flight,"},{"startTime":158.36,"endTime":159.56,"body":"putting people in space,"},{"startTime":159.56,"endTime":164.56,"body":"our employees monitor the international space station 24/7,"},{"startTime":165.04,"endTime":168.92,"body":"365, so our flight controllers are there commanding"},{"startTime":168.92,"endTime":171.44,"body":"and making sure the crew and the vehicle stay safe."},{"startTime":171.44,"endTime":176.16,"body":"We're also working on going to the moon and to Mars, right?"},{"startTime":176.16,"endTime":179.96,"body":"So that's the next generation of engineers"},{"startTime":179.96,"endTime":182.44,"body":"are gonna be taxed with those problems."},{"startTime":182.44,"endTime":185.0,"body":"We provide all the human individuals"},{"startTime":206.96,"endTime":211.0,"body":"that are doing the jobs that I grew up doing over 35 years,"},{"startTime":211.0,"endTime":214.28,"body":"including training astronauts and doing flight control"},{"startTime":214.28,"endTime":216.8,"body":"and really just supporting that mission"},{"startTime":216.8,"endTime":218.0,"body":"we call it human space flight,"},{"startTime":218.0,"endTime":219.4,"body":"which is a great endeavor,"},{"startTime":219.4,"endTime":221.6,"body":"not only for our nation, but for our facility."},{"startTime":241.12,"endTime":244.84,"body":"- Yeah, it's a kind of a daunting task,"},{"startTime":244.84,"endTime":247.44,"body":"but certainly it is a team effort."},{"startTime":247.44,"endTime":249.72,"body":"It's a team effort of KBR combined"},{"startTime":249.72,"endTime":252.12,"body":"with our teammate companies combined with of astronauts,"},{"startTime":276.56,"endTime":279.56,"body":"people who need to be able to make important decisions"},{"startTime":279.56,"endTime":281.76,"body":"at key points."},{"startTime":281.76,"endTime":285.28,"body":"Give us a sense of some of the leadership lessons,"},{"startTime":285.28,"endTime":288.04,"body":"so to speak, that you've learned over the years,"},{"startTime":288.04,"endTime":289.96,"body":"that you've seen in action."},{"startTime":289.96,"endTime":292.32,"body":"Talk to us a little bit about what has stood out"},{"startTime":292.32,"endTime":294.42,"body":"across your experience, if you don't mind."},{"startTime":294.42,"endTime":297.76,"body":"- I think when I look back at instructing,"},{"startTime":297.76,"endTime":298.76,"body":"there's a couple of things"},{"startTime":298.76,"endTime":300.96,"body":"and let's just take human space flight"},{"startTime":300.96,"endTime":303.28,"body":"and having to make decisions."},{"startTime":303.28,"endTime":308.16,"body":"So we bring in lots of entry level professional young people"},{"startTime":308.16,"endTime":311.08,"body":"if operations is a young person's game."},{"startTime":311.08,"endTime":314.92,"body":"And we teach them very early on to make decisions"},{"startTime":314.92,"endTime":317.68,"body":"without having all the information."},{"startTime":317.68,"endTime":319.52,"body":"So again, in leadership,"},{"startTime":319.52,"endTime":322.4,"body":"and when you're going through your first line leader,"},{"startTime":322.4,"endTime":323.72,"body":"you're gonna have to make decisions"},{"startTime":323.72,"endTime":326.56,"body":"where you're not gonna have 100% of the information."},{"startTime":326.56,"endTime":328.0,"body":"You're gonna have to figure out"},{"startTime":328.0,"endTime":330.64,"body":"what risk-based decision making is."},{"startTime":330.64,"endTime":331.96,"body":"How do I connect dots?"},{"startTime":331.96,"endTime":333.28,"body":"How do I use my gut?"},{"startTime":333.28,"endTime":336.52,"body":"How do I use this plethora of resources"},{"startTime":336.52,"endTime":339.48,"body":"of all the people that surround me to make the best decisions?"},{"startTime":339.48,"endTime":343.44,"body":"And so I think it specifically flight operations,"},{"startTime":343.44,"endTime":344.48,"body":"it's what we call it at NASA,"},{"startTime":344.48,"endTime":347.08,"body":"it does that in an extraordinary way."},{"startTime":347.08,"endTime":350.24,"body":"And it has us grow young leaders."},{"startTime":350.24,"endTime":351.84,"body":"You're learning to do these things"},{"startTime":351.84,"endTime":353.84,"body":"and you don't even know you're being taught."},{"startTime":353.84,"endTime":355.88,"body":"So just the culture that we have,"},{"startTime":355.88,"endTime":359.36,"body":"the DNA that we instill in our team"},{"startTime":359.36,"endTime":363.48,"body":"of how to make decisions, I think is one of the key things."},{"startTime":363.48,"endTime":365.36,"body":"- So I think that's a great point you bring up"},{"startTime":365.36,"endTime":370.36,"body":"about how you grow young professionals into leaders."},{"startTime":370.36,"endTime":374.04,"body":"What are some specific things you've observed over the years"},{"startTime":374.04,"endTime":377.24,"body":"that really do help take those young professionals,"},{"startTime":377.24,"endTime":379.76,"body":"kind of open their aperture a little bit,"},{"startTime":379.76,"endTime":382.96,"body":"open their eyes to see what it means to be a leader?"},{"startTime":382.96,"endTime":386.92,"body":"- I always tell people, when you're leading,"},{"startTime":386.92,"endTime":388.36,"body":"you're not leading a project,"},{"startTime":388.36,"endTime":390.92,"body":"you're not leading a program, you're leading people."},{"startTime":390.92,"endTime":394.08,"body":"So you have to find joy in leading people."},{"startTime":394.08,"endTime":399.0,"body":"And so some people, maybe that's not what they love"},{"startTime":399.0,"endTime":400.08,"body":"and that's okay,"},{"startTime":400.08,"endTime":402.92,"body":"because you're gonna be doing great things otherwise."},{"startTime":402.92,"endTime":406.4,"body":"But to really hone in, I think I use the leaders."},{"startTime":427.88,"endTime":431.56,"body":"So that's kind of one of the philosophies I have."},{"startTime":431.56,"endTime":435.28,"body":"And you can do that, whether you're leading,"},{"startTime":435.28,"endTime":439.24,"body":"a large organization or a small program or a small team."},{"startTime":439.24,"endTime":442.4,"body":"I tell people, when you're a project manager,"},{"startTime":442.4,"endTime":445.92,"body":"you have no authority and all the accountability."},{"startTime":445.92,"endTime":448.36,"body":"So it really goes down to your leadership skills."},{"startTime":448.36,"endTime":449.64,"body":"I think, how do you motivate people?"},{"startTime":449.64,"endTime":454.64,"body":"How do you find out how to make their work easier"},{"startTime":454.64,"endTime":456.36,"body":"and more fulfilling?"},{"startTime":456.36,"endTime":459.32,"body":"And so, just taking those small opportunities"},{"startTime":459.32,"endTime":462.4,"body":"that you have in your day-to-day work life"},{"startTime":462.4,"endTime":464.52,"body":"and making people think about,"},{"startTime":464.52,"endTime":466.08,"body":"how do I become a better leader?"},{"startTime":466.08,"endTime":467.92,"body":"'Cause you can do it in any situation,"},{"startTime":467.92,"endTime":469.96,"body":"whether it be at home or at work,"},{"startTime":469.96,"endTime":474.48,"body":"or it's a sports teams, whatever."},{"startTime":474.48,"endTime":477.36,"body":"There's always opportunities to learn about yourself,"},{"startTime":477.36,"endTime":479.6,"body":"which is, I think, fundamental to becoming a good leader."},{"startTime":479.6,"endTime":483.16,"body":"- And so, building on that idea,"},{"startTime":483.16,"endTime":485.4,"body":"building on that idea of,"},{"startTime":485.4,"endTime":487.92,"body":"you wanna be able to have a passion for people,"},{"startTime":487.92,"endTime":489.64,"body":"or at least caring about the people"},{"startTime":489.64,"endTime":491.92,"body":"and wanting to see them successful."},{"startTime":491.92,"endTime":495.24,"body":"We all know folks who have been asked"},{"startTime":495.24,"endTime":498.72,"body":"to be in a leadership role that may not have that passion,"},{"startTime":498.72,"endTime":500.64,"body":"or it's latent."},{"startTime":500.64,"endTime":503.2,"body":"You know, it might show up later, but at the moment,"},{"startTime":503.2,"endTime":507.08,"body":"having the attitude of, if I just didn't have the people,"},{"startTime":507.08,"endTime":509.2,"body":"this would be so much easier."},{"startTime":509.2,"endTime":511.76,"body":"You know, sometimes the reluctant leader approach."},{"startTime":511.76,"endTime":516.48,"body":"In your experience, Laurie, how do you help a leader"},{"startTime":516.48,"endTime":518.12,"body":"who is kind of in that moment,"},{"startTime":518.12,"endTime":521.2,"body":"especially as they're diving into their leadership journey,"},{"startTime":521.2,"endTime":523.4,"body":"kind of work through some of that"},{"startTime":523.4,"endTime":526.84,"body":"to be able to then gain an appreciation for people,"},{"startTime":526.84,"endTime":529.68,"body":"and sometimes the messiness that comes with it?"},{"startTime":529.68,"endTime":531.48,"body":"What are your reactions to that?"},{"startTime":531.48,"endTime":536.48,"body":"- Yeah, so I have a lot of phrases I use,"},{"startTime":536.48,"endTime":539.6,"body":"my kids tell me I've been using them their whole lives, right?"},{"startTime":539.6,"endTime":541.56,"body":"And one of the questions I always ask is,"},{"startTime":541.56,"endTime":543.16,"body":"how do you want it to end?"},{"startTime":543.16,"endTime":545.68,"body":"How do you want this thing, this project,"},{"startTime":545.68,"endTime":548.28,"body":"this situation to end?"},{"startTime":548.28,"endTime":551.44,"body":"And I think that somebody"},{"startTime":551.44,"endTime":553.36,"body":"that's maybe not passionate about the people,"},{"startTime":553.36,"endTime":555.12,"body":"they will immediately go to,"},{"startTime":555.12,"endTime":560.12,"body":"I want on time, on budget, technical success and all that."},{"startTime":560.12,"endTime":563.88,"body":"But like, well, how do you want your team to feel at the end?"},{"startTime":563.88,"endTime":565.76,"body":"And so it just gives you those opportunities"},{"startTime":565.76,"endTime":567.68,"body":"to have the discussions,"},{"startTime":567.68,"endTime":570.44,"body":"to make sure that while we have to deliver,"},{"startTime":570.44,"endTime":572.96,"body":"we have to deliver excellence in our technical"},{"startTime":572.96,"endTime":576.16,"body":"and technical products, right?"},{"startTime":576.16,"endTime":579.48,"body":"But you can't leave people in the dust."},{"startTime":579.48,"endTime":582.44,"body":"So when you ask, how do you want it to end?"},{"startTime":582.44,"endTime":583.88,"body":"And you can bring in that conversation,"},{"startTime":583.88,"endTime":587.0,"body":"well, how do you want your team to be at the end?"},{"startTime":587.0,"endTime":590.52,"body":"You want people to be able to put this on their resume."},{"startTime":590.52,"endTime":592.6,"body":"They can go do other things."},{"startTime":593.0,"endTime":595.96,"body":"How do you make them feel responsible"},{"startTime":595.96,"endTime":597.84,"body":"for developing their team"},{"startTime":597.84,"endTime":599.76,"body":"and as part of how they want it to end?"},{"startTime":599.76,"endTime":601.56,"body":"So those are just some tricks and tools"},{"startTime":601.56,"endTime":603.04,"body":"I've used over the years"},{"startTime":603.04,"endTime":605.76,"body":"when maybe somebody is not as passionate about it"},{"startTime":605.76,"endTime":610.12,"body":"or gets so excited about the technical merit of something"},{"startTime":610.12,"endTime":611.56,"body":"that they forget about the people."},{"startTime":611.56,"endTime":614.72,"body":"And if you don't have the people,"},{"startTime":614.72,"endTime":617.0,"body":"you'll never have technical excellence."},{"startTime":617.0,"endTime":618.44,"body":"So if you can just focus on them,"},{"startTime":618.44,"endTime":620.56,"body":"your chances of success are so much higher."},{"startTime":620.56,"endTime":622.56,"body":"So, again, how do you want it to end?"},{"startTime":622.56,"endTime":623.56,"body":"I want to be successful."},{"startTime":623.56,"endTime":625.2,"body":"Well, you can be really successful"},{"startTime":625.2,"endTime":626.64,"body":"if you can get your team motivated"},{"startTime":626.64,"endTime":631.0,"body":"and to feel part of the team and to have buy-in"},{"startTime":631.0,"endTime":634.6,"body":"and have them understand how they're part of the mission,"},{"startTime":634.6,"endTime":637.8,"body":"right, that you're supporting."},{"startTime":637.8,"endTime":639.76,"body":"- That concept of --"},{"startTime":639.76,"endTime":643.72,"body":"- Just as a quick follow-up, if you don't mind,"},{"startTime":643.72,"endTime":648.6,"body":"sometimes in organizations, there's a high reliability need."},{"startTime":648.6,"endTime":650.76,"body":"We need to be able to be really accurate."},{"startTime":650.76,"endTime":653.6,"body":"And my guess is you've experienced this a lot"},{"startTime":653.6,"endTime":654.56,"body":"working with astronauts"},{"startTime":654.56,"endTime":657.72,"body":"because they need to be able to make choices"},{"startTime":657.72,"endTime":659.12,"body":"that are not wrong."},{"startTime":659.12,"endTime":661.6,"body":"They need to make sure, especially in critical positions,"},{"startTime":661.6,"endTime":663.48,"body":"that they're accurate."},{"startTime":663.48,"endTime":667.08,"body":"How do you balance the need to be accurate"},{"startTime":667.08,"endTime":670.84,"body":"while still developing and caring about the people?"},{"startTime":670.84,"endTime":675.08,"body":"Because sometimes we might have a tendency as humans to say,"},{"startTime":675.08,"endTime":677.56,"body":"\"You know what? I'll just do it myself."},{"startTime":677.56,"endTime":680.6,"body":"I'm going to get this far faster and easier."},{"startTime":680.6,"endTime":683.56,"body":"However, it just -- you don't get the buy-in."},{"startTime":683.56,"endTime":685.24,"body":"You don't develop."},{"startTime":685.24,"endTime":687.08,"body":"And yet there are certain circumstances"},{"startTime":687.08,"endTime":689.6,"body":"you've got to make sure it is accurate."},{"startTime":689.6,"endTime":693.84,"body":"Laurie, how do you balance that need for accuracy"},{"startTime":693.84,"endTime":698.88,"body":"with the ability for buy-in and involvement of the people?"},{"startTime":698.88,"endTime":701.04,"body":"- Yeah, so first of all, we have to be perfect."},{"startTime":701.04,"endTime":703.56,"body":"We have to deliver perfection in human space flight."},{"startTime":703.56,"endTime":705.76,"body":"We don't -- you can't make a bad call."},{"startTime":705.76,"endTime":709.4,"body":"And so a lot of times, our people,"},{"startTime":709.4,"endTime":712.96,"body":"our processes, and our policies actually keep us bounded."},{"startTime":712.96,"endTime":716.84,"body":"So if you watch movies with the flight control room,"},{"startTime":716.84,"endTime":719.08,"body":"you'll see there's a flight director in charge."},{"startTime":719.08,"endTime":720.76,"body":"And that flight director -- I mean, there's command"},{"startTime":720.76,"endTime":725.84,"body":"and control of the human system as well as the vehicle systems."},{"startTime":725.84,"endTime":728.84,"body":"And so we put those principles in place."},{"startTime":728.84,"endTime":731.0,"body":"But it's not an \"or,\" right?"},{"startTime":731.0,"endTime":732.2,"body":"It's an \"and.\""},{"startTime":732.2,"endTime":736.08,"body":"So there are times, for example, on launch, you know,"},{"startTime":736.08,"endTime":738.04,"body":"decisions have to be made a certain way,"},{"startTime":738.04,"endTime":740.04,"body":"and we're not going to have discussion,"},{"startTime":740.04,"endTime":741.24,"body":"and it's not about why."},{"startTime":741.24,"endTime":744.76,"body":"But what we've done before that is we have made the team"},{"startTime":744.76,"endTime":745.88,"body":"understand the mission."},{"startTime":745.88,"endTime":749.96,"body":"So I think sometimes when it's time-critical,"},{"startTime":749.96,"endTime":751.56,"body":"you behave a specific way."},{"startTime":751.56,"endTime":756.6,"body":"When you have time, you make sure that you've this.\""},{"startTime":1780.92,"endTime":1783.8,"body":"And I was kind of becoming defensive"},{"startTime":1783.8,"endTime":1785.12,"body":"'cause I'm like, we did all this,"},{"startTime":1785.12,"endTime":1786.16,"body":"it's a crappy project."},{"startTime":1786.16,"endTime":1789.48,"body":"Just, I'm young and I wanna people,"},{"startTime":1839.44,"endTime":1841.92,"body":"I train people that were smarter than me,"},{"startTime":1841.92,"endTime":1845.08,"body":"older than me, had more credentials than me."},{"startTime":1845.08,"endTime":1851.36,"body":"These were American heroes that we're talking to."},{"startTime":1851.36,"endTime":1854.88,"body":"But also having the ability,"},{"startTime":1854.88,"endTime":1857.08,"body":"when you're in the right,"},{"startTime":1857.08,"endTime":1862.08,"body":"to be able to stand up to people that are above you."},{"startTime":1862.08,"endTime":1865.52,"body":"And maybe it's your boss's boss's boss"},{"startTime":1865.52,"endTime":1866.88,"body":"and you need to call them out"},{"startTime":1866.88,"endTime":1868.04,"body":"and figure out how to do that."},{"startTime":1868.04,"endTime":1870.16,"body":"And so I think when you're an instructor,"},{"startTime":1870.16,"endTime":1873.52,"body":"I remember I had a crew that was kind of in a conflict"},{"startTime":1873.52,"endTime":1876.24,"body":"and it was impacting the people in the cockpit."},{"startTime":1876.24,"endTime":1878.76,"body":"It was impacting our training team."},{"startTime":1878.76,"endTime":1882.12,"body":"And I remember it was in the motion simulator"},{"startTime":1882.12,"endTime":1885.92,"body":"and I was like, motion down, ramp up, meet on the deck."},{"startTime":1885.92,"endTime":1887.32,"body":"You know, CDR and PLT,"},{"startTime":1887.32,"endTime":1889.2,"body":"which was the commander and the pilot."},{"startTime":1889.2,"endTime":1892.24,"body":"And I basically got up there and I looked back"},{"startTime":1892.24,"endTime":1894.24,"body":"and I was like, I was really young."},{"startTime":1894.24,"endTime":1897.04,"body":"But I was like, look, this is not acceptable."},{"startTime":1897.04,"endTime":1899.28,"body":"This is not acceptable to me."},{"startTime":1899.28,"endTime":1902.76,"body":"And so you have to stop because you're impacting your crew,"},{"startTime":1902.76,"endTime":1905.48,"body":"you're gonna impact the mission and we don't need this."},{"startTime":1905.48,"endTime":1908.52,"body":"And both of them were like, you're
