UCP Auto Insurance Reforms in Alberta
The current government in Alberta, the United Conservative Party (UCP) is proposing changes to auto insurance in the province. These changes should be very concerning for all vehicle owners. Costs are going up, really going up, while your care and compensation as a result of an accident caused by someone else is going to be limited. As the most vulnerable vehicles and operators on the roads, motorcycle riders are most at risk of the negative impacts of these proposed changes.
The proposed "no fault" scheme eliminates your right to sue for damages from an at fault driver and their insurance company. Your access to care and financial compensation is determined by the government and agreed to by the insurance companies. Only in the case of conviction of a criminal offence do you have the opportunity to sue the at fault driver.
And just to kick things off, the UCP has raised the cap on insurance rate increases for the very best drivers to 7.5% in 2025 and again in 2026. In the province with the highest insurance premiums in the country, when inflation has been an issue for all Albertans, the UCP jumped on side with the big insurance companies to improve their profits.
Looking at other provinces who moved to a no fault system, it is motorcycle owners who experienced the greatest increases in insurance costs. How about a whopping 350% in Manitoba! It would stand to reason that we can expect motorcycles insurance premiums rise just as they have in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
Motorcycle owners must raise their voices for the government to hear the message this is simply not acceptable in the province of Alberta. We need a system that lowers insurance cost, holds bad drivers responsible for their decisions, and allows drivers and riders the opportunity to seek compensation for damages inflicted on them by someone else.
Contact your MLA. Let them know this is not acceptable. Talk with fellow riders so everyone knows what the government is doing. Work with motorcycle groups, clubs, societies, and not for profits to present a united voice on this issue. These reforms are only proposed at this point. Let's do all we can to make sure they don't become permanent.
