S11 Ep6 - Building Credibility Fast: How New Leaders Earn Trust Quickly
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Strong leadership isn’t claimed, it’s earned through consistent, everyday behaviour
Season 11 of Your Path to Career Success continues with Episode 6, focusing on one of the most critical challenges new leaders face: building credibility quickly in a new role.
In this episode, we explore how trust is formed in the early stages of leadership, why it’s often more fragile than people expect, and what you can do to strengthen your leadership presence from day one.
Because while experience and expertise matter, people don’t build trust based on CVs or job titles. They build it based on what they see you do consistently.
And in leadership, credibility is built faster — and more quietly — than most people realise.
Key insights and practical takeaways:
- Credibility is more than competence: It’s built on competence, consistency, and character — not just knowledge or expertise.
- Trust starts cautiously: In the early days, people are observing more than they’re engaging, and every action carries extra weight.
- Early mistakes can slow credibility: Overpromising, inconsistency, or trying too hard to prove yourself can unintentionally undermine trust.
- Follow-through builds confidence: Doing what you say you will do is one of the fastest ways to build reliability as a leader.
- Understanding before acting strengthens trust: Showing you’ve listened and understood builds buy-in for future decisions.
- Small behaviours create big impressions: Everyday actions — meetings, communication, responsiveness — shape long-term credibility more than big gestures.
Why this matters
The early stages of leadership are not just about delivering results — they’re about earning the right to lead.
Because when people trust you:
• Communication becomes more open
• Collaboration becomes easier
• Resistance reduces
• And decision-making becomes faster and more effective
Credibility isn’t built through perfection.
It’s built through consistency, clarity, fairness, and honesty — especially when things are uncertain.
And the leaders who understand this early create stronger foundations for long-term success.

🎙️ Season 11, Episode 7 — The Politics No One Warns New Leaders About
We’ll explore the hidden dynamics of workplace politics, how influence really works behind the scenes, and how new leaders can navigate competing priorities without compromising trust or integrity.
Have you ever worked with a new leader and found yourself quietly asking:
Can I trust them?
Do they really understand what they’re doing?
Are they here to support us — or just make their mark?
These questions don’t always get said out loud.
But they’re almost always there.
Because when a new leader steps into a role, people aren’t just observing what they do.
They’re deciding how much trust to place in them.
And here’s the reality. Credibility as a leader isn’t something you’re given automatically.
It’s something you build — often much faster than you might expect.
Hello and welcome back to Your Path to Career Success, the podcast that helps you build the skills, confidence and strategies to thrive in your career.
I’m your host, Kathryn. In the last episode, we explored how to navigate your first 90 days in a leadership role and set the right tone without rushing into change.
Today, we’re taking that one step further. Because once you’ve started listening, learning and building relationships, a new challenge appears:
How do you earn trust quickly?
In this episode, we’ll explore:
• What credibility really means in leadership
• Why trust can be fragile in the early stages
• The common mistakes that slow credibility down
• Five practical ways to build trust quickly and authentically
• And how to strengthen your leadership presence from day one
So grab your favourite beverage, settle in, and let’s talk about building credibility as a new leader.
Part 1 – What Credibility Really Means in Leadership
When people hear the word credibility, they often think of expertise.
And while competence is important, credibility in leadership is broader than that.
It’s usually built on three key elements:
• Competence – Do you know what you’re doing?
• Consistency – Do you behave in a reliable way?
• Character – Do people trust your intentions?
Your team is constantly — and often unconsciously — assessing these things.
They’re asking:
• Can I rely on this person?
• Do they follow through on what they say?
• Do they make decisions fairly?
And importantly, credibility isn’t built through a single moment.
It’s built through a series of small, consistent signals over time.
Part 2 – Why Trust Is Fragile at the Start
In the early days of leadership, trust is often neutral — or even slightly cautious.
Your team doesn’t know yet:
• how you handle pressure
• how you respond to mistakes
• or whether you truly support them
And because of that uncertainty, people tend to watch more closely.
Small actions carry more weight than they normally would.
For example:
• A missed follow-up might be seen as unreliability
• A rushed decision might be seen as poor judgement
• A lack of communication might be interpreted as avoidance
This doesn’t mean you have to be perfect.
But it does mean that early consistency matters more than you might expect.
Part 3 – The Mistakes That Slow Credibility Down
Let’s look at a few common mistakes that can unintentionally delay trust-building.
• Trying to prove yourself too quickly
Some leaders feel pressure to demonstrate expertise immediately.
But overemphasising this can come across as dismissive or overly authoritative.
• Overpromising and underdelivering
In an effort to build confidence, new leaders sometimes commit to too much too soon.
When those commitments aren’t met, credibility takes a hit.
• Inconsistency in behaviour
Saying one thing and doing another — even in small ways — creates doubt.
• Avoiding difficult conversations
Leaders who delay addressing issues may appear uncertain or lacking confidence.
None of these come from bad intentions. They usually come from pressure. But being aware of them helps you avoid slowing down your own progress.
Part 4 – Five Ways to Build Credibility Quickly
So how do you actively build trust as a new leader?
Let’s explore five practical approaches.
1. Do What You Say You’ll Do
This sounds simple — but it’s one of the most powerful credibility builders.
When you follow through consistently:
• people begin to rely on you
• your words carry more weight
• and trust grows naturally
If something changes, communicate it early.
Reliability isn’t about perfection.
It’s about transparency and follow-through.
2. Show You Understand Before You Act
Before making decisions, take time to demonstrate that you understand the situation.
This might sound like:
• “From what I’ve seen so far…”
• “It sounds like the main challenge is…”
When people feel understood, they’re far more open to your leadership.
And it reinforces that your decisions are thoughtful — not rushed.
3. Be Clear and Decisive When Needed
While listening is important, credibility also comes from direction.
Your team needs to know:
• where they’re heading
• what matters most
• and how decisions will be made
Clarity creates confidence.
And even if every decision isn’t perfect, being thoughtful and decisive builds trust faster than hesitation.
4. Treat People Consistently and Fairly
One of the fastest ways to lose credibility is inconsistency in how people are treated.
Strong leaders:
• apply standards fairly
• listen to different perspectives
• and avoid favouritism
People don’t expect perfection.
But they do expect fairness.
And when they see it, trust grows quickly.
5. Admit What You Don’t Know
This one often surprises people.
Many assume credibility comes from having all the answers.
In reality, credibility often grows when you’re honest about what you don’t know — and committed to finding out.
Saying:
• “I don’t have the full picture yet”
• or “Let me look into that”
…can actually strengthen trust.
Because it signals honesty, humility and good judgement.
Part 5 – Building Credibility Through Small Moments
Credibility isn’t built in big speeches or major announcements.
It’s built in everyday moments:
• how you run meetings
• how you respond under pressure
• how you handle mistakes — your own and others’
These moments might seem small.
But over time, they shape how people experience your leadership.
And that experience becomes your reputation.
Part 6 – A Reflection for New Leaders
If you’re stepping into leadership — or preparing to — here are three questions to reflect on:
First: What signals am I sending through my everyday actions?
Second: Where can I be more consistent in how I show up?
And third: What is one small commitment I can follow through on this week?
These questions help you focus on what truly builds trust — not just what looks impressive on the surface.
A Final Thought
Credibility isn’t about being the smartest person in the room.
• It’s about being reliable.
• It’s about being consistent.
• And it’s about showing that people can trust both your decisions and your intentions.
Because when trust is present, leadership becomes easier.
People engage more.
They communicate more openly.
And they’re far more willing to move forward with you.
And that’s what turns a new leader into a trusted one.
Looking Ahead
In the next episode, we’re going to explore a topic that many new leaders encounter — but few are prepared for.
Because even with strong intentions and growing credibility, there’s another layer to leadership that often comes as a surprise:
Workplace dynamics and politics.
In Episode 7, we’ll explore:
🎙️ The Politics No One Warns New Leaders About
We’ll look at how influence works behind the scenes, how to navigate competing priorities, and how to stay effective without losing your integrity.
Before you move on with your day, here’s one final question to reflect on:
What is one action you can take this week that would increase your team’s trust in you?
I’m Kathryn, and this is Your Path to Career Success.
Remember — credibility isn’t built in a single moment.
It’s built in the choices you make, the consistency you show, and the way you lead every day.
Thank you for listening, and I’ll see you next time as we continue building your path to career success.
