He introduces a concept adapted from the Marine Corps planning process, defining limitations as a combination of constraints (things you must do) and restraints (things you cannot do). Using relatable examples, such as homeowners association rules and professional scenarios, he emphasizes the importance of recognizing and asking about these limitations to avoid trouble and maintain a successful career. The episode concludes with a teaser for the next topic on personal limitations and a call to action to check out his book, "Find a Job That Fits Your Life."

Hi folks. Well, the old jarhead is back to give you great career advice, career advice that I guarantee you will help you and if you listen to what I say, you will have a better career. It's just that simple, I guarantee it. So let's get going on today's podcast. And today I'm going to talk to you about an important subject that a lot of folks are not aware of Yet. These things constantly get people in trouble, and in trouble is rarely something that's good for your career. So listen up, as the old jarhead lays out something you need to hear.

Speaker 1:

So today's podcast is about limitations. Okay, I don't know what you're expecting to hear, but you're going to get limitations here, as per the Marine Corps planning process that I have adapted to be good career aiding advice. So what are limitations? Well, one of the best ways to explain them is that they are made up of two parts. One is constraints, the other is restraints. Okay, so this is how you need to think about them Constraints are things that you need to do, and restraints are things that you need to do, and the restraints are things that you cannot do. Go over that again. Okay, restraints, okay, things that you cannot do. Constraints things that you need to do. See how I reversed the order there just to kind of make you think Okay, so we all live with them, right? So if you live in a homeowner's association, a house in a homeowner's association that dictates how your property is to be maintained, you have a constraint, such as you must mow your lawn weekly. You may also have a restraint such as you cannot leave your empty trash cans in front of your house after the trash has been collected front of your house after the trash has been collected. See, pretty simple, huh.

Speaker 1:

But let's take it a little further. Okay, let's take it and talk about why they're important to your career. Because if you're not aware of your company's or your boss's limitations on you, you could end up in trouble. Let's say, for example, your boss says to you that she wants you to go to a big conference in London. Your first thought is yay, I get to go to London.

Speaker 1:

But there may be limitations that you need to know, and if you're not told them, you need to ask. You need to know and if you're not told them, you need to ask. Okay, for example, one constraint might be that she wants you to attend one particular seminar during the conference, or maybe that you must submit a travel expense within a week of returning home. A restraint could be that you're not allowed to fly business class or that you cannot expense alcohol purchases during your trip. The point here is that if you violate any of the above limitations, you could find yourself in hot water with the boss, and that's not a good thing. Now you're thinking to yourself should you have been told these things ahead of time? Yep, but things don't always work out that way. The point here is that if you're not and you're not sure what to do, then instead of guessing, you need to ask what your limitations are. Don't just leave it to chance, right? That's not a way of running your career. If you don't know, make sure you ask. Well, that's it for now. I hope you learned something.
