the theme that came up."},{"startTime":90.56,"endTime":92.92,"body":"And it actually stems from the Gallup book"},{"startTime":92.92,"endTime":96.58,"body":"that came out a few years ago called \"It's the Manager\""},{"startTime":96.58,"endTime":100.6,"body":"which they surveyed thousands of work,"},{"startTime":100.6,"endTime":102.4,"body":"individuals in the workplace."},{"startTime":102.4,"endTime":106.68,"body":"And it's that identification of what does this new generation"},{"startTime":106.68,"endTime":111.14,"body":"particularly millennials want in a boss?"},{"startTime":111.14,"endTime":114.94,"body":"How has their perspective of a boss changed?"},{"startTime":114.94,"endTime":117.02,"body":"And this one word change has,"},{"startTime":117.02,"endTime":119.4,"body":"I think it's really helpful to adjust that mindset."},{"startTime":119.4,"endTime":121.52,"body":"They don't want a OD"},{"startTime":208.82,"endTime":211.36,"body":"or executive element round table group."},{"startTime":211.36,"endTime":214.1,"body":"We have a round table group in Milwaukee area"},{"startTime":214.1,"endTime":216.04,"body":"where my home base is,"},{"startTime":216.04,"endTime":218.62,"body":"and we gather every quarter or so with them."},{"startTime":218.62,"endTime":220.74,"body":"And one of the things we were talking about"},{"startTime":220.74,"endTime":225.74,"body":"is the impact that managers have and the 70% number."},{"startTime":227.34,"endTime":232.24,"body":"70% that Gallup has come out with time and time again,"},{"startTime":232.24,"endTime":236.18,"body":"and it showcases the importance of 70%"},{"startTime":236.18,"endTime":240.82,"body":"of a person's engagement is because"},{"startTime":240.82,"endTime":243.88,"body":"and directly related to their manager."},{"startTime":243.88,"endTime":246.98,"body":"70% and you sit back and you say, okay,"},{"startTime":246.98,"endTime":251.98,"body":"is it 79 or 70, 75, 65, 60%?"},{"startTime":251.98,"endTime":253.22,"body":"I don't care."},{"startTime":253.22,"endTime":254.7,"body":"It's a lot."},{"startTime":254.7,"endTime":256.24,"body":"It's a step."},{"startTime":283.86,"endTime":288.86,"body":"This idea that people can get promoted and figure it out,"},{"startTime":288.86,"endTime":294.9,"body":"or you can just, I mean, maybe it happens,"},{"startTime":294.9,"endTime":298.06,"body":"but really how can we accelerate that?"},{"startTime":298.06,"endTime":301.66,"body":"How can we, oh, that's a whole nother topic, but anyway."},{"startTime":301.66,"endTime":302.88,"body":"- Oh, it's a big topic."},{"startTime":302.88,"endTime":305.78,"body":"I can tell you're a little passionate about it."},{"startTime":305.78,"endTime":307.6,"body":"As you get energized and talking,"},{"startTime":307.6,"endTime":310.9,"body":"because no, learning how to be a good supervisor."},{"startTime":338.7,"endTime":342.46,"body":"What, man, so we can get the whole Spider-Man reference,"},{"startTime":342.46,"endTime":345.38,"body":"with great power comes great responsibility."},{"startTime":345.38,"endTime":348.7,"body":"Yes, when you're promoted, when you're a manager,"},{"startTime":348.7,"endTime":353.06,"body":"a supervisor, a boss, oh, the tremendous level"},{"startTime":353.06,"endTime":356.02,"body":"of influence you can have on those that you lead."},{"startTime":356.02,"endTime":361.3,"body":"Okay, so let me pivot with short little tangent here."},{"startTime":361.3,"endTime":364.06,"body":"As you brought up that 70%,"},{"startTime":364.06,"endTime":366.28,"body":"and I liked the way you introduced that,"},{"startTime":367.1,"endTime":370.5,"body":"it can be 65, it could be 70,"},{"startTime":370.5,"endTime":373.08,"body":"the numbers aren't as important."},{"startTime":373.08,"endTime":377.6,"body":"This is where I think data points are more helpful"},{"startTime":377.6,"endTime":380.34,"body":"than the actual data point itself,"},{"startTime":380.34,"endTime":384.62,"body":"but the conversation that the data point starts."},{"startTime":384.62,"endTime":385.46,"body":"Well said."},{"startTime":385.46,"endTime":387.62,"body":"And whether that's the conversation with yourself,"},{"startTime":387.62,"endTime":391.06,"body":"as you do a little introspection and self-reflection,"},{"startTime":391.06,"endTime":393.28,"body":"or whether it's a conversation you share with others"},{"startTime":393.28,"endTime":396.82,"body":"and say, hey, what do you think of this?"},{"startTime":396.82,"endTime":397.94,"body":"How does this fit?"},{"startTime":397.94,"endTime":400.58,"body":"And I think that's just something,"},{"startTime":400.58,"endTime":403.9,"body":"whether we're pulling a data point from Gallup or others,"},{"startTime":403.9,"endTime":406.4,"body":"use them as conversation help brainstorm,"},{"startTime":478.34,"endTime":479.44,"body":"or we would listen to it."},{"startTime":479.44,"endTime":481.08,"body":"And you know, as an eight-year-old,"},{"startTime":481.08,"endTime":483.12,"body":"or a 10-year-old, or a 12-year-old,"},{"startTime":483.12,"endTime":486.92,"body":"not a lot to add, but he likes to process out loud,"},{"startTime":486.92,"endTime":488.38,"body":"and he gets excited about stuff,"},{"startTime":488.38,"endTime":489.88,"body":"and so he's sharing this stuff."},{"startTime":489.88,"endTime":493.1,"body":"So Peter, share with everybody"},{"startTime":493.1,"endTime":497.44,"body":"the origin of this ideal boss supermarket,"},{"startTime":539.36,"endTime":543.52,"body":"and he notices the cover of Reader's Digest."},{"startTime":543.52,"endTime":546.52,"body":"New listeners, Reader's Digest is a magazine."},{"startTime":546.52,"endTime":549.12,"body":"- Reader's Digest, that's no way that is, yeah."},{"startTime":549.12,"endTime":552.92,"body":"- A magazine that was published that would summarize books"},{"startTime":552.92,"endTime":555.64,"body":"and other articles and things like that."},{"startTime":555.64,"endTime":560.24,"body":"Just a staple at the supermarket checkout line."},{"startTime":560.24,"endTime":562.0,"body":"Kind of the size of a TV guide."},{"startTime":562.0,"endTime":563.92,"body":"And now as I reference that,"},{"startTime":563.92,"endTime":566.26,"body":"many people don't even remember what a TV guide is,"},{"startTime":566.26,"endTime":567.64,"body":"but that's okay."},{"startTime":567.64,"endTime":571.92,"body":"So about half size article, or half size magazine."},{"startTime":571.92,"endTime":576.92,"body":"So Reader's Digest on the cover was this question."},{"startTime":576.92,"endTime":583.42,"body":"Said the one question that will save your marriage."},{"startTime":583.42,"endTime":584.64,"body":"The one question."},{"startTime":584.64,"endTime":587.52,"body":"Not the 15, not the 10, not the three,"},{"startTime":587.52,"endTime":590.4,"body":"but the one single question that will save your marriage."},{"startTime":590.4,"endTime":594.2,"body":"So his dad has relayed this, he grabs it,"},{"startTime":594.2,"endTime":597.96,"body":"puts it down on the checkout area, buys the magazine,"},{"startTime":597.96,"endTime":601.24,"body":"and as he's getting into the car, he opens it up."},{"startTime":601.24,"endTime":603.96,"body":"He's like, great, one question."},{"startTime":603.96,"endTime":607.62,"body":"And then he sees the question, and the question is this."},{"startTime":607.62,"endTime":611.34,"body":"What is it like to be married to me?"},{"startTime":611.34,"endTime":615.8,"body":"Is the question that you're supposed to ask."},{"startTime":615.8,"endTime":617.54,"body":"And like, wow, that cuts deep."},{"startTime":617.54,"endTime":619.4,"body":"What is it like to be married to me?"},{"startTime":619.4,"endTime":622.88,"body":"So then dad, as he's thinking about leadership"},{"startTime":622.88,"endTime":625.36,"body":"and professional, obviously he tries to apply this"},{"startTime":625.36,"endTime":629.28,"body":"at home in his own marriage, but he thinks, wow,"},{"startTime":629.28,"endTime":631.72,"body":"how can this be applied professionally?"},{"startTime":631.72,"endTime":635.02,"body":"So he thinks about another relationship of a boss"},{"startTime":635.02,"endTime":639.36,"body":"with those on their team."},{"startTime":639.36,"endTime":642.26,"body":"What is it like to work for me?"},{"startTime":642.26,"endTime":648.96,"body":"And that is the one question that can really help shape"},{"startTime":648.96,"endTime":652.6,"body":"and improve your ability to be a better boss."},{"startTime":652.6,"endTime":655.32,"body":"To look at it through the eyes, through the lens,"},{"startTime":655.32,"endTime":658.74,"body":"in the shoes of those you are leading and supervising."},{"startTime":658.74,"endTime":661.0,"body":"So that's a little memory lane,"},{"startTime":661.0,"endTime":664.84,"body":"and this is going back decades, as dad would talk about"},{"startTime":664.84,"endTime":667.56,"body":"that one Reader's Digest article,"},{"startTime":667.56,"endTime":670.9,"body":"and how then he made that adjustment transition"},{"startTime":670.9,"endTime":673.42,"body":"into the professional application."},{"startTime":673.42,"endTime":676.4,"body":"- Oh, so good."},{"startTime":676.4,"endTime":680.12,"body":"So the one question, what is it like to work for me?"},{"startTime":680.12,"endTime":683.72,"body":"And I remember distinctly hearing growing up"},{"startTime":683.72,"endTime":687.24,"body":"this activity of the ideal boss activities."},{"startTime":687.24,"endTime":692.68,"body":"And so what that involves is getting together"},{"startTime":692.68,"endTime":695.7,"body":"a group of leaders and being able to have them"},{"startTime":695.7,"endTime":699.56,"body":"challenge each other and create a short list,"},{"startTime":699.56,"endTime":703.56,"body":"five or 10 items, attributes, characteristics, skills,"},{"startTime":703.56,"endTime":708.0,"body":"to describe what is the ideal boss that we want,"},{"startTime":708.0,"endTime":712.8,"body":"that we expect, and that we can then hold ourselves to"},{"startTime":712.8,"endTime":716.28,"body":"as a comparison set to help answer that question."},{"startTime":716.28,"endTime":719.64,"body":"What would it be like, what is it like to work for me?"},{"startTime":719.64,"endTime":722.72,"body":"What do we compare ourselves against?"},{"startTime":722.72,"endTime":725.54,"body":"- And as we run that exercise in workshops,"},{"startTime":725.54,"endTime":728.46,"body":"and in the past as dad would always call them seminars,"},{"startTime":728.46,"endTime":733.04,"body":"you're making this list thinking through"},{"startTime":733.04,"endTime":736.64,"body":"all of the bosses you might have experienced in your life."},{"startTime":736.64,"endTime":740.16,"body":"And you start to summarize this,"},{"startTime":740.16,"endTime":742.92,"body":"and it's after that list is made"},{"startTime":742.92,"endTime":745.72,"body":"that then you pose that question,"},{"startTime":745.72,"endTime":748.72,"body":"why is this list not describing you?"},{"startTime":748.72,"endTime":753.36,"body":"Or what is it about this list that doesn't fit you?"},{"startTime":753.36,"endTime":754.2,"body":"Or how do you change?"},{"startTime":754.2,"endTime":757.56,"body":"'Cause you go from this Mary Poppins list"},{"startTime":757.56,"endTime":760.02,"body":"of all of the ideal perfect things,"},{"startTime":760.02,"endTime":763.38,"body":"but then it's that transition to,"},{"startTime":763.38,"endTime":767.16,"body":"oh, I'm supposed to be this."},{"startTime":767.16,"endTime":773.34,"body":"That's that question, what is it like to work for me?"},{"startTime":773.34,"endTime":775.72,"body":"So the two by four across the head of,"},{"startTime":775.72,"endTime":778.96,"body":"oh my, what do I need to change?"},{"startTime":778.96,"endTime":780.1,"body":"How can I improve?"},{"startTime":780.1,"endTime":782.78,"body":"- Oh, so good."},{"startTime":782.78,"endTime":786.1,"body":"And I can't tell you how many leaders that I've,"},{"startTime":786.1,"endTime":788.1,"body":"especially through a one-on-one coaching"},{"startTime":788.1,"endTime":791.7,"body":"or different workshops have challenged them"},{"startTime":791.7,"endTime":795.86,"body":"to ask that question of others."},{"startTime":795.86,"endTime":798.84,"body":"And at a minimum, at least ask themselves."},{"startTime":798.84,"endTime":801.98,"body":"And then I'll say, if you're feeling courageous,"},{"startTime":801.98,"endTime":804.16,"body":"you can ask others, you can ask your team,"},{"startTime":804.16,"endTime":806.66,"body":"you can ask your peers,"},{"startTime":806.66,"endTime":808.84,"body":"you can ask others with whom you work,"},{"startTime":808.84,"endTime":810.84,"body":"what is it like to work for me?"},{"startTime":810.84,"endTime":813.16,"body":"And to do a deep reflection,"},{"startTime":813.16,"endTime":815.92,"body":"to see am I showing up as the kind of person?"},{"startTime":815.92,"endTime":819.76,"body":"So this activity for all of our listeners,"},{"startTime":819.76,"endTime":821.2,"body":"two things to keep in mind."},{"startTime":821.2,"endTime":823.04,"body":"If you wanna do this yourself,"},{"startTime":823.04,"endTime":825.48,"body":"be asking yourself, what is it like to work for me"},{"startTime":825.48,"endTime":830.12,"body":"and have that honest reflection, reflective conversation."},{"startTime":830.12,"endTime":833.86,"body":"But the other activity is to begin to identify"},{"startTime":833.86,"endTime":836.4,"body":"what is your ideal boss?"},{"startTime":836.4,"endTime":837.24,"body":"- Yeah."},{"startTime":837.24,"endTime":839.28,"body":"- What is that list
