speaking of a little sentiment, what about, uh, Patty Kane coming back to Chicago, winning it in overtime. Just like the story says, Hello everybody. Welcome back to this week's edition of Shoot the Puck. As usual, I'm your host, pat, and as always, Matt is on the other end of the mic with me. So here we are back again, willing and ready, I should say, ready and willing, uh, to break down a couple more, uh, topics that we have here, which, uh, there's, there's some good stuff going on in the NHL right now. So we're bringing you hockey news, notes, rumors, bit of fun all wrapped together. Matthew, how are you my friend?
Matt:Howdy, sir, how are you? Yeah, I really am excited to, uh, crazy weekend for stadium series stuff. So, uh, I think we'll probably dive right off, you know, just start the show off with that. But yeah, there's some, some good topics this week, you know, trade deadline coming up, touch on that, and then some other stuff. We're gonna, we're gonna punch in here, but yeah, stadium series, man. I was, I what man? Whew. Two, two great games. I don't know if you got, got a chance to watch any of it, but, uh, I definitely saw the first one. Saw a little bit of the second one of your, uh, flyers and devils. But yeah, the Islanders and uh, Rangers were, whew, man, hell of a game.
Pat:Great series. Yeah, great game, great series all around. Uh, it was a little, I was a little sour. My flyers came in the, uh, came up in the short end for the,
Matt:Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Pat:It was a good game. Uh, the atmosphere was awesome. I always loved outdoor hockey games. I I, I'll watch any outdoor hockey game you throw at me. I just think the atmosphere is, is cool that, you know, there's juice in the stands, there's all kinds of pregame stuff going on, uh, all, all that kind of stuff. So, and the, uh, the, the weather cooperated. So, uh, great game, uh, great games, I should say. Both, both, uh, were really entertaining and, uh, thought it went off well. And it, it portrayed the sport in a, uh, you know, in a good light, which is all, all you can really, you know, all you can really ask for. So but yeah, I did watch the, uh, Rangers Flyers, obviously being a Flyers fan. It was, it was New Jersey, through and through, right? You had Max, uh, uh, Bruce Springs Sea's drummer. Max, uh, is it Weinstein? I think that's his name. So he, he was kind of, he, he was a little bit of the, uh, you know, he was on the mic and, and a little bit of the host, you know, that kind of thing. They were, they had Bruce Springsteen's like glory days going, uh, over the,
Matt:Yeah. Yeah. Saw that.
Pat:it was awesome. It was the fifth largest, uh, crowd in NHL history. So,
Matt:Nice. Right on
Pat:was, It was awesome. It was a great time. And I think it was, let's see, it's just, uh, 70,000 over, just over 70,000 to MetLife Stadium. And, uh, that was, like I said, fifth largest crowd. It was the largest crowd in their history period.
Matt:Mm-Hmm. Yeah, for sure.
Pat:The largest crowd in Stadium series history and the fifth largest crowd, like I said, in NHL, uh, history. So, uh, it was a fun game. Uh, it was really, it was really good. And, you know, with the, with the devils and Rangers being so close in the standings, it was really, uh, it was important game for, for both teams and, uh, you know, a a bunch of scoring and, and, uh, but it always, uh, always good to see the outside game, uh, grow and, and whatnot. But, uh, yeah, a bunch of stuff. And I, and you know, it was funny because they, uh. The Gaslight Anthem, which is one of my favorite bands of all time. Uh, they played the, uh, they played outside. And, uh, for, for those that don't know, they, the Gaslight anthem ha, uh, part of their song Howl is the Devil's goal song. So they had, they had the Gaslight anthem there playing live. Every time they scored, they would play the chorus of that song to, to have the, uh, the goal song go. And like they scored with like, they scored like two minutes into the game. And like the guys weren't even ready to play the song. Like they had to like, run to their stuff and like quick, do a quick, do a song because they didn't expect'em to score that, uh, you know, that
Matt:That quick. Yeah.
Pat:that was, I thought that was funny. Yeah. But, but, uh, yeah, I thought it was a great, uh, great game, great atmosphere. 70 over 70,000 people. It's like, that's no small feat, you know, that kind of thing.
Matt:Oh yeah,
Pat:but it was, uh, a good, uh, a good time. And I always liked the, uh, they had a little bit of the, you know, their respective states in, in their warmups, right? So the Devils came out, uh, uh, you know, it was uh, they came out in like the Sopranos, like, uh, like tracksuits kind of thing, and they wore
Matt:yeah. Saw that.
Pat:There was like a sopranos feel like it was cool. And then the guys in, uh, the Philly guys got off the bus in like the rocky, like iconic, rocky, like gray sweatsuit and sweatpants kind of thing. So they, they, they came off the bus to doing the rocky things. I always, I always liked that. And, uh, so just to add to the game a little bit. So that was cool. But, uh, so you had the Gaslight Anthem, uh, you had the Jonas Brothers played as well. Uh, that was, I think they played like a, a concert like, I don't know, like 90 minutes before game time or something like that. So, so they had fans in the field and, uh, you know, the, the field and, and, uh, kicking soccer balls, things of that nature. So that was cool. So they had, uh, they had the mascots too, so I forget what the, the devil's mascot is. But obviously you had gritty there from the, from the flyers and they made it fun too, and, and, you know, just kind of, uh, playing it off each other and, and, you know, all game along kind of thing. So it was a good, uh, I thought it was a good one. I thought it was a really good one. And, uh, my guys came at the end of the, end of the, the short stick, I should say. But, uh, it was, it was really cool. And it was yeah, it just, it was good. I thought it was good for the sport.
Matt:Yeah, that's, like I said, I did see the Devil's 1, 6 3. I didn't get to, I was kind of checking in here and there running a bunch of errands, but I watched most of the Rangers Islanders game before. But yeah, it sucks that your flyers couldn't, couldn't get the wind, but you kind of were gonna expecting that Jersey was gonna be juiced up, you know what I mean? Like, that was probably huge for them, obviously. So yeah, they had to come with the bright lights on. Uh, but yeah, I, I saw, I don't know if you got a chance to watch any of that island. Unders, uh, rangers the, the day before. But man, was that a game? Holy
Pat:good one.
Matt:Whew. Yeah. I mean, I thought rangers were kind of dead in the water there'cause they were down. Five, three, I believe, in the third, like early, I think they scored, Islanders scored and it went up five three and it was like, oh man, here we go. Like, I think this is gonna be it. And then next thing I know, I went and did some dishes and ran some errands and I came back and it was five five almost going into overtime. And I'm like, what in the world is going on? I wasn't gone long, man. I was like, whoa. So Rangers put on a clinic there and then, uh, yeah, Panera went and, uh, hit, hit the, uh, OT winner and, and won it for the Rangers in overtime, which was a huge game for them. But yeah. What a, what a game man. Physical battle back and forth. Couldn't ask for a better atmosphere and, uh, a game to be honest. And yeah, both, both games were great. Just hell of a weekend for, for NHL and just Jersey and stuff in general.'cause we talked about it last episode about how much cool stuff they did and involved so many families and people and, and they did a lot of cool things with, you know, with the warmup clothes, like you said, pat, and just a real, a real good time for everybody involved. So yeah, it was, it was, it was good to see. It was a great turnout.
Pat:Yeah, for sure. So yeah, the stadium series always, always is good. Doesn't matter what the teams are. And this, this year's did not, uh, did not disappoint, the other thing I will say they announced, uh, 2025. So next year's stadium series is, is the biggie that, uh, it's gonna be out at Ohio Stadium, right? Ohio, Ohio State Stadium. Uh, and it's going to be the Red Wings, visiting the Columbus Blue Jackets. So that's gonna be a, that's gonna be a monster. I'm, I'm really looking forward to that one outside of Ohio State Stadium. Man, that, that's a big one. So,
Matt:Oh, that's gonna be huge. They, because they could fit a lot of people there too. You, I mean, obviously all the college and NFL games, you know what I mean? Like stadiums I should say. You can fit a ton of people. Mainly college. I mean, I mean, how many times Pat did we go up and we were teenagers and, and you know, early twenties and stuff to Penn State and there's like a hundred thousand people in that stadium. You're just like, what in the world? It's crazy. It doesn't seem like that many when you're there, you know, kind of with everybody and just having a good time. But yeah, then you see it on TV and you're like. Man, is there really that many people? Is that what it looks like? You know, you're like, you forget how many people you're actually with and how many people that, you know, those people can pack that place. It's nuts. So yeah, that'll be a, that'll be a fun time.
Pat:I was just actually looking up, so yeah, we, Matt and I did spend a fair share of time at Beaver Stadium, which Penn State, uh, plays. It's about, it's about three hours west of here. Three and a
Matt:Three. Yeah, a little over three. Yeah.
Pat:Yeah, something like that. It's 106,000 people at Beaver Stadium, so
Matt:go. Yeah.
Pat:you know, that's on the, you that's up there with the Ohio State's, the big house out in Michigan. Right. That kind of thing.
Matt:Mm-Hmm.
Pat:It's in that class of, you know, of,
Matt:Yeah. USC,
Pat:monstrosities.
Matt:you know, real big schools. Yeah.
Pat:So this is the first time Ohio's gonna gonna host a, a stadium series. So that, that's, that's awesome. And, uh, we've talked about it before in the show. The Red Wings are playing some great hockey, so I expect that to. Carry over into next year. Right. So, and Columbus is on a down year. They, they, they haven't been that great this year but they have some, they have some talent and whatnot, so we'll see what they, they can rebuild with. But, uh, yeah, that, that stadium's gonna be awesome. Or I should say that game's gonna be awesome next year in the, out there in Ohio State, uh, stadium. So always looking forward to that. So yeah, another round of stadium series in the books and, uh, was, like I said, it was real entertaining and, uh, just really showed the sport in the best light. And we can't, uh, can't be mad at that. So
Matt:Not at all. Not at all.
Pat:a good time. So and then the other thing too, I wanted to mention, uh, speaking of flyers and whatnot, did y'all see the potential fight of the year that happened? The other, the other day with, uh, Nick deLauer
Matt:How could you, how could you miss? It?
Pat:Oh, there was some haymakers going on there. I thought, oh man, this is a goodie boy. They were, they were slugging, bro. They were just slugging. It was, oh man, it was beautiful. I loved it. I love to see it back. Get that, get that grit back in the game of hockey. I think it's, I think that's what's missing, uh, at least, at least part of it, uh, is missing in today's game is the you know, the, uh, the self-regulation of the, of the game and the league, right. That kind of thing. So, you know, you grew up with, with big, you know, enforcers and that playing that role and things of that nature. And I think really the enforcer today is kind of watered down. It just, uh, you know, Ryan Reeves comes to mind and he's, he throws some haymakers, but, you know, there's not many people that can go toe to toe with Ryan Reeves, uh, in, in today's game with throwing hands. So. You know, but like the old guys, right? Like John Scott, the Devils and, uh, Dan Car, the flyers, and you know, some of those guys, some of the, you know, uh, I use this term Daringly. The goons, right? But they they served a role, they served a purpose and you know, they were there to stick up for the teammates and, and sort of police the game within the game, right? That sort of thing. So, man, but this fight, man, there was some heavy haymakers. And I thought, oh man. And it was, it was a beauty. But I think Rees got like, what, what, what
Matt:Oh, it's insane. 27 penalty minutes in his first, like five games. He's had I think, what, three or four fights already? In his first, yeah, first like four or five games. Like, oh yeah. He's, he's been, he's been the talk of the NHL this past week, obviously, because of all that.'cause he's just, he's like, anybody that wants to scrap, he's like, all right, let's go. You know? Like
Pat:is a
Matt:he's just like,
Pat:big boy.
Matt:oh yeah. Yeah. And you could definitely tell he's got that style to him, you know what I mean? He, like you said, typical enforcer, goon man, you know, and it was pretty crazy. His first, you know, his NHL debut was at that outdoor games and he got a goal and he had that crazy fight. So, man, what a hell of a debut for the kid. I mean, that's, that's unbelievable.
Pat:Yeah, it was crazy. And he, he's, uh, forget, I'm trying to see here. He's a, he's a big boy. But he made his debut in the, out in the stadium series and the, the, like we said, the six five Rangers win over the Islanders. And and then, uh, he went, he scored his first goal against my squad, the flyers. And then in that same game, he went after one of the toughest, if not the toughest enforcer in the NHL and Nick Delore. So, I mean, they, they showed Delore Delore's head after, as he was sitting in the penalty box. The bruise on Delore's, like above his left eye was just, it was almost his whole forehead. I was like, whoa. That
Matt:a good old balloon. On the, on the, on the no
Pat:was wild. And then the Rangers went after, I should say the Rangers face, the blue jackets in Columbus the next day, and he dropped the gloves with what's, uh, uh, is it Matthew? Uh, is it Olivier? Uh, I think, I think that's how you pronounce his last name. Uh, with, he's a scrapper out there in, in, in blue, blue jacket's country. And man, and I'll tell you, he, he got his, he got his hand, he got his ass handed to him in that, in that, in that fight. But man, they just, they, he's just a mo he's a monster of a kid and he just, he throws hands with anybody. But man, like if you look at it, I saw a picture the other day. He had a, his, his left eye is, is all gooned up, man. He's got a good shiner on that
Matt:Yeah. Oh yeah.
Pat:he's only 21. And I thought, oh boy. Like he's in for a for a long ride. But man, it's, it's refreshing to see the, the, the grit and the, and the. You know, fight, come back into the, uh, come into the NHLA little bit. But man, this, this py kid looks like, uh, he can really throw to hands.
Matt:Yeah, absolutely. He looks like, uh, I think it was today or maybe yesterday. I forget what, when I first saw the picture of that black shiner that he has on his eye, he looks like, uh, squints from the sandlot. He's just a good, yeah, yeah, man, it is just like, so funny. Just huge man, just like right underneath his eye and he just smiling and it's just hilarious. But yeah, man, kid's a big boy and the kid comes with, uh, you know, you know, some grit to him and, and it's like, yeah, like you said, pat, we don't see that stuff as much anymore. You don't see players like that too often that come in right off the bat and make that kind of noise, especially, you know, on the fighting and the aggression level. But yeah, I think if he keeps playing, like he is, he's gonna give the rangers a lot of good boost and confidence and get those boys really riled up for the playoffs. I will say though, he, he better be careful though. I don't know, you know, I don't think he can do this. Every single game, you know, like, and have a long career, I should say. cause like you said, pat, you're not gonna win'em all. You're definitely gonna get tuned up once in a while. I know he's a big kid. He's got a lot of energy and, you know, stuff like that. He's young still, but yeah, you, you gotta be careful'cause you don't want to, you don't wanna ruin your playing career too, too early. But man, I do, I really do. Like, I, I like, I just, you know, it's just hard for us, like, we've talked about this before where we're used to seeing guys, like when we were growing up, you know, watching hockey from an early teenage standpoint, like we're used to guys like that all over the league and now it's kind of like, you know, needle in the haystacks, so to say. But yeah, it's, it's, it's awesome that he's bringing this kind of energy and just making this much noise. And he's the talk of the town, you know, in, in the NHL this past like week here. So yeah, we'll see what he keeps doing, you know, next week, like I said, rangers and trade deadline and, and, uh, playoffs are gonna be coming up. If they keep playing well, obviously I think they will be, they'll be fine. But yeah, it's gonna be interesting to see how much noise he's gonna keep making.
Pat:Yeah. Right on. Yeah, so we thought we'd touch on that as well. He is kind of making some waves here in the, uh, in the NHL, but it's always, uh, always good to see a little bit of that grit, a little bit of that sandpaper come back and, you know, it changes momentums of games and, you know, guys get all jacked up and it, it really can, uh, it really can. Can, like I said, change the momentum of the whole, of the whole game and, you
Matt:Yeah, absolutely.
Pat:that. So, uh, always, always enjoyed that piece of it. I, you know, you understand the dangers of it, and you, you're right, I, he, I don't think he's gonna go out there every night and try to look to, look to goon somebody up. But, you know, it's, there's, there's definitely things that are missing and that, that piece has been heavily missing in the last, uh, couple of years in the, in the hockey world. But, uh, totally understand the, you know, the vocations of it, if you do it long enough and, you know, all that kind of stuff. So, totally get it. And then speaking of that, I was at the flyers game Thursday. Uh, what, what's today? Today is Thursday the 29th. Uh, I was at the flyers game Tuesday night against the,
Matt:Yeah, yeah,
Pat:the lightning in a suite. Nonetheless, it was
Matt:yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Pat:it.
Matt:That's awesome.
Pat:For those that, dunno, I'm in the IT industry, so. Uh, a vendor took us out. A vendor has a box, uh, suite, uh, whatever you wanna call it at, uh, the Wells Fargo Center where the, where the fly guys play. So they invited us and we ate and drank and all this kind of crazy stuff. And then watched, watched the game. So that was always, uh, that was always a fun little treat to go and, and hang and, uh, watch him watch some hockey, uh, live. I haven't been to a flyers game and I, I couldn't tell you how long. So that was, that was nice to get back there and, and hang out. We used to go, I used to go every, you know, probably once a year.'cause I worked, I previously worked for a company that had ice seats, like literally seats right on the ice. And it was like, it was like the away bench, the backup goalie, the the pane of glass. And then it was the first four seats. Off of the away goalie that, or the back of goalie, that, those, those were the seats we used to sit in. It was right at ice level. It was, it was awesome. We had a great time. And then, uh, we used to get the, we usually got to pick our game, right? The one, the one we wanted to go to. So I always picked a rivalry game, right? Uh, Bruins, penguins, rangers, something, you know, something that had a little jump, a little grit, you know, in that game. And it was, it did not disappoint. It was awesome. But, so I haven't been back in a long time, but it was fun. And it kinda, it was fun, don't get me wrong. But they lost. So the Wells Fargo Center lost power for half of the building. Only
Matt:Oh, what
Pat:I wanna say, like, probably like seven or eight minutes into the first period. And you could see it, it's almost like somebody split the Wells Fargo Center in half, like the left side didn't have any, didn't have any lights, no power, no nothing. And the right side was all lit up. Like it was a regular, like, it was a regular game. So I think that was like seven or eight minutes into the first period that we just kind of, our sweet lights are, were off. You know, everything. It was just like everything. It was just like, oh, okay. Uh, TVs were off, scoreboard was, was off, like the whole scoreboard above Wells Fargo Center was dark. So like all the scoring in there, like we had no, we had no we had no public announcer, so like when people scored, you had no idea who scored penalties. You have no
Matt:like a high school game.
Pat:yeah, it was wild. And I was just like, oh, what the hell? And then it took them, I wanna say, early into the third period to get all that stuff back. It was, it was pretty crazy.
Matt:wow. It's a decent amount
Pat:apparently there was an issue outside, like there was more than just Wells Fargo Center that was affected.
Matt:Yeah, I was gonna say, it had to have been like a transform blue, you know, a blow or something. Something, something. Yeah. It had to have been something huge.
Pat:So that was cool. Uh, well, it was, you know, it was interesting to kind of, you know, have a game in that, you know, uh, in that capacity. But, uh, we still had fun nonetheless. And, uh, fly Ice came out with a six two win, so I can't, uh, can't be too mad at it. But, uh, and I got gritty. I got gritty earmuffs. That was the giveaway that night.
Matt:Good old,
Pat:was regular earmuffs, but they were furry and orange, and it was like, yes, this is what I came for,
Matt:Nice. You better watch your whole, uh, your daughters don't get ahold of those.
Pat:That's Yeah, exactly. Yeah, they're, yeah, exactly. They're earmuffs. Yeah, exactly. But but yeah, it was, it was a fun time. I always loved live hockey is, I think is, is one of the best things you can do sport wise. It's just, it's just so cool. Matt, you, you were outta Penn's game, uh, last year, right? When you went out to Pittsburgh? I.
Matt:yeah. Back in November we touched it. Uh, touched on it like one of the first episodes, but yeah. Yeah, they won against the saber and it was cool. That was my first time ever out there. And, uh, pat, I actually think the last game I five, I've only been to like two flyers games that haven't, you know, obviously haven't been pens, but I think when you had like an extra ticket or one, one or two times, you know, you're like, oh, my buddy bailed or whatever. Couldn't make, he's like, you wanna go? You were like, you want to go with, I don't, you know, just come with, I just want somebody to go with. So I was like, all right. Hockey, I don't care. You know what I mean? Like, I'm a Penguins fan, but I don't give a shit. I'll go. So I remember, I think the last time we went and it was the last game of the season, and I forget what year this is, somebody will have to, to check it, but, uh, pretty sure it was the last game of the season or one of the last games of the season. And it, and, uh, flyers were playing the Rangers and this game, whoever won this game got into the last seat of the playoffs.
Pat:to the playoffs.
Matt:And I remember saying to you in the parking lot, I was like, I smell a flyer's OT wind today, and you just look at me. You're like, yeah, right. And I was like, I was like, watch, I'm telling you. And I think they actually ended up winning in the OT or shootout or something like that. And I, we were just like going nuts. But it was so, it was a fun time, but, and I was, every time somebody was like getting a little chippy, I'd just yell from the top of the stadium, drop the gloves. And I think one time actually, the fight did break out and we were all, we were all going nuts in our section, a bunch of us. It was funny, but yeah, it was the last time I, yeah, it was like eight, nine years ago at least, probably so. But yeah, it's always a good time down there. But man, that sucks for your first experience in a suite, you know what I mean? With your, with your job and stuff. And then you don't even get to enjoy any of the amenities that they're, that are providing for you. That's a bummer.
Pat:It was, it was now it was fun though. We, like, they had all kinds of food there and it was still hot. It's just the lights weren't like, you know, the overhead lights and the heat lamps and stuff weren't on, but like, they had like pizzas and wings and, uh, they had like the cheese steaks, uh, uh, stuff. They had, they had, uh, pretzels. They had like, you know, chips. They had all kinds of beer and soda. And it was, it was cool, man. We had a, we had a great time. It was awesome. And you can't argue that. So yeah, always, uh, always fun to get to a, uh, to a live hockey game. Uh,
Matt:Highly recommended.
Pat:highly recommended. Yes, I agree. Uh, speaking of a little sentiment, what about, uh, Patty Kane coming back to Chicago, winning it in overtime. Just like the story says,
Matt:Oh man. It's like, it's like it was written form, like on a platter, man. That was incredible.
Pat:it was awesome.
Matt:Just typical, like classic Patty Kae, breakaway OT on the stick. Just have, and you know, he is gonna bury it nine times outta 10. You know, it's like, you know, it's like him Sid Ovy, like those top guys are just not gonna miss most times, you know? Yep. And it was just like unbelievable. And even it was in Chicago and like, I don't know if you heard it, pat, I watched a clip and it like. Kind of sounded like almost like a home game. Like a lot of people were cheering when he buried that thing. And I think even after when the game was over, he came back and, you know, did the old wave and just skated around the rink and yeah, the crowd was going nuts for him. But yeah, uh, it was pretty crazy to see. But did you see after he was, he was kind of joking around, uh,'cause Bedard gave him a good, uh, a good little, uh, knock and he was like, yeah, yeah, yeah. He, he checked him in and he and Patty Ka, he's lucky he had that, uh, little rubber feast MAs guard on. I would've laid him out or something like that, you know, he was goofing around, but it was hilarious. Yeah. But man, yeah, you couldn't have, uh, couldn't expected anything else, you know, anything else from him. It is just unbelievable. But man, what a season for him in Detroit. You know, they're kind of making some noise now and we kind of figured, we talked about that earlier, you know, like veteran guy, one of the best to ever do it, you know, if he can't get his guys riled up and, and get your head in the game. I don't know who else can.
Pat:Yeah. It almost feel like that scenario, what happened with Patty Kane and Barry in the overtime winner against his old club, it almost feels like the game is fixed when stuff like that happens.'cause you're just like, nah, there's no way
Matt:how does this
Pat:scenario can happen and here we are. And he buries it and just absolutely,
Matt:Mm-Hmm.
Pat:just, it's insane. I'm just like, man, this sport has to be fixed. Right? It has like, they do it for ratings and it's just like, nah, you know, whatever. But it's just, man, it makes you think and it's just like, man, what a, what a return. And I, I watched the, uh, I watched the, uh, the tribute they did to Patty Kane on the, on the overhead
Matt:yeah, It was cool. Saw that too.
Pat:was really well done, man. That was really well done.
Matt:Well deserved too.
Pat:he means to that city is just, is unbelievable. Like the stuff the, the, the, the, the, the cups that they, that they know, or he, and Tves and Dunking Keith and all those guys brought to that city will just, he, he won't, he'll, he'll never buy another beer in that city again no matter what team he's on. So you know, it's just, it's so, it's so crazy and it's just, it, you know, good for him coming back there, getting the love that, you know, he certainly deserves. And one of those cups was in 2010 against my flyer, so I'm a little. You know, I, I can hold, I can hold a grudge against him for that. But everything
Matt:Remember
Pat:just, he's unreal. He's unreal. It's so crazy. But yeah, he just, he absolutely buried it. And I'm just like, man, what a, what a storybook ending to this, like, to that whole thing. Just crazy. But but Yeah. you're right. It was like a, it was like a home game. Like he buried that shot and the crowd went crazy. And I'm like, you have to have something special to have that, like, to have an a, a away player or an opposing player beat you in overtime and your home fans just go crazy. Like, know what I mean? It's just
Matt:yeah, yeah. Not many people can, can do that, for sure.
Pat:No. No, absolutely not. That was, that was cool. But I am interested to see where Detroit goes, man. They are just on an absolute heater. They just, they just beat the capitals the other night. Like they embarrassed the capitals.
Matt:Yeah.
Pat:it was like, was it seven to seven to one or seven to two, something like that. They just, they wiped the floor with the caps. I'm trying to find that score. Oh, eight to three. It was eight to three.
Matt:Whoa.
Pat:man, that's like a baseball score right there, bro. Like, you know,
Matt:Yeah. That's unbelievable.
Pat:just crazy.
Matt:3. Whew, man.
Pat:Yeah. Two in the first, uh, and then three in the second, three in the third. Just murder in the caps. Right. They were, that's, uh. They beat the caps for their sixth straight win. So man, man, red Wings, man. They got some, they got some juice, they got some, they got some grit over there. They're playing some good, some good hockey. So
Matt:Yeah, I, I said that in one of the earlier episodes I said that like right when they first got Patrick Kane and Dylan Lar was having, you know, we talked about him before, how great of a season he's having, and to brink it and just man those. And now I feel like Kane was kind of like the little missing piece of the puzzle that they needed to kind of make them, you know, who knows? Give them a little playoff boost, man in here. That's, yeah. If, if they end up making an end, uh, and finishing out pretty strong like they are, man, they could definitely make some noise for sure.
Pat:Yeah, they're on a six game win streak and they're 16, four and two since January 1st, since the new year.
Matt:Yeah.
Pat:That's insane,
Matt:Yeah. It's, it's, it is, it
Pat:man. They don't call it hockey town for nothing, man. They are, they're, they're, they're back, man. They're just, they're
Matt:Got Patty, Showtime, Showtime, and up in there, man. He's showtime and up and in there.
Pat:man. But yeah, just crazy. It's crazy going on.
Matt:It's kind of a bummer though, like, you know, Jonathan, TAs kind of just like disappeared, right? Like last couple years. Like, I thought maybe like you didn't, he kind of just like vanished, like didn't really, you know, was always kind of battling injury and like the hawks, you know, like hung onto him forever. And then like, I saw like. Earlier, you know, the, when this past season, like started this season that we're now it was saying like he, uh, he's ba I guess battling some really bad long-term covid stuff. So he wouldn't, he said, he's like, no, I can't play in 2020. You know, I guess he, you know, maybe he, maybe he got some calls and stuff to try and give it one more Alaska go.'cause he is like 35 or 36, somewhere around there. So I think, you know, hey, maybe some teams called him and he was like, yeah, no, but from some of the stuff that I was reading, yeah, he just kind of vanished'cause of health problems. And then he had covid and now he's got that long-term covid where he just doesn't have the wind anymore and just, I guess can't, can't lace him up and hang with the, you know, hang to the professional level anyway. But yeah. What a bummer.'cause TAs is always such a freaking man. Him and him and Kane were the one two punch back in that time, you know?
Pat:Mm-Hmm.
Matt:So yeah. What
Pat:Yeah, it's crazy. It is. Yeah. It's just wild. But although they are, oh, they just tied it up in, uh, uh, Detroit just tied it up with the islanders. It's two, two early in the third. So
Matt:Yeah. A bunch of games
Pat:if they can extend their wind streak here. So,
Matt:Yeah, we'll see. But yeah, good for him. Good for Patti Kane coming back, showing him how it's done.
Pat:for sure. Yeah, for sure. Lemme see here. So then, uh, that leads us to oh, hang on. Another absolute whirlwind of a human being in Austin. Matthews. Like, what? Like I just, we talk about him all the time, but I just can't, I can't stop talking about him. Like the dude is just that, the dude is just that good.
Matt:Isn't talking about him this season? With this season he's having so far? I mean it's just incredible.
Pat:he's unreal.
Matt:Just 52 goals in 57 games so far. Obviously leading
Pat:unheard of.
Matt:Yeah. Like obviously leading number one. And then he had, last week he had back to back hat trick games. Again, one of them against your flyers and then the
Pat:I guess The flyers.
Matt:and then two nights later against Anaheim. And then he, and then he was still rolling, had one against St. Louis, had another two against Arizona, had another one against Vegas. The last two games, he hasn't had a goal, but I'm, I'm sure he'll, he'll, he'll bury one, you know, within the next night or two or whatever, you know, next time they play. But, whew, man, that's, that's incredible to have that many goals in, you know, a little over half the season. Right. You know, like, that's, that's pretty, that's pretty impressive, man. He's having a hell, hell of a run.
Pat:Like, I just don't, I just don't understand how people, some people are that good at their jobs. I mean, take hockey out of it. He's just, he's incredibly good at his job. It's just his job just ha happens to be h happens to be hockey, which is just insane.
Matt:yeah. I, but I tell you what, pat like. Toronto always kind of has that dark cloud over them in the playoffs, right? Like they usually never get outta the first round. And if they, I think they just did for like the first time ever, like maybe what last season or the season before they got to like the second round and that was it. Like they always have this such great season success. Kind of like same thing with Tampa Bay years ago, you know what I mean? Before they won their back-to-back recently, you know, it was like the same thing for them every year. And the capitals too, you know, these number one teams are winning 55, 60 games a year and they're just steamrolling people and then they get into the playoffs and, and all of a sudden they just fall flat. Yeah, they lay a dud maybe because they put too much into that season and then you tire your guys out. You know what I mean? So to speak. Who knows on, on the strategy on that, but yeah, but it's just crazy that I can't believe that he is scoring at just will practically
Pat:Yeah. Yeah.
Matt:just like
Pat:Oh, by the
Matt:unbelievable.
Pat:to reverse, to go back a second, the person that scored the Red Wings, uh, took game time goal 10 seconds into the third period. Patty Kane,
Matt:Patty came. Nice.
Pat:he just buried one that was, yeah, yeah, exactly. Exactly. Yeah. But Austin Matthews, I just can't, I can't get over how good he is. Like he's just, and you watch him and it's just like, the game just comes so easy to him. I just, I don't understand, just. The, the level of skill that these guys have, right? Austin Matthews, Connie McDavid, David Postdoc, like all these guys are just, they're incredibly good at what they do and it just makes, the rest of it just seems unfair at this point. Like, like think of that 52 goals in 57 games. Like that is just wild to me.
Matt:Yeah.
Pat:It's
Matt:Yeah. I.
Pat:I just, I mean he's obviously a strong candidate. If he has to be the leading candidate for the heart trophy, it has to be, they're like, there's, I, it doesn't make any sense. I, you know, I would say him, uh, Nathan McKinnon, uh, Nikita Koff from Tampa Bay and you know Mick David, those are probably the big four.'cause those guys just are just unreal talents and they just score almost at will. You know, that kind of in today's game you know, those would be my four. Say guesses for, for who's, you know, for, for the Heart trophy, which is, you know, obviously the top,
Matt:Yeah.
Pat:uh, scoring the trophy for the top score in the league. So but yeah, I just, just watching him play and just watching him just do his thing, it's just like, it's just, it, it's unfair. I'm just like, we we're just living in a simulation and he's like pushing the buttons. Like it's just, it's just unreal.
Matt:mm-Hmm.
Pat:He's just like, what is happening out there? But yeah, I'm very excited to see what he does the rest of the year and man, he can, he can, obviously, he can shoot the puck and he just, he just makes it look easy.
Matt:Yeah, uh, I'm kind of curious to see like what he's gonna finish out at. Obviously there's still like a decent amount of hockey, you know what, 30 probably what, 57 games, so, yeah. Like what, 25 or whatever games left. Uh, but yeah, so I was curious. I'm like, man, what's the, what's the season record? Like, what's the goal per, you know, like the biggest one? And I looked it up here. And guess who's number one and two for, for the, well, actually the top two spots, it's the same person. Obviously. You could probably guess who it is, but I, I'm just astonished at this. So Gretzky has number one and number two record. First one was 81 82, season, played 80 games, 92 goals. And then his second, he's on, he's right, you know, number two again. And then 83 84, season 74 games played 87 goals. So he played six less games and only scored five less goals in like that next season. Like just, but just to get up to 90, almost a hundred goals in a season. Like, yeah, his man, if you even look like just across all sports, like his statistics is just like, uh, you know, almost untouchable. I mean, hey, we talked about Obie. He might, he might shatter that one, you know, in the next year or two if he, if he does keep playing, which I'm sure he will. But yeah, just all, just gretzky's stats are just insane to look at. If you ever get a, if you ever get a chance, just look'em up.'cause it just blows your mind.
Pat:Yeah, he's off the charts. He's absolutely off the charts. I, you know, I just a side note here, I, I like him on the he does the, well he used to, I, I think he still
Matt:TNT sometimes with the boys,
Pat:I haven't seen him in a while, but he was on TNT for a while for their Wednesday night hockey. They do, they do back to back hockey, uh, games Wednesday start at seven Eastern. And then, you know, they have a seven o'clock game and then a 10 o'clock game, so they do back to back and they're, you know, the other mission guys are in the middle. So like who is it there? It's Gretzky. It's, uh, biz joins them every now and then.
Matt:Sue Ban sometimes, I think. Right? I think he
Pat:Uh, Henrik, uh, Quist joins him. I've seen him, but, you know, uh, uh, Liam UE does, does, you know, he is, is the main guy and the rest of'em are kind of color, uh, you know, color commentaries or whatever. So you have, you have a bunch of people come in there, but I like, I like Gretzky. I think he's I. He seems super humble for like just a guy that has absolutely blown the doors off of a sport and has
Matt:Oh yeah.
Pat:record known to man. Like he's super humble about it, which I, which I appreciate. So I like, I like TNT and the way they, they cover it. Brian Boucher is on there sometimes, uh, you know, flyers goalie and now turn commentator. So he's on there. I, I, I like him. I'm not a fan. This, this is just a tangent, but I'm not a fan of the ESPN crew that does hockey. Like I, I like oh, what's his name? The main guy there, and then Mark Messier is the color guy. And then they have PK Suan sometimes too.
Matt:That's where I saw ESPN.
Pat:Yeah, I forget, uh, is it Steve Levy, I think is the, is the main guy. Uh, and then it's, yeah, Steve Levy, mark Messier, and then PK SueAnn. To me, SueAnn is just way over the top. I can't even, I can't even watch it. Like he's just, he's over the top for me. He's just like, uh, like he's worried about everything but the hockey game, it's like, what are they wearing? What are their clothes? Do they match? Do they, it's just like, dude, this is just, it's too much. I can't do it. It's just like, where's, you know, gimme the radio or, you know, I'll just watch it on mute. But it's just like, man, that's just, it's too much. But anyway, that's a side note, but I, you know, there, there's not a lot of hockey coverage here.
Matt:Bring back Doc.
Pat:yeah. Doc Emrick all the way, that's what come
Matt:Best. Best of all time.
Pat:that's right.
Matt:Hands down. Don't at me. I don't
Pat:That's right. That's right. But yeah, I just, there's not a whole lot of hockey coverage'cause uh, like, you know, like I said, ESPN has it now, and TNT has their Wednesday nights. But that's, and then outside the NHL network, which obviously is hockey all the time, really, nobody really, like, no other, uh, stations really touch it. So you kind of have limited sort of choices in that in that NHL realm. Uh, I personally,'cause I, I don't have cable, so and I can't get my, my Flyers games'cause it's on'cause Comcast are,
Matt:Yeah. Blackout. They're stupid rules. Yeah. Same thing with the pens here. It's like annoying.
Pat:yeah, it's so dumb. Uh, so I, I normally can't watch flyers unless they're on national tv. Or like, like a TNT or, or ESPN, you know, game kind of thing. So I usually listen to it on the radio, which I, I, there's something I appreciate about a radio, uh, like listening to a sports game on a radio. Uh,
Matt:Gives you a little more hype,
Pat:yeah, a little something
Matt:more excite, more excitement.'cause you can't see the plays, you know what I mean? So I think that's why it's like, oh man, it's a play by play. And then you're hearing it. It's like you hear the crowd go wild and commentators are all jacked up and you're like, oh my God, what's going on?'cause you can't see. So it just, yeah, it does add an element of excitement for sure.
Pat:Yeah. And you can usually hear the crowd go crazy before the announcers say goal. So you always have to listen for that, like half a second, you're just like, oh, did he score? Always score? You know, that kind of thing. But uh, yeah, there's something about listening to sports on, on a, on radio that I just, I, I really appreciate. Uh, I, I think, I think the best aspect of that is a baseball game. I love a baseball game on the radio. There's just nothing like it. But hockey is a second close. And n if N NFL's okay, I can, you know, kind of take it or leave it, but, but usually I can get, uh, NFL'cause that's, you know, national stuff. So it's no big deal. but but yeah, that was just a sidetrack. I, I'm not a fan of Sue band. He just, he just takes it a little too far and I'm just like, dude, just,
Matt:Yeah. He gets annoying.
Pat:Just
Matt:Talks too much sometimes. Yeah.
Pat:Yeah. Just like no one cares, like just
Matt:Yeah. Just yapping for nothing.
Pat:he just yaps and just like, dude, just move it, keep it moving.
Matt:Yeah.
Pat:so yeah. So yeah, so I always find I always find that stuff, uh, interesting, uh, depending on which, which kind of, uh, uh, broadcast you kind of, you know, turn into. But yeah, Austin Matthews is just, he's just another breed and I, I can't wait to see what he ends with, uh, this year.'cause it's just who he is on pace to just
Matt:Yeah.
Pat:records, just absolutely annihilate them. It's how do you have, how do you have two games at back to back? Or was it back to backer the same week you had a hat trick
Matt:Back to back.
Pat:goals in two games. You're
Matt:Yeah.
Pat:It's
Matt:Nuts. Just absolutely nuts.
Pat:just insanity. So yeah, so that's always two. And then the big one, the big one, the big, the big shebang of this episode is the trade deadline as we are coming up on it, my friends. Uh, today is the 29th. It is a leap year. This year, the 29th of February. There's one extra day in February. Yeah. This is the 29th. The trade deadline, I believe is next Friday, the eighth, if I'm not mistaken. And there's been a few trades. Here and there. Nothing too, too crazy, but we're still a little ways out. But by the time you guys hear this episode, the trade deadline will be in a few days. So I'm interested to kind of dive in a little bit to see what's been going on so far and some of the, some of the news and notes and, and, uh, rumblings, if you will, of the, uh, of the trade deadline.'cause it just, it's, uh, it's very interesting to me. Who makes moves at the trade deadline and who, who kind of stays, stays put? I mean, from a flyer's perspective, right? They, they've overachieved this year, they've absolutely done way better than anyone expected.
Matt:Oh, absolutely.
Pat:personally, I don't think they're gonna make too, too much of a splash. They're, they still have young kids that are growing, right? And I think they want to give them a taste to that. Playoff atmosphere or what it's like to get down that stretch to, to run for a playoff game? They probably will. They have one too many defensemen, well, I, I don't know about now'cause I think they got Jamie Drysdale on ir week to week. But but I, the, the names I'm hearing from a flyer's perspective is, uh, Sean Walker who, uh, they, they have one too many demon in the room is they usually do 11, 11 forwards and seven defensemen a night, which is not the, it's not the traditional pairing. You usually 12 and six. Right. So so they have all these defensemen that they have to play right. That kind of, or at least rotate through. So they do 11 and seven. And then just a forward does, does a double shift, right. So so yeah, so the, probably Sean Walker is probably the, the, the, the most, the. You know, the, uh, I'm losing my words, the, the, uh, the hottest candidate I should say, to, to be moved. But we'll see. But yeah, they have a bunch of young kids that, uh, you know, get this, uh, get the, the playoffs stretch under their belts and see what you know, see what happens. But I, I don't see a huge uh, I don't see a huge moving trade deadline for, for the flyers. But your penguins could be a little different. I, I get, you know, we, we've said this before, right? Your penguins are a little longer in the tooth, right? You still got Crosby, Malkin, LA Tang. Those, those three guys have been around for a fucking decade plus. You know, who knows what's, what's, what's going on there? Maybe a goalie for you guys, like a Tristan Jari or Kovich, right?
Matt:yeah. One of them being moved. The big one is, is Jake Genzel. I touched on it last episode. Denzel's. Yeah. I really don't wanna see him go'cause I've loved him and Sid's chemistry throughout all these years, but you know, he's gonna be a, a free agent next year and, and Kyle Dubas has gotta start making some moves here.'cause Yeah, I, I, I don't really see, unless the pens really get on a hot streak and somebody else, I mean, you know, we've talked about it before a million times, that that division is so tight, so you never know. I mean, there's still 30, you know, 25 games, but, you know, shit happens. Right. You know, but they, they just, yeah. Their power plays one of, they're probably like, almost, almost last in league, one of the worst power plays. Don't know how Todd Reardon still has a job. We're us Pittsburgh, US Pittsburgh fans are really still trying to figure that out. We're dumbfounded. And yeah, I talked about before Sullivan could also be on the hot seat. So we'll see. But yeah, I think, and, and also possibly now that you know, Brian, Russ got hurt for months, right? He's out for a while and now same thing. He's coming up too on contract I think pretty soon. So who knows, maybe, maybe Dubas will try to move him as well. I don't think he was on the trade deadline until, you know, he just got hurt and uh, yeah. So we'll see. But yeah, I feel, I feel bad for Sid man'cause he's having such a hell of a year and it just doesn't seem like nobody else really cares too much other than him. Like I, I've always been a great Malkin fan, but power play just looks abysmal man. It's just like this typical pass it 40 time and then let's just rip a a one timer and then it just. Hits off the glass and then it goes floating all the way down to the other end, and it's just like the same song and dance. There's no like line movement, there's no like switching things up. Like I don't, I don't, I don't get what the coaching's doing. I, I, you know, it doesn't seem like they're trying to, to do too much, to be honest.'cause if your power play's been that bad all season, do something. You know what I mean? Like, you gotta fix it. Especially with, it's not like you don't have the, the offense to do it. You know what I mean? Like you got. You know, we've talked about it before, like we've, you've got all the pieces to the puzzle there, right? It's not like you're, you know, one of these really terrible teams, you know, that doesn't have any firepower. That'd be a totally different story, but you got the talent and it's just like, yeah, just things aren't clicking. But yeah, we'll see what happens with them. I also did see, uh, mark Andre Flury said, he's not leaving, uh, in Minnesota. He's gonna just ride it out. He said, this is my team, you know, this is my year. And then I think after this, after this year, he'll float off into the unset and enjoy his retirement. But, uh, yeah, I don't know. We'll see what happens. But yeah, I don't, I don't, I don't see, I don't see, other than that, eh, who, who knows what the pens will do. But yeah, it'll be interesting to see up in this next week coming up.
Pat:Yeah, it's interesting. I think Genzel is, I think he's out until mid-March. I think he's got an upper body injury or
Matt:Lot of injuries this season Two
Pat:yeah, so I'm curious if somebody takes a flyer on him or at least. You know, tries to trade for him or whatever. With that, you know, with that, uh, with that injury. So that's very interesting to see what that lands. But I like from the goaltending perspective, right? I could probably, I could see like, I would say like teams like Toronto, Carolina, Colorado, you know, uh, we talked about forever ago Edmonton with their goalie struggles, like,
Matt:Yeah, even
Pat:been a little more solid now, Jersey, Yeah.
Matt:Recently, you know, with their, with their struggles in, in goal
Pat:Yes, I could see one of those teams, you know, trading for a a, a Tristan Jari or you know, Kovich and they could pay a price, right? They could pay a pretty price. You know, goalies don't normally tend to go for a lot of high dollars in this league, but, you know, it's, it's very, uh,
Matt:Short lifespan.
Pat:after position for sure. And, you know, obviously you need, you need that for sure. So very interesting to see what happens. Uh, what happens there. Another one that's on the high radar is Noah Hannifin out in uh, Calgary for the, for the Flames. That, that, you know, he's a, he's a big one, uh, that has shown a lot of, uh, trade interest, right? That, uh, that kind of thing. I could see, you know, there's, uh, apparently there's like four teams or so that could, that, that have, uh, interest in him. I don't have what those four teams are, but obviously with the, you know, with the trade deadline, you're not, you try to keep some things close to the chest as you can, right? You wanna make that too too public. But yeah, Noah Hannafin is a big one. As far as uh, as far, I think he's the defenseman, if I'm not mistaken for, you know, landing, a, landing, the big defenseman. So we'll see, see what happens with that as well. The one, the one trade that did happen Chris iv, I
Matt:Chris Tiv. Yeah, that was the big one today.
Pat:went to the stars, right?
Matt:Yeah. Yep. From Calgary to the Stars. Yep.
Pat:That's right. Calgary to the Stars. So that, that's interesting. Uh, getting him, it kind of started that domino effect and I think that sets some of the, I think that sets the table for some of the NHL trades that are gonna come up, at least for defenseman, right? Him being a, him being a defenseman, uh, that sort of sets the table for money and, and whatnot. That is that first, uh, that first domino, right. Uh, to, to fall.
Matt:Get the ball rolling.
Pat:of the, yeah, the rest of the trades around defensemen will, will kind of follow, you know, in that, in that footstep depending on, you know, how teams see, you know, Hey, is this person better or worse than Chris tanf? Right? That kind of thing. So you know, kind of going there. So,
Matt:Yeah. They traded him for a, uh, traded him to the stars for a 2024, uh, second round pick, and then a conditional 2026 third round pick on a prospect. So yeah, it could pick up for them.
Pat:Yeah, that's that's very, uh, that's very interesting. Yeah. Uh, 2024 second round pick, and a conditional 2026 third rounder. Interesting. So, yeah. Oh, it also says here that, uh, the flames are retaining 50% of 10 E's cap hit in salary.
Matt:Oh, okay.
Pat:uh, the stars are really only paying him half. Right. Paying him 50%. So, which is, which isn't a terrible deal, uh, for them.
Matt:yeah.
Pat:Like I, said, Tav, he's, you know, he was in demand, uh, he said,
Matt:yeah, he was higher up there. One of the, one of the good defensemen on the, on the trading block, or, you know, should, like I said, he was on the lookout. Definitely. Teams were looking out for him'cause they knew, you know what I mean? So.
Pat:for sure. So yeah, like I said, he kind of sets the market for the defensemen, you know, going forward. He was number two on, on the, on the big board, right? Uh, for, for defensemen right to, to move. So, uh, very, uh, interesting, uh, turn of events there. And so, uh, I just have to kind of throw this in there. The, the San Jose Sharks who are just awful this year,
Matt:Yeah. Whew.
Pat:there is not good hockey going out there and out there in San Jose. They're they, they're, they, they could be looking to sort of offload and just starting over and, you know, I don't wanna say fire sale, but, you know, getting rid of what they can and see if they can start rebuilding.
Matt:Start from scratch.
Pat:yep.
Matt:that's a, dumpster fire.
Pat:Mario Ferrara being one of the big names to, to potentially look for, right. That kind of thing. So it's very interesting. He's got two years, I think left on his deal. And he's a 3.2, uh, million dollar cap hit, uh, for that. So, uh, it's very,
Matt:Okay.
Pat:it's very interesting. He, he's, he, from the little that I've watched San Jose, uh, he seems to be a, and especially Mario Ferrara, uh, he seems to be a smooth skating, uh, you know, puck moving kind of guy. And obviously he, he throws the body around a little bit. So he is a little bit of a banger, which is, which is
Matt:Hey. Yeah, never bad thing.
Pat:no, so so it's, uh, interesting and then, you know, so like the whole idea of the trade deadline is trying to get rid of who you can for the best return, right? So they have,
Matt:Best bang for your buck.
Pat:Yeah. So like, oh, well if he's good at skating and he moves the puck well and throws the body around, why are you trying to get rid of him? And it's like, well, you know, this could be his highest value of where he is at, right? Of where the, the time that we're in to get your best return for him, right. That kind of thing. And then they have, I think they have young, they have some youngsters coming up in the, in the pipeline as well. And so you gotta sort of make room for some of your youngsters. And if you think the youngsters are better or have a higher ceiling than, than Ferrara does, then, you know, that's a no brainer. So it, it does say here Toronto has some interest in, in Ferraro. So see what they do. But I think, I think Toronto's gonna be, uh, active at the, at the, at the trade deadline. I do.
Matt:Yeah, I was gonna say, I was gonna say, I was gonna say the same thing. I, I think so too because you know, with Austin Matthews really ripping and roaring this year and, and having a, an outstanding season. I think it's kind of setting the PCI tone of like, like we talked about before, Toronto's bad luck in the playoffs. Like, I think this is kind of like the final, like, Hey man, I've been here. I am scoring at Will and I'm doing everything for this team. Like we better make it. Yeah. Like you better get me some help and we better make it freaking deep into the playoffs or like go for a cup. Like,'cause yeah, I mean, same thing, like the kids, uh, eventually gonna be like, all right, I'm gonna take a big deal somewhere else'cause you guys didn't want to help me, you know, get, get the cup that I deserve. You know?'cause I do think Austin Matthews just, I've always liked him since day one. I've been watching him since he was a kid and he's just like incredible. And, uh, I think eventually he, he definitely deserves to, you know, hoist Lord Stanley. And uh, hopefully it's with Toronto.'cause I like him with Toronto. I really do. But yeah, at some point it's like, Hey man, either you get me the help or, or I'll find another team that will, you know, so yeah, I think Toronto will definitely find some way to sneak in something good here and, and get Matthew's that uh, you know, playoff run, you know, help that he's def definitely gonna need.
Pat:Yeah, I agree. I feel like all, I feel like Matthews and Connor McDavid are sort of in the same
Matt:Right. Yeah. Same wheelhouse there. Yep.
Pat:they're just one man teams just pushing the bus up the hill sort of thing. And so I think Matthews gets a little more coverage'cause he is an East coast guy and Mc David being out there in Edmonton, which is.
Matt:mm-Hmm,
Pat:Not great, but I mean, Edmonton's got some pieces right? And they're absolutely on a heater right now, right? They just had that, what it was like 16 game wind streak or something. I think that was 16 games. Uh, so they're abso they're doing fine. You know, you got dry sal out there and now they have a goalie. That's half the, I think Skinners out there now. You know, they really have some, they really have some pieces and they've been, they've been, they've been putting into work. So but yeah, I'm interested to see how those, uh, how those, uh, particular seasons go, especially with Toronto, with, you know, like you said, them being snake bitten, you know, they're the best team in the, in the league. And then they, you know, they kind of die off in, in the playoffs ala the, the Bruins, you know, was it last year or two years ago? Like, they steamrolled the entire league, the regular season, and
Matt:Mm-Hmm.
Pat:the, they were out in the first round of the playoffs, you know, that kind of thing. So
Matt:Yep.
Pat:it's a weird game like that. It's just, it just, you gotta hit it right. And timing and, and whatnot. So that's very, uh, it'll be interesting to see where things, uh, where things land. But the other Canadian team that I always take interest in,'cause they're just, they seem to be just on fire at the moment. Uh, Vancouver, the Canucks, and uh, it looks like they came close to trading their star sentiment. Elias Patterson.
Matt:Yeah, I was gonna say, but then they, uh, plan on signing them to a big deal now.
Pat:Yeah. I think from what I read, it was the hurricanes that were, that had, you know, that was like an advanced talks to, you know, to kind of do that trade. But yeah, and now they've basically extended them. So they didn't trade him and they, they're, they're extending him. I don't know what the details are, the extension, I don't, I don't think that's been out yet, but they are extending him. And so, but yeah, it was very it was very interesting to see Patterson.'cause he, uh, I, I, I watch a little bit of Patterson too, and he's just, he's, he's good. Like, he's not
Matt:Oh yeah. He's real good.
Pat:Matthew's good, but man, he can really, he can really play some good hockey. So that's very, uh, I always, uh, always like, uh, watching Patterson and, and I think he was in the skills comp this year for the, for the All-star game. So that was, uh, that was always, uh, always fun to get a peek at him. But yeah, I think he's getting some extension, uh, talks done there, so
Matt:some talk about an eight year possible,
Pat:so that's
Matt:which man, he's gonna have a good payday, but hey, if
Pat:Hey, you can get it.
Matt:yeah. Hey, if you can get it. And he's, he's playing very well this year. As long as, you know, you know, as well, you know, with the Canucks, Canucks are just, how in the hell the season talked about that before. So, Hey man, if you're not, uh, hey, keep playing. What's, what's working? You know what I mean?
Pat:Yeah. Yeah. And he's. he's. He's good. He's absolutely good, right? He's got, he's on
Matt:in my opinion.
Pat:let's see 82 games this year. He's on pace to score 39 goals and 101 points. So,
Matt:Yeah. Not bad at all.
Pat:just fall short, uh, of his 39 goals and 102 points in 80 games, uh, last year. So he is, he's Mr. Consistent
Matt:Yeah, I was gonna say consistent as hell. Yeah, absolutely. And that's what you want, you know what I mean?
Pat:So, yeah, exactly. Did you have any others here that stuck out to you, Matt? I don't, I. It's kind of just, like I said, it's a little early yet like we have another week to go. So I would suspect we'll probably touch on this a little bit with our next episode just as it gets a little closer to that deadline. But those are some, some major, you know, some talking points as of now where we are in the timeline of things. But we have another week or so to go yet, and I expect it to get a little hot and heavy and as it gets closer, but, uh, it, uh, it should be a good, uh, should be a good free agency and see who opens the wallets and borrows a, you know, borrows a player for a half a season and, you know, quarter of a season to get that stretch.
Matt:Yeah, no, I think that Chris Tav was really good for the stars. I mean, I talked about them earlier in, in the season, like them, the Canucks, I think are, are my two sleepers of the year that are just really playing, like both of those teams are playing really good hockey and they're not really getting too much traction. They're kind of flying under the radars and just winning games and they're still hanging at the top of the pack in their divisions. And like I said, nobody's really, you know, people are talking about'em, you know, flickering here and there, but I think Tiv is, is huge. It's, you know, huge for the stars on defensive side for them, and I think that could really be the piece of the puzzle in the playoffs here for them to maybe even get to the finals and, and win it, you know, maybe win it. So yeah, we'll see with that, but great trait for them. And then I also did see, uh, the Rangers, maybe there's some talks about, uh, you know, some, some of our bo our, our boy, uh, Frankie V that we talk about. Faking Vira out in Anaheim. And there there's some talks about bringing, you know, bringing them to, uh, to New York and try and get something. I think the Rangers will, will try and make something happen. I, I think they're kind of that team too, where it's like, we feel like we got pretty much all of it, but we just need a little something, you know what I mean? We don't know what it is, but we need a little something to maybe give them that little kick or that little boost that, that might, you know, maybe, uh, win it for'em all, but We'll, yeah, we'll see if they, if, if it happens. But I wouldn't be surprised if the Rangers definitely pull the trigger on, on some type of forward, or, or, you know, defenseman, you know, as well with all the injuries and stuff they've had recently. So yeah, we'll see what happens there. But, uh, yeah, yeah, we'll see you in this next like five, six days and there's gonna be a lot of noise now, like you said, the ball rolled with, with Chris Tav heading out. So I think a lot of GMs see that and then they, you know, once that first one or two big ones come out right off the bat in that first day or two, usually that's when you know all the starts. All the other teams start flooding the market and start getting calls and whatnot. So yeah, it'll definitely be interesting in these next five to five to seven days here.
Pat:yeah, for sure. So I'm, again, I'm very excited to see as it gets a little closer and. The wheels and the wheels and deals, as they say, start to start to spin here and see who lands on a new team. And that's just more talking points for us. So that'll be, uh, it's just, it's built in content for, for us and
Matt:Absolutely.
Pat:So all also, uh, awesome, awesome time. So, uh, I think that's it. Matt, do you have anything else? I think that was, uh,
Matt:No, I
Pat:hour mark,
Matt:yeah, I think we covered it for this past, you know, this past week and, you know, a bunch of games on tonight, 12 or so, I think tonight, and then definitely
Pat:right after this.
Matt:Yeah, I'm gonna check out some late games. I'll probably be going to bed here shortly. But yeah, I'll definitely check out who, who's, uh, still playing what now. But yeah, no, I think that's about it for this week. And then, like I said, once everything else starts flooding in the next five to seven days, we'll talk some more about trade deadline next week. And then, you know, start talking about who, who we think is gonna make a real, maybe, you know, a real cup contending run. And, uh, start, start seeing what's happening here in these, uh, last quarter of the season here.
Pat:Yeah, for sure. For sure. So, all right everybody, we'll get outta your hair. As always, we appreciate you joining us and hanging out and, uh, coming, uh, riding shotgun for this episode. So hope that the, uh, hope what we talked about was helpful and, and, uh, uh, you enjoyed it. Matt:Hit those buttons.
Pat:And rev. Yeah. Push those buttons, man. It's ha it's hard fighting an algorithm in today's social media driven world that we live in. So so also, uh. Yeah, it's way too much. Uh, rate and review. Uh, if you could throw us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts, that would be awesome. Uh, that also fools with said algorithm and gets more eyes and ears on the, on the pod. So, uh, always a, uh, good thing there as well. So obviously you're, you know, the feedback and whatnot that we get from y'all fuels the discussion here. So uh, that's greatly appreciated. Stay in the loop, uh, with us and chat with us. We are on a couple platforms, mainly Twitter or X and, uh, Instagram, uh, at shoot the puck pod.
