Shelly's Shares: Boost Our Health And Mood Through Gratitude
Tired of wellness noise and quick fixes that don’t stick? Shelly brings the conversation back to a simple practice with outsized impact: gratitude. Not as a seasonal trend, but as a daily habit that steadies your mood, supports better sleep, and helps you carry hard days with more grace. We walk through practical ways to start—three to ten items in the morning, a brief reflection before bed, or a quick thank you during a run or walk—so the habit fits your life instead of becoming another chore.
Shelly draws on decades in health and wellness to connect everyday practices with evidence-based benefits. You’ll hear how gratitude crowds out irritability, lowers the emotional noise that fuels stress, and makes room for clearer decisions. We dig into the research linking gratitude with improved sleep and fewer aches, and we talk about why thanking others strengthens relationships and creates a feedback loop of support. This isn’t toxic positivity; it’s trained attention. By noticing small, specific good—warm bed, safe home, strong legs—we shape a day that’s calmer and more focused.
We also explore a powerful reframe for tough seasons: pair gratitude with learning. Ask what this moment is teaching you and how you’re growing through it. That shift from “why me?” to “what now?” restores a sense of agency without denying the struggle. Whether your practice is spiritual, reflective, or practical, consistency matters more than perfection. Start with one minute, keep it specific, and watch the benefits compound across your energy, mindset, and long-term well-being.
If this resonates, follow the show, share it with a friend who could use a reset, and leave a quick review so more people can find these tools. Tell us in the comments: morning or night—when do you practice gratitude?

To share tips, education, and inspiration around all of the components of wellness through solo and guest episodes. With 35 plus years as a health and wellness professional, a retired college professor, a speaker, and a multi-passionate entrepreneur, I certainly have lots to share. However, my biggest goal and inspiration in doing this podcast is to share the wellness stories of others with you. To bring in guests who can share their journey so that we can all learn together while making an impact on the health, the wellness, and lives of all of you, our listeners. The ultimate hope is that you leave today with even just one nugget that can enhance the quality of your life, and that you will, we all will, now and into the future, live our best quality of lives full of energy, happiness, and joy. Now let's dive into our message for today. Hello, my friends. Welcome back to Words of Wellness. My name is Shelly, and today is our Shelly's Shares episode. And I wanted to jump in today. I'm not sure exactly when all of you will listen to this episode, but we have just started the month of November. And I don't always make a reference to a month, but it had me thinking about sharing a little bit today about gratitude since we are in the month of November, and that is when we tend to take a little more time to focus on things that we are grateful for. And I know I shared on the episode when I talked about morning routine and how to kind of set the tone for your day. Part of that for me, and part of that that I recommend for all of you is take a little time for gratitude. And that can look a little different for each and every one of us. I know sometimes in the morning before I get out of bed, I'll just be grateful for a good night's sleep and be grateful for my comfortable bed and grateful for a roof over my head. Just some of the very simple things that we most all of us have, and there are some individuals who do not. So I like to be thankful and express gratitude for some of those simple things that we have, some of those simple pleasures that we get to enjoy. And so I just wanted to talk about that a little bit and give you all some ideas. Like that is something that I will do sometimes in the morning before I get out of bed. Many times when I am out running, walking, I will just say a quick prayer of gratitude for having the ability to get out and move my body, right? Get out and be able to move my legs and get some exercise. So I'm always very grateful for that. And then also, it can be really beneficial to write out things that you're grateful for. Whether you write out three things or 10 things every morning, or you do it before you go to bed, either way, or you do it both. You know, you could do it morning and night. The point is that in the morning, again, what you do in the morning helps set the tone for your day. So if you're taking time to be grateful and you have gratitude, that will overcome any maybe irritability we might be feeling. If we're we're frustrated about something, if we can somehow look at the positive sign and find gratitude in it somehow, it will overcome the feelings of frustration and irritability. We we can't be grumpy and and and be grateful at the same time. So that's a beautiful thing. So if we can kind of think of that on a day-to-day basis when we're maybe having a moment, think of something or more than one thing that we're grateful for, and that will definitely help our mood. So I wanted to share that, and I just wanted to share the importance of having those thoughts of gratitude, but also writing them out, taking that as a daily part of your journal practice or a daily part of your morning routine, or like I said, right before you go to bed, write out some of those things that you are grateful for. I know that you can come up with at least three to five things that you are grateful for. And I want to share something because I already knew that I wanted to just briefly share about gratitude today because we are in the month of November. And knowing that, guess what the verse of the day was enter into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise, give thanks to him and bless his name. Psalm 104. I thought, wow, well, that's a sign, right? This is exactly what I wanted to talk about. And just sharing just a little bit about great being grateful and having the gratitude, it really, in any way that we can do it, you know, it does definitely improve our physical, our psychological health. And research even supports gratitude's positive link to happiness. So, like I said earlier, if we are grateful, it really puts us in a happy, positive state of mind, in a happy mood. We can't be mad when we are in a state of gratitude. So studies show that grateful people report fewer aches and pains and even sleep better. And a lot of times, individuals who are more positive and grateful can also experience less, less negativity, less toxic emotions, which of course contributes to their overall wellness and well-being. So that is all really, really good stuff. Another thing that's important is to think about being grateful to others and and and saying thank you. And that always is important in whatever that looks like for you. So I just again wanted to share a little bit of thoughts on this day about gratitude. We know that the science supports it for sure as something to do on a regular basis. I mean, there's been plenty of studies done now that definitely show that having a state of gratitude is is good even during hard times, right? It it's easy to be grateful when things are going well. But again, even during challenging and difficult moments, finding something to be grateful for. I know for me personally, if I'm going through a challenging moment or a challenging time, I I really I really am intentional about focusing on, okay, what what am I grateful for right now, but also what is the lesson to be learned? Because I really have really worked on changing that mindset to think about what am I learning through this experience? How am I growing through this experience? And I think that's uh that's something that can be very, very beneficial also. And you know, it's it can be for some, it might be a little bit challenging to define gratitude, but it's basically has been defined as an emotion, it's an attitude, it's a habit, it's a personality trait for some. Many people are more, you know, have more gratitude in their hearts than some others. And again, like I said, it really does help us feel good, and it also can be linked to just being healthy, um, being a person that's very spiritual, has appreciation for nature and beauty and life, and which then can lead to fulfillment and joy. So I just wanted to again kind of share some thoughts, share some of the science behind it just very briefly, and encourage all of you to, if you're not already doing so, take time in your day to think about or write about what you are grateful for. And I encourage you to write down at least three things, potentially ten. We can probably think of more than 10, but if we can get in the habit of doing it on the on a daily basis, and again, whatever works for you. I think in the morning, again, whatever we do in the morning that's positive, it sets the tone for the day. But then also when we do it before we go to sleep, it helps set the tone for our sleep and and our nighttime routine. So again, it's gonna be whatever works for you. And just know that when you take this time, it really has shown to be beneficial to our quality of life, our well-being, our health, uh, and even the aging process. Do you notice that? You notice people who are more positive and energetic, that they they look healthier, they look younger. I know I've noticed that through the years, and I can only hope that that's how that's how I am, or I I hope I will be that way later in later years. But again, just wanted to encourage you all on this day. And as always, take time for yourself and your wellness. Take time to journal out those things that you are grateful for. And until next time, have a beautiful, blessed rest of your week, everyone. I'll see you next time on Words of Wellness. Thank you so much for tuning in to today's episode.
