Speaker 1:

All right, all right, all right. Welcome back to the King's perspective. Yes, that's right, I'm King Chillin'. This is episode 13. 13 weeks in this is crazy. Like to make this many episodes and still going strong, because the listeners, such as yourself, it's still fine to show somewhat, very entertaining, appealing. So I'm really appreciative of that, because this show does not get off the ground, does not continue to go without my loyal listeners. So, again, I appreciate it.

Speaker 1:

And, as always, my show is basically a rundown here of everything in pop culture from film, music, television, sports, gaming and everything in between. At that point. So let's go ahead and get the show started with film. So this one's gonna be a little different. Here I'm gonna go over a recap of the Oscars, just mainly the winners. Okay, so we have Best Picture Oppenheimer, best Actor Cillian Murphy, best Actress, emma Stone, best Supporting Actor, robert Downey Jr, which is interesting in itself because, with all the legal troubles with Robert Downey Jr, with his past and I know you probably don't wanna dredge up the past here, but, robert, it's more of a testament to you, in a sense, of everything that you've gone through. And then you know you've gone straight narrow and had a new lease on life with your career. And it seemed like it started with the Olive Branch, extended from Marvel, disney, with Iron man, and then, once people realized that, you know, Robert was holding himself accountable and still a big name Powerhouse and bringing money to companies at the box office, then other companies started to invest in him and take him serious and give him roles.

Speaker 1:

And then to me, oppenheimer came as a surprise. He was like did not know, like when they were releasing that film, that he would have such a pivotal role in that film. But I didn't know that he was even in the film until, I think, like a week or two before I started to watch it, and that was just like a month ago. And I was like oh, wow, I didn't realize RDJ was in there. And as I began to watch the film and seeing how pivotal his role was, I was like wow, phenomenal acting. So I can see why he got the Oscar for a best supporting actor. Now we have Divine Joy Randolph for best supporting actress, best director, christopher Nolan and that's Rob and Hymer best adapted screenplay for American fiction. So at least American fiction, which I had been, you know, heaping and praising on, won something, and if it's got to win for something best adaptation great.

Speaker 1:

Best original screenplay Anatomy of the Fall. Best animated feature how Do you Live? Best documentary feature 20 Days in MarriPaul. Best international feature film the Zone of Interest. Best cinematography Oppenheimer. Best costume design Poor Things. Best film editing Oppenheimer. Best makeup and hair styling Poor Things. Best original score Oppenheimer. Best original song Barbie. Best production design Poor Things. Best sound the Zone of Interest. The best visual effects Godzilla minus one. I guess you know that's, you know as good as it's gonna get for Godzilla minus one, because that's actually, besides Oppenheimer, a film that's been you know, tearing through the box office. So I'm just surprised I didn't get for anything else besides best visual. But you know that's what it gets, that's what it's gotta get right. Best documentary Short Subject Last Repair Shop. Best animated short film War is Over. Live action short film the Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. So that handles our film.

Speaker 1:

Now we're gonna go on to new releases for this week, films that you should look out for Ghostbusters Frozen Empire. The story follows Spangler's family as they return to the iconic New York City firehouse to team up with the original Ghostbusters. Together they must face an ancient artifact that unleashes evil forces threatening to plunge the world into a second ice age Sounds interesting. Shirley is a biographical drama that portrays the life of Shirley Chisholm, the first black congresswoman and the first black woman to run for president of the United States. Directed and written by John Ridley, the film stars Regina King as Shirley Chisholm, so that's gonna be on Netflix so you can check that out, and that'll be this week. And then we have Sleeping Dog stars Russell Crowe as Ray Freeman, an ex homicide detective with memory loss. In the movie, freeman is forced to solve a brutal murder, only to uncover a chilling secret of his forgotten past.

Speaker 1:

Now onto my favorite genre here of the film, films with great replay value. We have heavyweights. The story revolves around a group of heavyweight kids who is sent to a camp called Hope. Well, it's a heavyweight camp called Hope, sorry For weight loss. The camp's original owners, the Bunchkins, have to sell due to bankruptcy and has bought by a fitness fanatic named Tony Perkins, played by Ben Stiller. So, yeah, it's one of my favorite films, I think mainly because the start of the film lolls you in. Whereas, like, these kids go to this camp for some summer getaway, right, and they essentially just go there and they get away with anything. What then reason on? I mean nothing crazy other than you're just there. You get to kick back, relax, swim, laying the sun, eat, do whatever, and then at some point the camp changes over, as it's mentioned, and then you have Ben Stiller's character come in and actually take these kids to task and try to whip them in shape. So then it's like, okay, now we have all these heavyweight kids revolting against the fitness guru and Ben Stiller and the shenanigans that transpire after that. That makes for a very interesting film, but overall, man, for a kid who was watching it there was probably the actor's age. You wanna see at that time kids acting in films that are relatable, at least age-wise, and some of the shenanigans that they get into. At that point in time and as a summer feel good film, always be one of my favorites.

Speaker 1:

Another one of my favorites here, meteor man Story, follows Jefferson Reed, a mild manner school teacher in Washington DC who gained superpowers after being struck by a meteor. He uses his new abilities to fight against the local gang called the Golden Lords, bringing peace to his community. So little backstory here. This film was, I believe, written and directed by Robert Townsend, which I've talked about before on the show where he created a film called the Five Heartbeats, now Meteor man and Five Heartbeats. I wanna say Five Heartbeats first, then Meteor man, but again it's about a African-American man who was struck by a meteor. He's bestowed superpowers, so essentially he's like Superman, and what's unique about it is not only is he like Superman, but it's when he comes in contact with certain things, depending on what he touches, or when it even comes to books, depending on what he's reading. He has the knowledge like that. So there was one part of the scene where, towards the very, very end, the local gang member other Golden Lords gets a hold of the meteor as well and has the superpowers. So the only way to outsmart him is by throwing certain books that are actually dumb at the super villain. One makes him dumb, and then one was a book about fashion or modeling and he throws the book at him and turns him basically a bit feminine. But then, at the same token, when he touches the book and throws it to the book, they both turn feminine and they have this basic showdown between the two of them in the middle of the street doing a vogue and fashion model runway, right in the middle of the street and they both end up fighting each other. But the thing is with those things, with the power, whatever he touches usually lasts for about maybe no more than 30 to 45 seconds. So you know that having the upper hand for the most part in that battle only lasts about 30 seconds. But overall, another great film by Robert Townsend Actually probably his third, because it's this one then, like I said, five heartbeats, and then if you go all the way back to like the late 80s, you have Hollywood Shuffle, what's a comedy of sorts.

Speaker 1:

And with Hollywood Shuffle it's a almost like a black spoiltation of everything that young Hollywood actors had to deal with certain roles slaves, butlers, graffiti, break, dancing, jive, talking, you name it. So Robert Townsend in that film broke down all the barriers and the walls on that film with all the stereotypes. So yeah, I would recommend Hollywood Shuffle for you if you want to get familiar with him. Five Heartbeats, which I mentioned, but definitely a meteor man. It's got a slew of also Black actors in there Eddie Griffin, you've got Bill Cosby, you've got Sinbad who else was in there? Trying to think who else was in there as his friends, I'm gonna have to go back and look at the list, but those are the ones that come off the top of my head right now. But overall the film was great.

Speaker 1:

So our next film we'll talk about here is blank check, another one of my favorites. The plot revolves around a 11 year old boy named Preston Waters, who is frustrated with his family's frugality. His life takes a turn when he's accidentally given a blank check by a criminal. Preston fills out the check for one million and embarks on a spending spree, buying a house, various luxury, under the alias of a fictitious employer named Macintosh. However, the criminal, along with his accomplices, soon begin to search for Preston to recover the money. So yeah, essentially, how it happens is Preston gets hit by a car. The Criminals like hey, kid, what do you want, you know? Because he's just basically getting out of jail, so he doesn't want any trouble. So he basically says hey, kid, you know, what do you want, you know? He's asking him while he's Trying to help the kid get up and in such a hurry, in a rush, he signs his name, but he forgets to sign how much he's given. The kid gives him a blank check.

Speaker 1:

The kid at the time, criminal genius that he is, realizes he has a blank check, forges it so that it looks legit, goes and caches it and, like it says, goes on a spending spree Even employees, I think at some point in the film, his family to host this lavish party for Macintosh who's his employer? But really his employer is himself. But yeah, he tries to basically just impress everybody and the neighborhood kids and all this other stuff. I think he even tries and press FBI agent that he has the hots for. But what he doesn't realize is this lady that's coming around this, this bank teller, is actually an FBI agent and he's trying to press her, this 11 year old kid trying to Piss and press this late 20s older lady like it. That was only part that was unrealistic about that film, but overall I mean the film was great because you get to see this kid, basically get to go any and everywhere he wants on a budget of a million dollars and buy whatever he wants. So at that time kid like me watching that film was it was the stuff of legends, dreams, alright.

Speaker 1:

So we're gonna move on here to music and we're gonna do my, my genre. Here. Of famous musicians from Colorado we have Philip Bailey of earth, wind and fire, who's known for his four octave vocal range and hits like Reasons and easy lover with his duet with Phil Collins. Now, one thing I will say is, if You've ever heard of earth, wind and fire which I'm sure most of you have reasons Is their claim to fame. Besides September, you can't go anywhere where this song doesn't come on and someone does not try to imitate Philip Bailey singing that four octave. And most of them are dead wrong because they cannot hit those notes. Help, phil Bailey can't even hit himself anymore.

Speaker 1:

Point in case was back in 2002 at the BT Awards, they did a reunion for them. They got all the original members together. They brought up the song reasons. They start playing it. And you know me, at that time I think I was like maybe 1314 wasn't really too familiar with earth, wind and fire, but I knew of them, but not Literally, listening to all their music. I even I knew Someone right. And when Philip Bailey got up there trying to sing his old, his, his claim to fame song within the group, I was like man, just turn this off because it don't sound right. I mean it's. It's like when you start seeing someone who was a former glory, former fame, trying to relive that and it don't work. It was all bad. So Again, there's nowhere you can't go, where the song comes out, where someone does not try to sing reasons. We have Isaac Slade, the lead vocalist and pianist of the fray.

Speaker 1:

I'll turn to rock band with popular songs like how to save a life and, if I believe correctly, how to save a life is Graze Anatomy song. I think they're. I don't know if it is anymore, but I know at one time Graze anatomy and I mean it's still popular, but Within the first season or two that was their intro song or outro song. And then we have Ross Lynch, the pop band. The leader of the pop band are five and the actor best known for roles in movies and TV shows. And then Chris Broderick, guitarist of the heavy metal band Megadeth. And Then in latest music news we have bad bunny surprise fans with an official music video for a choo-pia. You Added Concert Goers. Visa fees touring music artists from overseas are set to increase on April 1st, which can impact a new music discovery in the US due to higher cost.

Speaker 1:

Rihanna performed her first full concert in almost 8 years at a private wedding party in India, so that's a good way for her to start slowly getting back out there, you know, doing some concert by performing at a private wedding. So that's interesting. And I mean, hey, I mean it's not every day that you look and like, hey, rihanna's here, she's performing all her greatest hits. You know, I'm saying who else can say that? Right? And then here's some new music artists to watch out for 2024. Gracie Abrams known for her emotive indie pop sound, gracie Abrams continues to capture hearts with her relatable lyrics and melodies. Fred, again, a producer and artist who's been making waves with his innovative electronic music and unique productive sound. Noa Khan with his folk infused pop. Noa Khan's heartfelt songwriting is earning him a dedicated fan base. And then war and treaty. This duo brings soulful harmonies and a deep connection to their roots and their music. So that ends the music genre.

Speaker 1:

Now we're going to move over here to sports. Mlb. Ellie Dela Cruz hit a massive 470 foot home run during a spring training camp game. He continues to impress fans. And the baseball not baseball, yeah, baseball. I was going to say no, not baseball, but the baseball club with his performance. So keep it up. I'm going to probably butcher this player's name, but bear with me. Shada and Maga made his MLB spring debut, striking out one of the league's best Freddie free man but also allowed a three run homer. Ronald Aconia Jr had an MRI on his knee and is expected to be ready for opening day pinning for the evaluation. You know I've been talking about Ronald for the last couple. He went out with a knee injury, then got a second opinion, so it looks like everything's checking out for Ronald here now. So the way things are checking out, he should be ready for a spring training, all right. And then Wyatt Langford stays hot, smashing two more home runs, drawing attention even on a team that recently won the World Series. So we just talked about that last episode. So he's back at it again For the NBA and WNBA.

Speaker 1:

The 2024 NBA playing tournament is scheduled for April 16th through the 19th, followed by the first round of the NBA playoffs starting on April 20th. I was Caitlin Clark declares for the WNBA. She will skip her final season of college eligibility and enter the WNBA draft. She just scored the most points in the NCAA, I believe, on the women's side, so she just gained a national recognition for that. So I mean it's natural. I mean what more can you do at this point other than at this season what the tourney happening is to at this point, you know, win the championship for the women's and then move on. So I mean there's really not much more you could do unless you want to stay and win another championship and break more records. But you know what else is there to do Other than go to the next level? And then Julius Randall of the New York Knicks is being recognized for his efforts in uplifting and encouraging and supporting the local youth. So that's good on him. Some good news to be in the news for the NBA for him, because for the most part it's always about his play and how he's getting paid so much to do so least. So it's good to hear him do something or get recognized for something good here.

Speaker 1:

Now the NFL some movement going on here. This week Russell Wilson, the former quarterback of the Denver Broncos, has made headlines with his decision to sign a one year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The agreement is reportedly worth around a league minimum of 1.21 million or 1.21 million. That's good for me, because the quarterback situation with Pittsburgh was Kenny Pickett, mason Randolph, mason Rudolph, sorry. And then there was another quarterback there, I think Mitch Trebisky None of them really appealing. So now you've got a seasoned vet who's won a Super Bowl with Russell Wilson and breaking news we just got Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears. So you've got a savvy vet and a young quarterback who has promise where the Chicago Bears gave up on him. So hey, we'll take him. So it's really looking up for the Pittsburgh Steelers this season. There are among ongoing discussions about the star running back, dalvin Cook. The Minnesota Vikings are reevaluating his options and Cook's future with the team remains uncertain. Seems like they're having a bit of an issue there. I'm kind of following up with the Chicago Bears and Steelers here.

Speaker 1:

The top prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft, kayla Williams, a junior quarterback from USC. Williams stands at 6 foot, 1 inch. 6 foot and 1 inch weighs about 220 pounds. The skill set includes natural throwing ability, accuracy, velocity from various arm angles. He excels at powering the ball into tight windows and displays lightning quick hands. Now, with the movement of the Chicago Bears going away from Justin Fields and them trading him to us, the Pittsburgh Steelers, it's kind of a no brainer that the Bears, more than likely, are going to get Kayla Williams and they're building around him. So that's pretty much why they got rid of Justin Fields. They wanted somebody else. They wanted to go with. So it'll be interesting to see how that plays out for them.

Speaker 1:

Kirk Cousins, the former quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings, has made headlines by agreeing with a four year deal worth 180 million with the Atlanta Falcons. This contract actually includes a hefty 50 million guaranteed no, actually not guaranteed 50 million signing bonus. So what incentive do you not have to sign with the Falcons? They're saying, hey, we're going to give you a 50 million just for signing on. So why not? And Kirk Cousins, for all intents and purposes, is not a bad quarterback. There's like A tier, b tier, c tier, and I would say he's about B tier quarterback. So I mean, you really can't go wrong on it.

Speaker 1:

And then onto the NHL. The New York Rangers, a legitimate Stanley Cup contender, the senior season Sorry, I don't know, I'm getting senior this season are rumored to be interested in trading for Jake Glintzil. There we go to boost their championship hopes. The Philadelphia Flyers are exploring various possibilities as the trade deadline is looming. And then the Los Angeles Kings Adrian Kemp is sidelined due to injury, all right. Well, that ends television. I mean sorry, that ends sports. We're going on to television. Sorry.

Speaker 1:

Current popular TV shows the Gentleman season one. The series, spun off from the movie of the same name, takes us into an eccentric version of London's criminal underroll, populated by colorful characters with amusing monikers. So I've watched a few episodes and it's very intriguing and I can see why it's number one on Netflix for the reason I mean it's it makes the crime underworld very appealing and very entertaining. I've along the lines of like good fellas sopranos, things of that nature. The signal season one. This German miniseries takes us on a cosmic journey that blends space exploration with a very human relationship, with very human relationships and mysteries. And then the three body problem. The story unfolds across continents, decades and involving five billion friends who make groundbreaking discoveries as laws of science unravel, as a threat looms, an emergence forcing them to confront humanity's greatest danger.

Speaker 1:

Okay, we're going to move on here to most popular and trending TV shows right now. Mary and George, a limited series brought in and rolled in a relevant by Julian Moore in a top form. This show is regal, is a regal treat for fans of a frothy court intrigue, american conspiracy, the octopus murder, season one. Gripping series with an 88% approval rating House of Ninja, season one. A perfect score of 100 for this intriguing show that we're moving on here to TV shows with replay value.

Speaker 1:

Mad Men equal parts. Beautiful and not elistic. Mad Men is not only one of the greatest TV shows of all time but highly rewatchable. Set in the 1960s advertising world, it goes into complex characters, societal changes and stunning visuals. Famous actor John Hamm has come out from that show probably one of his best roles. I mean he's acting in things of this nature. But like when you think of mad men or when you think of John Hamm you think of mad men, they're synonymous. There's symbiotic relationship there at this point.

Speaker 1:

The office the US version is a mockumentary style sitcom set in a mundane office environment. Quirky characters, hilarious situations and witty humor make for a perennial favorite. I've watched a few episodes. I haven't sat down and watched like an entire season one, two and three but from what I have seen it's a great show. The boss Michael is very weird, it's the best way to put it. It's just not very self-aware of himself, or if he is, he just doesn't care. And then the white in the office, very shrewd character, very rude, very anti-social, like Stanley, just doesn't really give a care. This basically is in the cut in the corner. Just basically does the bare minimum of work just to get through each and every day. Jim and Pam, the office couple lovers, always getting it to some type of hijinks, involving the white as well. So it makes a very interesting show. Sherlock. Now, this one is, with Benedict Cumberbatch, modern adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's detective stories. As again, benedict Cumberbatch portrays Sherlock Holmes and the clever mysteries are worth revisiting. Alright, so that ends television.

Speaker 1:

So now we're going to move over here to what's just happening in video games right now, which is my favorite. Get away from the mundane of life here, break away with some technology, some world submersion, fantasy. So Ken, after 22 years of delay, the action role playing game Ken is finally being released for Game Boy Advance players in 2024. Game Boy, well, no wait, wait, game Boy Advance players in 2024. There we go. Originally planned for launch in 2002.

Speaker 1:

This game has been highly anticipated by fans for the handheld console. So 22 year delay and now it's finally being released on Game Boy Advance. Do they even still have those in circle? Well, they probably are in circulation, because you can buy them, probably from Amazon or eBay. Who else? Who else is out there, one of those after markets? But I know probably those consoles are not still being created in factories. I think that's probably done at some point. But that's interesting to see that a game is still finally, after 22 years, is finally finished and, for those fans that were waiting for it, now have the opportunity to play it.

Speaker 1:

Mlb the show 24 is now available on PlayStation, xbox and Nintendo consoles. Sports fans can dive into the baseball simulation game starting March 19. Now some who have Xbox if they had the game pass I know they were playing it as early as I think it would have been Tuesday or Friday of the week before the 19th and then those who don't have an Xbox game pass. And let's just say you have a PlayStation right and that'd be PlayStation four, playstation five. If you do the preorder, it gives you at least three days in advance. So then at least you're playing it by, which would be Sunday, so three days before, because when it drops on the 19th, that would be no, no, no. You get to play it on Saturday, that would be the 16th. So you get to play it at least three days before it drops. So you're looking at Sunday money. So, yeah, drops on Tuesday, the 19th, so you get to play that Saturday or maybe even Friday, which would be the 15th, so either way that game's out.

Speaker 1:

If you're looking for something to play other than Madden and the game that we don't speak about anymore NBA 2K, which is actually what Twitter likes to call it now, nba casino, because of all the my team that most people like to play on there, but always having to spend money for the best cards you know. And then the change yet you have to buy the best cards through the pack market and when you buy these cards to the pack market, it shows you what the odds are of getting the featured players that are being featured in these packs. So one week could be like oh, it's going to be an overall 100 check with Penny Hardaway, kevin Durant, john Morant and, to round it out, you could say like a Moses Malone right, all big heavy headers, but you have to buy packs. Those packs cost you somewhere. Well, depends on how many packs you want. So if you want a 10 pack or 20 pack you could be looking at, you have to buy empty or VC. Well, vc now, but you'd have to buy VC. So a 10 packet possibly cost you like $30. 20 pack cost you around 50. And then let's say you do that and you go with the 20 pack and you're opening these packs, hoping that you pull all the players and you don't, because the odds are horrible. So now you're you're left defeated, ameliorated, but there are some people that still come back and buy the next Friday, which are of whatever future cards may be of players.

Speaker 1:

But I think with the MLB the show, like I said, it's a good break from Madden NBA 2k, where you can just play the game, not have to worry about buying packs. You just play the game, naturally, and as you play the game you get XP, and as you get XP you get rewarded up to a certain tier level and you unlock free packs that actually have cards in them of those future players and you get to actually pick them. So I mean it's a win, win with MLB the show 24. And I actually played MLB the show 23. And it's it's, it's probably one of the best sports games that you can have fun with and just relax and don't have to worry about much and not spend anything as well.

Speaker 1:

And then another release that came out here for all my Star Wars fans. We have Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection, compilation of classic Star Wars games available on PC, playstation, xbox and Nintendo March 14. So that just released on Thursday, that just passed. And again, if you're into Star Wars and you like Battlefront, battlefront 2, or any of the other Star Wars games that are in in that compilation, this is your jam, this is your go to, this is this is the game that you would want to pick up. So that's it for video games and that's essentially it for the show. I know this show seemed like it went by pretty quick, but you know again, I appreciate all of my loyal listeners out there. This show would not be it without you. Episode 13 down in the books I'm King chill and this is the king's perspective. Oh, wait, wait, wait before we go. Special shout out. I've got to read this off.

Speaker 1:

Special shout out to NC State Men's basketball. They are the 2024 ACC champions, winning five games in five nights. They beat number 15, louisville 94 to 85. They beat number seven, syracuse 83 to 65. They beat number two, duke 74 to 69. They beat number three, virginia 73 to 65. And then, lastly, they beat number one UNC 84 to 76.

Speaker 1:

Special team here. Special, special, special team. Shout out to DJ horn. Shout out to DJ. I Can't even get his name on him. So so, but they burgs. There we go, man.

Speaker 1:

Mike McConnell, let's see. Jayden Taylor. Am I missing anyone else? Morsell, I Feel like I'm missing somebody else. No, I think that's pretty much all the big heavy hitters. But shout out To NC State men's basketball for winning the ACC championship, because a lot depended on them winning this. If they didn't win this ACC championship, it pretty much ended their season and Pretty much they wouldn't be going into the March Madness Turning for the national college national championship title. So Picture with me you have to win all five games, starting on Tuesday through Saturday. So again those teams I listed off that started off with Tuesday with Louisville and ending with UNC on Saturday, and they won each and every game and a lot of those games they were against ranked opponents that were one, two and three, 17 and 15 seed, while NC State is a 10 seed. So winning this championship is the first that they've done since 1987. And then to this gives them an automatic been into the March Madness AC ACC but March Madness NCC College national championship title. So They'll be waiting to see where they are seated, going into March Madness. So that was my special shout out.
