and renders you helpless. You might also encounter wait lists and financial challenges that come with long-term treatment, but there is hope. You have no choice but to keep going, keep seeking help, and make sure your child or loved one knows they are needed and wanted. It is a journey no one wants to experience but one that happens more often than expected.

In this episode, we continue the story that began in the previous episode… when things don’t go as planned. Jenny shares a story of how at first, she didn’t think she was getting what she wanted. But in fact, a lot of what she got was something she asked for! Strange, huh?
When things go terribly wrong, and there is nothing you can do to make them get back on track, there’s usually something bigger and Divine at play. But how do you know? How can you trust that? And how do we choose to be empowered by circumstances that are beyond our control?
Three lessons we talk about specifically when things go awry…
Our stories in this podcast are rich. They hold so much wisdom and so much depth that it’s hard to fathom how so much could happen just so we could hear and see the path that better serves our highest good.
But we must be awake to notice it. We must be tuned into possibilities as much as we are tuned into our own disappointments and frustrations.
We’d love to hear your stories. Go back to a time when things went sideways and you felt disappointed or sad as a result. See what there is for you to learn. Think about what your thoughts were going into the experience. Write down all the helpers and listen to all the messages that were given on a deeper, more silent level.
