Key Points:

  1. Perceive the Voice of God through Creation – Psalm 19:1–6
God’s glory is written across the sky. His creation speaks continually—even without words—to reveal His power, creativity, and presence (Romans 1:20; Isaiah 40:26; Job 38–41).
  2. Prepare Your Life to Be Transformed by God’s Word – Psalm 19:7–11
Scripture is God’s clear and trustworthy voice. It revives the soul, gives wisdom, and brings joy. It’s more precious than gold and sweeter than honey (2 Timothy 3:16; Proverbs 1:7).
  3. Practice Discernment with the Spirit’s Guidance – Psalm 19:12–14
Not every inner voice is from God. We need spiritual filters and scriptural truth to recognize what is really from Him. Discernment grows through humility, maturity, and time in the Word (Jeremiah 17:9; Romans 8:14; 1 Timothy 4:2).
  4. Live Responsively to God’s Revelation
Don’t just listen—respond. God is calling us to live in worship, truth, and obedience. His voice should move us to action.

Personal Stories from Pastor Chris:
Chris shares about a moment when a closed door in ministry became a new path forward. He also reflects on the beauty of creation during a youth camp sunrise and how it made God’s voice feel undeniable.

Psalm 19, discovering God's voice. I don't know what your experiences have been before as far as you know hearing God's voice or if someone has told you that God told me to tell you, kind of thing. And sometimes that can get kind of mysterious, kind of cryptic. Sometimes people, I don't know if it's pride or what causes them to do this, but they will tell you that they speak for the Lord. And you should always check that according to Scripture. Matter of fact, you should check everything according to Scripture. You should check my sermons according to Scripture. You should be like the Bereans. You should be, your faith should be based on the Word of God, not some preacher or television or video or not Christian music or anything like that. It should be focused on chapter and verse. It would be good if you knew how to rightly divide those 66 books between those pages, and that when it came time to trying to discern God's will, that the Holy Spirit could bring back the verses that you're familiar with, the ones that you've learned, the ones that you've studied, and that would be a good thing. But Psalm 19, written by David, is a very wonderful psalm. So it talks about the amazing creation and how God speaks through his creation. I mean, in the summertime, well, as time has gone on, it's gotten a little different, I guess. But when I was a kid, you could stare up at the sky, and all you'd really see was stars. Maybe you'd see a shooting star. So now it's become more cluttered in the sky, and now there's a bunch of satellites up there, and every now and then you see like a train of satellites go by. It's really weird, but it's like, yeah, God didn't create that, but yeah. And so you see creation mountains, lake sunrises and sunsets on the lake, all different things can bring us and bring people that don't even know Jesus to wonder and be in awe of the creator who made it all possible. And that's how the Psalm starts out, and that is pretty exciting to think about. But I wanted to focus on discovering or hearing God's voice because we all need to hear God's voice at different times. So many times it would be great if God would just like send us a text and tell us what we're supposed to do, how we're what decision we're supposed to make, where are we supposed to live? Should we take that job or shouldn't we? What are we supposed to do with this relationship? How should I direct my kids? How can I be confident that God's going to provide my need? Is there something that I should stop doing, something I should start doing? It'd be really great if God would just audibly speak. That would be cool. But God speaks through his word, God speaks through his spirit. And I just wanted to make a few disclaimers here that just because it's on your heart, just because your heart feels a certain thing doesn't mean it's God's will. Just because it feels like God's voice is coming through your heart, that might not be true, because Jeremiah 17, 9 says, the heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure, who can trust it? So our emotions, our desires, and feelings can lead us astray when they're not grounded on God's truth. And some say you can trust your conscience, but no, you can't always trust your conscience because it can be, according to 1 Timothy 4.2, it can be seared with like a hot iron, it can be scarred, it can be shaped by the culture that we live in, by the things that maybe you learned in school or college or from society. And what your conscience says might be in direct opposition to what God's word really says. And we need to come to the point where the thing we really want to know is we want to know what is God's will in this situation, what is God's will in this perspective, what is God's will in this issue, and how am I supposed to live my life? So, and then with inner promptings, sometimes inner promptings can help you to move into God's will, and sometimes inner promptings can just help you be impulsive and get into trouble. But Romans 8.14 says, For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. So we we are to be led by the Spirit of God, and I do know that the Holy Spirit prompts and the Holy Spirit can guide, and the Holy Spirit can use people in our lives. And those people in our lives don't say, God told me to tell you, because usually the way it works is somebody comes along and says, Hey, I've been praying for you. And so I don't know if this is of the Lord or not, but I feel like maybe you should consider doing this or trying this or whatever. And so many times when that happens, it's a confirmation to what the spirit was already saying to you. And so that person just affirmed what you were already thinking. And what's happened in my life a lot of times is when God was speaking to my heart about making a change or doing something different or something, that when I talked to my wife about it, that she was feeling the same thing. So the spirit was working on both of us at the same time, and we had a discussion and we were in agreement, and that was a really good thing. So Galatians 5 16 says, walk by the Spirit. So in Acts chapter 16, verse 6, the Holy Spirit stopped Paul and his team from going to Asia and kind of redirected them to go to Macedonia. It's like the door was closed, the door was closed and they couldn't move forward because the door was closed, and then another door opened. And so it was about this time in 2021 that the door closed for me in my last church. I didn't really do anything wrong, it's just that district, the denomination leader said, You've been here for 20 years. Why don't you try something else? Why don't we relieve you of this burden and go try something new? And so that was kind of a surprise, but that door was closed. And then as we looked and prayed for opportunity, we found that this door was open. And so many things about coming here were like, I mean, our house and my daughter and her family's house sold on the exact same day, and everything moved us up here. And it was amazing how God worked. But test the spirits, test the spirit. When you wonder if it's from God, check into scripture. Millard Erickson, the theologian, says the Holy Spirit guides, but this guidance does not bypass the mind or contradict the word of God. Subjective experiences must always be evaluated by the objective standard of Scripture. And this is what we've gotten in Psalm 19 here. So we've got Psalm 19, David talks about God's world, his creation, his word, scripture, and then personal conviction and transformation through the Holy Spirit. And that is pretty exciting. So let's watch this video here for a minute about God's revelation and creation.

There are signs and symbols of God and life all around us. The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of his hands, yes, and every stepping is done. It's a reminder of the beauty and majesty and artistry of God. Every rise every morning, everyone, every post, a reminder of God's. Every passing year, another lap around our little star called the sun. Another reminder of God's providence, his constancy, and his sustaining grace.

Perceive the voice of God through creation. Perceive the voice of God through creation. So again, I've already mentioned that some of the things that we see in nature that are amazing. To look in creation and see how God has created things. We've got so much technology now, videos that try to show us how the body works and what the satellites and all sorts of things that show us what the galaxy looks like, all of these different things. And we look back, we think about you know how amazing the creation is and how we are fearfully and wonderfully made. And it is a good thing. It is a good thing. Just like it said in the video, the heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Glory refers to God's weighty, radiant presence and honor. So the heavens and the skies aren't just what we can see, the blue, the clouds, but beyond that, the stars, the planets, the galaxies, all of those things proclaims God's wonder and amazement. And Isaiah 40 says, Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens. Who created all of these? And I don't know if you've read through the book of Job before. Job has some friends that say a lot of things that aren't worth saying. And in the end of the book of Job, then God addresses Job and says, Hey Job, did you create this? Did you do this? Were you there when I did this? And it was this conversation that's like, wow. But to look at that creation, to think about that. And then the next verse says, day after day they continue to speak, night after night, they make him known. And so as we continue to go on and day after day, season after season, God continues to speak through his creation, through general revelation. And so that should encourage us, that should motivate us, that should draw other people to Christ when they think about that, when they think about that. Because I personally feel that when people easily accept evolution and say that we by chance just happened to show up, and then over millions or billions of years or whatever, we evolved into all of this. I'm like, you definitely have more faith than I do. But people that want to reject God can't believe the creation story because then it would make them believe in God and they want to do everything they can to rebel against God, to deny God, so then they believe lies and things that to me don't make sense. So maybe you disagree, but I feel that is a huge thing. And when you just look at the heart or the eye or the nervous system or the way the human body is created and the differences between animals and the species and all of these different things, it's just too amazing to just happen by chance. Verse 3 they speak without a sound or word, their voice is never heard. So creation doesn't cry out in voice, it doesn't say Jehovah has made all of this. It just does what it was created to do in the way that it was created to be. And some of it has been kind of messed up because of the fall of man and sin and all of that cursing the land. I can't imagine what it was like when Adam and Eve showed up into this wonderful creation. And someday everything will be restored and made right, but that creation glorifies God that it speaks. Genesis 8 22 says, As long as the earth endures, endures, seed time and harvest, cold and heat, those seasons will never cease. And Ecclesiastes 3 says that he has set eternity in the human heart. Verse 4 then says, Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world, God has made a home in the heavens for the Son. So David is calling out the creation, and he's mentioning the interesting point that God has set the sun in its place. So it's amazing that we are the perfect distance and perfect angle from the sun for us to enjoy life the way that we have it, and that God sustains that. That is an exciting thing. Their message has gone throughout the earth. So that means that people all around the world look around and they see this. Now, some people live in urban cities full of pollution and smog. Oh, actually, we do right now too. Actually, when I looked out my back door yesterday, it reminded me of being a kid in Denver when it used to be covered by like the brown cloud and all of the smoke and everything makes it seem like it's just death. Boo. But hopefully it will all blow away. We can get back to enjoying those clear skies again, enjoying God's creation. But so David calls out this about creation. Their message has gone throughout the whole earth. People in different tribes, different languages, different cultural religions see the same creation. Sometimes they interpret it differently, but God's general revelation is so that we would know that He is His, that He has done this and we can be His. But verse 5 says, David says it bursts forth the sun, bursts forth like a radiant bridegroom after his wedding. It rejoices like a great athlete eager to run the race. So that does sound like sunrise, doesn't it, when it bursts forth like a radiant bridegroom? So I remember being a kid going to Camp Iderhaji in Bailey, Colorado. That camp was instrumental in my life, and we used to climb up to the top of this mountain in the darkness so we could watch the sun rise, so we could watch the sun pop up. Gets me real close to a God experience whenever I think of that. Maybe you've done that at the lake or whatever to watch the sunrise. And if you've never done that before, you should try it sometime with the sunset. And then the sun does its thing. So it travels around like a great athlete eager to run the race all the time. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west, and it does its thing. And so it's consistent and it's wonderful. It says, verse 6, the sun rises at one end of the heavens and follows its course to the other end. Nothing can hide from its heat. So here David calls out this praise to the Lord that says, Hey, when we think about the wonders of God, think about the creation and the things that we all experience, the things that we all see, the things that benefit us all. And Paul said the same thing in Romans about general revelation in Romans chapter 1. It says they know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them. For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities, his eternal power, and divine nature, so they have no excuse for not knowing God. So, number two, number two, prepare your life to be transformed by God's word. Prepare your life to be transformed by God's word. Those people that see the creation, those people that realize there must be a God who created this, how can I know them? If we throw them a Bible, they might not understand what they're supposed to do with it. So it's our duty and obligation to show them quickly that it is not a novel that starts in the beginning and then goes to the end, all in chronological order, but it's a library, like I said before, of 66 books in one. And so there's the Old Testament, the Old Covenant, and the New Covenant, and the Gospels and the Acts of the Church, and then the cryptic book of Revelation that talks about future things and the Psalms, which is we're in as a series, which was the hymn book for God's people, and we can learn so many things from that. Wisdom literature, like the book of Proverbs, all those different things. It's God's word. And so we look into it and we try to figure out what is for us, what is for our time, what is it that we need to learn, what is it that we need to stop doing it, what is it that we need to start doing? How can we be better at praising God? How can we live for God? How can we teach others to live for God? So we need to prepare our lives to be transformed by God's word. And that means that you've got to open it, you've got to get into it, you got to read it, or maybe you can listen to it. I mentioned it before, but on your phones, you can go to the Bible app or the UVersion Bible app. And not only can you choose a reading plan, but it will give you the scripture on the screen and the checklist to mark off your reading progress. But you can also push the button and it will read to you while it goes down the screen. So if you're not a great reader, you could do that. There are so many ways to hear and to get God's word into your heart and into your life so that you can start to obey it. And then sometimes overachievers, especially, will race through God's word. They're like, I got a Bible reading plan and I'm gonna race through it and get it done. And then they don't stop when God is speaking to their heart to focus on a certain thing. So maybe some days you open your Bible and you got your Bible reading plan, but you're like, wow, this is amazing. And you just kind of focus on that. You meditate on it, you run it through your mind, you try to see in your mind what it'd be like if you applied that to your life or you stopped doing that thing, and and that's what David talks about next. So, verse seven, the instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. So instructions, divine teaching or direction, it's perfect, it's complete, it's blameless, it's lacking nothing, restoring the soul, pointing to spiritual renewal and healing. His decrees, his testimonies are trustworthy, they're faithful and reliable. They offer wisdom not just to the intelligent, but even to the simple, those who are willing to learn. And so Paul told Timothy in 2 Timothy 3 16, all scripture is God breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. So all scripture would be the New Testament and the Old Testament. There are some who say, oh, you can just throw out the Old Testament, that's not for us. It's true that we're not bound to the Old Testament law, but there are so many things that you can learn from the characters of the Bible, so many things you could learn from God's Word in the Old Testament. It would be ridiculous to say, oh, just throw that part out. You don't need that. No. Instead, get yourself a full Bible. So we give out New Testaments, but we don't give out full Bibles. And so there's a couple, actually, there's a couple Bibles, full Bibles out there, but you really need to get yourself your own Bible. And you probably should get yourself a good study Bible. So I really like the life application study Bible. That's a good one. There's lots of other ones too. David says, verse 8, the commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are clear, giving insight for living. Isn't that what you want? Don't you want to know how to live this life? Don't you want to know the strategies to be successful? The strategies to be blessed by God, the strategies to live a life that makes a difference, one that doesn't lead to guilt or regret, one that doesn't lead to sadness. There's a lot of things in life that are sad and difficult. And you can be so in love with the Lord and following the Lord really carefully and still go through difficulty and sadness. But the joy of the Lord comes from knowing what God's word says and knowing that people before you that served God faithfully at times were really sad. Like Jeremiah, for instance, he was faithful to serve God, but he's also known as the weeping prophet. Just so many sad things. It was primarily caused by the people around him, not by his own choices. But the voice of the Lord, to hear the voice of the Lord is a good thing. And to have these commandments to bring joy to the heart, the commands of the Lord giving insight for living. When you think about God's voice, if you've never heard God's voice, if you never spent any time in scripture, then you might not know what it sounds like. I mean, think about think about your mother or your father or somebody that you grew up with, somebody that you've been with for years. I would bet that if we blindfolded you and had that that you didn't know those people were here, and had them come up behind you and start talking, that you'd be immediately able to go, mom or dad, or Bill, or whatever, because you would know their voice, because you've heard it for so long. And the same thing is true when you hear God's voice through Scripture, you are able to be better discerning. You are able to know the things of the Lord. You're able to know God's voice. The reverence for the Lord is pure, lasting forever. The laws of the Lord are true, each one is fair. So reverence, another version says, the fear of the Lord. So it's the fruit of a life shaped by Scripture. It's pure, untainted by manipulation or corruption, and it endures forever. So again, there are certain Old Testament laws that we don't follow, but the general laws of the way that God works and the way that God is continues on. And so Proverbs 1 7 says, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. And Jesus in John 17 17 said, Sanctify them by the truth. Your word is truth. So, are you plugged in to God's word? Do you spend time in God's word? It would be so much better if you spent seven minutes in God's Word each day than if you didn't spend any time at all. Some people think, well, I just don't have the time. Well, you can make the time, you can find a way to fit it in. It can be a priority in your life, it can be an investment, and that can make a difference, then David says about God's word and his ways, that they are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold. So here's an interesting thing about gold is that gold holds its value. So if you had a bar of gold, so I'm not sure a bar of gold is like 400 ounces or something like that, and you had that bar of gold, you would have been able to buy a house in 1976 with that bar of gold. And so if you roll forward to 2025 with the price of gold, not only would you be able to buy a normal house, but in some areas you'd be able to buy too, because gold has increased in value and it did not decrease in value. And God's word in your life increases in value. God's word applied in your life not only makes you more valuable, not only makes it more valuable in your life, but it makes you more valuable to other people. It makes you more valuable so that you can serve the Lord. Sometimes you can guide and direct and teach and help as you serve the Lord. You can be a great encouragement to someone. You can train up somebody that might be significantly used of the Lord. Maybe your role, God has created you and like an assistant role, a training role, to train up somebody that's going to be a great man or woman of God. And so they're going to take off in life. And you're going to look back and say, I remember when they were in my class, or I remember when they were in my small group, or I remember when I helped with vacation Bible school, or I helped pay for them to go to camp or whatever, and they they came to Jesus and look at them now, serving the Lord. That is a good exciting thing to think about. But they are more desirable than gold, God's words. They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the honeycomb. So that means it's pleasant, it's good. Do you spend time in God's Word? And you're like, oh, that is awesome. I have a lot of Bibles. And I know that if you have a Bible that's really worn out, it makes you look super spiritual. If you have a Bible that's really worn out and held together with duct tape and all the pages are falling out, though, I'm like, don't you love the Bible enough that you'd want to go buy a new copy? But when you spend time in God's Word, and I spend time in God's Word, I have a tendency to highlight things. And then when I'm discouraged or whatever, I'll just read those things that I really like. I spend a lot of time in 1 Peter. I'll be like, oh yeah, it's my favorite place. And maybe you do the same thing too. I'd encourage you to enjoy all of the Word of God instead of just getting focused on a few spaces. But then again, maybe those few spaces are a place that God is going to use you to invest in someone's life. So when you read God's word, verse 11 says, they are a warning to your servant, a great reward to those who obey them. Isn't it wonderful when you see the warning and it keeps you from the trouble that it could cause? It keeps you from the sadness. It keeps you like in Proverbs, or Proverbs 5 or something like that, where it talks about a guy staying away from the adulteress, the wayward wife and all that. Great warnings there. So many warnings in scripture that says, don't do this. And it's not because God's trying to take away your fun, it's because he's trying to keep you from ruining your life, from ruining your relationships. It can be a sad thing when you do that. A great reward for those who obey him, which means when you put it into practice, there is great reward. What are the rewards? A life, like I mentioned in the beginning, a life lived without regret. People trust you, people trust your integrity. You don't look back and remember those sins of the past that leads you to be sad. Verse 26 of John 14, Jesus says, But the advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. So Jesus knew that people were going to need to be encouraged. People are they would need help understanding scripture, applying scripture. So we have the Holy Spirit. When we come to Christ, we receive the Holy Spirit. And so we should pursue, number three, pursue obedience to what God has spoken and revealed. To pursue obedience to what God has spoken and revealed. So instead I have like a file folder, like full of like scraps of paper or whatever. A lot of them are like prayers where I've asked God to provide for something or do something or this trouble or this whatever I felt. And then I write it down, pray about it, and throw it in the file. Some people like have perfect, wonderful journals. So I always like to start writing and then I like make a mistake and I'm like, now I gotta throw out that page. And so I don't have a perfect life, which means I wouldn't have a perfect journal. So I just have a mess. So maybe someday when I die, maybe somebody wants to piece those together and see if there's anything there. But nonetheless, to pursue obedience to what God has spoken, to pursue obedience and to know that the reason that you chose to do this or not to do this, the reason that you chose to invest in this, or the reason you chose to pursue this thing, is because what you read in God's Word and how you applied it. You even had people that you talked to about and said, Am I doing this right? Is this the right thing? I mentioned before when I went to this big church in Eden Prairie that my wife stayed at home with the kids and I didn't make much money, but we were thinking about tithing because we wanted to do God's will. And I talked to every pastor, and they all had great insight. Then I called the lead pastor, and he actually answered at his house. I felt like I was talking to the president. I'm like, I feel like God wants us to tithe, but we just don't have enough money. And he said, Well, you should give something, and you should you should like trust God, and as you trust God more, you can give more. And so we started to trust God, and then that led to us giving and then quickly getting a raise and a promotion and all of these things. And it was because I really wanted to know what God's word said about what the way I was living my life and if I could trust God, like it says about God loves a cheerful giver and planting seeds and how God will provide those things. So verse four verse 12. David says, How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults. So here this is David saying, I don't even know the things that I do that offend God. So would you please show me the things that might be going on that I don't even know is sin, so that I could be living right. Cleanse me from these hidden faults, these ones that I don't know. So then he says, Keep your servant from deliberate sins, don't let them control me, then I will be free of guilt and innocent of great sin. And it is so easy for us to give in to certain sins and to just say, I know I was told that this wasn't a good thing to do, I know it's wrong, but I just want to do it. Um, someone had said that character is who you are and what you do when no one's looking. And so David is praying, you know, keep your servant from deliberate sins, don't let them control me. And then he ends it with verse 14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. And that is the best verse of it all. I mean, they've actually put that to lyrics as a song, but the words of your mouth, the things that you say, and the things that you think and the things that are going through your mind, are they pleasing to God? O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. And so I hope that you'll spend time to read through the Psalms. This is a series in the Psalms, so we'll continue to look at more Psalms. But in Psalm 95, it says, For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if you would only hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. And then so the Israelites they hardened their hearts and they suffered for it when they didn't follow God. Jesus said, My sheep, listen to my voice. I know them, and they follow me. Are you one of Jesus' sheep? Maybe you aren't. Maybe you haven't received Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Maybe today's the day to do that. So we are all sinners in need of salvation. And when we receive that salvation, we admit that we are sinners and that Jesus died on the cross for our sin, that he rose again, and that by placing our faith in him, by turning our back on sin and running towards Jesus, that we can be saved and put in a new relationship. Maybe you'd pray something like, Lord Jesus, I am a sinner. Please forgive me of my sin. I know that you died on the cross and rose again and made it possible for this forgiveness, for this payment. So please, Lord, apply that to my life. Save me and make me the person you created me to be. I want to follow you. Or maybe you are a Christ follower who fell away and you want to recommit your life and say, Jesus, I haven't been spending time in your word. I don't feel any peace about this. Lord, I want to recommit my life to you and follow you to learn to do your will all my days, all your ways. In Jesus' name. Colossians 3 15 says, Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you are called to peace and be thankful.
