I think Couturier being named captain, but not really producing. I think that puts a black eye on, I should say that turns off a couple of the hardcore Flyers fans. Look I love Couturier. He's been a Flyers entire career. I think Couturier, the guy is one of the best, Defensive centers in the league. I just think he's done things the right way. He said the right things and yeah he's, you know, last couple of years, he's had the injury bug and he hasn't quite, you know, been the same. Hey everybody, welcome back to this week's edition of Shoot the Puck. Is this thing still on? We've been away for a few weeks tending to some other matters. But as usual, I'm your host Pat, driving the bus here. And Matt is on the other mic as well as usual.

Track 1:are back. We are back. Like I said, we had some things to do, some things to handle. Our folks are moving. Um, so they've enlisted us as the muscle to move them. So that's been a couple of week project that Matt and I have been on. So, away from the mic here a little bit. Um, and you know, nonetheless, a lot has happened. So we're gonna, this'll be a little bit of a recap episode and whatnot. So, um, Just kind of catching up on some news and whatnot and then we got some fresh Fresh playoff stuff happening here since we're in the thick of it So, welcome back everybody appreciate you sticking with us and wondering where we are so trying to get back to a a weekly schedule here and Get ready for the the upcoming nhl playoffs. So always and I love nhl Playoff time. It's the best playoff in sports, I think atmosphere, um, the whole deal, NHL playoffs is unlike anything else. So, all that said, Matthew, how are you, my friend?
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Howdy, Pat. How we doing? Yeah. Um, yeah. Helping mom and dad move. So, it's been a little crazy for us schedules wise and also maybe, you know, it was a little good that we took a little break just because I wanted to see, you know, after the trade deadline, who's kind of fitting in where on their new teams and you know, who's going to be making playoff run soon and you know, a couple teams clinched as of like last night. Yeah, we'll dive in and Figure out what's going on here and coming up in the playoff season. Yeah.
Track 1:we get underway here. As a reminder subscribe on your favorite platform of choice, right? And also we're pretty much everywhere, right? Um, Apple Podcasts, Spotify pretty much anywhere. You get a podcast, we are there. So go and hop over and hit that subscribe button. That'd be awesome. Also give us A rating. And a review that would be awesome too that plays with the algorithms that can, you know, that nowadays seem to control our lives more and more so that plays the algorithm gets us in front of more eyes and ears and all that kind of stuff. So, any kind of feedback you can give us on that kind of fuels the hockey discussion here. So that would be awesome. And also follow us on our socials Twitter slash X and Instagram at shoot the puck pod. So. All that out of the way, um, we will get right into it and I want to start it with the trade deadline. It was, I thought it was a good trade deadline this year. We're, again, we're kind of late to the party on this, but it's been about, what, about three weeks now, I guess, Matt, is the
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:A little over two, about like 16, 17 days, something like that. Yeah. Just short of three weeks. So yeah.
Track 1:yeah. So it's been a little bit. Um, and I know in today's Podcast news world. We almost seem to live in that 24 7 cycle of news and things of that nature so a little late to the game here, but we just have a couple thoughts that we have on paper, but um it was a decent. Trade deadline this year. So a lot of moving parts a lot of People in new places, obviously, um, you know, things like nature extensions, whatever, that kind of thing. So, um, just a couple of the big ones for highlight wise, um, obviously the big one, Matt, is your boy out there I should say your former penguin Jake Gensel, now with the Carolina Hurricanes.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:It was his first Carolina game and he still even had his pens like gear bag because he like just flew in just being traded and yeah, it's pretty crazy. It was sad. But yeah, man, it was sad to see him go. I mean, it was kind of unfortunate that him and the pens couldn't make a deal and come to an agreement because from what I heard, you know, he really wanted to try and stay, but. I guess just, you know, um, yeah, him and Dubas and management or whatever just couldn't, you know, strike a deal, which is unfortunate. You know, it sucks because him and Cid were really the one two, you know, combo there. And I was really hoping that Gensoul would kind of take Cid's place after he retired and kind of started that, you know, second chapter. Um, He could have been captain. That would have been nice to see. But, um, yeah, I mean, you know, it's, it sucks, but you know, yeah, you know, it is a business, you know, NHL and unfortunately, Ron Hextall really set a dumpster fire when he came in for a couple years after Rutherford and really just screwed the cap, which is kind of what he's famous for. So, um, he kind of made a mess and then he got booted out. And now Kyle Dubas, who was formerly for Toronto Maple Leafs, um, now is kind of trying to come in and clean up his mess, so to speak. So, yeah. Yeah, that's where that lies. But yeah, I mean, hey man, Genzel's looking good with Carolina already. And I'm really happy to see that he's kind of fit like right in off the bat. And Carolina's looking pretty damn good right now. So, um, they'll, yeah, they'll definitely be, you know, a top cup contending team. Um, if they keep playing, which I'm sure they will, you know, and yeah, him and Kuznetsov down there, man both, you know, Carolina scooped up both those guys who are on the trade deadline and it just, they seem to be clicking and seem to be rocking and rolling. So, yeah.
Track 1:yeah. kind of crazy. Um, I mean, it's not surprising that he was traded. He was the, you know, he was the best player, um, to be, you know, to be moved. Right. So not surprising. Um.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yep.
Track 1:But he was hurt before the trade took place. So, you know, he's got the injury bug to him, but then once he returned, man, he's just, it's like, he never missed a beat. Right. He's got I think he's got two goals and 12 points in like eight or nine games, For the hurricanes. Um, so, um, you know, that's you know, he's going to put up points for sure. I think he's on the line with. I think it's, I believe it's the top line. I think he's with Sebastian Ajo and Seth Jarvis, if I'm not mistaken. And basically, you know, obviously he knows how to put the puck in the net, but I think he's been more of a all situations kind of setup guy here the last you know, since he's kind of arrived down there in hurricane territory. So, um, always a good time. And he actually just wasn't it this week that he came back and faced the Penguins for the first time? I think they gave him a little,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:yeah, they give him a really nice tribute. He was really yeah. I saw it was like a couple nights ago, actually. Um, yeah, and I kind of flickered on and then, but then I saw the video after and he was actually kind of tears rolling down his cheek and whatnot, you know, so it was probably a special moment for him. Um, like I said, it's just really unfortunate. I mean, most penguins fans, if you talk to him, they really want to against all this day, you know, he was a good guy. Um, but like we said, it's a business man. And when old GM's kind of screw you from future. Building and rebuilding, which the pens obviously need to do, and they waited too long to do it, and we talked about it before. Um, you know, cause like some pens fans are a little mad, they're like, oh, you know, they shouldn't, but it's like, you gotta start somewhere, and if, he was gonna not sign probably with us next year anyway, because he wants too much money, and like I said, Dubas has gotta clean this mess up that Rutherford made, er, sorry Hextal. boogered up for the pens. Um, so yeah he's trying to get some draft picks and just Some parts moving here in the next couple of years because he knows he has to clean it up now and rebuild So, um, yeah, I mean kenzel's definitely going to be very expensive next year. I don't know if he'll um, you know i'm, not sure if carolina will um, try and re sign him or somewhere else but either way I mean, he's definitely one of the top guys in the league and you know, he's still only what 29 30 pat He's really still relatively young and yeah, he's playing at a high level and he always has been. Um, You So, yeah, I'm sure he's gonna definitely get a big payday from somewhere coming up.
Track 1:Yeah, I would expect him to be expensive no matter where he goes. So, GMs will be rolling out the red carpet and the pocketbook for Gentle. He's he's definitely still on the upswing and yeah he's down there with a Hurricanes team. That's, you know, they're poised for a cup run and those guys are good. So, He'll be in the thick of that, um, in no time and see if he can get himself a cup. So. Always good to to see Jake there and moving. He, you know, he's basically in a better position and see if he can go snag him some cups, but he'll be expensive for sure. So, that was a good one. The other one too Tyler Tufoli, um, Tufoli has been around for a while now. Um, a couple of years, a couple of years in the league. He was with. He was with the kings for a while out west then he was with the devils if I'm not mistaken, um, and then he's now with the jets. So, um, um, You know, over the last two years, he's played for three teams. So just seems to, like I say he's a journey, man. He's been in the league a while and whatnot, but, um, seems to be fitting in well with the Jets ever since landing up there north of the border. So he's got four goals and six points in the eight games that that he's got. Um, And so, um, you know, you get, he brings that extra offensive offensive boost to the table, right? That kind of thing. Um, and then obviously the, um, the Jets also acquired Sean Monahan, um, is basically their second line Senator there. So, um, So Tafoli being on the third line, um, kind of gives it a little more firepower. Um, you know, you have talent as much, you know, as what Tafoli has. And he's on your third line, you're doing all right. You know,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, stretching it out a little bit more,
Track 1:yeah. for real. So, um, I think he's averaging like 15 minutes a game on the ice, which is pretty decent. So, um, You know, all that kind of thing. So he's gotten a couple three point efforts here. I think he had a three point game against Columbus, um, the other night, um, but he's still definitely, um, a good pickup. I think for Winnipeg, um, You know, even though he's on the third liner, he's still rock solid in the middle of that line. So I think he'll I think he'll do well and the Jets are prime there as well. They're looking like a great team as well. So another cup contender kind of getting in there and getting, stretching our legs for a cup run. So we'll see.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah. He's yeah, like you said, he's moved around a bunch to Foley, but, I mean, I, from when I've always seen him, I always think he's, like, solid. Um, you know, I've never seen him making any crazy, bad moves. You know, hockey plays or anything like that. It's just a good solid like second, third line give you some grit and, you know, some extra scoring chances, you know, here and there. So yeah, it's good for them. Winnipeg needs some kind of boost. Um, you know what I mean? They're just kind of like flatlining at some, sometimes you're just like, ah, they're good. Then they're not, then it's like, ah, up and down. So yeah, it's interesting. Mine was Jake Allen kind of go, I mean, we kind of knew like Jersey was looking for all goaltenders cause they had so much trouble this year with their goaltenders. Oh my God. It's insane. Um, so yeah, so Jake Allen, I mean, three, three three and two since he got there. But I don't know, man, the Jets or sorry, not the Jets Devils, you know, firing their coach not too long ago, which I'm not even sure if we talked about. Um, yeah. And yeah, they were pretty good early in the season. Looked really good. And then just same thing, just kind of flatline gold tending issues and just, yeah, and just all of a sudden just to went right down and yeah, it just kind of stinks to see. But I always liked Jake Allen, you know, I always liked him when he was playing with the blues, um, and he's, you know, kind of bopped around in the last few years. But, um, yeah, it's good to see him still still getting it done.
Track 1:Yeah, right on. Um, yeah, like I think, you know, the devils have kind of chewed through goalies here. Um, but Yeah. I think, um, he's already outperformed. Vantacek, um, and, so I think he gives, I think he gives the Devils a fighting chance, I think they're a little too far out to make that, to make those points up in the last, I think there's what, 9 games of the season, or 9 or 10 games of the season left here?
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah,
Track 1:just outside that bubble, um, but um, But yeah, I think he's a good pickup to see if he can stabilize that position a little bit. I would agree. Um, like I said, he's 3 2 since he showed up, and he's got a 9 23 save percentage. So, you know, it's Yeah, I mean, they've done about as good as they can.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, with the year that they've had.
Track 1:Yeah. and the playoff push and giving the teams, you know, the flaws that they have. And they have a few. So, um, but Yeah, I think he brings some, I think he brings some stability to that to the goalie position. And he's been in the league a few years now, so he understands what, um, You know what's asked and what needs to happen in between the pipes, but I think it's a good one. I do The other one I thought was good too was I think he mentioned Kuznetsov down for with Gensel down in the hurricane So I think he needed I think he needed a fresh start. I think out of Washington, right? The capitals there Yeah You know, and getting traded to a team with, you know, big Stanley Cup aspirations as the Hurricanes, you know, are. I think it could be good for him. So, um, You know, he's got five points in the last ten games, so he's, you know, he's getting there.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, not bad.
Track 1:Now, you know, those five points all came within, I think, like a four game span. So, you know, kind of all in one shot, but, um, you know, again he's kind of bit, you know, cause that's how it's been in the league a while, you know, you're not like expecting miracles out of them. Right. So.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Right.
Track 1:you know, he's, he just had, he's had 17, 17 points at 43 games. So he's not lighting the world on fire, but I think getting out of Washington with a fresh pair of eyes with news, new surroundings, um, I think he'll fit well in that top six there in Carolina and, um, You know, who knows, you know, he's doing a little bit of a mini slump now, but I think like I said, once he get, you know, he got out of Washington and with the, you know, the staleness that was there and gets a fresh fresh start in Carolina and you know, kind of them head charging to the cup, I think that may work wonders for Kuznetsov. So we'll see.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, kind of weird. Like, I never saw him get comfortable, really, in Washington. Like, I just never saw him, like, look comfortable or, like, look to be excited or, you know, he kind of was just, like, you know, like, stuck in the, you know, in the middle there and just didn't either, you know, produce or he just didn't make a lot of noise at all. Let's just put it that way. So, like I said, just didn't look comfortable. It didn't look good at all. So yeah, like you said, glad to see that he got a fresh pair. And now it seems like him and Gensler are kind of taken off from, you know, well, you know, just from making trade deadline impacts. But, um, yeah, it'd be interesting to see if he's still with with them too. Next year. I'm not sure if he got a big time deal or anything probably not I would think just this the end of this year, but you never know. I mean, you know, we'll see but yeah, cuz that's off. I Mean, he's a good guy. He's he can play his ass off. You know what I mean? He's definitely more of a veteran guy that knows the ins and outs and the smarts, you know The smart plays to make so I think he's really showing that in the top, you know Top six or whatever that he is in Carolina now. So it would be interesting to see if they make some real big noise that if his, you know, leadership and veteranship can really take them into a deep playoff run.
Track 1:Yeah, no, I think that's fair. We'll see if Kuznetsov can really, um, kind of write this ship or whatever. Um, I'll say this one, um, he's not really It's not like light in the world on fire, but it's just, it's close. It's near and dear to my heart.'cause of, um, he used to be a flyer It was Sean Walker going to the Avalanche. He just and now like it's even worse now.'cause like right after they traded him or, yeah they train the flyers. D has kind of hit the injury bug, so they, um.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah. Yeah.
Track 1:But, um, yeah he's 29. He was, you know, he had a career year with the Flyers, right. Um, you know, a lot of, he ate up a lot of minutes on the backend and, um, you know, almost at a 30 point pace, right. Before the Flyers moved him. So, you know, um, Yeah, even, I think he came to Colorado and I think his ice time kind of took a dive, I don't want to say dive, but reduced, um, but he's been great, um, two goals against Edmonton in the middle of March there, right before St. Paddy's Day and, um, I think he's up to like four or five points now in, in like seven or eight contests. So, which is great. So, um, you know, he's less relied on in, in Colorado that he would have been in Philly. Um, but Yeah having that guy on a third pair the third D pair, um, is going to be. It's going to be awesome for Colorado. They're going to they're going to be tough to handle. That's for sure. And it, like I said, it's just, it was just shitty timing that they traded away Sean Walker and then like, like Jamie Drysdale got hurt and Rista Lyndon got hurt and there's like three or four flyers, defensemen that just like, It's like, man, like what a terrible time, That kind of thing. So I'm happy for Sean Walker, but, um, Yeah, the avalanche is going to be a problem. Um, you know, just come play off time because they have so much depth you know, at that position
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:yeah, Colorado stacked at that, especially with, you know, their number one guy, Macar. I mean, he's just insane. Um, but yeah, I was kind of surprised by that. I didn't think Philly would send him off. I thought, he was having like a good, obviously, you know, we talked about it like a solid year so far. So I thought he was like one of their main top defensemen this year for sure. And I was like, Oh, you've been watching him. Like, Oh, this kid's kind of young. Like he's, he looked like he could be like a good up and coming flyer, you know, defenseman for a while. And apparently they thought otherwise. So, and to be, yeah, I don't know, to be honest, I'm not really sure What the flyers there's something going on there too, you know, I don't know with you know The whole thing with couturier and torts and then a couple weeks ago torts didn't want to leave the box And he's screaming with the ref and then he gets fine. Then. Oh my god. That was hilarious I don't know if anybody's seen it. I mean, I'm sure you
Track 1:Never change torts. Never change. It's
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:He's he's one of a kind for sure but yeah, just it just seems like things aren't Clicking as much as they were, you know back maybe a month ago. So which is kind of unfortunate with playoffs coming up. So But yeah, I mean, hopefully you guys can figure it out and get it going again But yeah, it's just kind of all weird stuff going on in Philly
Track 1:Yeah, I think the defense has taken a hit with a couple guys. Um, so now they're trying to like patchwork some stuff together. Um, I think Couturier being named captain, but not really producing. It's his first full year back from the injury that kept him out all of, I think. good portion if not all of last year. Um, so, you know, I get it. It takes time and whatnot. And probably the captain, the sea probably was mistimed, I think maybe by the flyers and just kind of, cause now like you put the seat on him and he's still a little bit of a, yeah, Scratch a little bit of a dumpster fire. It
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:it doesn't look good No, that's what I mean. Everything's weird going on down there. I don't know what the hell's going
Track 1:not great. And you got Torch yelling at people behind the bench and refusing to leave and, um, it's just, I'm here for it, baby. Bring it on. But, um, no, I think there is some, you know, and I, but to be honest with you, I think this year the, Flyers have outdone any expectations. They weren't expected to do anything this year. They were expected to be in the rebuild and suck and, you know, get, you know, get the young kids some ice time and, you know, that kind of thing. But they're third in the Metro and, you know, they have a really good shot at making playoffs. So it can't be mad. It can't be that mad at him. So, um, yeah, we'll see. But, um, Yeah, so I thought that was you know, a couple of the big time trades that were made. I mean, there were others, but those were the ones that kind of stuck out on paper for us to say, Hey, you know what, you know, trade the deadline they got dealt. It's, um, you know, a couple of weeks have passed. Let's see what they're doing. And so those were a couple of the big ones that kind of stuck out to us to, um, You know, that that were doing well with their new squads, so, um, always good there. And then, um, I would say, um, I'm trying to see if I could phrase this correctly, um, you know, I would say, um, I would think that there's some hot teams since the trade deadline. So kind of shifting from players that were dealt to now teams that are, you know, have really kind of picked it up because of their trades or whatnot. So there was a couple that stuck out to me, um, that are absolutely red hot. Um, first and foremost, I think that the Nashville Predators going on the run that they did is just killing it. They're insane. I was like, what is happening? What's in the water down there in Nashville? They just came out of nowhere and it's just like, holy Hannah. Like that's just wild, you know? But, um, I think they're, Nashville's on like a 16 oh and two run. Something like that. I can, it's like, What is happening?
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:That's what they did 1502. Yeah, it's insane Hell of a freaking
Track 1:is. It's insane.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:A lot of
Track 1:on all cylinders.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:teams a lot of crazy stretches
Track 1:Big stretches. Big stretches Um, so that 15 Oh and two record dates back to February 17th. So, um, and that was two days after they dropped the nine to two divisional games To,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:against the stars, yeah. Yeah, they
Track 1:got punched.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:I remember seeing that score, I was like, oh man.
Track 1:it was rough. Um, so yeah, so, Um, but yeah, I mean you gotta give it to, you gotta give it to Nashville Thunder, you gotta give it to guys like Roman Yossi, who just happens to be their captain. He deserves a lot of credit for keeping that train on the track, man. A 9 2 home drubbing from a division rival is pretty good. Probably not. It's not the best look. Um, but they, you know, they kept it together and Yoshi's having a good year too for a defenseman. He's got 18 goals. It ties in with Kale McCarr from Colorado
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, solid.
Track 1:among defensemen. So, um,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yoshi's always been a beast, man, always.
Track 1:he's always. solid, super solid. Also from the brass perspective there in Nashville, right? Barry Trotz, right? Legendary coach. Now he's in a, in the GM role. Um,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:yeah, I was gonna say.
Track 1:Yeah, absolutely. Um, so, you know, with his, you know, the signings of like guys like Ryan O'Reilly and Gustav Nyquist and, um, Luke Shen. right. It
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, Luke Shen. I was gonna say Luke Shen. Yeah.
Track 1:kind of thing. Um, you know, um, you know, but then he, you know, um, at the deadline toward, yeah, towards Trots elected to go for guys like Jason Zucker, right? So he was like a buy low kind of thing, you know, kind of thing. Zucker, right? So, um, you know, Novak and Favreau and those kinds of guys, right? The, they got contract extension. So he's been shrewd and sharp where he has to be. Jason Zucker, right? So, now I think the dividends are paying off, man. Jason Zucker, right? So,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Mhm.
Track 1:but then they part ways with like Bo Byrum and Ryan Johansson and Curtis McDermott, that kind of thing. So they shed some weight there, but they brought in guys, you know, um, Casey Middlestad, right? Um, I forget where Casey was playing before. I forget. Um, Brandon Duhame, that kind of thing. So they've got some pieces and it doesn't hurt to, you know, Nathan McKinnon, which is one of the best pure scores and, You know, in the league, the last fricking seems like a million years,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, insane.
Track 1:those guys just are, they're just insane. And they're 28, 28, six and oh, at their home barn. Like, that's just
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:yeah they're always tough at home and they're always so tough at home. It's really hard to beat them. They're always has
Track 1:really hard.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:in the last couple of years, I should say. You know what I mean? So
Track 1:No, another
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:but going back to Nashville real quick, like that's surprising to me because like, they did not look good before, like the half, like they looked, I thought for sure, like, oh man, rebuild, like. Yeah, and they were gonna like kind of be one of the bottom top, you know, bottom of the league, kind of, so to speak. And then they rip off this freaking 15, you know, run here and it's like, holy Hannah. And now they're, you know, they're like middle of the pack. So who knows, they might, if they keep, you know, playing the way they have been playing in the last couple of weeks, they might sneak into a playoff spot here. So that'd be really interesting. But, um, yeah, I mean, no surprise from Colorado. Like we always talk about them, like, Always pretty much burning like the second half. Sometimes they start a little slow, you know, and get them pieces rolling together. But then once they do and they get their click back like that second half of the season, they always just light it on fire and they're really hard to beat. So
Track 1:Yeah. Yeah, for sure. Um, so Nashville, Colorado. Did you have one, Matt? Somebody that's on fire? If not, I have another one.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Tampa Bay, man, Tampa Bay is looking pretty good.
Track 1:good. one.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Um, Hold on one second, Pat. Yeah, Tampa Bay looks really good, man. Um, Nikita Kucherov is back to him old, you know, not that he ever went anywhere, but like back to his former self of, you know, back to his 2019. And he's he's looking good, man. Challenging for the Hart Trophy. I think this year he's having a really good year. And then, you know, Andre Vasilevsky, man, save percentage this year still below nine. So he's carrying most of the workload and getting most of those wins for Tampa Bay. Um, and man, I feel like he's been there forever too, right? Like just insane. Some of them guys have been there for so long and still cooking it with gas, man. It's like, sometimes they look a little shaky, you know, at times and then you're like, ah, is this it? And then all of a sudden they're just back to themselves and they're like, Oh, here's the lightning again. So it's just really interesting to see. But yeah, since the deadline, Tampa Bay six Oh, and one, um, Despite having, you know, just finished a five game road trip that started in Florida, ended up in Anaheim. Um, but yeah, man, anytime you have Nikita Kucharoff on your team, it's you're always destined to be somewhere in the mix of playoffs and cups and all that good glory days that Tampa Bay has definitely given him. So, um, but yeah, I mean, who knows with such a toss up this time of year, because this is when, like, when all these teams really get hot. And they either stay hot or they burn out right before or like right when the playoffs start. And, you know, we've seen it before with Tampa Bay actually being one of those teams, you know what I mean? And like Toronto and the Capitals and those teams that like have 60 some wins, 50 some wins or they, you know, and then they go real hot. And then, you know, First round, they're just booted. Somebody comes, you know, six, six, fifth seed that you weren't really expecting to play that well. And then all of a sudden you're like, how the hell did we lose that series? We were like one of the best teams in the league. So, yeah, so you just got to be careful there, but yeah, I mean, who knows? I don't think Tampa Bay will have that issue again. I hope not. It always bums me out when Tampa Bay gets booted so early because they always have such great talent. I mean, they really do. And then, you know, sometimes it just doesn't work out, but hey, it's the name of the game. Yeah.
Track 1:Yeah, I would agree. Bruins is another one that comes to mind where they do, like, they're like white hot in the regular season, then
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:good call, Bruins.
Track 1:first round. It's like, all right, you know, but, um, no I get it. Um, Yeah, so those are three good ones, and then, you know, the honorable mention, I guess we'll mention here is the Hurricanes, right? So they're, they just have, they're just so stacked with Gensel and now Kuznetsov coming over and the talent they have, you know, Sebastian Ajo and, you know, those guys, that kind of thing. It's just been I just, I see them going super deep in the playoffs. Going super like I said, super deep. So, um, the other now for the other side of the coin, um, folks that
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Not so hot.
Track 1:no, not so hot. I'll start it off with the Seattle Kraken. Um, I, you know, I wanted the Kraken to do well. I root for the expansion teams just cause I like to see how well they stack up, um, and they seem to have it. Decent fan base out there. Um, cause I like, I watch a lot of the Kraken cause they're the late night game here on the East coast. So, you know, I'll, you know, they come on at 10 o'clock or 10 30, whatever it was, and then I'll just, I'll eventually fall asleep, but, um, you know, it seems to me like they have a decent following out there, hockey has done well, um, in this first couple of years out there. So, you know, you kind of root for them. Um, it's just never quite. How'd it get there? So like, before the deadline, um, the Kraken actually Kraken and the Flames, um, they were six points out of a wildcard spot. Um,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:they were right at the tail end of definitely
Track 1:they were both kind of surging, Yeah, sneaking in, they were getting hot at the right time, um,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:around the Winter Classic because Joey Decour was having a pretty good, you know, I mean, pretty good stretch there. So, yeah, I definitely thought the Kraken were gonna make more
Track 1:Seattle had one, like four out of five. Um, and then Calgary was like six out of seven, that kind of thing. So, um, but they were both sellers of the deadline, right? So they Kraken sent Alex Wenberg to New York to the Rangers. Um, and then they also, they signed one of their own Jordan Eberle to a two year extension. Um, But then like they came like crashing down to earth, like the bottom fell out. It was like, They're Oh six and two since the deadline
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeesh.
Track 1:just scored seven goals in the last six games. Like that's
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Oh, wow. Yeah, it's not getting
Track 1:that's
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:all.
Track 1:rough. Um,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:not much worse you can get than that, to be honest.
Track 1:No, they were not great. Um, and so, you know, It's just, um, I don't know, it's just, they just don't seem to be, they seem to be going in the opposite direction, and now, at one point, Dave Haxtell, former Flyer coach, um, he was a finalist for the Jack Adams award, and now he's kinda talking, like a coach, he's on, you know, shaky ground suddenly when he was calling out players for the 5 1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens the other day So I don't know just seems or things seem to be going off the rails quite a bit out there in Kraken country so And then in Calgary, I think the rebuild Has been on, you know, the writing on the wall, um, for a while, I should say, you know, since late last year, When they shipped, um, Zd was it
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Zdorov. Yep, Zdorov.
Track 1:shipped in, that's right, we talked about that, Yeah, when they shipped Zdorov to Vancouver, Um, but then they were also kind of winning games at the trade deadline, Um, you know, you know, even, you know, they moved Lynn Holm, they moved Chris Tanev, they moved Noah Hannafin. Um, they all went out the door and, you know, um, they got Kuzmenko and Miminov, I think that's how you say his name, um, so they got him. Markstrom. Jacob Markstrom stayed put, which I think is good. Um, You know, but then again, he wasn't, he's a good player, but I don't, I think that was an issue cause it,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, I think he wanted out. Yeah,
Track 1:yeah, he wasn't happy with how management
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, I think he was hoping to yeah, he was hoping to get booted out with the rest of the guys and it just didn't happen
Track 1:I think So
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:now you got him pissed off, you know what I mean?
Track 1:Yeah, now you got him pissed. He's played just twice since the deadline.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:gonna say barely plays now, huh
Track 1:Nah, he doesn't play. They've collected just 4 of a possible 16 points since the, since March 8th, the deadline. And they got a 2 6 0 record. So, not so great. So, I mean, that's good in the terms of they're gonna better draft lottery position. But, um, the morale seems to be the big Point there, so we'll see but not so great for those two squads
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, no, I think definitely for Calgary, it was kind of the best interest to kind of, you know, Do what like the pens are doing now like all right got to start moving some guys got to start shuffling some things around because you Got a guys are unhappy and just you know bad Contracts that you just need to get rid of and just need to start scratch and yeah Just start drafting get more draft picks because there's always a ton of talent coming up Especially now within the next couple years. I mean these kids are incredible. So, um, there's definitely gonna be no shortage of that So yeah, I mean, I think Calgary definitely made the right move, but I mean, yeah, it just sucks for Markstrom. I think he was really trying to get out of there and was hoping that, hey, this is definitely the year that I'm out. Um, and it just didn't happen. So now that's a bummer. But yeah Calgary. Yeah, they were kind of floating on the back end, you know, earlier, you know, like two months ago. That was even like, They were like middle, kind of middle down towards the bottom, but like you said, like definitely in a wildcard position to, to definitely be in there. And I'm like, oh man, you know, Kachuk's playing pretty good, like there's some good, there's some good talent, some good young talent up there. And then, you know, deadline came and it just seems like the pieces were moved and then morale is down with Markstrom and all that. And it just doesn't seem to be going well at all now. So now I think you just kind of got to just Whatever
Track 1:You're gonna cut bait
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Just whatever, you know, just let the season, you know, play out and you're probably not going to get in now and, you know, rebuild. So, that's all you
Track 1:it tank and have at it.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:yep. Get some good draft picks, yep.
Track 1:The last one here that I saw was New York New York Islanders, not so great. They thought the they thought bringing in Patrick Wah in here, uh, to right the ship would help them. I don't think it's I don't think it's helped them as quite as much as they thought. Um,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:much as they'd hoped, yeah.
Track 1:yeah, he did build a, what, it was a six game win streak there. Um, That, that was like the deadline was right in the middle of that six game win streak and put them in a playoff position. Um, and then they've like, they didn't make any trades. It didn't make any roster changes and they kind of fell into that trap. Right. So it's like, ah, you don't know what to do. You don't know whether to add people or stay still. And you just kind of get lost in the mush. Um, but, um, they lost six in a row. And then seven of the last eight. Um, so they were on a big slide. You know, but at the same time, Like, Like out west, The standings aren't that tight, right? You know who's going to get in out west. So Seattle and Calgary
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:little more lean room.
Track 1:They're basically at home, right? But in the east, it's really tight. Like, Like, stupid tight. So they still, I mean, the Islanders still have a shot if they can get, if they can get their head out of their asses and kind of write the ship a little bit. They still have a shot. Um, which is they just four points outside of that second wildcard spot. Um, so,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, never know.
Track 1:you know, Hey, who knows? You know, they, like I said, they have a two, six and one record since the deadline. Um, you know. but they still play a bunch of teams that could help their cause, right? So, um, I think tonight they had, um, I think tonight, which it's Thursday the 28th by the way, Um, they leave on, they had a road trip, I think it's in Florida, they're in Florida, Tampa, and then they play my Flyers. So, all three of those teams are right in the thick of that. So,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, well, they won
Track 1:couple wins Did they?
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, they beat the Panthers 3 2, so.
Track 1:Okay, so there you go, that helps their cause, right? So, if they can, you know, beat Tampa or beat Philly, they're right back in it, right? So, it's a four game, it's a four point swing, you know, in each direction. So, um, yeah, always so we'll see. We'll see what happens on the island and kind of go from there. We did want to bring you a couple just a couple of kind of who's hot, who's not. Since the actual trade deadline, so we'll see what happens with these and then The other thing too. I thought it was interesting was that there's I think kind of discuss on a couple teams that Could be slept on people taking a nap on them there dear brother. Let's
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Watch out for the sleepers.
Track 1:Yeah, a little sleep action. So, um, I don't know, did you have one? One or two, Matt, that you think that are that are being slept on?
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, I mean, I always like the L. A. Kings and I always think people kind of don't give them enough, enough credit and then they actually end up winning cups. So it's it's pretty insane. Um, but yeah, I mean, Kopitar still there still doing his thing. Um, Cam Talbot's been pretty solid since he's been, you know, been over there this year, um, having a pretty good season. Um, won four straight recently. So, I mean, the problem is with the Kings is like, do they have enough depth though? You know what I mean? Cause sometimes they really lack that depth. Um, and they can either go and play really well or all of a sudden, you know, they're not hanging in the mix anymore. Cause they had some, remember like, We were just talking about it maybe, what, a couple weeks ago. They were playing good and then all of a sudden they were kind of in a slump and you didn't know which way they were going, so. But I think definitely with the veteranship there and the older guys that, you know, can really, you know, grind it out and know how to get in and way better. You know, win those really tough playoff games, which the Kings do, definitely do. We've seen it before. Um, So, I think if they get those guys mindset and just get them going and try and really push in these last, like, you know, eight, ten games and just keep on winning and see what happens. You know, what's the worst that could happen? Because I don't think anybody expected Talbot to be there and play as well as he has, you know, this year. So, it's kind of, you know, Yeah,
Track 1:I would agree. I think, um, I think the Kings are always sort of in the conversation, right? So, um, they have, I mean, like I said, Andrzej Kupitar, I think, I feel like he's been in the league a billion years. That guy just that guy just never seems to slow down. Um, but he's been in the league a long time. and I feel like the Kings had somewhat of, like, I think Like three different seasons all wrapped into one, right? Cause if you remember, they started out like this massive juggernaut, they went 16, six and four, um,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:and they had that slump.
Track 1:behind Vegas for first place out in the West. Like they came out just slugging and just beating everybody like over the head, like bludgeoning people to death. And then, um, And then they came crashing down to Earth. Then they had that whole, like, they fired McClellan, right? Um, which we talked about. Which is, it looks like, they went 7, 9, and 6 over that stretch. And then they said goodbye to McClellan. Um, it turns out to be just exactly what they needed. Because since Jim Jim Hiller took over. Which, you know, it's kind of their third season at this point in this long season here. Um, they're now 1 since he took over. So, um, and now they're back to fourth best in the in the West. So, um, I think their defense has improved quite a bit. So, I think I think that really, that 15 7 0 1 really lends to defense being, um, you know, much better. So, um,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, Dowdy, Mikey Anderson, both playing really well. Dowdy's still doing well, man. It's impressive to see, you know, it's still impressive to see him and Kopitar being there as long as they have and still rocking.
Track 1:Kopitar being, you know, one of the, still one of the better two way players in the game. He's 36 and he's centering. I think he's centering Quentin Biefeld and Adrian Kempe. So, that's one of the best lines in the NHL, I think, really, if you look at it. Um, so, you know.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Kopitar and Talbot both 36. Doing the damn thing this year.
Track 1:Damn.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:It's awesome. It's awesome.
Track 1:It's insane. Um, so yeah, so that, yeah, Talbot kind of his resurgence kind of thing, so yeah, I think the kings are the kings are completely slept on just because of all the turmoil that they had this year with just moving pieces and, you know, all that kind of stuff, so,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, it'd be interesting to see if they can actually make it past because they haven't won a second round since nine years ago when they won the cup. So, you know, they've got in, you know, still have gotten in the last couple of years, you know, but they just still can't get over that hump. So it'd be interesting to see, especially with the, it'd be awesome to see, I should say, especially this year with like, like I said, you know, Talbot and Kopitar still playing well. So yeah.
Track 1:yeah. I think that's definitely something to look at to see how far they can go, um, to kind of keep the fairy tale season going here, um, because what they've been able to accomplish since Hiller took over is just, it's insane. So, um, yeah. Always we'll see what see what the Kings do. Shout out to our uncle Matt, who's a huge Kings fan. So he's always interested in seeing what the the Kings do. And he's a Kings and a Predators guy. So he's sitting pretty good there. Good old uncle. He's a, when no matter what squad he goes with, he's a, he's in the right side. Yeah,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:not too shabby.
Track 1:all good. Um, the one I had too was, um, kind of talked about him earlier a little bit. Um, Um, Oh, sorry. Was Tampa Bay lightning. I think for years, like they were just such a juggernaut for years. They were just, again, just mowing through people and with like no mercy with, you know, with Stamkos and, you know, all those guys just lighting the lamp at will.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:St. Louis.
Track 1:Yes St. Louis.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, they had a hell of
Track 1:coaching in Montreal right now. So, um, you know, you've got John Cooper behind the bench, right? You got Stamko. She got, um, Vasilevsky between the pipes. You got um, Oh, he mentioned him earlier. I'm liking on his name. Um, Kucherov. Um, yeah, Kucherov there. So like you got all these good play good you know, good pieces. Um, um, you had Patti Maroon there for a couple of years, right? So he was kind of a, you know, he was fun to watch, but like, like. They were always in the spotlight. They were always like, Oh yeah, you expect Tampa Bay to do well this year. You know, they're going to, you know, whatever they're going to do this and this, and they're going to just light the light, the lamp at will. This year was a little different. I thought they kind of, they're kind of starting to show their age a little bit. They're not quite as long in the tooth as your pens are, Matt, but I think they're starting to get there. Um,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, a couple more years.
Track 1:Yeah, I think Stamkos is on the wrong side. Um, Vasileski, while he's one of the better goalies in the league, if not the best, Um, I think, you know, he's going to start to show some age, I think. So, I think that core that they had back a couple years ago is starting to, you know, kind of get a little long in the tooth and get on the wrong side. So, I think they kind of flew under the radar this year, I think. Um, but now, I think, um, You know, it was it was a little bit of a rough season early on, um, but it's picked up here as of late, right? So, um, obviously, Stanley Cup winners in 2020 and 2021. And then they were the actual runner up in 2022, right? They were knocked out of the playoffs in the first round by Toronto last year. So they've kind of, you know, kind of had a little dip there, whatever. Um, and then basically, um, then you had the drama with Stamkos and voicing his displeasure with with the the contract extension stuff,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, I knew he wasn't too
Track 1:last season. Yeah, he wasn't thrilled, um, that. kind of thing, so, and then, you know, some of the critiques started to happen you know, because they were outside the top three in the Atlantic Division, right? So, like I said, they were kind of at a goofy spot, um, But as of this year, as the calendar year, this year, January, they've looked pretty, pretty decent. They're on a 21 10 2 record since January 1, and they're the third best percentage, um, point percentage in the Eastern Conference, just through that span, that 6 67, so, um, Yeah, they still have moments of being that dangerous team. Um, you know, but again, Kucherov is just insane. He's out of his mind. He can score at will. Brayden Point is another one. Um, he's on his way for a second season. Straight 90 plus point season, Just think about that 90 points literally in a season is
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, playing some good hockey.
Track 1:Um, you know, um, Stamkos is one goal shy of 30 goals this season or I should say another 30 goal season. Yeah, it's just, um, so they have remnants of that dangerous team that they just used to be a buzzsaw through everybody. Um, Brandon Hangle is another one. He's already matched his career high point from last year at 64. So, you know, he's got what, 10, 9, 10 games left. So he's definitely gonna blow that up. So, you know, um, Um, The deadline edition, right? Declare who's fit perfectly nine points in his first seven games. I mean, you can't do much better than that. Um, Yeah, that kind of thing. So you you got all this, you know, you've got the core pieces, you've got your fill in players. Um, Sergachev is out there, um, long term. Um, so that's the only thing that really kind of concerns me is the after like I said, with Ser with with Sergachev being out, after Viktor Hedman on the defensive side, on the back end, there's a Deep drop off like he's
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:I was gonna say, they're having some real trouble there.
Track 1:he's the only real defensive they really have so
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, which, which could kind of, you know. You know, I mean, Vaskeleski, you're very honored to have him be one of the best goaltenders in the league. But, I mean, that only goes so long, you know, so long, you know what I mean, like so far, especially in the playoff time when guys are going a thousand miles an hour and everybody's putting a hundred percent. So, um, yeah, it'll be interesting to see if that kind of bites them, you know, but, um, yeah, we'll see.
Track 1:Yeah, so we'll see now historically Vassilis, he's having one of the worst seasons of his career, but I mean, if you can't, if you're gonna sit there and tell me with a straight face, straight, straight face that he can't flip the switch and get in playoff mode and fucking go crazy, like,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, I mean, we've seen it. We've seen it before from him. So, I mean, yeah, anybody who knows and watches hockey knows that, you know, yeah, you know.
Track 1:For sure. So yeah, I would not sleep on Tampa Bay. They seem to have that for those flashes of, you know, what they used to be, um, the defense is a little worrisome. Um, but I think if they score enough, I think that can mask some of that and, um, yeah, we'll see what happens, but Matt, did you have any others, any other teams that you think people are sleeping on?
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Um, maybe the Jets, I saw, you know, we talked to them before like, you know, they're could sneak in and make some noise. I mean, who knows? Um, anything's possible in the playoffs. We've seen it, but, um, You know, yeah, with you know, Tyler being there now, which we talked about him before and Colin Miller, you know, five, five and one, so not too bad. I mean, probably better off in my opinion. I don't know, like do you really sneak in and make noise, or do you just kinda I don't know, the Jets are in this like weird middle spot, like a lot of other teams are. You know, it's like, shit, do we, you know, try and go full force and make some noise in the playoffs? Or do we just Try and kind of hang out and see what happens and get some more picks and just rebuild for next year and do some new wheeling and dealing. So, yeah, I don't know, but it'd be interesting to see if Winnipeg could do it because I think they're, I think when they play hard and they play, you know, well, I think they're definitely a good team and they're a tough team to beat. They're, you know, they definitely throw bodies around. They're definitely physical. And they can quick and move when they want to, but it's just depending on if guys are clicking that night, you know what I mean? So I feel like they definitely still need some identity and still need some core pieces there. You need something, you know what I mean? Like you need one or two good big moves maybe in the next offseason or two and just, you gotta get guys that wanna play. together and want to play there, you know, and make some noise and try and win cups. You know, I feel like Winnipeg's ever since they came in, they're not really, you know, they've had their great seasons and whatnot, but like, you know what I mean? They don't have that core player that's really stuck around for years and like set the tone for them, you know? So I think they just need that for their franchise. So hopefully they'll get it.
Track 1:Yeah. I would agree with that. Um, but yeah, I'm very interested to see what Winnipeg does. Um, especially losing guys like Shifley, Kyle Conner, um, Valardi, like those guys for various parts of the season.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah. Big injury bug season for them.
Track 1:Yeah, not to mention Bonus has walked away, um, for, like, twice from the team, the coach, so, um, it's very interesting kind of rollercoaster season that they've had as well, so, um, but they do have quite a, you know, enticing, like, groups of forwards, right? Again, like I said, Sheffley, Conner Gabe Velardy, um, Ehlers, Sean Monaghan that they picked up at the deadline, right?
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, Monaghan's solid.
Track 1:Yeah, so they're kind of hard, you know, those groups of forwards are kind of hard to, they're hard to bet against there, but, um, you know, Josh Morrissey on the back end, having another good season, um, Conor Hellebuck, again, one of the better goalies, um, You know, out there, um, just fresh off of signing a almost 60 million contract extension before the season. So,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Best thing they ever done.
Track 1:oh yeah, he looks great.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:tell you what.
Track 1:it's crazy. Um, but yeah, I would say that there's you know, there's, uh, he's contending for the Vesna, right. So
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:As he should.
Track 1:Yeah, absolutely. So, um,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, I feel like Kyle Connor, like he's very good, right? But I just, I have that issue with just him like being so injury prone. And I just don't know if he'll ever be that guy because of that. You know what I mean? And it's a real bummer because man, he has great seasons when he's fully healthy, but last season or two, man, he just hasn't been, you know, been on the ice, which is, it sucks. It really does to see such a great kid like that who can make a difference in this game. To just be sidelined with, you know, bullshit injuries all the time. It's gotta be frustrating too for players, you know, for him, especially like, you're like, man, like I can really kick some ass here, but I can't get on the ice. I can't stay on it. You know, it's just like, ah, it sucks.
Track 1:Yeah. it does. Um, see, I'm interested to see what happens again, sort of out there. Oh, good. Just looking at scores here. Toronto beat Washington. So they're not going to crawl up on the flyers tonight. So that's always, that makes me
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah, that Metro is insanely tight. I mean, these last 8, 9, 10 games for that whole, every team in that division is huge. It's playoff, make or break, you know? It's nuts, because there's like 5, 6 teams in that division that are like literally a point or two. Or even the same points. Like, it's nuts.
Track 1:Yeah, it's tight. It's really tight. So speaking of that, I figured we could kind of end on, um, a couple potential playoff matches. Again, it's Thursday here, the 28th, so we're going to look at games that we're playing that are played tonight or playing tonight. Some of them are already done. Some of them are in progress, but I figured it was a good time to kind of see what's out there as far as what we can do. We could potentially be looking at playoff wise and then kind of go into a little bit of a Clinching scenarios to see who can clinch what with how things shake out So as I just said that the Capitals played the Leafs tonight, they Capitals lost five to one to the Leafs so that helps my Flyers and Kind of stay there because they lost as well. My Flyers the Canadians beat them tonight. So Um, we'll see. And then, Matt, you said the Islanders beat the Panthers?
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:3 2. Yeah. Pens won.
Track 1:Penn's won. Yep.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Pens won 3 2 over Blue Jackets.
Track 1:So that's very interesting. Um, so right now, let's see. Um,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Rangers clinched last night, so they were the first out of the match order to clinch. Hurricanes
Track 1:though their hopes the Islanders hosts are dwindling, um, they could wind up as a wild card and they would actually face the Panthers in the first round. So, um, You know, the Islanders beating the Panthers, but you know, bodes well in, in both both categories there as far as gaining ground on people and, you know, kind of playing your potential, um, your potential matchup there. So that's always interesting. Um, Another divisional champ would be, um, um, versus wild card would be the wings against Carolina. I think that was that started at seven 30 to the night, Our time. That's okay, okay. So the Hurricanes, Hurricanes stomped them. Okay, which makes sense. They're just insane.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Hot. Hot right now.
Track 1:Yeah. exactly. So there's a first round matchup potentially right going on right now. The Golden Knights and the Jets. We just talked about that. Um, they're still going, I think. Um, let's see. And that was, um, that was a first round matchup last year as well. So it could very well be a first round matchup this year again. So
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:in a row. Yeah.
Track 1:in Vegas and Winnipeg, um. It looks like, just the way the lines are gonna fall, it looks like Edmonton and the Kings are gonna square off in the first round for a third straight postseason. That's pretty
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Wow, which I always feel like it's a good series between those two teams. Like they, they always, they both always throw the bodies around and they play physical every time. So yeah, I always like
Track 1:I'm in there. I'm here for it, baby. Um, but yeah, so that's always a good one. They're playing now as well. And then I want to say, um, Two teams out, two of the best teams out west, right? The Stars and the Canucks. They're They started at 10, so they're playing now. It's probably the end, you know, almost at the end of the first period by now. Um, and so, so that'd be great. Um, Oh, so here's the other thing. Um, this is a potential Stanley cup matchup right here. It's going to be the New York Rangers and the Colorado avalanche. They're playing, they started at nine tonight, so they're
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:0
Track 1:So. Okay. All right. So nobody's given up anything yet, but I mean, it's a busy night out there tonight. Thursday night hockey. Look
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Tell you what, 14
Track 1:A lot of implications. Yeah, it's crazy. A lot of implications. A lot of going on. Um, there's no score. Dallas and Vancouver What else? Um, Did your pens won tonight? 3 2. That's always good. Um, Vegas and Winnipeg are tied 1 1. They're in the third. They're late in the third. May see some overtime jams there. So, we'll see. But, um, and then you got LA and Edmonton. Edmonton's up 1 0 with about halfway through
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:yeah, Connor McDavid just scored, so it was 1 0. Because I just checked it a couple of minutes ago, it was 0 0.
Track 1:so all kinds of games going on right now with all kinds of implementations. So, just a quick look at clinching scenarios of who can clinch what. Um, Florida could have clinched tonight if they would have beat the New York Islanders. Either in regular, in regulation or in overtime. Um, Let's see, it says they're also, they can also clinch if they, let's see. Oh, well, none of that came true because they lost, so, um, okay, Oh, so they did clinch, and it says that the Panthers will also clinch if the Red Wings lose to the Hurricanes in regulation, which they did, so Florida's in.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:okay,
Track 1:that to say Florida is in those of you keeping scored home.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:all these weird stipulations.
Track 1:I know. It's like, okay. Alright. So the hurricanes are in as well. They could clinch if they beat the Red Wings in any fashion, which they did. Um, and then the Bruins will clinch if the Red Wings lose to the cane. So the brew, the Bruins clinched as well?
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah. Both of those things happen. The Flyers needed to lose and the Wings needed to lose and both of those teams lost.
Track 1:yep, exactly. They were covered from all fronts.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:there you go. No worries.
Track 1:there. Um, the stars can clinch tonight if they beat Vancouver in any fashion, regulation or, OT. Um, yep. And then they said they will also clinch a berth if they lose in overtime or a shootout and the Blues beat Vancouver. Beat beat Calgary or the wild lose to the sharks. And those games are going on right now, but Dallas can handle its own business. If they just beat Vancouver, then they don't need any help. Um, let's see. And then the reverse for the Canucks. So the Canucks will. Clinch a playoff berth If they win. against the stars. Yeah. And then they also said the blues blues loose in flames or the wild loose in the shark. So it's the Same stipulation of help.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:reverse. Yeah.
Track 1:Yeah. And just reverse. Yep. And then finally the Colorado avalanche can clinch with a win of any kind against the Rangers, um, coupled with a blues loss. So they need to win against New York And a Blues
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:lost. Okay.
Track 1:So that'd be good. So there's a lot of crazy,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Statistics and stipulations, yeah.
Track 1:yeah. always kind of crazy. So, and the flyers and caps are right there. Flyers are 82 points. Caps are at 81. Devils are at 76. Islanders at 75, but they got a couple of good games coming up against teams. So. Tampa Bay and Flyers being two of them. So they could really spout up there. Um, If they needed to. So, um, Yeah, so I think the tightest one right now is gonna be Flyers and Caps. Devils are outside with 76 points. So they can get up there. Um, just depends on how the things fall. So, very interested to see what happens there. Um, Again, you know, two, um, in the two division, or I should say in the in the Eastern conference, you got the two divisions that are super tight as well. So, um, I'm just the Tampa Bay it's 87 points. So yeah, so there, man, that wild card is going to be so crazy tight.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Oh, yeah. It definitely
Track 1:forward to that. So,
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Yeah.
Track 1:That was kind of it. Just a couple playoff recaps, um, clinchers and a couple different scenarios. So, like I said, we've been away for a few weeks, tending to some other things, but we'll be back here, um, you know, with our weekly show here. So, really coming into the playoff, Implications and the playoff time so a lot of coverage here. So hang with us and come hang chat, whatever Um follow us on socials that kind of thing. So, we had a couple weeks to catch up here so it's a bit of a longer one, but um, I think I think we did y'all some justice and um, And we'll be with you for the playoff run here. Just see what happens and who gets in and I'm ready for it, I can't wait. Playoff hockey is the best in sports, I don't I'll say that to anybody I love it.
matt_1_03-28-2024_211552:Oh, absolutely. It's the best time of year. Spring starts coming around, you know, the daylight gets a little longer. The weather gets more nicer as the days go on and just, you know, just like a month and a half of just awesome hockey playoff. So, yeah we're really, I mean, you know, obviously everybody's excited if you're an NHL fan, but we're super excited because I think there's going to be a lot of different teams and. You know, you know, I don't think you're gonna see the same old teams. Like I said, you know, we talked about the canes, we talked about the Canucks, you know, those underdog teams and you know, the ones that don't get hyped up and talked about all the time, like the you know, like the other media does. So it'll be interesting to see. But yeah, only a couple teams clinch so far. Like we talked about Boston, Florida, um, Rangers, Carolina, those are the teams that have clinched so far. And then teams that were already eliminated San Jose. Anaheim, Chicago, Arizona, and Columbus. So those guys are out. So, with that being said, Yeah, I think we'll catch up probably sometime next week with everybody.
Track 1:Yeah, we'll get out of your hair for now. So I appreciate everybody joining. Again, um, a little bit of business. Don't forget to come hang with us on Twitter or X and Instagram at ShootThePuckPod. Um, you can find us there and with all the, um, you know, in that hockey community.
