Travel Party of 5 | Points & Miles for Family Travel
Let us pull back the curtain and show you how you can maximize money you're already spending to earn enough credit card points and miles to travel with your family for nearly free.
We've used credit card points and miles to take our family of 5 on trips to places like Costa Rica, San Diego, Disneyland, Oceanside, NYC, Washington DC, Hawaii, and next year we have already booked Paris, Spain and Japan!
Using credit card points and miles (often called travel hacking) doesn't have to be overwhelming or take a ton of time, and we can show you how.
Can you earn a lot of points and miles without opening up multiple credit cards? Only if you have a really high amount of spend each month. For people with larger families, opening new cards is the easiest and fastest way to earn enough points and miles to take a couple of really low cost (but not low budget) family vacations every year!
If you want to learn ways to help you and your family travel more affordably using credit card points, this show is for you.

Thailand Series And Quick Updates
SPEAKER_00Today's episode is part two of three of our Thailand trip. And in this episode, we are visiting the island of Kosamui. We are sharing the incredible Hyatt Hotel that we booked on points and the incredible upgrade that we got and a lot more. So listen in. Hi, I'm Rhea.
SPEAKER_01And I'm Dwayne.
SPEAKER_00And we are your hosts of the Travel Party of Five podcast, where we share how we travel as a family of five around the world.
SPEAKER_01We will also share how we use points and miles to travel as affordably as possible and sometimes even completely free.
SPEAKER_00So if you're wanting to travel more with your family, but you're not sure how, we'd love for you to listen in.
SPEAKER_01So welcome to our podcast where we hope you learn a thing or two to get you closer to your next trip.
SPEAKER_00Hello.
SPEAKER_01Thanks for tuning in.
SPEAKER_00Welcome back to Travel Party Five Podcast. We are happy you are here. We are a lot less jet lagged than our last episode.
SPEAKER_01But still jet lag.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Yes. The kids are been a week. The kids have been waking up at two or three o'clock in the morning for a full seven days now. And it got so bad that this morning I I or yesterday I bribed them and I said, if you sleep in until whoever sleeps in until at least 7 a.m. gets something of their choice from Starbucks. And two of our three kids succeeded.
SPEAKER_01Well, I think they were awake and just waited until they're in their room until seven. That's fine.
SPEAKER_00I don't care. As long as they're not being loud and waking me up, I don't care what they do.
SPEAKER_01But one of them was out there at like five something.
SPEAKER_00Yes. So he's disappointed that he doesn't get Starbucks today. But what are you gonna do? Um we also noticed, and I this I'm also gonna blame this on jet lag. I went in today to get ready for recording this episode and realized that last week's episode did not go live. So for the last six days, I thought that our first part of our Thailand trip was live and on the website or on, you know, on the interwebs, on the podcast apps, and it was not. So I I did wonder why nobody, like not one person sent me a message about the episode because I normally get DMs from you guys every week about the episode, and I haven't gotten a single one. But I just thought, ah, people are busy, like whatever. No, no, no one heard it. So it's live now, as of Sunday. But sorry.
SPEAKER_01So it's out now.
TripTales Shoutout And Point Moves
SPEAKER_00It's out now, yes. Part one just went live. So normally I would say at the beginning of this, like if you haven't listened to part one, go back and listen to it, but you most likely have not listened to part one. So I guess today you get two for one. So part one and part two live as of Monday. Uh March 30th. What's the date? Today's the 29th. So yeah, the 30th. We'll be good to go. Um before we jump in, one other thing I wanted to add that has nothing to do with Thailand, but I literally just went in and added an episode from this person's podcast to my must uh like next listen, whatever, um, to listen to next. That was not clear. And I know that I've mentioned her podcast on this podcast several times, but I wanted to just give one more shout out to uh Kelsey at TripTales because every time I need like either a trip in like destination inspiration or I'm looking for information on a specific destination, she is one of my go-tos to look at first. Um, and if maybe you haven't heard me talk about it, just a quick kind of recap TripTales is a travel podcast where every single week a real person shares their real trip from start to finish, um, like where they stayed, what they did. It's it's not points and miles specific, although she does occasionally mention points and miles. Um, but it's like, it's like all about the vibes of the trip. And I find it so helpful. So the one I just went in and added to my like next step to listen to is her Denmark episode that came out, I think, just in January. So it's pretty recent. And the reason I did that is because choice points and uh preferred hotels are devaluing their transfer ratio program from city to choice and city to preferred hotels. And next summer I want to take a trip to Scandinavia, so like Denmark, Norway, that area. And those hotels are really popular there. And I was planning to use a bunch of our city points to book those hotels. Um, but the transfer ratio is devaluing in the next couple of weeks. And so I am probably going to preemptively transfer points before that happens in preparation for booking this trip in the next like three months or so. However, in order to know how many points I need to have, I need to basically plan the trip. And so I just added her Denmark episode that she just posted to my um queue so that I can listen.
SPEAKER_01So wait, that podcast, random people call into her and they talk about it's not, I mean, it's not random people, but yes, it's like so she interviews people who have taken trips.
SPEAKER_00So like I went on her podcast last year, maybe, and I talked about when we went to the Kimpton Seafire as a couple's trip. Um, but I mean she did what she has one episode where the family rented out a yacht on um in um the Virgin Islands. And like for like a month after that, I was like, how could we do that? Because it sounded incredible. It's like you literally rent the whole boat. There's like a chef on the boat, you know, they you can, you know, work out your itinerary with the company you rent the the boat from, but it sounded magical. Unfortunately, I think it was like$15,000. And I was like, oh, like I don't know about that. But I mean, it's all kinds of like unique trips and unique destinations, and I really enjoy it.
SPEAKER_01So that would be pretty fun, but oh I know, yeah. I don't know about they would stay on the boat.
Flights To Koh Samui Basics
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. You like stay on the boat and they stay on the boat, and they like clean up your room for you, you know, middle of the day, and cook food for you and are you know, drive you to wherever you want to go. And I mean, it sounded incredible. So yeah, she has lots of fun episodes like that. So, anyways, this is a long-winded way of saying you should check it out. The the podcast uh is called Trip Tales, and I can even link it in the show notes for you. But I I highly recommend, and Kelsey is just a fantastic human. Oh, and she started doing these like midweek episodes where it's kind of like travel adjacent things. So, like she talks about um like you know, five makeup items that she brings on trips or that sort of thing. And I really have enjoyed those two. It's like getting to know her um on a little bit of a deeper level, and so I enjoy both of those things. Um okay, let's talk about Kosamui.
SPEAKER_01Yes. So let's start with the plane ride there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So I booked both of our, so our um inter-Thailand flights um from Pukat to Kosamui and then Koosamui to Bangkok. I booked on Bangkok Airways. And I mentioned this in last week's episode, which you haven't heard yet. But I booked maybe two months in advance, and I think I could have gotten it significantly cheaper if I had booked maybe six months in advance. So use this as a lesson. That's how I would do it next time. Okay, so what is your thoughts? As we're we go to the airport, we we took a black lane from our hotel in Phuket to back to the Phuket Airport again, about 45 minutes. Used our second black lane credit that we have from our two City Strata Elite cards for the first half of 2026. And again, it was great. The black lane rides are fantastic. I've been super happy with them so far.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, not a problem. Or no issues with them. Yeah, and they provide Wi-Fi, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Wi-Fi, waters, you name it. The drivers are always great. They don't talk to you.
SPEAKER_01Nice, clean, comfortable, super cool fans.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01All right, so we fly from Phuket to Koisamui. We obviously board in Phuket. We our plane is on the tarmac. We have to take a bus to the plane. Yeah. And as we're pulling up, I noticed the plane is like an older plane. And very small. Very small. So small that they're putting the luggage like in the front and the back of the plane, like not even underneath the plane. And it was a propeller plane. Yeah. It was the first time I had ever been on one of those. Yeah. And walking up, I was, you know, a little nervous.
SPEAKER_00I was actually not nervous at all, but we did you board from the tarmac and you go up the stairs. And we were in group one.
SPEAKER_01It was like five stairs.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was wasn't very high. We were in group one. The groups are solely based on your seat number. So, like rows one through ten was group one, and rows like 11 through 20, I think, was group two.
SPEAKER_01So small plane, two seats on each side.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Uh, no way that the luggage would have fit overhead. No way. No way. So you you we checked the bags both times. It was included in our tickets both times. The other thing that was included, this is a one-hour flight, mind you, if that, was lunch.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, what did we get? A sandwich?
SPEAKER_00Um, I don't even remember what it was because I don't even think we ate it, but but did everybody get lunch?
SPEAKER_01No. No.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah. I'm unclear how much everyone got lunch, but we did get lunch. And we even for the kids, I think they had kids' meals for the two little kids, anyways. Um I must have chosen that at booking, but I know that I didn't pay extra for lunch. I would never do that, especially for a one-hour flight. So I'm I have no idea how we ended up with lunch, and not everyone did, but I I don't know. So yeah, they served lunch. I mean, plane food is never very good, right? Unless you're like in business class. So sometimes it can be, but um, it was fine. But the flight was fine until the end.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was fine. Beautiful, beautiful views from the plane. Yes. I mean, yeah.
SPEAKER_00There was You're basically flying from one big island in Thailand to another big island.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Island? Island. It's not island.
SPEAKER_01Island, Thailand, island, whatever land. Um, but yes, so we make our descent into Koistamui. The plane is like not straight. It's like going sideways as we're going down, and we're getting closer and closer to this runaway. And I mean, it was a little rough. We landed rough. People clapped. I mean, yeah, that's how bad the landing was, or scary it was. When we landed and like we realized we were safe, people were clapping off point.
Landing And Hyatt Arrival
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So yeah, it was a little bumpy right at the end, and yeah, it was oh, you know, you're kind of like looking at each other like, oh, like I don't know about this, but it all worked. It was fine, thankfully. It was fine. So we land in Koesamui, we get our bags, and we I had arranged uh transportation through our hotel, which was the Hyatt Regency Koesamui. This was pretty cheap because it's nine minutes from the airport, it's very close. Super close. So I I did that on the way there, and I mean I think it was like 500 bot, which is like$15. Yeah. It did take us a minute to find our driver because he was not holding up his sign like so people could see it.
SPEAKER_01It was what I didn't even know if he was there when we first got there.
SPEAKER_00Maybe not. Our our oldest son is the one who uh noticed. He was like, wait, what kind of hotel are we staying at? And I'm like, it's a Hyatt. And he was like, Oh, well, that guy has a Hyatt Regency sign. And I was like, Where? And sure enough, he did, but we had scoured all the people with signs and hadn't seen it.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, and he had multiple names like with him.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, not just my name. Yeah. So we get in a van, we are the only people in the van, and we drive the 10 minutes to the hotel. They, you know, drop you off. The lobby is an open air lobby, beautiful, like stunning.
SPEAKER_01Yes. View is stunning.
SPEAKER_00I booked this hotel. I booked this hotel using Hyatt points. I booked two rooms. I booked a king bedroom and a twin bedroom. It is a category five Hyatt, so 20,000 points a night per room. Um, I emailed about two months ahead of time asking for connecting rooms, and they were able to say via email, yes, like we can give you connecting rooms, not a problem. I originally had booked uh garden view rooms because that's all that was available via points. I think it is important to note that if you want connecting rooms, you have to choose like the two rooms that you book, you have to choose. Like if they're both, if one says ocean view, you have to choose another ocean view, or if one says garden view, you have to choose another garden view. So that's just like logistics based on the hotel, right? You want to make it as easy as possible for them to give you the connecting rooms. So when we were in our black lane, actually driving to the Phuket Airport, I checked in the Hyatt app and noticed that we had been upgraded. One of our rooms was upgraded to a partial ocean view twin bedroom, and the other room was upgraded to the Regency Suite, I think it's what it was called. So then I was super excited because I knew that we were getting a suite, and I love a suite.
SPEAKER_01I mean, it was a great room.
SPEAKER_00It was huge for all huge.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Great bathrooms, great showers, tubs, view. We were on the first floor. I don't like being on the first floor, but I didn't mind this room.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was fine. It was completely fine. There's a full video in the Kosamui highlight on my Instagram if you want to see both rooms. Like, even just the kids' room, the kids' plain twin-bed standard room was so nice. It had a massive, like, walk-through shower and a soaking tub. I mean, it was fantastic. And when I put it on Instagram, people were like, wow, this is stunning. And I'm like, this is the kids' room. This isn't even the suite. And then it connected into the suite, which was also super nice. So go check out the video. Um, but yeah, plenty of room, plenty of space. It was fantastic. The hotel is excellent. We would absolutely stay there again.
SPEAKER_01100%.
SPEAKER_00Um, let's here, let's talk about some of the stuff the hotel had to offer, and then we can talk about like the things that we did while we were there, which wasn't a ton, but well, checking in, they provided us again with a cold towel for your face and a welcome drink.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It was like some kind of coconut drink. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was, but it was red. So I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Wasn't my favorite, but you know, a cold freezing towel on a hot day goes a long way.
SPEAKER_00I did clarify at check-in because we had two rooms. I wanted to make sure that we would get the breakfast benefit for all of us. And we did get a little bit of mixed messages on this, but ultimately they ended up giving it to us for two adults and two kids. And then we negotiated a price to pay for our youngest daughter. They wanted us to pay like 500 bot a day, which is$15. But I said I brought, I literally brought her with me. And I was like, she's six years old and very small and doesn't really eat that much. And so we negotiated a price of 275 bot, which was, I don't know, like seven or eight dollars. Yeah. Not so not a lot. So for our four nights there, it was like 30 bucks. So I felt fine about that considering the the breakfast buffet is fantastic. They even have a little kids' area with like donuts set up and it's like lower to the ground so kids can easily get it. There's yogurts, there's all kinds of cute little things.
SPEAKER_01A Nutella dispensary.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yes, the Nutella. I think this trip, Dwayne finally forbade our kids from eating Nutella at breakfast because they put it all over their toast. They get it at the breast. And then they get it all over themselves. And then they're filthy.
SPEAKER_02Start of the day.
SPEAKER_00They're filthy for the whole day. And yeah. Um the buffet has everything you could want.
SPEAKER_01Um they even have another spectacular buffet.
SPEAKER_00Yes, like so many different types of food. There's dim sum, there's ramen, there's the thing I've noticed about these hotels in Thailand is they really are trying to cater to every type of clientele. So there's like a Chinese breakfast, there's an American breakfast, there's like a more European kind of breakfast, they have like salad and hummus and all these things at breakfast. And they have pancakes and crepes and fresh coconuts. Yes, this hotel had fresh coconuts with the Hyatt Regency logo, um branded on it. Branded on it, yeah. And so every morning you could go in and just get a fresh coconut water out of a coconut and bring it to your table. Obviously, they have made to order like lattes and mochas and Thai iced tea. Yep, Thai tea, which is what we got. So, yeah, fantastic breakfast, zero complaints. There is also a club at this property. So I don't actually know what they have in terms of breakfast because we never went there for breakfast. But in the evening, they do have some hot item. Like you could probably make a dinner out of it if you're not super picky, I think. We never did, but I think that you could if you were trying to save money and didn't want to go anywhere.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they have like cold meats, cheese, crackers.
SPEAKER_00And yeah, like a few hot items that like beer, wine, yeah, some alcohol. They even had like a cocktail station where you could make your own cocktails, and they had like recipes for like, oh, if you want to make this cocktail, this is how you do it. So that was unique. I hadn't seen that in a club before.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and they had all the menus to all the restaurants, so which made me believe that or made me think that you could order and they would bring it there. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I don't know if I mean we didn't try that, so I don't know. I guess I was like thinking it's so that you can be like, oh well, I want to go here for dinner.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, or that I don't I don't know.
SPEAKER_00The hotel is beachfront, so it is directly on the beach. I wouldn't say it's a swimmable beach. The waves were pretty rough, and there seemed to be some rocks in the water when we walked in a little ways. I definitely wouldn't let my kids swim in there, probably.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean it it would the view was great.
SPEAKER_00Beautiful.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. The the beach, you know, the the sand was a little rocky. Um but yeah, waves were were big.
SPEAKER_00One of the hotel restaurants is directly on the beach.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And it's a really cool experience to eat there. We had dinner there one night. It was one of the best meals that we had on our trip, in my opinion.
SPEAKER_01Yep, it was pretty good.
SPEAKER_00And you can just literally sit and you're staring at the ocean. And there's all different types. So they have regular table seating, but the closer you get to the water, they have like beanbag chairs and all these other, there's a hammock, like all these other kind of swing, beachy style um seating arrangements. And when we were eating dinner, they were setting up for live music that night.
SPEAKER_01Which I actually stayed for for a couple songs.
SPEAKER_00But yeah. So I mean, it would be a really fantastic place to just have like a leisurely dinner, and the kids can kind of run around and they're not bothering anybody. It was it was delicious. The food that we had was also very good. So Dwayne ordered like a tuna.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like a tuna filet. It was really, really good.
SPEAKER_00And I had fried snapper, I think, some sort of fried fish, and it came with spicy green mango salad and a spicy lime sauce that I still think about. It was so good. And the green mango was almost like cut into like spaghetti shaped. So it was like, I don't know, it was delicious. Something I've never had before and would totally eat again. So great experience there.
SPEAKER_01I just remember the server. I asked the server because you can order the tuna like it was like five grams, ten grams, or fifteen grams or whatever. And I was like, do you think I should be or think I should get the five grams or what? And she looked at me, she goes, You need the 10 grams. I was like, okay.
SPEAKER_00You're like, thanks.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, did not disappoint.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was a great meal, so would absolutely recommend. The other restaurant that's on property, we actually didn't eat at for lunch. Or dinner, but it's the same place where they have the breakfast buffet. It's called Yangna, I think. And their their dinner menu looked fantastic. It's they have a lot of Thai dishes. So if you want to try some like true Thai food, they do have that. We just didn't ever make it there. Um, and we did order room service one night also after a tour that we uh that we did that took a very long time, which we'll talk about. So let's see. Two restaurant or no, three restaurants. There's the club and the the breakfast restaurant, which also serves lunch and dinner, plus the other restaurant, which the name is um starts with an S. What was the name of it?
SPEAKER_01Uh oh, Sen Sun or something? Like C Sun.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Yes.
SPEAKER_01Something like that. But that was the one right on the beach.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you can't miss it. The pools at this property are stunning.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Like the main pool had It's like an infinite crazy view where you just see the ocean and it's so crazy. There's also like a pool bar you can order food from. They also have a kid, kind of a kids' pool area that has a little water slide. And then they have like other wading pools closer to the the water that I one was an adult pool and then the other one was a family pool. Yeah. So I think if you had like younger toddler kids, that's probably where I would be because the water is shallower.
unknownYep.
SPEAKER_00We had really good service at the pool. They have like a very American-style menu that you can get, like pizzas and all that. And they also have a happy hour a couple times a day. So one day we were at the pool and we got espresso martinis that were shockingly good.
SPEAKER_01How good.
SPEAKER_00Like I took a sip and I was kind of like, why did you order this? And then we were both like, oh, this is actually really good. So would recommend that. This hotel also has something that we haven't really ever seen at a hotel before. And if we have, we've never used it. And that was a kids' club.
SPEAKER_01Camp Hyatt.
SPEAKER_00This was so fantastic because you can drop your kids off there for free.
SPEAKER_01And they do activities. Yep. They had a Nintendo Switch.
unknownYes.
SPEAKER_01I think they can put on a movie.
SPEAKER_00Yes. It's definitely geared towards younger kids. I think the ages, I'm not sure if there's a minimum age, but um, the oldest age was 12. And then they also had, did they have wait, is this the hotel where they had teen activities too? But you had to be 13, I think.
SPEAKER_01No. No. That was didn't so.
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay. Sorry. Disregard. So you had to be, you could only be up to 12 to go to the kids' club. And it definitely for our oldest was a little bit boring, 100%.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's geared towards young younger kids.
SPEAKER_00But our our nine-year-old and our six-year-old loved it. They have activities that are included, and then they also have additional activities that you can pay for them to do.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like face painting. Our youngest made like bracelets and necklaces and they got tattoos one day.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Um, and so basically you just go in, you drop them off, and you sign out, you tell them where you're gonna be. You can stay on property or you can leave. We we went to get massages um two different days, actually. And so that was really fantastic.
SPEAKER_01We went there one day, not knowing that we could leave the property.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So we went there, dropped the kids off, and she was like, you know, where are you guys gonna be? And we we were like, Oh, I think we're gonna go get massages. And she said, at the spa or you know, off property. And at that point, we were like, Wait, off property? Like, we we can go off property? And she's like, Yeah, you know, just leave your number and we'll, you know, reach out to you on WhatsApp.
SPEAKER_00But it was I was surprised. We didn't know that we could do that. We were like, surely, surely we have to stay here, right? No, you don't. So the first day we dropped them off. We were gone for like maybe three hours. I don't even think it was that long.
SPEAKER_01I don't think it was that long.
SPEAKER_00We just went, we we took a taxi into like a little town area called Central Street, and there's one zillion massage places. We just picked one and went in and got a one-hour massage each, and that was pretty good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, for like 12 bucks or something.
SPEAKER_00It was very affordable. It was very affordable. And then we just went back because it was hot and we're like, we don't really know what else to do here. So then we just went back and picked them up. And while we were gone, uh the one of the ladies in charge had texted us a picture and said, Oh, they're doing great. They made some friends. So there were definitely other kids that came in and out also. You all oh, you also can choose, can they sign themselves out? Yes or no? And we just wrote, No, none of them can. So that was good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, definitely something we've never experienced before.
Planning Ang Thong Boat Day
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and it was real it was a really nice option to just get away for a couple of hours, you know? And so we took advantage of that twice, actually. The second time we just went and got a like a foot massage, and that's a that's another story that we'll talk about here in a minute, but that also was fine. Um, I think maybe we were gone for like an hour or so. But it's just nice when you're with your whole family for two weeks straight to just get a little break from the kids besides the time when they're asleep, you know, was really nice. So we didn't have any activities booked at all when we arrived in Kosamui. But one of the things that I wanted to do was visit Aang Thong National Park. And this is a national marine park, and you obviously have to take a boat to get there. And so I was telling Dwayne, like, I don't really want to spend the whole day on a boat, but I do want to see this. And I don't want to leave here feeling regret that we came here and we didn't really do anything. So we did. I booked that and we did that. Um, it was a very long day.
SPEAKER_01Very long. And I just want to add that usually we have or you have things planned for our trips. Yes. This one we only had what? The elephants. The elephants. And that was it. Yeah.
Beach Day Turns Into Sunburn
SPEAKER_00So part of it was because I knew we were meeting up with Dwayne's friend, both in Phuket and in Bangkok. And I didn't really know what, you know, to expect to expect or what they had planned or anything like that. And I didn't want to like I didn't want Dwayne to miss out on seeing his friend because I had booked a bunch of stuff. So I was trying to be really cognizant of that. But also I was just tired and I wanted this to be like a relaxing vacation, which, spoiler alert, if you listen to our first episode, it really didn't turn out to be very relaxing because there's something else that happened in Costa Mui that was not ideal. Um, and then some more things happened in Bangkok that we'll talk about next week. But I the vibe I was going for was relaxing. So that's the other reason why I didn't book a ton. But we ended up booking this through Viator. I was actually able to take advantage of an Amex offer for like spend, I don't know, what it maybe$200 and get$50 back or something like that. Maybe it was spent$300, I can't remember. But I was able to utilize one of those offers. So I was like, well, at least we're saving$50, even though this boat tour cost$500 for all five of us. But I think let's back up. Before we talk about the boat tour, we have to talk about the day before the boat tour. Okay. So the boat tour was booked for our last full day in Kosmoui. Okay. So our second to last day, we just were gonna have a chill day. We're gonna go to the beach, uh, not the beach at the Hyatt, but there's a uh much calmer beach you can go to that's like five minutes away. We're gonna go to the beach, we're gonna hang at the pool, we're just gonna relax. That's our plan for the day. We bought some sunscreen at the hotel gift shop. So at the Hyatt gift shop, we bought what appeared to be 60 F SPF sunscreen.
SPEAKER_01$30 later.
SPEAKER_00It was not cheap. Okay. We go to the beach. Uh, the beach that we went to was uh Chong Mon Beach.
SPEAKER_01Sure. Very beautiful beach.
SPEAKER_00It was beautiful, it was calm. We rented two chairs for like 200 bot, maybe.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's really, really cheap.
SPEAKER_00It was not expensive at all. Dwayne um rented a jet ski for about 45 minutes and took the kids all around. That was fun.
SPEAKER_01First of all, I went to go see how much the jet skis were. Um, they told me, and then I was like, Do you take credit cards? And they were like, No. I said, Ugh, I don't have any cash. And he was like, I can take you to the ATM. And I was like, How? He's like, just hop on my moped. I was like, um, maybe. And then I just said F it. I went and got my wallet. Look, this dude that I never saw in my life before, took me on his moped to an ATM, which was right down the street.
SPEAKER_00He was a small man though.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So I feel like you could have taken him had something happened.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, for sure. But yeah, I mean, he I wrote on the back of his moped to and from the ATM machine, paid for these um jet skis.
SPEAKER_00So how much ski? How much was it for 45 minutes?
SPEAKER_01It was$90. It was still expensive, but I mean, you know, that's how they make the money.
SPEAKER_00We were going to go to Pig Island, which is uh basically an island you can take a boat to and there's wild pigs there. But we didn't end up doing that because I didn't want to do two boat things back to back. And because we some of our kids get motion sick, and even I do a little bit. So I just didn't want to do that. So we ended up skipping that, and that would have cost like$250 had I booked that. And it's like people talk about this as like it's a must-do with kids. We were kind of like, uh, like it feels like there's a lot of poop there, maybe, and like, I don't know how clean this beach could possibly be. Like similar to the deer park in Japan, where we didn't love that either.
SPEAKER_01So well, and we had went to the pig cafe in Japan and realized that the pigs were like stressed out. Yeah. And we didn't find out until afterwards.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and we felt bad that we had spent money to do that.
SPEAKER_01So we didn't know if the pigs were gonna be the same way there.
SPEAKER_00Also that, yeah. So we didn't do that. So I'm thinking, well, we were gonna spend 250 bucks to do that. So$90 for this jet ski is really kind of a steal. And the kids were super excited about it. So I didn't ride on it, but they all did. And tell them about the island.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so there was an island like out in the ocean, and he's like, you know, for 30 minutes, you could, depending on how fast you are in this jet ski, you can make it to the island, go around it, and come back, and that would be 30 minutes. He's like, if you're fast, you'll be back in 20. I was like, I'll be back in 20. So me and my oldest get on this jet ski, and we are mobbing, flying. But again, you know, this is the open ocean. So halfway there, we're getting air on this jet ski. Because the the waves were pretty bad. So I decided not to go all the way out there because it was just it was too rocky. So that was we turned around and um we just rode on the little beach there.
SPEAKER_00Um then he came back and picked up our little two and took them together, and we were going just as fast. And what did our daughter say?
SPEAKER_01At one point, our daughter was like, Daddy, can you slow it down? And I thought, maybe I should. Because we were flying on this jet ski.
SPEAKER_00Do you want to tell them what the nine-year-old did when you first took off?
SPEAKER_01I mean, I I don't know why, but he was so excited, he just started barking like a dog. And he was barking like a dog for a good two, three minutes. And I was like, what's going on? But you know, I was I was just mobbing on this jet ski while he's holding on to me barking. So I don't I don't know where that came from, but it was it was pretty funny.
SPEAKER_00Dwayne goes, I'm never gonna forget that as long as I live.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, we're just mobbing on a jet ski and he's just good times, good times.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01Oh so we are, you know, hanging out on the beach, riding jet skis. Yes. We're applying this.
SPEAKER_00I reapply the sunscreen. Yeah, I think that's important to know. And I I am in the shade also. We rented chairs and I have an umbrella over me. So I am completely covered. Our kids are playing in the water, they're playing in the sand, but it's fine. I reapply the sunscreen and no big deal. Then it starts to rain, like, and the weather, here's what we noticed about the weather in Thailand is it turns quick. Like five minutes could go by and it could be completely different weather. So it starts to rain, and so we're like, we're just gonna go back to the hotel. We're super close to the hotel. You know, we're done here. So we call it taxi, a grab, actually, which is how we got around everywhere.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It's Uber.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And we went back to the hotel and then we posted up by the pool. We had lunch by the pool, hung up by the pool for a couple of hours.
SPEAKER_01Yes, all while reapplying sunscreen.
SPEAKER_00Yes. I think I put sunscreen on myself and the kids three times, which is generally plenty. And keep in mind that we live in the desert, okay, and are well familiar with the sun. So we're having a great time at the pool. We uh we go swimming, the water is beautiful, and it's not very crowded. I kept taking pictures and posting them on Instagram, and one of my friends was like, Are you guys the only people at this hotel? Like, where is everybody else? And I was being a little strategic when I would take the photos, but it wasn't that hard because it was not super crowded. So there were definitely people there like at breakfast, but I don't know where they went for the rest of the day. So yeah, it was good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So then later, uh later that afternoon, that was the second time we used the kids club. We dropped the kids off and we just went to get like a foot massage. 30 minutes, that's all we wanted, just something kind of quick. And we do that, and it's fine. And then that night, I realized I am very, very sunburned.
SPEAKER_01I mean, not only you, we all were.
SPEAKER_00We all were. It just was most visible and apparent on me first because I'm the lightest. But our kids don't normally get sunburned. They tan.
SPEAKER_01Neither do I.
SPEAKER_00They tan really well. Um, but I'm still very diligent about applying it on them. So I always apply it, I always reapply it. We're super careful. I ugh, anyways, I was very sunburned. So, and like as the the night went on, we started to realize everyone else was too, including Dwayne, who was the most sunburned I've ever seen him be, actually. But the weird thing is, is that the one piece of me that wasn't sunburned was my face. And on my face, I had put on my regular daily like SPF 50 lotion that I use every single day. And on the rest of my body, I used the sunscreen we got from the hotel. And on everyone else's.
SPEAKER_01So, yes, long story short.
SPEAKER_00We think we had fake sunscreen. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. We don't know what was up with the sunscreen, but it did not work at all.
SPEAKER_00And it definitely wasn't 60 SPF.
Ang Thong Tour Highlights And Warnings
SPEAKER_01So So then, yes, now back to the Aang Song boat trip. Yes. So we are on this boat now. All of us are burnt.
SPEAKER_00But I am so burned that my legs are swollen.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I think that it's because we went and got a massage. And they and I didn't I didn't know at the time that I was sunburned. So I yeah, the the burn plus that was not a good combination at all. Like my legs, it was painful. Like they literally felt like my skin was gonna split when I stood up. That's how bad it was.
SPEAKER_01So, yes, we are now on the boat, damn thong. We're sitting in the shade.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Because we we had to.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I I essentially don't move for a good portion of this boat, right? Because it is painful for me just to get up and walk. So Dwayne does like helps the kids get their food and helps the kids do whatever they need to do, which was really helpful. But we are on this boat for a long time. So it's a big boat. I'll link what we did, uh, the tour that we did in the show notes if you want to do it. Um, but I just need you to be warned that you're gonna spend a lot of time on this boat.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, that it was like a 10-hour day. Yeah. From start to finish. Maybe even longer than that.
SPEAKER_00Um, I think longer because it picked us up at like seven and we didn't get back till like eight. So I think including driving time, about 13 hours.
SPEAKER_0113-hour day, probably 10 hours on this boat trip.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Of those 10 hours, we were probably on this boat for like seven and a half. Maybe seven.
SPEAKER_00Maybe, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So a lot a long time to be on that boat. Yes. Because I mean the the the Aang Thong park was, you know, first far. And the boat was going really slow.
SPEAKER_00Yes, it's a bigger boat, which is nice because you don't get as you don't get seasick like too badly. Ever we all took dramamine and nobody got sick at all, which was great. Uh, we also were kind of posted up in the middle of the boat. I think that helped too. Uh but because it's a bigger boat, the the pro is you don't get seasick as much. The con is it goes slower. So the agenda for the day is you get on, you start your journey, they serve a little breakfast, and you They provide drinks. Yes, and you go to the first stop, which is snorkeling.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You're it's like around lunchtime when you arrive to this first spot. So you go snorkeling, and it was actually great because someone um followed behind our daughter on a raft because it was her first time snorkeling and we weren't sure how she was gonna do. This guy literally swam behind us with a raft.
SPEAKER_01Um pretty big raft.
SPEAKER_00Yes, so that she could get on it if she needed to, and she did. She tried snorkeling and then she got on the raft. And that was, I thought, so kind. So you do the snorkeling, then you have the option you can kind of jump off the second story of the boat into the water if you want, which Dwayne and the boys did that, and then they serve lunch as you're going on to your next stop. And the next stop is you have the option to basically either kayak between these beaches or take a like a dinghy boat. Yeah. We chose the kayaking, which does cost extra, mind you. You also have to pay to get into the park because it's like a national park. So that's also not included in the cost of the tour, and you have to bring cash for that. Uh our my oldest and I, we got in one kayak and Duane took the little two, and he and I made it just fine, but Dwayne was struggling.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I wouldn't I'll never do that again. And I say that just because you know, there's three of us on this kayak. Yes, they're little kids, but I mean, I it felt like I was rowing and rowing and not going anywhere. So I don't know if I just didn't have the technique down or what, but I mean it was a struggle. And we were the last ones to the island or to the other beach from the first beach.
SPEAKER_00It's kind of weird to me because you're so strong that I I feel like maybe you just had a bad kayak. I don't know.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I don't is that such a thing? I have no idea. Like I said, I mean, I thought I was, you know, I had the technique down, but obviously I didn't. But it it took us, like I said, we were the last ones. Like I was still rowing, and Ray and our oldest were like on the beach frolicking for who knows how long.
SPEAKER_00Well, let's be clear. So you you there's two stops. So you you can go you go from one beach to the next and you get out and you stop, and then you go from that beach to the the last kind of beach, and that there's a hike there if you want to do the hike. Uh, we did not do the hike because again, it hurts me just to walk. So being in the water was like the most relief I had all day.
SPEAKER_01And I didn't do the hike because I was struggling to get this kayak to and from each stop.
SPEAKER_00Yes, it's also worth noting that on this at the second go round I see Dwayne coming in the kayak and our our children are not with him. And I'm like, so then I'm asking the guide that's on the beach with us, I go, where where are my kids? And he's like, Oh, they're on the boat. And I'm like, with who? Like, what do you mean they're on the boat?
SPEAKER_01So halfway to the the second stop after kayaking to the first stop. First of all, I didn't I wasn't even gonna kayak, I was just gonna get on the boat and ride to the the last stop. But I said, you know what, F it. We'll do it again. So we do it again and And again, I'm struggling. I'm the last one again. And then this the one of the people, yeah, tour guys comes along with the dinghy who's picking up the people that didn't kayak and taking them to the last stop. And he sees me struggling, and he's he's like, Are you okay? And I'm like, No. He's like, Do you want to get on the boat? And I said, you know, just take the kids. So the kids get on the dinghy. They go and pick up the other people on the beach, take them to the other beach. But you know, then I'm kayaking to the last stop, which again takes me a while. Because now I'm in a three-person kayak. Only one person is in it. So I don't know. I don't know. And I'm like in the back. So the thing is filling up with water. And I'm like, get me out of this kayak. So I mean, I make it after a while, after a struggle. And I'm like, I'm never doing that again.
SPEAKER_00And I'm like, where are our children? Because they are now with zero parents, and they are like on a boat in the middle of the ocean in freaking bottom.
SPEAKER_01Let me just add that you know, the boat came with like six, seven staff who were all great and wonderful. Yes. Like very helpful.
SPEAKER_00Yes. So eventually our little two did come rolling up to this island on the dinghy with other people, but I was questioning that a bit.
SPEAKER_01As soon as I pulled out Ray, I was like, where are the kids? And I can just see it in her face.
SPEAKER_00I was questioning your judgment at that moment.
SPEAKER_01And I was like, I'm, you know, I said F it. I made the executive decision and I threw them on the dinghy. Like they'll be fine. They were fine, but I was like, But you can see, yes, you could see it on Ray's face that she was like, What the F did you do?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So anyway, but mind you, we didn't even talk about this. The views here and the islands that we visited were incredible.
SPEAKER_00Yes. That was the best part of the whole thing. Like a hundred percent. Like the photos don't do it justice. Like it is absolutely beautiful. And I think if you could go on a boat that's a little bit faster, it might be better. Especially if you if you're not prone to motion sickness. That's probably how I would do it.
SPEAKER_01Or if you don't have kids, get on a fast boat.
SPEAKER_00Like, yeah. But yes, it is absolutely beautiful. You are the beaches that you stop at. It's like at one point I have a video of my daughter just like running on this beach, and the only thing that's behind her is this giant mountain and like an abandoned kind of like boat. And it literally looks like she's in this a scene from a movie. Like it was just so beautiful. So 100% recommend. We did see a lot of fish when snorkeling. I didn't see as many as everybody else saw, but the the overall uh gist was that people really enjoyed the snorkeling and it was fantastic. So that part was also great. And the only thing that was kind of disappointing was when you do the kayaking, you're supposed to be able to go into this like underground cave, but it's weather dependent. And it's kind of like very similar to the blue grotto in uh Capri off of uh the southern coast of Italy. Uh like you could only access it at certain times based on the tide. And for whatever reason, we didn't do that. So I'm assuming that it was not accessible to us in a safe way.
SPEAKER_01Water was low choppy.
Night Market Food And Trip Costs
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so that was a bummer. But all in all, good experience. Um, would definitely recommend it if you're, you know, similar to us where you have younger kids that maybe are prone to motion sickness, but you still want to go. Just I would bring some activities to do on the boat. They had a travel connect four game that they gave the kids, which actually was really nice because they spent a good amount of time doing that. And our kids actually slept a couple of times on this boat too. So would definitely recommend though. Um, the other thing that we did in Kosamui was we walked to the night market, or we didn't walk. We took a taxi to first the Big Buddha, and we walked up there, up those steps, which was cool. And then we took a taxi to the night market um at Fisherman's something. I forget what it's called, but if you were to Google it, you would see. And we had dinner there one just one night, right? That was also great. You walk around, you choose whatever you want. Um, you pick a table and you buy a beverage so that you can sit at the table, kind of a situation.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I tried some uh a new to me Thai dish called cow soy. Actually, it was cow soy guy, which guy means chicken. So it was quite good. It's like a northern Thai curry noodle dish with like a braised chicken thing in it, braised chicken leg. And that was quite delicious. And it was like the the food was literally boiling in the pot as he dished it up. And one thing I was a little bit concerned about was getting sick, right, from food poisoning or whatever in Thailand. Even Dwayne's friend who lives in Bangkok was like, it's gonna happen. Like for sure, it it happens to everybody.
SPEAKER_01What do you call it? The revenge of Thailand or something?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he called it bubble guts or something. But yes, the revenge, yes, to something like that. Um, and so I was kind of like that. Was always in the back of my mind as we were eating like street food and stuff, but I literally could see this boiling, and I'm like, well, nothing could be living in there, you know. So, and it was quite good. It was very delicious.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so I mean, I guess in a nutshell, Koisamui, beaches, food, boat tours, boat tours, views.
SPEAKER_00This was my favorite part of our trip.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_00This kind of middle part, despite the sunburn, which was definitely disappointing. As a side note, let me just add people I asked on on Instagram for sunburn like remedies, and people people kept messaging me like ways to not get sunburned. And I was like, guys, like we live in the desert of Phoenix. We travel multiple times a year to warm climates. Like, this isn't a case of like me not being prepared or like not trying to prevent a sunburn. Also, um, check your skin because I had a stage one melanoma removed from my right calf a couple of years ago. So, skin cancer is very much something that I am cognizant about, and I feel like I'm very careful about sunscreen and skincare. Um, and so to have felt like I did everything right and still have everybody get burned was so frustrating. And it definitely impacted our trip because like I couldn't take a bath in those incredible soaking tubs that we had. Um, and like, you know, I couldn't even walk without it hurting, which was frustrating. So it definitely put a damper, but it was still my favorite part.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, we would have got more massages, I think. At least one more.
SPEAKER_00Oh, 100%. Yeah. Yep, for sure. Um, I felt like I didn't people talk about the massages in Thailand and how they're so great. The Thai massage technique is like pretty rough, I think. And I don't necessarily enjoy that. Maybe you do, but I didn't have a massage where I was felt like that was amazing. Did you? Well, we only got two. Um I know, I know. It's a small sample size.
SPEAKER_01And we were we picked the Thai massage.
SPEAKER_00I know also, yes. So like I would not choose that.
SPEAKER_01Like I said, we didn't get burnt, we would have chosen another one, another type. And we, you know, maybe I enjoyed my leg massage, yeah.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, so, anyways, um, all in all, I would absolutely come back here. Oh, you know, the other thing is um Koisamui was cheaper than Phuket, so much cheaper, like significantly. And so wait, where did we get the rolled ice cream? Was that Bangkok and Kuket?
SPEAKER_01That was no Phuket and Koisamui.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so in uh in Phuket we got rolled ice cream for the kids, and it was like nine dollars a cup in Phuket.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and then Kois 300 bot.
SPEAKER_00300 bot and then in Koisamui at one of the markets we went to.
SPEAKER_01It was like a hundred baht, which is three dollars. Yeah. So a third of the price for the same exact ice cream.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So I had read that Pukat was definitely m the most expensive and touristy part of Thailand, and that was absolutely our experience as well. Um, so yeah, Kosamui was significantly cheaper than Phuket.
Koh Samui Airport And What’s Next
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Oh, and one last thing. I want to talk about the airport before we close this up. One of the most unique airports I've ever been to. I'm sure a lot of other small island airports are like this one, but it was all open air. I mean, there was I mean, it would it was just very unique. Um did you get videos of it?
SPEAKER_00I have I have a couple of videos.
SPEAKER_01I put a lot on my story, but no one follows me.
SPEAKER_00One um one thing I've never seen at any other airport but before is again, you you have to check your bag because these planes are small. And so when we left and flew from Kosamui to Bangkok, we checked our bags, and then you have to go and watch this TV and see if your bag that you already checked appears on the screen. And it basically says, like, wait like four or five minutes.
SPEAKER_01Four minutes at this screen to see if your bag and if it does, you have to go see why.
SPEAKER_00I my assumption is there's something in it that they don't like, maybe like a power bank or something like that. Um, but yeah, I've never seen that at any other airport. So we just stood there and waited for our bags, and we were like, okay, we don't see them, so I guess it's fine. But the whole airport is open air, even the gates. Yeah, I didn't love that because it's hot.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But it was a beautiful airport. There's like areas on the grass you can just sit in, which is nice.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, a lot of shops.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It was very, very unique.
SPEAKER_00It was, yeah. Um, and so our next stop is Bangkok. We will cover all of that next week. Don't worry, it's not without drama, um, including an ER visit. So super fun times. Um, but for sure, Kosa Mui was definitely our favorite and would absolutely recommend the hotel.
SPEAKER_01Um great hotel.
SPEAKER_00Would go back again in a heartbeat. So if you have any questions, uh DM me on Instagram. And thank you for listening.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Thanks for tuning in.
SPEAKER_00We will catch you on the next episode.
SPEAKER_01Have a good one.
SPEAKER_00Bye.
