Living Boldly Because Jesus Gives Us Victory

Easter is more than a memory from the past. In Luke 24, the empty tomb shows that Jesus is alive, His promises are true, and His resurrection changes how believers live now. Pastor Chris Teien shows how the victory of Jesus gives courage to obey, hope to endure, and confidence to share the gospel.

On Friday, there was darkness, despair, and death. Sin had spoken. The grave had won. Hope was lost. But on the third day, everything changed. The sun rose. The earth shook. The grave lost its grip. Jesus is alive. This is more than history. This is victory. This is love that conquered death. This is life that conquered death. This is grace for the guilty. Mercy for the broken and strength for the weak. The grace was not the end. It was just the beginning. Today we celebrate not an ancient memory, but a risen savior. Not a distant hope, but a present king. Jesus is alive. And because he lives, everything changes.

And some of us have been Christians for 20 years or 30 years or 40 years, and we're like, well, hopefully I'll be more inspired. Hopefully I'll recommit. But when we have an opportunity to gather to celebrate, I mean we celebrate birthdays, we celebrate Christmas, we celebrate anniversaries, and we gather together to celebrate this most significant day in human history, not world history, but human history, the day that God came down, showed us how to live, died for our sins, rose again, and promised us eternity, promised us so much. That's what we're going to talk about today, and I'm excited about it. I hope you are too. Living boldly, Jesus gives us victory. Easter is a turning point in history when people went from just fulfilling the law, trying to be right with God, offering sacrifices for their sins, to switching it around to living for Jesus, empowered by the Spirit, knowing Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice for sin. So we don't have to sacrifice animals for our sins. It's good to confess our sins, and we do make sacrifices to honor the Lord. People sacrifice their careers, sacrifice their lives to do things more significant for Jesus. And those are all good. But as we look at this passage today, I just want you to try to think about what it was like. We're going to look at Luke 24. So if you have a Bible or a phone Bible, Luke 24, what was it like for the disciples and the followers of Jesus to see their Savior crucified on the cross with all the miracles and all the teaching and all the things you'd think they would think he was invincible? But it appears that the disciples' minds were veiled from exactly what was going to go on until it happened. Maybe that's to make sure that the disciples didn't give away Jesus' secret to make sure he wasn't crucified before it was time. And so there's a lot of aha moments that come after Jesus is resurrected, and then they start to remember the things that Jesus said. And we're going to remember some of those things that Jesus said. But just imagine you have invested yourself in a company, or you invested yourself in some great thing, and then all of a sudden it you get fired, or the company folds, or the thing that you handcrafted burns up, or the car that you crafted is stolen or crashed up, or all those things. And the dream just dies, and where do you go from there? But the dream did not die. The purpose of Jesus living and training up his disciples was definitely going to be in action, but there was a pause. There was a short period of sadness, of wondering, of not knowing what to do next. And sometimes that happens in our life too. Sometimes the dream dies, our spouse dies, something bad happens, and we're just sitting there. We have no idea what to do next. We don't know, and we just wait. And we when we wait faithfully, when we wait on the Lord, often He'll show us what to do next. And in this message, I'm going to also encourage you to just do what you know you should be doing, even when things are difficult, even when things seem like they've all fallen apart. So I hope that in some way the Holy Spirit will use this to speak to you in your area of need, or the guests that you brought in your area of need, or if you're watching or listening online in your area of need, so that you will be transformed. Transformed to the point that you're willing to sacrifice, you're willing to lay down your life for what you believe, you're willing to stand for this truth. And when you come to your dying day with great confidence, you say, I know whom I believed, and I can't wait to be face to face with my Savior. That kind of confidence. To number one, live boldly by doing what you know you need to do. To be proactive, not reactive. So let's look at this first verse. On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. So this passage here shows that Jesus' main disciples are in hiding. They're afraid that they're going to be crucified too, or the Roman soldiers are going to come after them. But the women, it was dangerous in the morning, but they had known this was coming. They got, they purchased the spices, they got everything together, they had a plan to do the right thing. And so they went early in the morning and they're heading off to Jesus' tomb to prepare his body the way you would for burial. And they are saddened, they are disappointed. The dream has died, the Savior has died, it's so unexpected, they're just crushed. But yet they're doing what they know they needed to do. Now it's interesting that they're also just heading off and they don't even know how it's going to turn out. So the tomb has a stone that needs to be rolled away. And sometimes in the stuff we have at Christmas and Easter, it makes it sound like nobody could roll the stone away, which wouldn't make any sense. Obviously, somebody could, but the one who was crucified, Jesus who was crucified on the inside, wouldn't have been able to roll away the stone. And the women were going to need some help. If you look at a harmony of the gospels, it even mentions they're like, we don't even know who's going to roll away the stone. So hopefully the Romans or somebody would. So they're just going to show up and they're going to ask permission to go in there and treat Jesus' body because they were doing what they knew they needed to do. As a group, they're like, okay, this has happened, and so what's the right thing to do? How can we honor our Savior, our Lord, our friend? How can we honor Jesus? So they did that. They prepared the burial spices as an act of love very early in the morning. And they didn't care if there was going to be trouble from the Roman soldiers. They just wanted to do the right thing. They did it out of grief. They did it out of love. They did it because it was the right thing to do. When you find out that you've been laid off from your job, when you find out that someone that you love has died, when you find out that something that you care for so much is gone, when things don't go your way, or when a democratic, when a democracy votes in a way that you don't want, or all of these bad things in life happen, sometimes you're just stunned. What do you do? And I want to encourage you to do what you know you need to do. In the Christian life, we all have things that we should do. And in the How to Find God New Testament that we give away. So if you would like one on the table on the web next to the door, there's a whole stack of these. I realize that some people have a desire to give. So there's people that give to support the church, they give faithfully to support the church, and but they also want to give towards other things. If there's a project or a need or a kid needs to go to camp or something, they have extra funds they'd like to do significant things with. So if you would be interested in buying a case of Bibles, they're about $130 for a case of 40. And so they are freely available, and we share them with everybody, and we hope that you will take some. But in the front, it has a list of first steps of what you're supposed to do. And so I'm not going to read all of the first steps out of here, but I do have some of my own here. Number one, spend time in God's Word. Psalm 119, 105. Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Sometimes, even if you just read a paragraph and dwell on it, or a page, or use a Bible reading plan and spend seven minutes or 15 minutes. Sometimes when you make a commitment to spend seven minutes in God's Word reading God's Word, and another three minutes praying and you make a 10-minute commitment, you show up to that and you get that done every day. But often what happens is you're like, I really like what I'm reading. I like what's happening here, and then you spend more time because you want to. If you say, I'm going to spend an hour a day in God's Word, then sometimes you're like, oh, I'm not ready for that hour yet. Still not ready for that hour. It's a lot easier to get the little in. But nonetheless, spend time in God's Word. Talk to God in prayer honestly and regularly. 1 Thessalonians 5.17 says, pray continually. Pray without ceasing. You can pray while you're driving. You can pray while you're walking. You can pray while you're cleaning. You can pray for yourself. You can pray for others. You can praise, but prayer is your lifeline to God. And the Heavenly Father cares so much about you. We pray in Jesus' name. The Holy Spirit even helps us to pray. But we pray. And as we do, we often see results. Many times we don't get what we wanted or needed because we didn't ask for it. What is it that you have not asked for that Jesus might be willing to answer if you would pray and be faithful? Being active in a local church community, it's awesome when Christmas and Easter comes and there's more people at church. But Hebrews 10 24 says, let us not give up meeting together. And we were created to worship together, to be part of a local church family together, to be in ministry together, to encourage each other and build each other up. And obey God in the little things. When you're reading in God's word, when the Holy Spirit convicts you, do what's right, do that thing, make that change, get rid of that thing. James 1 22 says, Don't merely listen to the word, do what it says. Maybe we need to forgive someone, maybe we need to find a place to serve, maybe we need to get more vocal about our faith. And that's the next one. Sharing our faith. Sharing our faith is so important that we're to go and make disciples. You don't need to stand up here, you don't need to be on YouTube, you don't need a microphone. Just working behind the scenes, sharing your faith with other people, helping them to know that you have a real, relevant relationship with Jesus. That is so important. People want to see how that works. And when they see that it works in you and maybe some others, they'll be more likely to come to Jesus. Practicing generosity, I already mentioned that, but 2 Corinthians 9 7 says God loves a cheerful giver, and so we give of our time and our treasures and our talents, and people serve in different ways. So I bet you probably don't even know who mows the lawn here all summer long. He does a great job. I won't call him out, but you know, there's just people that work behind the scenes to keep this place clean, to keep it repaired, to serve and teach Bible studies, women's Bible study on Tuesday, men's Bible study on Thursdays. Confess, next thing to do, confess and repent of any sin that God brings to mind. If we confess our sins, he's faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us. And so when we do that, we can walk in the Lord. And my last one is to live with gratitude. There's more. There's probably more in the How to Find God New Testament, but to live in gratitude, to be thankful for what you have, to be thankful for the moments that you have to enjoy, to be thankful for the days where there's good weather, to be thankful for the good times. And sometimes you're even thankful for the difficult times because it helps you to remember the good times. Kind of like storms, kind of like storms. I don't think anybody gets really excited about lightning and thunder. Though I did, I was the other day. I'm like, is that lightning? Is that thunder? Oh, it must be a sign of spring. But okay, so the women did what they knew that they needed to do, and it was important. So who were these women? Who were these women? Luke 24.10. I'm gonna skip ahead to Luke 24.10 for a minute. Here Luke calls out it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them. So Mary Magdalene was the one that Jesus delivered seven demons from, and so she was there. And Joanna was a woman of influence, married to Herod's household manager, and she boldly used her position to support Jesus' ministry. And then Mary, the mother of James, James the Lesser, not James, son of Zebedee, not the James that was one of Jesus' closest friends of the Peter, James, and John crew. But anyway, she was there, and then there are other women there. And that is a pretty exciting thing to look at, but it causes a it causes trouble, it causes a problem, it causes a Bible reading problem. If you've studied your Bible and if you've compared the Gospels before, or if you're sharing your faith with someone and they're comparing the Gospels, they're gonna throw up red flags and they're gonna be like, wait, time out. This this is inaccurate. This doesn't make sense. There's no way that you could have the account from John and the account from Luke and have them make sense. Because it shows that it appears that Mary Magdalene showed up first and the tomb is empty, and she's crying and it's sad, and the blukes wait, the women all showed up, and and then in let's see, where's it? Matthew, yeah, Matthew 28, 7, the angel is gonna say, and go quickly and tell his disciples that Jesus is risen from the dead, and behold, he's going before you into Galilee, and there you will see him. Behold, I have told you. And so between all the different Mary's and James's, that gets confusing. And between the gospel accounts, it gets confusing. And sometimes, if you're really paying attention to your Bible, it's also extremely entertaining. Extremely entertaining because John never refers to himself as, hey, it was me. He says, Oh, the other disciple, or once he's like, the disciple whom Jesus loved. I just love this here in John, in the harmony of the gospels here, in John 20, verse 4, as they hear that they're running to go to the tomb. John writes about he and Peter, and the two were running together, and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first, in which he points out, John points out that Peter and I were sprinting in a race, and I won, by the way. Not going to use my name because I'm so humble, but so that that's part of fun, it's funny. But okay, so you have these different accounts of the gospels, but actually they're not contradictory, they're complementary, because the gospel writers are trying to pull out through the power of the Holy Spirit the points that they think are important. So it doesn't need to be a timeline chronological account that matches all four gospels. And so the gospel writers are pulling out what they think is important, and John thought it was important theologically to point out the interaction that Mary, her individual experience, had with Jesus at that time, where Luke summarizes them all together and basically says, the women went to the tomb, and then the angel showed up. So it doesn't have to be a chronological account, super timeline. And when you put that together, it's kind of like putting a puzzle together. Then you're like, okay, so each author has given his audience the information that they needed. And sometimes I find these Bible difficulties, which is actually the name of a helpful handbook called Bible Difficulties, where you look at the passage and you try to piece it together and what it means. And I think it's a test of your faith. I think it's a test to show are you truly going to research it and dig deeper to find out what it means, or are you just going to overlook it? Or are you just looking for an excuse to not read the Bible and say, well, you know, it's not accurate. Well, it's not accurate the way that you're looking at it in your modern eyes, thinking it needs to be chronological. Instead, it is accurate because it's giving different accounts of different things. And that is good. So anyway, these women were heading out to see Jesus and they were doing the right thing. So as a group, they're like, I just want to honor Jesus. I just want to want him to know we loved him. Galatians 6 9 says, Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we'll reap a harvest if we don't give up. And maybe they didn't feel like it, but they did it anyway. Maybe they would rather stick around and grieve, but sometimes grief and action causes you to do the right thing. Causes you to do the right thing. Chip Ingram in true spirituality says, God always has and always will look for men and women who say to him, I trust you so much. I'm all in. I want your way, not mine. I'm willing to live by faith. And when you show up and do the right thing for the right reasons, God can honor that. Hebrews 11 6 says, Without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Number two, live boldly with an eternal perspective. To live boldly with an eternal perspective. This life is not all you get. These days is not all you will experience, especially in Christ. We're all going to live for eternity, but we by believing in Jesus Christ are guaranteed we will believe, be living in eternity with Jesus in his presence, and that will be a good thing. Luke 24, 2 and 3. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb. But when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. They did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. And again, they did not expect to see the stone being rolled away, which would cause them to fret and say, Where did he go? What happened? And they, according to the harmony of the gospels, it doesn't appear that the angels showed up immediately, like in that second, but in that time that they did. So sometimes when obstacles seem immovable in our lives, when we don't know how it's going to work out, when we when God has called us to do something and we don't even know if it's going to work, it seems crazy. But yet we step forward and we trust God and say, okay, we'll do it. Though the Holy Spirit often gives you like a burning in your heart, a comfort, a motivation. Sometimes people will come around you in your life and encourage you and say, Hey, I just want to encourage you too. And then they'll like state the thing that's been on your mind, and maybe you didn't even talk to them about that. Pretty cool. And as you know, one thing that my wife and I did that was pretty crazy. We didn't know how it was going to work out, and it actually did, is we left the good, fine family at Chisholm Baptist to leave and plant a church in a town where we had no contacts, in a town where we did not know anyone, in a place where we had no building, we had nothing except a guaranteed paycheck for one for 12 months. For 12 months, we were guaranteed a paycheck, and we just dropped into town and we prayed and went on a spiritual scavenger hunt to find people for the church and started a Bible study. And God just kept leading us to people and opportunities, and we were able to start a church, and it's still there today. We were just faithful. We showed up, and then God showed up, and that was a good thing. So I don't know what you're going through or the struggle in it all, but I would really encourage you to live boldly with an eternal perspective and know that the thing that you choose to do, the sacrifice that you choose to make, if it's for the Lord, He can make it work if it's His will, He can bless you, He can help you, He can encourage you, and you can look back and you can say, Wow, that was amazing. That was amazing that God worked through me in that way. So exciting. Let's look at verse 4. So while they were wondering about this, the women, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them, and they sure knew that they were angels. In their fright, the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, Why do you look for the living among the dead? He's not here. He has risen. Remember how he told you while he was still with you in Galilee. So Jesus mentioned this repeatedly before to his disciples and to the people he was teaching. He said in Luke 9 22, the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed, and on the third day be raised to life. Jesus told them in advance. Luke 9 44, Jesus says, Listen carefully to what I'm about to tell you. The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it. Like I said, their minds were veiled. And they were afraid to ask him. And finally, Luke 18 31. Jesus took the twelve aside and told them, We are going up to Jerusalem. And everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. He will be handed over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult and spin on him, they will flog and kill him. And on the third day he will rise again. Jesus is like, I told you. And they're like, we didn't get it. So it's not fair. It's not like they were dense. Like I said, I think there is just a temporary veiling of the information to make sure that they didn't tell everybody before it happened. Luke 11, 25, Jesus says, I'm the resurrection and the life. Whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this? Adrian Rogers says the resurrection is not merely important to the historic Christian faith. Without it, there would be no Christianity. Number three, live boldly by trusting his promises. Live boldly by trusting his promises. Like that song, Standing on the Promises of God. We need to trust in God's promises. And there's been times where I have just literally claimed promises in Scripture to get me through the hard time, the difficult time, the time when I needed encouragement. Sometimes I would just open the Bible and it would fall open to a passage that I needed to see with great encouragement. Other times it's not. So don't just open your Bible and okay, God, what is it you want me to do? And then point at Scripture, because I think I mentioned that once before, and I'm not sure. I think I ended up in Joshua or something like that, where it says, I'm like, God, what should I do? Strapped their swords to their side and they ran through the camp and slew everyone. And I'm like, yeah, that's not it. But trusting in the promises. So Luke 24, 7, the Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified, and on the third day be raised again. And then they remembered his words. So the angel's like, remember when he said that? And they're like, Yeah, okay, I remember that. The women, and then they, when they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the eleven and to all of the others. So they remembered and then they told what they knew. They told what they knew, which is so important. You need to tell what you know. R.A. Tori says gospel preachers nowadays preach the gospel of the crucifixion. The apostles preach the gospel of the resurrection as well. The crucifixion loses its meaning without the resurrection. With the resurrection, it is the atoning death of the Son of God. And if you want to hear more about that, you can watch the Good Friday service, the Isaiah 53 message that is online. Number four, last point, live boldly by believing and sharing the true gospel message. You get that? I gave you all the answers, actually. That was the Easter gift to you. You don't even have to fill in the blank. Okay, Luke 24, 10. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary, the mother of James, and the others. I already read this earlier, with the others who were with them, who told this to the apostles, but they did not believe the women because their words seemed like nonsense. You greeting ladies are crazy. Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb, bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away wondering to himself what had happened. So they're trying to piece it together. Sometimes when you tell the message the first time, it takes people by shock, or people aren't ready to understand it, or they needed time to process it. So maybe you share the gospel message with someone and you give them an opportunity to let it sit, to let it sink in, and to marinate in it a bit, in it for a bit. And that can be a good thing. Romans 1 16 says, I'm not ashamed of the gospel because it's the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes. And that should be our motivation is we could literally rescue these people from eternal death. Romans 10, 9 and 10 says, if you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. And those are great words to encourage us and to encourage others. In the gospel message, I just want to read from 1 Corinthians chapter 15, real quick. I read this actually last year during the Easter message, too. I think it's important because people are like, What is the gospel message? I don't get it. Is it just ask Jesus into your heart? And no, it's so much more than that. So out of the How to Find God New Testament, let me just read this for a minute. Then I'm gonna pray, and then I'm gonna show a video clip, and then the worship team is gonna come up here and sing. So we're almost done. The Apostle Paul is trying to clarify to the Corinthian believers that you've already believed this. This is the important thing that you're standing on. Let me remind you now, dear brothers and sisters, of the good news I preached to you or the gospel I preached to you before. You welcomed it then and you still stand firm in it. It is the good, this good news that saves you if you continue to believe the message I told you, unless, of course, you believe something that was never true in the first place. I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me, that Christ died for our sins, just as the scripture said. He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the scripture said. He was seen by Peter and then by the twelve. After that, he was seen by more than five hundred of his followers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he was seen by James, his half-brother, who did not believe in him, and later by all the apostles, and last of all, as though I had been born at the wrong time, I also saw him when Jesus met Paul on the road to Damascus. They all saw Jesus as proof of the resurrection. So I'm going to skip to verse 17 now, and Paul talks about why this matters. So you got the right message, and this is why that matters. Verse 17 If Christ has not been raised, then your faith is useless, and you are still guilty of your sins. In that case, all who have died believing in Christ are lost. And if our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are more to be pitied than anyone in the world. But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead. He is the first of a great harvest of all who have died. So you see, just as death came into the world through a man, now the resurrection from the dead has begun through another man. So we're talking about Adam. Oh, here we go. Just as everyone dies, because we all belong to Adam, and everyone who belongs to Christ will be given new life. Given new life. Do you have new life? Have you experienced that new life? Maybe you brought a guest here and they do not know what this new life is. And we've proclaimed the gospel message that Jesus died, that he was buried, that he rose again, that he ascended into heaven. By believing in Jesus, you can have new life. And a great way to ask Jesus to come into your life is by prayer. Prayer is talking to God and praying something like, Lord Jesus, thank you so much for dying on the cross for my sins. I believe that you were buried and that you rose again, and that by placing my faith in you and admitting my sin, that you will forgive me and to come into my life and save me and make me the person you created me to be so I can live in that new life. It's a new life of grace, and we're actually going to talk about that next week in a new series from the little book of Philemon, Amazing Grace in Action. So I invite you to come to that. But I'm going to show this video. I'm not coming back up again, so let me just pray real quick again. Jesus, I thank you for everybody that came here today to celebrate this Easter. I pray that you would bless them. I pray they would have great conversations that glorify you as they continue this day and this week. Early on the dawn of Easter morning, the disciples came to the tomb of Jesus. And they realized that Jesus wasn't there. And in that moment, everything changed. Because if Jesus is alive, that means everything he ever said was true. It means he is who he said he is. It means he's the one true king. And the same is true for you. Whoever you are and wherever you came from, everything is different now. If Jesus is alive. Sin is destroyed. Hell has lost its power and death is conquered. If Jesus is alive, you have brothers and sisters in the house of God, in a place to belong, in the family of Christ. If Jesus is alive, that means there's grace for your guilt, mercy for your misery, and strength in your weakness. If Jesus is alive, there is hope for your darkest days and forgiveness for your worst mistakes. Because after the rubble of Saturday comes the beauty of Sunday. So is healing, so is heaven, so is redemption, and so is hope. If Jesus is alive, so are second chances, so are reconciled relationships, and so are new beginnings. If Jesus is alive, we should tell the whole world about it. And that's exactly what we will do. Because Jesus is alive.
