04. Okasan (Mom): The Leap Day Child

Send us a text

Our conversations start with okasan (mom) which quickly pivots to her hometown, reflecting on our visits there in the 80’s and 90’s. Find out why her home she grew up in somewhat resembled a house from one of Ghibli Studio films, “My Neighbor Totoro”. Listen in to find out what all crazy things we’ve done and experienced, visiting Goto island, Nagasaki Prefecture. We reminisce about her extensive family and the memorable interactions we've had with them.

Some Japanese terms used in the podcast:

Goemon-buro (五右衛門風呂)- a bathtub made of cast iron which is built on top of a stove. It is usually deeper compared to modern Western-style bathtubs, allowing the bather to immerse themselves more fully in hot water. Traditionally, these baths were heated by a wood or charcoal fire built underneath the tub.

Obachan (おばあちゃん)- Grandma
