Hello friends and welcome back to Journeys with Jen, the podcast where we talk travel dreams, real experiences, and how to turn that PTO into unforgettable memories. Today we're heading back to Disney World, and this time I'm taking you behind the magic. My husband and I recently experienced one of Disney's enchanting extras, The Keys to the Kingdom Tour at Magic Kingdom. It's a five-hour walking tour that lets you explore secret areas, learn more about the park's creation, and yes, even walk through the legendary utilitors beneath the park. If you've ever wondered how Disney keeps the magic alive every single day, this is one episode you're not going to want to miss. What is keys to the kingdom? I've always loved Disney's Enchanted Extras Collection. Those unique experiences that let guests dig a little deeper into the parks. They're perfect if you've ever been to Walt Disney World multiple times and want a chance to see it in a new light, or if it's your first visit and want to get a glimpse behind the curtain. Keys to the Kingdom wasn't the first tour for us in this collection, but it has quickly become one of our favorites. Here's my first tip: try to book this tour close to 60 days out as you can. It fills up quickly. But here's an insider secret. You might just snag a spot. This tour is perfect for anyone who loves Disney or Walt himself, and you can handle about five hours of walking. Also, it's a small group experience with about 16 to 22 other people, and you'll be moving through the park crowds as you explore. It's truly Disney up close and personal. Behind the scenes of magic. Our guide's name was Jen. So of course, she already had the best name possible, and she would truly make the tour. The guides are what make these experiences unforgettable. Jen was personable, funny, and so knowledgeable. She wove us through the crowds with an ease on a very busy park day. Be sure you ask your guide about their costume and why it's equestrian themed. There's a fun and telling story behind that one. One of the coolest parts to the Keys of the Kingdom tour is you get to experience two classic attractions during the tour. For us, it was the Jungle Cruise and the Haunted Mansion. These are two of mine and my hubby's absolute favorites. And yes, you get to skip the line. Now, I of course, as a librarian and a teacher, love learning. So one of my favorite things was learning about the names printed on the windows along Main Street USA. Each name honors someone who helped bring Walt's dream to life. Many of those people worked tirely after his passing to make sure his vision didn't fade. It gave me a new appreciation for the park we all love. And then the moment you've all been waiting for, the utilitors. They did not disappoint. We learned how the garbage is moved across the park without guests seeing it. How cast members use the tunnels to get from their clock-in points to their actual work locations. It's incredible. It's also huge. Cast members park more than a mile away from Magic Kingdom. They ride a bus in to where they get let out at the beginning of the Utilidors. There, they can clock in. Then they have to travel across those utilitors, often more than a mile, to get to their actual station where they are going to greet all of us lovely guests. So keep that in mind when you are looking at those fabulous cast members taking care of you. Now, my favorite part in the Utilidors was the costume workshop. Here is where the seamstresses and designers make sure every character and cast member's costumes is perfectly magical and up to Disney's standards. It was like peeking into the heartbeat of the park, or even better, into the fairy godmother's magic wand. Now, let's talk about the man behind the magic. Here in the Utilidors, we got to see photos, letters, and archives from what, from Walt and Roy Disney. We already loved their story, but seeing these personal touches, their handwriting, their photographs, it made it even more real and more emotional. You could feel the passion in the place. We're lifelong Disney fans, but after this tour, we became lifelong Walt and Roy fans too. It was inspiring to see how the company continues to honor Walt's original dream. Imagineers are still bringing his ideas to life and some of their own. We got to peek at some of the upcoming projects through their drawings, models, and conceptual art. And if you're a Disney pen collector, boy have they got you covered. Yes, they have all the Disney Pen collections on display. But remember, look, don't touch. Now, for some more of the details, the lunch, the keepsake keepsakes you get, and some tips. Lunch is provided in the tour, and you'll dine at Columbia Harbor House, one of my favorite quick service restaurants. You get to order your meal ahead of time, and when your group arrives, it's already waiting, all set up and ready for you to enjoy, which is a nice touch after hours of walking. They also give you a special keepsake, but I'm not going to spoil the surprise. You'll have to experience that for yourself. But if you are a Disney pen collector, you are not going to be disappointed. Now, a few practical tips to help your day be smooth and magical. One, you must be 16 years or older to participate in the tour. Second, cameras, video equipment, and cell phones are not allowed during the backstage options. Your guide will let you know exactly where you can and can't take photos. If you need to take a phone call, just quietly let your guide know and they'll direct you to where it's appropriate for you to take it. Three, wear comfortable shoes. It's a five-hour walk, people. Five hours. You're going to be on your feet walking across the parks. Be sure you have your comfortable shoes on. Four, bring a refillable water bottle. There are plenty of spots to fill up and they give you some water along the way, but the refillable water bottle will help out. Fifth, be prepared for any kind of weather. Tours will go on, rain or shine. And finally, be ready to make some friends. You're going to spend your day with other Disney friends, and by the end, you may even swap some stories and talk about your favorite attractions like your old pals. Here are my final thoughts. For us, the Keys to the Kingdom tour was worth every penny and every step. It gave us a deeper appreciation for Walt Disney World, not just as theme park, but as a living, breathing piece of history and its creativity. Even after dozens of visits, there is still so much more magic to uncover, and this tour proves it. So if you've ever wanted to peek behind the curtain and see how the magic really works, add keys to the kingdom to your Disney bucket list. You'll never see Magic Kingdom quite the same way again. It's experiences like this that remind me why I love what to do, helping others find those same moments of wonder, connection, and the joy that travel brings.
