3 Crypto Scams We Fell For (And How You Can Avoid Them)
In this episode, we're pulling back the curtain on the dark side of crypto — the scams, rug pulls, and insider tricks we've personally been caught up in. This isn't a warning from the sidelines. We were in the group chats, we held the tokens, and we watched it happen from the inside.
Scam #1: The Meme Coin Pump-and-Dump. Rick recounts being pulled into a coordinated meme coin scheme where he was asked to seed liquidity, recruit buyers, and wait for a bigger influencer to "confirm" the project — only to watch the token stall, the operator go dark, and the money vanish. What followed was months of chasing for a refund, a public callout, and a flood of DMs from other victims revealing the same operator had scammed people across multiple countries for six-figure sums.
Scam #2: The Fake Prediction-Engine ICO. A presale pitch dressed up as a legitimate prediction market project, sold with fabricated urgency ("spots close tonight") and a promise of outsized returns. After the money was sent, the "team" went quiet, rebranded the project into something completely different, padded the community with fake accounts, and disappeared — classic 2017 ICO-era playbook.
Scam #3: The Community Management Trap. A legitimate-sounding job offer that turned into an inside seat for a rug pull — payment in tokens instead of cash, a pre-sale that pumped hard on launch, and insiders dumping within minutes while the community was left holding the bag.
Across all three, the same patterns show up again and again: manufactured urgency, vanishing teams, moved liquidity, and people used as unwitting marketing for a scam they didn't know they were part of.
What you'll learn:
- How pump-and-dump meme coin schemes recruit "credible" faces to push the project
- Why manufactured urgency ("last chance," "spots close tonight") is one of the biggest red flags in any presale
- How project rebrands are used to keep a scam alive after the original plan collapses
- The warning signs of an inside job when you're offered payment in tokens instead of cash
- Practical ways to protect yourself before you send that first wallet transfer
Whether you're new to crypto or you've been burned before, this one's a masterclass in spotting the scam before it spots you.
