Park Cities Baptist Church Sermons
Advent Day 19
In Matthew 2:1-12, we encounter a profound contrast between two responses to the newborn King. The wise men from the East traveled roughly a thousand miles, risking everything to worship Jesus, while King Herod clung desperately to his earthly throne. This passage challenges us to examine our own posture of worship: What are we willing to offer God that truly costs us something? The Magi brought their finest gifts — gold, frankincense, and myrrh — but more importantly, they brought their time, their trust, and their humble hearts. They fell on their faces in worship, demonstrating that authentic worship isn't just about Sunday services but about the daily surrender of our schedules, our security, and our self-sufficiency. The beautiful irony is that while Herod fought to protect his power, Jesus — the true King — would ultimately lay down H=his life.
As we navigate our own uncertain circumstances, we're reminded that God's eyes roam throughout the earth to support those whose hearts are completely his. The question we must ask ourselves today is simple yet profound: What are we bringing to the Lord in worship, and are we willing to trust him enough to risk what feels safe?
