The old jarhead is back with great career advice.

• The advice is guaranteed to work and is based on the BAMCIS concept: Begin planning, arrange for the reconnaissance, make the reconnaissance, complete the order, issue the order, and supervise.

• This concept was taught at the beginning of his Marine Corps career and can be applied to any job or situation.

• Begin planning by setting aside time to think about what needs to be done.

• Arrange for the reconnaissance by talking to other people who may be involved.

• Make the reconnaissance by gathering all necessary information.

• Complete the order by delegating responsibilities to team members.

• Issue the order by clearly communicating tasks and expectations.

• Supervise and make yourself available for guidance and help as needed.

• BAMCIS can be helpful in a variety of situations and should be customized to fit your specific circumstances.

Right , and given that this is the second , I'm in the second hundred of my podcast , I thought it would be good if I went back to something I learned about at the beginning of my time in my beloved Marine Corps and then try to relate that to your outstanding careers . Bamsis , okay , b-a-m-c-i-s . What does it mean ? Begin planning , arrange for the reconnaissance , make the reconnaissance , complete the order , issue the order , supervise , right , bamsis ? Pretty simple , pretty straightforward , right ? This was we learned we're taught in the beginning of your Marine Corps career and leadership . Okay , it's a tactical order . For example , your unit is told to attack and secure a prominent terrain feature like a hill , so you need to tell your subordinates what to do to accomplish that mission . Bamsis , in Marine Corps terms , right , begin planning , arrange for the reconnaissance , make the reconnaissance , complete the order , issue the order and then supervise . So let's put that in terms that can be useful to you , right ? Unless you're out there as an early platoon commander getting ready to go down a TBS , you probably never heard of Bamsis before .

So here's the situation I'm going to give you , like a hypothetical situation . You're told by your boss that you and your team need to accomplish something , say arrange for a meeting with another company or another part of your own company . Once you're told to do this , you should set aside some time to think about what in your team have been told to do . That's the B or the begin planning part . Then you think about all the other folks that you need to talk to to make this meeting go row , go well , maybe you need to talk to the IT folks or the facility folks or anybody right , even your boss , right ? So you call them and you say hey , it , you have some time this afternoon . I need to talk to you about next week's meeting . That's like the A . Or arrange for the reconnaissance part , okay , only it's not in the military . You get it Now . You have the information you need , right . So you think about what your team will do next .

Speaker 1

So well , actually I left out the MC . That's what happens when you get old , right ? So then you go and you talk to those IT folks , right , you go and you sit down with the facilities , people . That's the same thing as the M , the make , the reconnaissance . So now you have the information you need , right , you know the IT , you know all the other stuff . Right Now you need to think about who on your team is going to do what .

Speaker 1

That's the C or the complete , the plan part . So now you get your team together and you give each of them their jobs and they're going to support that meeting , and that's the I or issue the order part . And finally , there's the most important part supervise . You got to supervise , you got to make yourself available if they need guidance and help , as you and your team make this meeting go great . So there you have it . Very simple BAMSIS for your career . Try it , it works , make it your own . Well , that was another great piece of advice from the old jar heads time in the Marine Corps , and thanks for listening . And if you want even more great advice , get a copy of my book Find a Job that Fits your Life . It's available on Amazon . You won't be disappointed . So thanks and suffer , take care Bye .
