🎙️ “Reset & Rise: Making Sundays Work for You”
Hello and welcome back to Your Path To Career Success — the podcast that helps you build the skills, confidence, and strategies to thrive in your career.
I’m your host, Kathryn and today’s episode is for anyone who’s ever felt that quiet, creeping sense of unease on a Sunday — you know the one. You’ve had a lovely weekend, but then… that Sunday feeling kicks in.
Your brain starts drifting into the week ahead — the meetings, the to-dos, the conversations you’re dreading or replaying. Maybe you feel pressure to show up as the leader, the motivator, the calm one — when inside, you’re anything but.
We all experience that Sunday feeling differently. For some, it’s a slow simmer of anxiety. For others, it’s a full-on spiral by 6pm. But here’s the thing: it doesn’t have to be that way.
In fact, with a few mindset shifts and simple tools, Sunday can become your secret weapon. What if we could reframe Sundays as a space not for dread, but for intention? What if we could use them to reset, reflect, and rise into the week with clarity and confidence?
In today’s episode, we’re diving into:
• Why that Sunday feeling hits so hard — and what it’s really trying to tell you
• How to shift from anxious spiralling to purposeful planning
• Practical mindset resets to help you feel calmer and more in control
• Small, meaningful Sunday rituals to help you reset, recharge, and rise
• And how to turn Sunday into your secret weapon for a stronger week ahead
Before we jump in, grab your favourite beverage, find a comfy spot, and get ready to map out your leadership path with those lightbulb moments.
So, let’s get started!
1. Why Sunday Anxiety Happens
First off, let’s unpack why Sunday can feel so heavy.
For many of us, Sunday marks this mental switch from rest to responsibility. We’re moving from weekend freedom, where time feels fluid, into the structure and demands of the work week. And our brains? They tend to go into overdrive — running through unfinished tasks, upcoming meetings, deadlines, or just the sheer pressure of adulting.
Here’s a little truth: Sunday anxiety often isn’t even about Monday itself. Sometimes it’s guilt or worry that we didn’t rest enough, didn’t do enough, or didn’t ‘make the most’ of our weekend.
And if you add social media into the mix — scrolling through highlight reels of other people’s weekends — it’s like adding fuel to the fire of comparison and self-judgment.
The writer Anne Lamott once said,
“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes... including you.”
But how often do we actually unplug on Sundays? Instead, we often run ourselves down thinking about the week ahead.
So here’s the big takeaway:
Sunday itself isn’t broken — it’s how we relate to it that needs to change.
2. The Mindset Shift: Reclaiming Sunday
What if instead of dreading Sunday as the end of freedom, we thought of it as a gentle beginning?
Sunday can be your soft reset — a chance to prepare, reconnect with yourself, and set the tone for your week — but without the pressure to “do it all.”
It’s not about being productive or perfect. It’s about being kind to your future self.
Think of it like this: You wouldn’t sprint into Monday exhausted, right? So why not give yourself a little time to ease in?
One of my favourite quotes on this is from Jon Kabat-Zinn, the mindfulness guru:
“You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.”
Sunday can be your surfing lesson — learning to ride the waves of stress rather than letting them crash over you.
3. Tools to Reset & Rise
Alright, now for the fun part — some practical things you can do this Sunday to flip anxiety into calm, focus, and even joy.
🌿 Morning Routine Reset
Try not to let Sunday start with a rush or a lie-in that throws off your whole rhythm. Even 20 minutes of slow, peaceful morning time can make a huge difference. Maybe it’s coffee on the balcony, soft music, or jotting a few thoughts in a journal.
Example: One of my friends swears by her Sunday “coffee and quiet” ritual — no phones, just sitting outside and watching the world wake up. It sets her tone for the day.
🧘♀️ Mindful Moments
Even five minutes of mindfulness or meditation can slow down those racing thoughts. If you’re new to this, apps like Headspace, Calm, or Insight Timer are great starters.
Gratitude journaling is a simple but powerful tool too. Write down three good things from your past week and one thing you’re looking forward to next week. This helps your brain spot possibility, not panic.
Try this: “I’m grateful for…” and then list three small wins — maybe you had a great lunch, finished a book, or just survived a tricky conversation.
📝 Light Prep — Not Pressure
Instead of trying to plan your whole week, focus on one day: Monday. Make a simple, gentle to-do list. Lay out your clothes. Prep a meal. Tidy your desk.
This isn’t about over-planning — it’s about giving Monday a warm welcome mat.
🚶♂️ Get Outside
Fresh air is magic for your nervous system. Even a short walk around the block or time in a park can clear your head and reset your mood.
I read a study once that said just 20 minutes in nature can reduce cortisol levels — the stress hormone — significantly. So yes, your Sunday walk isn’t just for exercise, it’s medicine.
📵 Digital Boundaries
This one’s tough but critical: Try to unplug from work emails, social media, and news at least a few hours before bedtime.
Ask yourself: Does this email really need my attention at 8pm Sunday? Often, the answer is no.
Give yourself permission to protect your peace.
🎧 Create a Sunday Ritual
Give your brain something to look forward to. It could be a film night, a favourite meal, a playlist, a bath with candles — anything that signals to your brain, “This is my time to relax and recharge.”
4. End With Intention: Affirmations
I want to leave you with some gentle affirmations to say out loud or in your head:
• “I am ready for a new week, one step at a time.”
• “I choose calm over chaos.”
• “I am prepared, I am grounded, I am enough.”
• “Tomorrow is not a threat — it’s a fresh start.”
You don’t have to believe them immediately. Just try saying them, and see if they start to stick.
5. Closing Thoughts
So, if you’ve ever found yourself dreading Sunday or battling that Sunday feeling, I hope today’s episode reminds you it doesn’t have to be this way.
With a few small changes — in your mindset, your habits, and your rhythms — Sunday can become soft, sacred, and even joyful.
Remember, this isn’t about cramming more into your weekend. It’s about presence — being kind to yourself, resetting, and rising into the new week with intention.
