Speaker 1:

You know what I do here weekly is talk about all things pop culture, whether it's film, music, television, sports, video games, to give you some insight, some knowledge, just to kind of put you up on game on what's going on within the week. It's past. So, as always, let's start the show off with film. Most popular films right now according to Rotten Tomatoes Argo, the Spy Thriller starring Bryce Dallas Howard, sam Rockwell, henry Cabo and John Cena. American Fiction, one of my faves. This hilarious film features Jeffrey Wright and Tracy Ellis Ross and is humorously confronts our culture's obsession with stereotypes. And lastly, a film that I just checked out last week, which I would definitely, if you're a historical buff and want to check it out Oppenheimer. The film explores Oppenheimer's scientific achievements, personal struggles and moral dilemmas and political controversies. I wish I had time to really break this film down and go into detail, but let's just say too much is given. Much is required. I would also say that with all that power comes great responsibility. I don't want to sound like Uncle Ben with Spider-Man, but yes, it just seems like. For Oppenheimer, being a man who was to be the first to race to create the first bomb that would bring about peace, had to deal with his own personal dilemmas and personal relationships with outside of work and inside of work, and the jealousy and hatred that came from that that ultimately ended his career with becoming a nuclear physicist. All right, new releases coming up for this upcoming week.

Speaker 1:

Here we have. Code 8. Part 2 is an upcoming Canadian science fiction film that serves as a sequel to the 2019 Code 8. It has two people with special abilities who team up with a teenage girl seeking justice for her slain brother at the hands of corrupt police officers Dune 2. It continues the story of Paul Charities, a young man who joins the Freeman, a nomadic people living on the desert planet Arcus, also known as Dune. Paul discovers that he has a special destiny and dangerous powers as he leads a rebellion against the tyrannical forces that oppress his new home and threaten the galaxy. Promo Mista Alejandro, an aspiring toy designer from Al Salvador who moves to New York City to pursue his dream but faces the risk of losing his work visa. He gets a job assisting Elizabeth, an eccentric art world outcast and eccentric outcast as well, who might be able to help him stay in the country. And then, lastly, a Netflix film from Adam Sandler Spaceman, an astronaut who encounters a mysterious creature on his solo mission to the edge of the galaxy. The film is based on the novel Spaceman of Bohemia starring Adam Sandler.

Speaker 1:

Now films with great replay value. We have here Dumb and Dumber and tells the story of two dimwitted friends who travel from Rhode Island to Colorado to return a briefcase full of money to a woman they both have a crush on. I know where that it's a part of the kidnapping scheme. Yeah, I remember seeing this film at a drive-in. Classic Jim Carrey, jeff Daniels, harry and Lloyd. They made Dumb and Dumber 2 and then they also created a prequel when Dumb and Dumber when Harry met Lloyd. The prequel was okay. Dumb and Dumber 2, though actually kind of picked up, the sequel was actually great.

Speaker 1:

I would definitely say probably my best takeaway scene from Dumb and Dumber is just Lloyd really falling in love with the woman who has no intentions on liking him. But he really thought delivering this briefcase halfway across the country was going to win him some type of brownie points. And what was it? He said Mary, I desperately want to make love to a schoolboy, trying to say that to her. But I think what he was trying to say was I desperately want to make love to you like a schoolboy. And he knew it didn't come out right. And she just looked at him crazy the whole time and I think giving the guy rat poison instead of giving him his ulcer pills, man, oh yeah, that was crazy. That was real crazy. Catch Me, if you Can.

Speaker 1:

Based on the true story of Frank Abagnale Jr and notorious con artists who impersonate various professions and forge millions of dollars in checks. In 1960s he was pursued by the FBI, carl Hatterty, who eventually became friends in his mentor Best film. I will probably say it's probably one of my top five films because it's a true story. Now, I know probably within the film there's some liberties taken there, but ultimately just seeing Frank Abagnale Jr go through what he did at an early age as a con artist and really making it work for him. It was crazy, it was really crazy seeing that, and probably one of the best performances I've seen from Leonardo DiCaprio. Now, lastly, here Bad Boys Detectives Mike Lowry and Marcus Burnett have 72 hours to find $100 million worth of hair on before and internal affairs shuts them down. Matters become complicated when Lowry and Burnett have to switch places to convince a witness of the murder to cooperate.

Speaker 1:

So you've got the classic buddy cop film with Mark Lawrence, will Smith, I want to say I've seen this in the movie theaters either with my aunt or my father, but seeing the film, probably about a couple weeks or a month after it came out, was great. I want to say Michael Bay, known for his action films and big explosions. Great film actually, from both, because at this point in time you have Will Smith, at that point in time, just coming off of Fresh Prince, and then Martin Lawrence, at that point in time, might have been just coming off of Martin, and we all know the Martin Lawrence sitcom. So to see both of them going from one extreme to another, from comedy to action, and then still putting little implements of comedy within this action film was great between them. So, with that being said, first to Bad Boys. To me, again, it's the only Bad Boys you really need to see, and they could have stopped there All right.

Speaker 1:

Now on to music. Nice musicians from Arizona. We have Alice Cooper, known for his unique blend of shock rock and glam metal, hits like Skulls Out and no More, mr Nice Guy. Stevie Nicks, as a member of the legendary rock band Fleetwood Mac, and successful artist Linda Ronstadt, born in Tucson, linda Ronstadt is a multi-platinum artist with a career spanning several decades, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. Jim Atkins we're pronouncing it correctly lead vocalist and guitarist of Jimmy Eat World. The band has made significant contributions to the alternative rock scene. Michelle Branch, another talented artist from Arizona, gained fame with her pop rock. Sound like hits like Everywhere and All you Wanted.

Speaker 1:

Here's what's happening in the music world Kanye West and Ty Dalla Signs album Bolters One. They've used that number one on the Billboard 200. With all the controversy, it's still a popular album. People are still wanting it. Just recently, though, it's been taken off of all major platforms and also being able to be purchased. So you basically have to go to the black market and try to find this album.

Speaker 1:

Billboard Top 5. Loving On Me sorry, jack Harlow. Lose Control. Teddy Swims, beautiful Things by Benson Boone. Crawl Summer by Taylor Swift. Snooze by SZA. What is happening in the hip hop and R&B scene? Glad you asked. French Montana, final chapter of Mac and Cheese series entitled Mac and Cheese 5. Surprise, he's still making music. But hey, he's got a fan base, people like him.

Speaker 1:

Tyla is gearing up to release her debut album this year. Current Single is Water, which we've talked about before. Thing Jammin' Like a Foom and that song. You can't go nowhere without hearing it. Sza just talked about her a second ago has fans eagerly awaiting her Lana album. Playboy Cardi has a new project called Music that should be coming out soon. Anticipated album releases for March and April Ariana Grande, eternal Sunshine, march 8th. Kanye West entire dollar sign Vultures, volume 1 on March 8th. Vultures Volume 3 on April 5th. Justin Timberlake everything I thought it was comes out on March 15th. Shakira Woman no Longer Cry, march 22nd. Beyonce, act 2, march 29th she's got that song. I believe it's Texas Hold'em. And then here's truly, taylor Swift, the tortured poet's department, april 19th.

Speaker 1:

Now on to sports MLB. Thanks to the role change, bay Stilling made a comeback last season. In 2023, there were 3,503 bases stolen across MLB the most in a season since 1987. This represents 40% more than what was saw in 2022. Alright, everything show. Hatani oof I can't never get his name right does or does not do continues to be a major focus on Dodgers camp At Tony at 10,. Uh, ender, sorry, this first season with the Dodgers after a second major right elbow surgery. This performance will be watched closely. Yeah, their pain, I do like uh was like 132 million or it might have been more than that. So, yeah, they want to make sure their investment is returning dividends. Pablo Sandoval, who's eagerly trying to make his comeback into the MLB so return to Oracle Park for Mike Murphy's induction into the giant's wall of fame is in serious talks about making a comeback to the majors.

Speaker 1:

Now the NBA. We saw Dame Lillard and Mack McClung um repeated a starry three point contest in Dame in one, and then the AT&T slam dunk champion uh for Matt McClung. So that was a highlight of uh last week. After Sabrina uh faced off against Steph Curry in the three point contest. Steph Curry won. And then Adam Silver has some real concerns about the future of the NBA after the face of the NBA is gone, meaning LeBron. I mean thank you here After LeBron's departure, which could be in roughly maybe three seasons who could take up the mantle? I mean, you've got guys like Katie Steph Curry, but they're like right right under him, so they're not too far gone where they'll be gone too. So, with that being said, you got to start looking at the younger generation under guys like Steph Curry and Kevin Durant.

Speaker 1:

If I were to put my money on, it won't just be one face, it'll be, you know, a collective. I would say right now I Would go with Devin Booker from the Phoenix Suns and Luca Dantige from Dallas Mavericks. They have a good rivalry right now Between those two. Whenever they play each other, they're always giving their their best blows. They've got like this magic bird Rivery that you know you seen in the 80s. So, with that being said, I would see those two being the mental and I mean that's actually perfectly fine because it's been done before again, like I said, you know, with magic and bird, they co-own the NBA during the 80s and then, towards their departure, michael Jordan took over the 90s. So I Think that would be a good idea for those two. If not, then you could look no further than San Antonio Spurs new rookie draft pick, victor women Yama from France. They're already kind of gearing that guy up, so I would say it's gonna be one of those three. You know it's either gonna be two, two hits facing being the face of the NBA, or one. So that's what we could look at.

Speaker 1:

The NFL Patriots in time. Pro bowler Matthew Slater has announced his retirement. Nfl French Franchise tag window has been placed on T Higgins, the wide receiver, and also linebacker Josh Allen. There are ports that the Bears are fielding trades for Justin Fields. Bucking ears Evans there's on track to become a free agent.

Speaker 1:

I'd assume, though, the Buccaneers Tampa Bay are gonna be looking to. You know, try to Coat some in a coming back, cuz they really had a good season. They finally found their their lane with Baker Mayfield. I think what they've got there, they can just build on to it. It will be great. And then Jimmy G, jimmy Garoppolo, has been banned for two games to start this season for PDs performance enhancement drugs. Not really sure what drugs they were, but they go against the NFL rule of what you can and what you can't take for supplements and drugs. So you know, for all those Raiders fans that were looking for a decent start, now it feels like a bit of a setback with him being sidelined for two games, but as long as they get a good backup and he can at least win those two games, just in time to bring Jimmy back, they should be fine.

Speaker 1:

Nhl we have the Los Angeles Kings riled against the Pittsburgh penguins, late swelling a yard, or Yarmours night I hope I pronounced it right. I know it's yarmour yard, or yeah, yeah, yeah, I did. Yeah, sorry. Mckinnon's home point streak hit 26, leading the avalanche to a win over Arizona, handing them their ninth straight loss. And then the Islanders in UBS arena will host the 2026 NHL all-star game. So that closes out sports.

Speaker 1:

Now we are on to television, popular television shows across different genres. We have one day, a limited series with a 93% approval rating. It beautifully chronicles a passage of time Blending giddy and somber moments in a swooning romantic narrative. So if you're looking for anything that coincides with what I just said there, that's your show. The tourist season 2 continues a twist in turn, keeping viewers guessing. Jamie Doran and Danielle McDonald deliver a palpable performance in their thrilling journey, earning it at 94% rating. Now I've seen the tourists come up a few times on my radar and I think it might be time to Check it out.

Speaker 1:

Halo now, halo, if you've never heard of it, just a backstory, the best way I can put it. It's based on the video game developed by and I was just talking with my cousin the other day, you got to know the Development company correctly. So it's a video game. It's based on the video game produced or created by Bungie 343 and Microsoft Very popular, I want to say. Halo was very popular at it's start, or its origin point would have been who man? It could have been 2003 or 2005, and it's gone on to continue to be One of the best video games that most people love. And it's created, you know, halo, halo 2, halo ODS T, halo 3 and and other halos. Most notable is master chief. But with this one here, with Halo, it's essentially Giving you backstory, giving you the origins of Halo. So everything leading up probably to Halo 1 is my best guess. Now for me to give a little backstory. It's not that I don't like Halo, okay. Essentially what it is is Halo Is Microsoft, and if you know anything about Microsoft and the console wars, microsoft creates Xbox.

Speaker 1:

Okay, I'm me growing up, console wars or consoles in general. It was Nintendo, sega, genesis, I never got a chance to get a super NES. But then, shortly after that, man, what did I have? Sega Saturn, okay. Then after Sega Saturn, it was Nintendo 64 Okay. Then after Nintendo 64, it was PlayStation. Then Then PlayStation 2 no, no, no, no, no, no. Before PlayStation 2, it was Sega Dreamcast, and then it was PlayStation 2. Then, after PlayStation 2, gamecube. Then after GameCube, uh, man, what did I have? Um, playstation 3. And then, somewhere in there, I had won a raffle and got an Xbox 360. So there was a point in time where I had an Xbox 360, playstation 3, and an Nintendo Wii, yes, um, so I had all those consoles and I found myself spending more time on PlayStation 3 because I'm just more familiar with those, uh, the consoles and the game exclusives and the Nintendo Wii.

Speaker 1:

So the Xbox 360 just really didn't get any love. There wasn't really any game that I was playing that often on the 360, even with Halo. Now, one game that I did get introduced was Gears of War, but that was about it, and I played that very subtle. So, with that being said, um, it's not that I wouldn't be into the series, it's just he would have had to have been in deep in the trenches, in the console doors, and really been a big fanboy to me for Microsoft and Xbox to really appreciate Halo. Um, so by the time I got my Xbox 360, they had already, you know, gone far on into the game, to the point where I feel like it would have been very poser of me to even try to get into the game. So I just try to find new franchises within the Xbox 360 to get into, but that was impossible because it was Halo. So with that long-winded story that I just gave you, yes, halo season two reloads on a Shora footing, offering a leaner and meaner dose of sci-fi. It achieves a 94% rating. So, with that being said, my personal opinion is I would love to check Halo out, but I probably won't because I just I just couldn't get behind um, xbox 360 like that. So I have no knowledge, no clue of what Halo really is. I have some formal knowledge, but just Halo itself, no.

Speaker 1:

Now new TV releases. We have life in Beth, season two premiere. After a sudden incident, beth, a seemingly successful woman with a long term relationship and steady career, takes a look back at her career and takes a look back at her career and takes to see who she wants to become the dynasty. The New England Patriots doc new docu series goes inside the NFL franchise 20 year journey from the unique chemistry in that field, six championships, to the internal strife that sparked a turf war. This is going to be really great because this is going to show from point A to point Z in 20 years, so the rise and fall of the New England Patriots, of with most things.

Speaker 1:

They're going to give you the whole complete backstory of the franchise, everything leading up to that point of them drafting Tom Brady, what their thoughts on Tom Brady, and then, you know, having Tom Brady kind of sitting the wings to take over his name escapes me right now. I can see his face and I cannot think of his name, so I have to come back and correct it. But taking over for an injured quarterback and then, during that season, taking over for an injured quarterback to drive them into the playoffs and the Super Bowl, and then putting Tom Brady as a household name and quote, unquote, the start of the Patriot way, then you start to see the maturation of Tom Brady. You get to see the maturation of Bill Billichek as a quarterback not quarterback but a coach and then I would probably say probably middle ground of that docu series are going to see what all of us knew Is it Tom Brady that drives the car or is it Bill Billichek that drives the car His exes and O's versus Tom Brady's being able to execute the plays that are being drawn up and, if you ask me, you needed both of them.

Speaker 1:

I know Tom Brady went on to win a Super Bowl shortly after leaving New England but, if you ask me, the timing and everything was just right, the right condition for him to be in there for that to happen, because shortly after that, trying to defend their Super Bowl, it didn't really go that well. Same I hate to do across another example, but Kobe and Shaq. Shaq went on and went down to Miami after being thrown out by the Lakers, by Kobe, and wins a championship. But the timing and everything was just right to seize the moment, because then, shortly after that, shaq was basically falling apart and then got shipped out of Miami and went to this team, that team, yada, yada, yada. Kobe stayed in LA, finally, eventually found his footing and then won A championship and another.

Speaker 1:

So I still feel though their best chemistry, even though it seemed for the New England Patriots, things were bad in the locker room. Their tensions were high between Tom Brady and Bill Bilecek. But I mean honestly, when you look around at all great sports teams, that's what it is about the success, with all the success, you're going to have conflicting personalities, hard to get along. But when you get on that field, all that's left behind. You get out there and execute on the X and O's and then the next week, yes, you're still going to have interpersonal wars with you. You know your offensive line coach, defensive line coach, your head coach, the owner Robert Brown, the owner Robert Kraft, or a certain quarterback, a backup quarterback, or your wide receiver, your tight end, whatever, or maybe not. You might get along with everybody, but it's just a running theme that I see with very successful teams that they don't. There's no successful team in any sport that does not have personal issues or beefs with players on your team. You know Michael Jordan punched Steve Kerr during the height of their winning of a championship because Steve Kerr basically stood up to Michael Jordan and told him no, essentially, michael Jordan took it some kind of way like one grown man talking to another, being assertive and standing up for himself. Michael Jordan took offense to it and punched him. But you know it's a learning lesson. Sports is competitive but it just goes to show that again, when you're very successful, chemistry matters and learning how to deal with personalities is key and I think Bill Bellachick was great for that and Phil Jackson as well.

Speaker 1:

Kirby enthusiasm season 12, episode 3 vertical drop horizontal tug. Essentially this episode with Larry dealt with Larry eavesdropping on a coach or golf instructor on how to better his swing and it was just accidental. But it was like on this golf course or this golf club country club. He kept running into this guy accidentally and overhearing his conversations of how to better his swing. Let's see, he also gives Susie and Jeff I will Susie's birthday a gift for her birthday a massage gun but ultimately ends up taking it back because she's not using it. Because Ted and I cannot think of Jeff. Larry's ex Cheryl bring a dog as a gift for Susie. So those are some of the highlights there, but overall it seems like as the episodes are picking up with this last season, they're getting better here.

Speaker 1:

Vanderpump rolls season 11, episode 4 dog days of summer, where we find again Tom Sandoval trying to get back into the fold of the group after the Sandoval, him and Tom Schwarz becoming cool. Everybody kind of feeling indifferent now about the whole situation and it seems like those are slowly turning on Arianna Maddox, because she's getting into this frame of successful but also becoming a bit of a mean girl and telling anyone that, hey, if you want to be friends with my ex, that's cool, but you can't be friends with me. So she's ultimately giving these guys an ultimatum and some of these people are having a hard time with that because you know, at one time they were friends with Tom Sandoval. So that's, that's a bit of a dicey situation. And Lisa Vanderpump basically telling all the members of the crew to kind of cool their jets because you know, we don't know what Tom's going through. He could be suicidal, so let's ease up on some of the punishment. So that was pretty much the synopsis there, for Vanderpump rolls Now television shows with great replay volume.

Speaker 1:

Twilight Zone is about ordinary people who find themselves in ordinary, astounding situations, with each trying to solve remarkable manner. It involves futuristic societies, space travel, alien evasions, telepathy, dreams, death and afterlife, time travel and cautionary tales of dystopian societies and conformity. Probably from the throwback, the old school Twilight. One of my favorite episodes would have been. I think a bomb had went off and there was only one man still surviving and the only thing he was left with was books. So he had time. Time was all he wanted to do is be time to himself so that you can read his books. On one chance occasions he remembered where the library was and goes and tries to find the library and reading, finds all the books. Just having a field day, trips and falls, break his glasses. Now he's no good because he can't read, because his glasses are gone. So now he's whimpering and crying. He's like I have all the time in the world to read these books, but now I can't read them because my glasses. So that was an interesting one.

Speaker 1:

Friends. The story, or the series, revolves around six friends in their 20s and early 30s who live in Manhattan, new York City. The main characters are Ross Geller, rachel Green, monica Geller, joey Trebabini If I'm pronouncing his last name correctly Chandler Bing and Phoebe Ruffet. Over the course of 10 years and seasons, these friends go through life lessons, family, love, drama, friendships and comedy. Community.

Speaker 1:

The premise of this show revolves around Jeff Winger, who is a disbarred and suspended from his law firm when he discovered that he lied about having a bachelor's degree from Columbia University. To earn a legitimate degree, he enrolls in Greendale Community College in Colorado. He quickly becomes attracted to his classmate, social activist, britta Perry, and pretends to run a study group in order to spend time with her. They're a group of misfits that attend the study group, form a unlikely community Community, yeah, I got turned on to that like maybe 2011. And been hooked ever since. Now the show is pretty much done, but I do know Donald Glover, which I've mentioned in the past episodes, stated that I think they're going to sit down or the script is done this year and they're going to start trying to do some filming sometime this year for the film to be out, I believe, next year. So they're getting the whole cast together. I don't know about Chevy Chase, though I know there were some some issues there in the past with Chevy Chase, so it may be all the cast that you remember minus Chevy, but other than that, yeah, that show was great. If you've never watched Community, I definitely recommend checking it out.

Speaker 1:

And then, lastly, to close out the show, another favorite genre video games. The latest trends in video games. The CEO of Hell Divers 2, developer Arrowhead cautions against buying the game. Right now the developers response to server issues as the game passes all time stem concurrence of Destiny 2, starfield, believe, halo, grand Theft Auto. I play the game great. It's like Starship Troopers. If you've ever seen that movie, that's essentially what you're doing. You're playing a game of Starship Troopers and Terminator as well. What he means by not buying the game is it's just got a whole lot of game issues. At the time where the servers were not able to hold, they only had like 400,000 worth of spaces for people to log in. Now it's up to 700,000, up to a million. So the game's taken off very successful, more than what they thought it would.

Speaker 1:

Dragon's Dogma 2,. After pricing Dragon's Dogma 2 at $70, capcom is now considering a video game, a price review. So maybe based on the $70, they're not really seeing the sell of the game. So to entice people to probably buy the game is lower the cost. The next gen Xbox console has been confirmed and is touted to be the largest technical leap in hardware generation. They just have the Xbox X and S and now they're coming out with another one. Coming out with another console this soon is crazy, but I guess they want to get ahead of Sony and the PlayStation 5s. My guess Baldur's Gate 3, the game's enormous patch six adds a new and randomized kisses for every romantic partner, and a whole lot more. Yeah, tell me you have a life without telling me you have a life. Nintendo Switch 2, the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 has reportedly been delayed to the early months of 2025. And then Epic Game Stores classic Fallout games will be given away for free later this year. Okay, so if any of you guys are fans of Bethesda and Fallout, be looking out for Epic Game Store to release pretty much the series of Fallout for free.

Speaker 1:

All right, that has been the show King's Perspective. I am King Chill. I hope you found my weekly anecdotes of pop culture fun, funny, amusing and insightful and entertaining. If you do find all that rhetoric that I just spit to be the case, like, comment, subscribe, share, share with your friends, family member, coworker, whoever. But let's get it out there, let's, let's get this thing big and enjoyable. But again, I appreciate you, all my listeners, for coming out and listening to this episode. This is episode 10. I didn't even think I'd be able to get to 10. I honestly thought like when I did one I was going to get like these bad nerves and not come back and like, oh, they're going to hate me, they're not going to like me, or whatever. But obviously you're here, you're listening, so it means that I have something worthy to give or share to you. So I appreciate that. So, again, that's the end of the show. I spent my time. See you next week.
