Speaker 1:

All right, folks, I am back with another great podcast. This is Dennis Guzik with the Be the Ultimate Podcast, where I take my experience in the Marine Corps and the corporate world and use that to teach you something that will make your career better. So it's all good. So when I was stationed at Marine Barracks, washington, also known as 8th and I it's the oldest post of the Corps and the land that it's on was selected by President Jefferson, so that makes it pretty old right On this post there's an officer's called the Center House, and now I am on the Board of Advisors for a nonprofit that supports the Center House, the Center House Association.

Speaker 1:

Anyway, we were there with the officers of the mess and we had a presentation by Lieutenant General United States Marine Corps retired and his focus is on discipline and how important it is to achieving a mission, and he also showed a video of Coach Nick Saban like him or not, I know there's a lot of feelings about that but that echoed what the general was presenting and that is what I want to chat about today. So Coach Saban presented his thoughts on how to achieve a very effective organization, and there's no doubt that he's done that during his coaching career, right, great college football programs wherever he went. Lieutenant General Farnese's point was that this applies to any organization. So what did Coach Saban say? Right? Basically, to make this successful organization, there were three things that were necessary. The first, okay, is a vision for what that organization wants to achieve, what it wants to be. Without some sort of goal, it's impossible to give anything to achieve anything, because you don't know what you're aiming to do. You're kind of operating in the dark, not real good, right? Okay, so the first part is have a vision. The second part that the coach sees as necessary is to have a process that will allow you to achieve that goal. Having a goal is necessary, but not sufficient. Right, the leader and the organization needs to have a process that will achieve the vision. It's kind of a map that are followed from where you are today to where you want to be in the future, which your vision. Okay, so we got a vision and we got a process. That's all you need, right? Nope, the last part of what Coach Saban presented was the need for discipline, and by this he means the discipline to execute the process that leads to the vision. It's easy to design a process that leads to a successful outcome. The hard part is following that process. Take dieting, for example. It's easy to say I want to lose 10 pounds the vision and it's easy to design a program that will lead to that weight loss the process. The hard part comes from following that diet, and I think anybody can relate to that. So now, as usual, the old jarhead will translate some of this to your career things that are going to help you.

Speaker 1:

First, for your career, you need to have that vision. You need to think about what you want in your career. For example, you may want to become a CEO someday or a professional ice skater. Maybe you want to own your own plumbing business or become a firefighter. You need to decide on that vision or goal and then think about the steps you need to take to get there. Maybe you need an advanced degree or maybe you need to apprentice in your chosen trade. Maybe you need to put in that 10,000 hours of practice in your sport or on a musical instrument. You need to lay that out, preferably on a timeline, and you need to make sure that the process you develop will lead you to your vision. And some good news on the side I'm working on a webinar to teach planning. But that's for the future, so look for it, it'll be great.

Speaker 1:

Okay, then comes the hard part. You need the discipline to stay with that process. Right, you made your plan. Now you need the discipline to stay with that process. The process may change, right? Your plan may change with life, but don't worry about it. At least you got something to change off of. You're not just rambling around. One other tip if you want to stick with your plan in other words, have discipline then tell other people about your goal and your plans. Studies have shown that you're much more likely to stay on your process and achieve your results whether it's a diet or getting an MBA if you've told others about your plan. Okay, that was today's podcast, but I'll leave you with this. The technique that I just went through applies to anything you want in life. Think about that. Pretty powerful stuff. Well, enough rambling from the old jarhead. Have a vision, develop a plan and stick with that plan. Have that discipline to stick with it. That's the message. Thanks for listening and bye, thank you, thank you.
