The newly discovered radium had everyone in awe, the magical glow was used for everything from skin to watch dials. Unfortunately, though it was known to be dangerous, the extent of how dangerous it was had not yet been determined. After several women who worked or had worked for the Radium Dial Plant started getting sick, the company was quick to cover it up. Many girls who died of radium poisoning from the working conditions of the factories were misdiagnosed as having died of syphilis, taking their lives and ruining their reputations. The determination of a handful of people led to safer working conditions and the creation of OSHA, but the unsafe conditions had already claimed the lives of many young women.
