Over the past few weeks, I received a couple of emails and I've talked to a couple people. And what they're telling me is that they are spending time searching for themselves and the keywords they're trying to rank for in Google. Hi, my name is Glen. and I am the host of the visibility boost. What I really want to tell them and have told them if they are my client, is that you need to stop this. You need to stop Googling the keywords that you were trying to rank for constantly. So let's talk about this. It is in our nature to want to Google our names and our business names to see what shows up for that, to see where we show up and to see what is showing up. I get that that's completely normal. And I do recommend you Google your name and your business name every now and then maybe once a quarter. But where you're causing yourself problems. Is Googling the keywords you want to be ranking for continually. To see where you are ranking. What you're actually doing is potentially hurting your rankings. Because of this and here's why. One, you might not be your own ideal client. So at least if you're going to do it, do it in incognito window. So Google doesn't have all your history. But secondly, when you Google these keywords, you want to be showing up for and you go down and you're counting. Okay. Where am I showing up? And then you move on. You're not clicking on your link. So Google sees that. As when somebody searches for a key phrase. And they aren't clicking on the link. Google sees that as, oh, this may not actually be relevant to the keyword search. And so the more times this happens, whether it's you or somebody else. The more chances are you're actually going to rank lower and lower and lower. For that key phrase. So if you need to know where you are ranking, you can always turn to Google search console. It will tell you the keywords that people have searched to get to your website. And it will give you an average position in the timeframe that you are looking for. So that is your ideal place. If you really want to know, there are also tools that you can use that will tell you where you are ranking. But you need to stop. Searching for them constantly. And I continue to hear this. Well, I was searching for myself and I didn't show up. Here's the other thing. One, you may not always show up. 90% of the time you may be in position number two, but 10% of the time you may be in position 20. These things happen. It also may depend on what computer you are at, where you are at, what location, what is previously been searched on that browser? If you're using. Somebody else's computer. One thing to remember is that you and your best friend can be sitting on two computers side by side each, enter the same search term and get different results. Same thing for if you are at your home and search for it, and then you're at your office in search for something you will most likely again, get two different search results page. Google tries to serve people. The results that they think that individual person is looking for. And we'll click on in that moment. And that also depends on where they are because of local intent. Now. The other thing this could be hurting is if you are running Google ads and you are constantly searching for the key phrases that you're bidding on. To see if your ad is showing up. Here's the real truth. You've just cost yourself an impression with a potential customer. And this is true, especially if you were running on a super low budget, you are very budget restrained. Every time you are searching for and show up. Is a time that somebody else could have searched for and potentially clicked on your own ad. If you search for yourself and you click on the ad, then you are essentially costing yourself money. But if you search for something and you don't click on your ad again, Google sees that as potentially being less relevant. Google doesn't know, it's you searching just to see what your ad looks for. There are ways in Google ads where you can see is your ad showing up. What does it look like? Where is it showing up? Like there are ways to do this without actually going to Google. And searching for it. So, if you take anything away from this, it's please stop searching for those keywords. Just don't do it because you're not helping your business at all. Next month in my visibility method, insider circle. We're going to be talking all about keywords. And how to do keyword research, which is different from just doing. Keywords and seeing where you're landing in search. And then also using negative keywords and keywords in social. I will make sure to drop the link in the show notes below.
