right?"},{"startTime":165.52,"endTime":167.14,"body":"Exciting topic, no, it's great."},{"startTime":167.14,"endTime":171.72,"body":"The power of sleep is so important, so important,"},{"startTime":171.72,"endTime":173.44,"body":"and we're learning much more"},{"startTime":173.44,"endTime":175.16,"body":"about some of the benefits of sleep."},{"startTime":175.16,"endTime":176.8,"body":"So here's a fact."},{"startTime":176.8,"endTime":179.6,"body":"The fact is we're learning, so we'll get a little,"},{"startTime":179.6,"endTime":182.52,"body":"you know, get into the body, the anatomy today."},{"startTime":182.52,"endTime":186.88,"body":"So in our bodies, we have lymph nodes, okay?"},{"startTime":186.88,"endTime":190.52,"body":"The lymphatic system, and the function of that system"},{"startTime":190.52,"endTime":195.44,"body":"is basically to help get rid of cellular waste in our body."},{"startTime":195.44,"endTime":198.14,"body":"All right, every cell we have in our body produces waste,"},{"startTime":198.14,"endTime":200.16,"body":"and there's a means by which we have to get rid"},{"startTime":200.16,"endTime":202.92,"body":"of that waste, helps us be healthy."},{"startTime":202.92,"endTime":207.2,"body":"But here's the fascinating thing is there are no lymph nodes."},{"startTime":207.2,"endTime":210.76,"body":"The lymphatic system does not extend into the brain."},{"startTime":210.76,"endTime":213.8,"body":"And so for a long while, the medical community"},{"startTime":213.8,"endTime":217.32,"body":"was just absolutely fascinated, or actually confused by,"},{"startTime":217.32,"endTime":220.0,"body":"well, what about the brain?"},{"startTime":220.0,"endTime":222.1,"body":"The brain has a whole lot of cells,"},{"startTime":222.1,"endTime":224.48,"body":"and the brain's going to produce some cellular waste."},{"startTime":224.48,"endTime":228.02,"body":"So how does the brain clean itself?"},{"startTime":229.2,"endTime":231.52,"body":"And it wasn't until a little while ago"},{"startTime":231.52,"endTime":234.92,"body":"when they started to do some imaging of the brain"},{"startTime":234.92,"endTime":236.76,"body":"while you're sleeping."},{"startTime":236.76,"endTime":241.56,"body":"And what they found is the brain actually starts to shrink"},{"startTime":241.56,"endTime":242.4,"body":"while you sleep."},{"startTime":242.4,"endTime":245.28,"body":"As you get in that kind of stage two non-REM sleep,"},{"startTime":245.28,"endTime":247.34,"body":"your brain starts to shrink,"},{"startTime":247.34,"endTime":252.34,"body":"and cerebral spinal fluid goes all around the brain,"},{"startTime":252.34,"endTime":255.08,"body":"and it flushes it, it washes it out."},{"startTime":255.08,"endTime":259.54,"body":"So literally while you sleep, your brain is having a bath."},{"startTime":259.54,"endTime":263.32,"body":"And it's not just that it's washing out"},{"startTime":263.32,"endTime":266.6,"body":"that cellular waste, but one of the most important things"},{"startTime":266.6,"endTime":268.66,"body":"they find that it washes out"},{"startTime":268.66,"endTime":271.24,"body":"is what's called amyloid beta proteins."},{"startTime":271.24,"endTime":274.68,"body":"Now, why do I bring that one up?"},{"startTime":274.68,"endTime":276.68,"body":"Besides the fact that it's fun to say,"},{"startTime":276.68,"endTime":279.1,"body":"amyloid beta proteins, say that 10 times."},{"startTime":279.1,"endTime":282.48,"body":"But amyloid beta proteins,"},{"startTime":282.48,"endTime":285.48,"body":"those are the primary components"},{"startTime":285.48,"endTime":287.92,"body":"that would build what's called brain plaque,"},{"startTime":287.92,"endTime":292.32,"body":"which the buildup of which is a significant contributor"},{"startTime":292.32,"endTime":293.96,"body":"to the development of Alzheimer's."},{"startTime":293.96,"endTime":299.24,"body":"So we want to keep the buildup of brain plaque low."},{"startTime":299.24,"endTime":304.5,"body":"We need sleep in order to wash our brain."},{"startTime":304.5,"endTime":308.76,"body":"So if we want to help our brain function longer,"},{"startTime":308.76,"endTime":310.98,"body":"sleep's a great way to help with that."},{"startTime":310.98,"endTime":312.8,"body":"So there's a little fun fact about"},{"startTime":312.8,"endTime":315.56,"body":"why it is good to get your sleep at night."},{"startTime":315.56,"endTime":317.26,"body":"You got to give your brain a bath."},{"startTime":317.26,"endTime":323.2,"body":"- Now, I just want to be clear with all of our listeners."},{"startTime":323.2,"endTime":325.84,"body":"I want them to make sure they know,"},{"startTime":325.84,"endTime":328.32,"body":"we make sure that they know your background, Peter,"},{"startTime":328.32,"endTime":331.84,"body":"because this is Dr. Peter factor,"},{"startTime":352.84,"endTime":355.24,"body":"you know, we've all been hearing how important sleep is,"},{"startTime":355.24,"endTime":356.84,"body":"but to really understand the fact"},{"startTime":356.84,"endTime":360.54,"body":"that it actually helps cleanse our brains"},{"startTime":360.54,"endTime":364.04,"body":"so that it gets rid of all of these dead cells"},{"startTime":364.04,"endTime":367.36,"body":"that just take up space and in fact"},{"startTime":367.36,"endTime":371.66,"body":"can contribute to buildup, this plaque-like stuff."},{"startTime":371.66,"endTime":372.5,"body":"- Yeah."},{"startTime":372.5,"endTime":376.88,"body":"- Anyway, it's very valuable for us to pay attention to."},{"startTime":376.88,"endTime":377.72,"body":"- It is."},{"startTime":377.72,"endTime":379.32,"body":"I mean, as we learn more and more,"},{"startTime":379.32,"endTime":382.16,"body":"and what's fascinating is just how much we're learning"},{"startTime":382.16,"endTime":384.44,"body":"about the functions of not only the brain,"},{"startTime":384.44,"endTime":386.8,"body":"but what we can do to best take care of it."},{"startTime":386.8,"endTime":390.2,"body":"We can go for hours deep into those."},{"startTime":390.2,"endTime":395.2,"body":"Yeah, that's my side job, so to speak, the psychologist."},{"startTime":395.7,"endTime":397.42,"body":"You bring a shrink to the podcast,"},{"startTime":397.42,"endTime":398.86,"body":"you're going to get some comments like don't know about you,"},{"startTime":402.82,"endTime":406.46,"body":"but if you had asked me 20, 30 years ago"},{"startTime":406.46,"endTime":409.4,"body":"when we all kind of started our careers here,"},{"startTime":409.4,"endTime":412.1,"body":"that I'd be talking about sleep"},{"startTime":412.1,"endTime":414.54,"body":"to help leaders show up effectively,"},{"startTime":414.54,"endTime":416.34,"body":"I would have said you're joking."},{"startTime":416.34,"endTime":420.62,"body":"But I can't tell you how many times sleep becomes a factor"},{"startTime":420.62,"endTime":424.54,"body":"in helping leaders show up as their best self,"},{"startTime":424.54,"endTime":426.54,"body":"how they're taking care of themselves,"},{"startTime":426.54,"endTime":428.98,"body":"are they getting sufficient amounts of sleep?"},{"startTime":428.98,"endTime":433.54,"body":"Are they able to rest so that they aren't on all the time?"},{"startTime":433.54,"endTime":437.02,"body":"Because that really gets in the way of,"},{"startTime":437.02,"endTime":439.5,"body":"especially executives and middle managers"},{"startTime":439.5,"endTime":441.66,"body":"who are just going nonstop,"},{"startTime":441.66,"endTime":443.88,"body":"to be able to then show up as their best self"},{"startTime":443.88,"endTime":446.62,"body":"in the times that make the most sense for them,"},{"startTime":446.62,"endTime":448.66,"body":"and that they can rest as well."},{"startTime":448.66,"endTime":451.3,"body":"So anyway, very valuable stuff."},{"startTime":451.3,"endTime":454.18,"body":"- Yeah, and not only for you as an individual"},{"startTime":454.18,"endTime":456.54,"body":"as a leader, but think about the behaviors"},{"startTime":456.54,"endTime":459.5,"body":"you're modeling for those around you,"},{"startTime":459.5,"endTime":462.58,"body":"as you are a boss to others, as your coworkers, whatever,"},{"startTime":462.58,"endTime":465.82,"body":"helping to model some of those more healthy behaviors"},{"startTime":465.82,"endTime":467.98,"body":"to be able to get some good sleep."},{"startTime":467.98,"endTime":470.66,"body":"So maybe we'll throw in some other sleep 15."},{"startTime":570.56,"endTime":574.42,"body":"And so anyway, as we grew up there,"},{"startTime":574.42,"endTime":579.06,"body":"I went back to Portland maybe 15 years ago or so,"},{"startTime":579.06,"endTime":582.22,"body":"went out to a Trailblazers game with a good friend of mine,"},{"startTime":582.22,"endTime":584.8,"body":"and he asked me this question,"},{"startTime":584.8,"endTime":588.34,"body":"and it has stayed with me ever since."},{"startTime":588.34,"endTime":591.46,"body":"And he said, \"Hey, so you work a lot\""},{"startTime":591.46,"endTime":592.78,"body":"\"with leadership development, right?\""},{"startTime":592.78,"endTime":593.62,"body":"I'm like, \"Yeah.\""},{"startTime":593.62,"endTime":595.16,"body":"He said, \"So what is it?\""},{"startTime":595.16,"endTime":598.18,"body":"\"What's the one thing that leaders need to
