Multiplying your faith and leaving a legacy. So many people try to leave a different type of legacy as they, depending on how they live their life, the resources that they have. And so I don't know if you've seen people in different areas. I've got to live in a few farming communities, and uh having a piece of property, clearing the rocks, clearing the land, putting in drain tiles, making great farm fields, and building houses on the farm property is a way that farm dads and granddads try to leave a legacy. I think I mentioned before that when we were ministering in Forest City, Iowa, that there was a family that had the farm and they had the big house up here and they had the little house down the hill. So at the time, the uh main family uh lived here, and the parents, grandma and grandpa, lived down in the little house. And as it was assumed as the years churned on that uh one of the kids would get married, that they would live in the big house, and the couple, the family couple here would move down into the grandma and grandpa house, and they'd keep the farm going, and they'd keep that going. So caring for the farm, uh improving the farm was a way to pass on a legacy. Often people will build a business to pass on to their family. Uh they pass on generational wealth, uh, they have maybe they have collections, uh, maybe they pass on skills, uh, maybe they pass on recipes. Have you ever gotten grandma or great grandma's recipes? They pass on jewelry. Uh some people plant trees that they know they will not enjoy in their lifetime, but they've planted it for the future generation. That's part of their legacy. And so when people want to pass on a legacy, uh, they want to leave something of themselves. They want to be remembered somehow. They want to make a difference in the world, they want to uh maybe pass on their values, maybe they want to um pass on relationships, maybe they want to impart faith and wisdom, maybe they'll write things down, maybe they'll share a journal at the end of their days. Uh, if I remember right, the uh Bible scholar D.A. Carson's dad was a pastor, um, I think in French Canada, but he had a really rough time and he journaled it. And so D.A. Carson's dad had this journal, uh, journaling his difficulties and trying to minister and even difficulties with the denomination, and he journaled all this stuff. And when he died, the author and Bible scholar D.A. Carson found it and published it as a book. And I have no idea if his dad intended or knew or how that worked, but it was very revealing, uh somewhat encouraging to pastors who struggle. But I guess maybe D.A. Carson's dad's unknown legacy was his journal being passed on. And it showed he was a man of faith, and he endured through hard times, and he was faithful, and that was good. But what is your legacy? What are you trying to do with your life? We're in this series called Chasing What Matters. And so this one we're talking about discipleship and passing on your values. But what kind of contribution are you making to society? When your time is up and we gather together to remember and celebrate your life, what will people say about you? What will they remember about you? Whose life will you have changed? How will you have helped people find Jesus? How will you have multiplied your influence? What will you do to leave a legacy? But even better than that, what will you do to multiply your faith? To multiply your faith. So I'm gonna share some things that I hope if I've done a really good job and the pastors and Bible study leaders and everybody before me have done a really good job. You are totally familiar with these passages. Uh, nothing new to you. But first of all, we need to embrace the mission that Jesus gave us. The mission that he gave us. And you know this passage so well. I hope you do anyway. Uh Jesus is giving the disciples uh their job description, their mission, their mandate before he ascends into heaven. This is after he's been resurrected. He says, Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I've commanded you, and surely I am with you always to the very end of the age. So we're familiar with this. We all know that we are supposed to share our faith and make disciples. But many people don't know exactly what that means. They're a little confused as to what that process is. So if I share Jesus with somebody and they come to church, does that mean I've I've shared enough? And I hope in the time that I have I give you some ideas. Actually, if you look on that back side of your outline, there's a list of 10 things that you want to focus on. When it's not a complete list, there's other things. But and I'll give you some resources and tools and also an idea on how you can use right now media, that video service we have. For those people that don't really like to read, there's a lot of the people like that nowadays. But so to go, this is not just you're supposed to go on a missions trip or you're supposed to go somewhere to the Net Lake Indian Reservation to our Baptist Church up there. Uh, but as you are going, so as you are out and about, so as you're going at work, as you're going to the store, as you're taking your kid to baseball, whatever, as you have opportunities and you come across people and the door seems to be open to conversation, it is a good time to see where that person is in the Lord. It is a good time to see if that person has ever come into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ or if they're still somewhere along the way. And what you hope to do is you hope to lead them to Christ and then if they become baby Christ followers to help them to grow in their faith, to train them up to live the Christian life, to be fruitful Christ followers. And even more than that, you want to train a person to be a disciple who is equipped to disciple someone else. So you're trying to make disciples who make disciples. Dawson Trotman from The Navigators had written a great little booklet called Born to Reproduce, and that's what we are to do. We are supposed to reproduce spiritually. But so I am with you, Jesus says, to the very end of the age. So he has been given the authority in heaven and earth, and he wants us to do this. And so if he wants us to do this, and we are in him, then through the power of the Holy Spirit, he's gonna help us get it done. He's gonna help us to be successful at it. But we need to be faithful to show up and to make the attempt. I always believe that when we're out there, when we've shown up, we're making the attempt, that's when the Holy Spirit's power kicks in and helps us. And we need to be ever mindful that this is something we're supposed to be doing and that we should have a plan. We should have a strategy, we should have a tool, we should do something. There are so many different ways, so many different resources to do discipleship, to help train people up. Just find something that works for you and get started. Get started. Because all authority has been given to Jesus, and he has basically given us the responsibility to go out and make disciples. And that is a good thing. That is a good thing. And so we are to share Jesus with people of all nations. We are to share with people all around us. And as we have that opportunity, we should do everything that we can to see people as Jesus sees them, to see past their heritage, their nationality, uh, their family history, their social status, and try to see them as Jesus sees them and know that Jesus can change lives. Jesus can transform people. And what he wants us to do is help people to mature in their faith. And of all nations, we don't have the opportunity, at least I don't, to fly everywhere, but we have opportunity to reach out to people through social networking and other different ways where we can actually communicate easily with people in faraway lands in different places. And we should do that. So baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, we do that. If you've never been baptized as a believer, we would love to help you with that. Matter of fact, we can do it right there in the warm, beautiful tank that's actually covered right now. But we don't even have to go break the ice on the lake. We can we can do it indoors, and you don't have to. I mean, you could, I mean, we'd always go out to the lake. But I'm wearing waders, insulated waders for that one. But yeah. There is a guy, um not sure where he was from exactly, but he felt he had sinned. His sins were so bad he wanted to be baptized in the freezing water of the river, which was kind of different. The pastor did it, but to teach them to obey everything I have commanded. So Jesus has commanded us to love God and to love others. Jesus has given us uh lots of principles for living, and the new believer won't know that if we don't help them to know, if we don't teach them, if we don't help them to the very end of the age. And that is a good thing. It is our personal responsibility to intentionally try to disciple people. So the next part is to start where you are. Who do you have an opportunity to invest into their life? If you have children, you have an opportunity to disciple your children. If you have grandchildren, you have an opportunity. You can come here and help us with uh Rockwell Kids and Sunday school ministries, and you can help with that. Maybe you have a co-worker you're close to, a neighbor, a friend, you should start where you are. There are so many people that want to try this, but they want to do it somewhere where nobody knows them. It's always easier to share your faith on a plane where nobody knows you and you'll never most likely never see them again. And it's always easier to uh do ministry far, far away. It's harder when you're around people that have known you for a long time, or people that are in your social group, or uh are in kind of in charge or yeah, kind of in charge of your future at work. Sometimes that seems scarier. But we were promised in another passage that I'm sure that you know, that you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you'll be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere in Jerusalem, through Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. So Jerusalem is where you know everybody, you know the culture. Uh, you know, it's it's your people group, it's your town, it's where you live. And so Judea would be um kind of a little more cross-cultural, you know, maybe not your neighbors, but people around, you know. So maybe we could say uh Jerusalem is like Evelith, Virginia, Mount Nairn, Bawabik, whatever. Uh Judea, that's the rest of Minnesota, maybe, uh, maybe uh America. Samaria, uh, larger context, maybe a group of people that you don't know, uh, and to the ends of the earth. And so there's different cultural contexts. Um, it's also interesting that if you look at this, it also is kind of an outline for the book of Acts. So Acts chapter 1 through 7, the focus was pretty much on Jerusalem. Acts chapter 8 through 12 was pretty much on Judea and Samaria, and Acts 13 to 28 was kind of about the ends of the earth. But we're supposed to be obedient, and like I said in the beginning, when we're faithful to show up, then it seems like the Holy Spirit kicks in. So I don't know if you know a lot about cars, but you know, sometimes your turbo kicks in as you're going and you need more power. And so many times I've shown up. I didn't feel like it. I had a lot of excuses not to be there, not to try that, not to try to talk to that person. I had a lot of excuses, but I showed up. I'm like, all right, Lord, here goes, please help me. And as I started, then it seemed like the Holy Spirit kicked in and uh inspired me to share the correct verses and answer their questions in a meaningful way, and um know when to listen and when to speak, and so many things. And we have so many missed opportunities because we were too busy, or we were too unconcerned, or we were too confused, or Satan told us we were unworthy, or the person didn't want to hear it. And to me, it seems like when you're trying to share your faith that there's a lot of interruptions and disruptions that take place. Sometimes people ask you questions that don't even make sense. Uh like, well, I I I just have to know where Cain got his wife. It's like, yeah, it was probably his sister, but it was a different time and a different yeah, genetics were were different. But that's not the main issue. Why don't we how about if we get back to that? How about if we talk about that a little later? And I get back to my my little my little Bible tract, and we we read through this together, and then you can ask me questions at the end. And sometimes effectively sharing your faith is literally reading something with another person. It works many times. I've seen people come to Christ as we've read a gospel tract together. But we do this because we love God, and the Hebrews, God's people, had the Shema, and so they repeated this over and over again, and it was very familiar to them, but it was memorized, and I think there's something in it for us that we need to hang on to and we need to remember. And I know you're familiar with this too. Deuteronomy 6.5. You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I'm giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home, when you are on the road, when you are going to bed, and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorpost of your house and on your gates. So if you have a hard time writing them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, I'm pretty sure you can go to Hobby Lobby and come up with some really cool scripture stuff to put on your wall. But let me go back to this committing yourself to sharing things. So as we are going about, we have opportunities to talk to people and to talk to our children. So as we're in the car, as we're on a walk, as we're out and about. So uh my grandson came to visit with us, and uh well, he's he's come to visit with us many times, but I like showing right now media. When he was younger, he liked watching Bible Man on Right Now Media, so the animated one, not the not the people trying to act it out from the old days, but the new animated Bible man. He liked that one. Uh he's getting older now, he's 11, and so when he was here the last time, um at the end of summer, um each night we would watch a different faith-based football movie, like um trying to think of the names of Woodlawn, um facing the giants, and and some other ones. So there's like six of them, I think. But so we watched those and we talked about it a little bit. So that's an opportunity. It wasn't hard to do. So you just control the media in your house and then have conversations about it. But to share your faith in Jesus, to share how faith matters to you, to share how your life was changed to you, maybe even share, uh, if your kids are old enough to handle it, what your life was like before you came to Christ and how you came to Christ and what your life has been like since. But we are to repeat them again and again to your children. Sometimes children forget, sometimes children aren't tuned in, sometimes children need to hear it again and again. But it is a great thing when your kids know your faith story. Uh, it might even become part of your legacy when they come to a point in their life where they may need to make choices and decisions and lead their children, your influence may impact them. So we are to live out this command. We are to not miss out on any opportunities. It's a good thing when we look at opportunities to be obedient, to be empowered, to uh do what we're supposed to do for the things of Christ. So I mentioned go back to missed opportunities. Um I mentioned before that we were changing the podcast thing from being Rockwell Church to being well faith so that I could put some of my old stuff out there too. Because I'm trying to reach people, and the difference with audio podcasting and video is you can easily edit audio. It's so easy to edit audio. I can make myself sound perfect. I mean, I literally now can take a computer program and I can turn my audio into text, and then I can tell it to remove all of my vocal pauses and imperfections. And that's pretty good for the listener. Um it might be bad though if they show up to church to visit and they're like, oh, I thought he was a better speaker than he is. Every now and then I get stuck on words, and uh I try not to do that, but I am what I am. I think Popeye said that. But many people have been listening just just recently, uh in the last, oh, in the last 30 days or so, even less than that. Um, people from Evelith, Virginia, Duluth, St. Paul, Minneapolis, Fergus Falls, Germany, Ireland, Texas, Oregon, New York, and California have listened in. So I reposted something that's been out there for many years. Like I think it's been out there for eight years, but I reposted it as a um what did I call it? There's a replay. I don't remember what I called it. But uh five people this morning so far before I got up here listened to how moms make a difference. So they also listened to When Dads Live a Well Life and Jesus, the other one was Jesus offers hope in the future to those considering suicide. So those are getting listened to. Uh, that's an opportunity that we have with resources to try to make a difference in the world. Now, they don't usually tell me who they are or how it's making a difference. There was one girl I mentioned before from California that sent a note that said that the messages that we were putting online encouraged her to share her faith with her uh peers at her high school. So, but we love God and that motivates us. We try to make disciples of all nations. We do what we can to make a difference and we live the message. We live the message, we live it out. We do everything that we can to live without the message. Oh, here's my note. Okay, football movies, uh, Woodlawn, facing the giants in greater, the Brandon Burlsworth story. That one made me cry. So sad. Oh my goodness. So the guy is like living for Jesus and a walk-on, and uh, you know, God's blessing him, and he finally gets the pro football. Um wait a second, I'm not gonna ruin it for you. Anyway, it's a big faith story. Uh yeah. If I told you how it went, then you might, yeah, you maybe already know. Okay. So Paul says, follow my example as I follow the example of Christ. That is such a convicting verse. Am I living my life in such a way that I'm a worthy example to follow? I hope that I am. There's always so many more things that I could do, and there's things that I think, and there's things that I do that nobody knows, good things that would be worthy following an example of if, you know, I told you everything that they were. Um, maybe you'd be, oh, but it just feels like that lacks humility to do that, and it just seems weird. So, but to follow Paul's example. So Paul was addressing the Corinthian church that had all sorts of individual divisions and improper worship practices and misunderstandings about freedom in Christ. And Paul is saying, you know, I'm a model, you you know me, you can follow my example, you can follow my leadership example, you can follow me humbly following Christ. Paul sacrificed in so many ways, he endured so many difficulties, he endured persecutions and shipwrecks and uh all snake bites and all sorts of different things for the cause of Christ. And he never he never backed down after Jesus got a hold of him and set him on the right path. He was all out for Jesus, and that is worth following. He mentored people. Discipled people, he made a difference, and we are to do that. We are to be an example worth following. Is there anybody that you could think of that you could invest in their life? Is there anybody that might benefit from your example? Is there anybody that might be waiting to hear from you about how they can have faith in Christ? Or maybe they are Christ followers, but they just they're not mature in their faith, and they just need someone to come alongside and to help them to grow, to help them to know how to follow Jesus. Uh what's weird is that if a baby is born, they'll everybody just keeps aging and growing and progressing in a physical life, but spiritually uh you could receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior 20 years ago and still be an immature baby Christian if you haven't grown in your faith, if you haven't been taught the things of God, if you don't know what you're to do. And we're to invest in the faithful. We're to invest in the faithful. In 2 Timothy 2 2, Paul says, I have you've heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others. So Paul is coming to the end of his ministry and he's telling Timothy, you want to focus your efforts on teaching these things to reliable people who will be able to teach others. So many years ago, I used to be able to go out to lunch or spend time with Dr. Peter West from the First Baptist Church of Minneapolis. And so when I knew he was older and lost his preaching voice, he had a lot of great things to say. Um he had the system that he would disciple a few men, but they had to be 100% committed to his plan and program. And at the time I was taking courses from two different Bible colleges, and I didn't have time to follow his plan. So he didn't pick me to be part of his training. Um, it would have been great to be mentored by him. So he had a lot of great stories too. He used to share stories about um he knew Martin Luther King Jr. and um so when he was the pastor in Minneapolis there, and so he shared stories about that. So, but anyway, he had a plan, and his plan, his priority was to invest in people who were going to be able to reproduce his leadership. He wanted at the end of his days, he wanted to make sure his investment of time and resources was going to be well spent because he realized he only had so many days left, and he really wanted to invest in people that mattered. So he invested in me to a good point, um, but not through his whole system. But so many things that he told me during lunch were things that were like prophetic, like he said, don't do this and do this and be aware of that. And as I listened and as I watched, all these things kind of unfolded. So it's like he spoke into my life. He never said, Thus saith the Lord. He was just offering wisdom. But it was so helpful as a guide as I traveled through life to remember some of the things that he said. Could you be like that? Could you be a person like that where people would remember you as a guide? Uh, spoke into their life and help them to grow spiritually and help them to be fruitful, to help them as they were going. So Paul did everything he could to invest into some men like Timothy, his son in the faith. Paul invested into Timothy, and Timothy invested into reliable people, and those reliable people invested into others, and that is such a good thing. Such a good thing to know that your life is making a difference because you're living for Jesus and you're investing in people. That is the only investment that really matters. Uh, financial investments are great, you know. God can do a lot through your uh financial victories. Uh, investing in health in your body is great because the longer that you live and the healthier you are, the more effective you can be for the kingdom of God. But disciples who make disciples are the ones who make, who change the world for all eternity. And that leads to empower multiplication. Empower multiplication. Jesus says, You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that whatever you ask in my name, the Father will give you. Jesus chose you. Jesus chose you to be part of his family. Jesus chose you to serve him. Jesus chose you to be a disciple maker. If Jesus chose you, he's gonna help you to get it done. The more you try to do something, the more you learn about it, the more experience you get, and the better you get at it. And so the more that you invest in someone's life, the more that you share your faith, the more that you teach what you know of the Bible in the Christian life, the better you get at it. So I think we showed this in August, but I'm gonna show it anyway. It's like two minutes on what a disciple is, and then we'll look at the back of your notes there.

The Bible is God's word, the voice of the Creator, a lamp to our feet, a light to our path, a guide in the darkness of life. The Bible is God's word, showing us Jesus, the word made flesh. He came, died, rose, and will one day return to make all things new. The Bible is God's word, our daily reminder of who we are in Christ. New people with new hearts, ambassadors for his kingdom. The Bible is God's word, the voice we listen for, the truth we cling to, the bread we crave, the wisdom we live by. It is worth our discipline, our attention, our focus, our obedience, our devotion. The Bible. Sixty-six books. One hero, one message. Through Jesus, God is redeeming a sinful people to himself. Know him, love him, hear him. God has spoken.

How they know for sure that they're saved, that their salvation rests on Jesus, that um they're not only able to understand it and comprehend it, but they're able to then share it with others. The best people to reach lost people for Christ are new people that have lots of lost friends. Sometimes, you know, we live in among church people, and pretty soon all of our friends are Christians. And anyway, to give them a foundation to how to pray, model and teach how to pray using examples like the Lord's Prayer, um, teaching them formulas for prayer, like uh Acts, ACTS, adoration, I adore you, Lord, um, confession, confessing any known sins, thanksgiving, thanking the Lord for what he's doing, what he's done, what he's gonna do, and then supplication, praying for others, praying for yourself. Um, praying is huge and important. How to study the Bible, to equip them with tools to read, interpret, and apply scripture. And there's study Bibles and um all sorts of tools that we have. Even the How to Find God New Testament is a is a tool. And you know, for just a little more than five dollars per copy, we're able to give a New Testament that has all sorts of notes in the front about how to be saved and how to live the Christian life. And you could go through that with the person, you could uh make a reading plan and agree to read things and then have a discussion or read it together, so many different things. To live, number four, live by the power of the Holy Spirit, helping them to understand the Spirit's role and guidance and growth is important. Sometimes it can be confusing for some people, but when we look at what scripture says and we realize the Holy Spirit empowers us and guides us and teaches us and helps us. Number five, obedience to Christ, teaching them how to follow Jesus' commands and grow in holiness is important. And then this is kind of an overlap of number one, but number six, uh, how to effectively share their faith, uh, training them to share their testimony and the gospel with confidence is important. Number seven, you can teach them to serve others, teaching the importance of using their spiritual gifts in the local church at christian.com. If you search for spiritual gifts, I think I have a list of a bunch of different spiritual gift tests that you can take. And if you take a spiritual gifts test and you're a new believer, uh sometimes it doesn't work that great. But as you get more experience serving, you might find that you have a spiritual gift of like teaching or serving or uh administration administrative gifts or different things, but to teach them about that. So teach them how to endure trials and uh to say no to temptation and to say yes to Christ, to like it says in Romans 6, to be dead to sin, to count yourself dead to sin and alive to Christ. Encourage them to trust God in difficult times and rely on his promises. Uh stewardship, helping them to understand the biblical principles of managing time, talents, and treasure. And actually, that's the message for next week. So we'll talk about that next week. And number 10, making disciples. You're teaching the person, your discipling, how to disciple someone because your goal is to be a disciple who makes disciples, uh, emphasizing multiplication. And again, there's just so many resources on the pastor's bookshelf in there. Uh, I guess these must have been a resource during the Billy Graham Crusade, but there's all these resource kits back there that are bound together. I think there's like three booklets and a how-to manual. But if you're interested, you should take them. Uh, you might have an opportunity to use them to disciple someone. Um, I have these simple books of Growing in Christ from the Navigators that have scripture reference stuff and um like 13 sessions, pretty simple. I could show you how to use that. Uh, then the navigators make a bunch of different stuff. Uh the man a warrior series or the growing strong in God's family series are good for discipleship. So many different things. And then we have our right now media service, rockwell.church forward slash right now. Um, that's actually supposed to be not a dot of forward slash rockwell.church forward slash right now. And you can go sign up and get your right now media account. But they have like 2,000 kids' videos and 25,000 other videos. Some of them are in different languages, but most of them are in English. But they help us to make disciples. It is a resource that helps us to make disciples. And I could talk about this for a long time. Maybe someday when it's nice and warmer out, we should have like a one-day discipling others seminar or something like that. But I'm gonna uh pray and then uh I'm gonna show you the right now media video, and then the worship team is gonna come up and sing. So then we can go warm our cars and come back and fellowship and have a good time together. So, Lord Jesus, I thank you that you have given us a mandate to make disciples. I thank you that you have given us the Holy Spirit to empower us to help make it happen. I pray you've given you that you've given us a ton of resources so that we can choose something to invest into the life of lives of others. I know it's a spiritual battle, it can be a scary thing, but it's a way for us to leave a legacy, it's a way for us to make an eternal difference, it's a way to chase what really matters. So we thank you for the opportunity. We just pray for fruit. We pray you'd give us fruitful lives as we seek and serve you. Lord, we just thank you for all the resources and all the opportunities. Over the past 40 years of serving more than 30,000 churches, we've seen a lot of changes, but one thing's remaining constant. The mission of the church is to make disciples. We all need to grow as followers of Jesus, and in RightNow Media, we want to be a part of helping Christians become more like Christ. That's why we created a disciple-making journey called the Essentials of Faith. This is a big project for us, and it's going to include 12 Bible studies that cover the basics of Christianity, including topics like what it means to be a Christian, why are the Bible manners, why we should go to church, and much more. And we've partnered with incredible teachers, including Francis Chan, J.D. Green, Lisa Harper, Derwin Gurney, and many, many more, to bring you the best content possible. It's easy for all of us to get pulled away from focusing on our core beliefs, and so our hope is that these studies help you disciple other people at any stage of your walk with Jesus. This discipleship journey is perfect for new Christians as women's people who've been around the church for a long time but may need to be reintroduced to the foundations of the faith. The study guides included in Essentials of Faith will help you talk through these sessions and apply what you've learned as a group so that everyone knows women just had knowledge to belief and ultimately to apply them in their daily lives. We believe these resources will be valuable for both students and adults, so we're writing separate study guides that are relevant to each audience. We're going to premier the first two Essentials of Faith studies in August of 2024, and then roughly every six months, we're going to release two more studies until all twelve are available. For many churches and groups, these studies can serve as a discipleship pathway that will take Christians deeper into their faith. And just like all the other Bible studies in RightNum Media, these new Essentials of Faith studies will be included as part of your subscription.
