As I wipe the tears and the PTSD froth is up."},{"startTime":218.499,"endTime":226.659,"body":"No, you know, building the businesses that I have, you know, to date, I didn't have a"},{"startTime":226.659,"endTime":233.019,"body":"roadmap and I had some great mentors along the way, but those mentors were not, you know,"},{"startTime":233.019,"endTime":238.579,"body":"operationally savvy. They were strategic, which is great. I needed it. And so trying to figure out how to deploy go-to-market strategy was not"},{"startTime":267.059,"endTime":272.979,"body":"for, still is not for the faint of heart in general, I believe. I just found it to be excruciatingly painful and difficult, and, you know, often"},{"startTime":281.099,"endTime":286.659,"body":"it felt insurmountable, and I couldn't find tools to do these things. And so you just—you"},{"startTime":286.659,"endTime":290.499,"body":"know, we've heard it—we all have heard this along the way, like it takes grit, and you've"},{"startTime":290.499,"endTime":301.139,"body":"got to keep on putting on grit every day. But over time, by God's grace, I architected"},{"startTime":301.139,"endTime":309.139,"body":"tools that empowered my businesses to actually do it, but not only do it sort of once or twice,"},{"startTime":309.139,"endTime":318.139,"body":"but do it in perpetuity repeatedly. And, and it was about five years ago that I thought,"},{"startTime":318.139,"endTime":326.139,"body":"oh my gosh, like, this is a secret weapon. This is a secret weapon."},{"startTime":326.139,"endTime":330.339,"body":"And I really think the world of business needs"},{"startTime":330.779,"endTime":338.819,"body":"something that they can lift and shift into their org, drop it in in a fast and easy way,"},{"startTime":338.819,"endTime":347.179,"body":"use tools that are pre-built for operational efficiency and sturdiness and durability,"},{"startTime":347.179,"endTime":350.339,"body":"and not have to slow down their business."},{"startTime":350.339,"endTime":356.419,"body":"Because I think that is the thing that most business owners, business leaders fret and"},{"startTime":356.419,"endTime":304.419,"body":"resist and that is having to stop and build. As a matter of fact, most can't even afford it. And so,"},{"startTime":364.739,"endTime":369.739,"body":"right, and so that led to this, you know, growing passion of mine, like,"},{"startTime":369.539,"endTime":376.579,"body":"maybe I could put a dent in this statistic of nine in 10 businesses fail within, you know,"},{"startTime":376.579,"endTime":381.379,"body":"over the course of 10 years, nine of them are dead, they're gone. What if I actually could"},{"startTime":381.379,"endTime":386.179,"body":"could put a dent in that and change the lives of business owners, business leaders, and their teams"},{"startTime":386.179,"endTime":397.179,"body":"that they depend on to succeed. And that's the why behind the passion, Daniel."},{"startTime":397.739,"endTime":403.259,"body":"Oh, it's great to hear that as you're sharing that, Garrett. Because"},{"startTime":442.119,"endTime":446.999,"body":"there you can't be completely lopsided on one or the other. No. But how do you"},{"startTime":446.999,"endTime":451.319,"body":"help find that that balance and what are those indications that all right we're"},{"startTime":451.319,"endTime":458.079,"body":"doing a good job here? Yeah, yeah great question Peter. You know a lot of times"},{"startTime":458.079,"endTime":464.079,"body":"businesses use kind of a North Star metric. A lot of times it's revenue and"},{"startTime":464.999,"endTime":471.999,"body":"And they go, if we're hitting our revenue targets, and our customer churn in general is in a sweet spot,"},{"startTime":471.999,"endTime":477.999,"body":"or we're happy with it, then we say we're doing good."},{"startTime":477.999,"endTime":427.999,"body":"In the meanwhile, and this is more probably personal to me, I think mileage will vary depending on what leader you talk to,"},{"startTime":487.999,"endTime":496.319,"body":"but in the meanwhile, underneath these North Star success metrics is a tremendous"},{"startTime":496.319,"endTime":508.159,"body":"amount of fret, pain, unhappiness, high employment churn, you know, bloated cogs, waste, you"},{"startTime":508.159,"endTime":517.159,"body":"know, inefficiency, all these sorts of things, which I would contend over time will degradate the business"},{"startTime":517.959,"endTime":523.959,"body":"and suddenly crash the plane or cause a lot of harm."},{"startTime":523.959,"endTime":531.959,"body":"And so, that would be my answer to your question there, Peter. Happy to dig more if you'd like."},{"startTime":531.959,"endTime":531.959,"body":"And so building on that, Garrett, what I'm hearing from you is you're describing inefficiencies, waste."},{"startTime":539.959,"endTime":485.959,"body":"And what is so bad about inefficiencies? I know that sounds like kind of a dumb question,"},{"startTime":545.959,"endTime":552.959,"body":"but what's so bad about them? Why do they emerge? How do you tackle them?"},{"startTime":552.959,"endTime":557.959,"body":"Because the inefficiencies as humans, I mean, it just happens all the time."},{"startTime":557.959,"endTime":560.959,"body":"And sometimes we're aware of them. Sometimes we aren't."},{"startTime":560.959,"endTime":565.719,"body":"And even if we are, sometimes we struggle knowing what the heck to do with these inefficient,"},{"startTime":565.719,"endTime":571.499,"body":"these things that just take a lot of time and effort and energy and resources."},{"startTime":571.499,"endTime":576.419,"body":"Talk to us in terms of how do inefficiencies get created?"},{"startTime":576.419,"endTime":580.519,"body":"What do you do with them to become more operationally successful?"},{"startTime":580.519,"endTime":581.839,"body":"Yeah."},{"startTime":581.839,"endTime":586.379,"body":"Again, fantastic question, Daniel."},{"startTime":586.379,"endTime":594.379,"body":"So I always, you know, I think it's good to define inefficiency, you know, which is essentially"},{"startTime":594.019,"endTime":603.179,"body":"resources, the businesses, the businesses are paying for, um, uh, which are misused,"},{"startTime":603.179,"endTime":606.099,"body":"poorly used or unused."},{"startTime":606.099,"endTime":612.259,"body":"And those inefficiencies ultimately equal waste and loss."},{"startTime":612.259,"endTime":614.959,"body":"You know, it's like what is wasted?"},{"startTime":614.959,"endTime":616.919,"body":"Money is wasted."},{"startTime":616.919,"endTime":620.639,"body":"Speed to deliver to customers is wasted."},{"startTime":620.639,"endTime":627.599,"body":"Imagine by the way, imagine if Amazon was inefficient in their logistic output, in their"},{"startTime":627.599,"endTime":630.399,"body":"logistic architecture."},{"startTime":630.399,"endTime":637.399,"body":"The very thing that allowed them to disrupt the marketplace in terms of delivering products"},{"startTime":637.679,"endTime":644.499,"body":"with Prime would not exist and they could not reign in that area."},{"startTime":644.499,"endTime":651.179,"body":"But instead, imagine if they were constantly emailing their customers and saying, \"Sorry,"},{"startTime":651.179,"endTime":654.379,"body":"we know you paid for Prime and we promised to deliver in two business days, but it's"},{"startTime":654.379,"endTime":659.379,"body":"going to be seven business days because we're struggling with inefficiency.\""},{"startTime":659.379,"endTime":661.059,"body":"They wouldn't win."},{"startTime":661.059,"endTime":669.579,"body":"And so, you know, these things like waste, speed to market, speed to innovate."},{"startTime":669.579,"endTime":677.499,"body":"You had mentioned, Daniel, this idea of a kryptonite to the business."},{"startTime":677.499,"endTime":679.339,"body":"It's the law of entropy."},{"startTime":679.339,"endTime":686.579,"body":"It bogs down the business and it prevents it from achieving its ultimate goals, whatever"},{"startTime":686.579,"endTime":695.139,"body":"that output is, to be competitive and serve their customers with excellence."},{"startTime":695.139,"endTime":700.939,"body":"That's how inefficiency cripples the business."},{"startTime":700.939,"endTime":707.939,"body":"You lose speed, you lose customers, you lose opportunity, you lose productivity, you lose scale."},{"startTime":707.739,"endTime":712.479,"body":"And then there's a whole host of negative cultural consequences that come with being"},{"startTime":712.479,"endTime":716.659,"body":"inefficient as well."},{"startTime":716.659,"endTime":722.379,"body":"And so, and as a side note, this is pretty common in business."},{"startTime":722.379,"endTime":729.239,"body":"Come back to the stat, you know, and most businesses failing."},{"startTime":729.239,"endTime":733.719,"body":"I would contend, although, you know, probably there's some product market fit stuff in there,"},{"startTime":733.719,"endTime":735.759,"body":"and you know, finances are a big thing."},{"startTime":735.759,"endTime":741.859,"body":"But I think in general, I would contend it's the kryptonite in the operation that really"},{"startTime":741.859,"endTime":744.839,"body":"harms them the most, you know."},{"startTime":744.839,"endTime":751.039,"body":"And if there's time today, I definitely have opinions about how to solve that and how to"},{"startTime":751.039,"endTime":755.039,"body":"solve that in perpetuity for sure, for sure."},{"startTime":755.039,"endTime":759.039,"body":"You mean, we don't want to just sit here worshiping a problem?"},{"startTime":759.839,"endTime":764.839,"body":"We want to actually give some advice on what to do?. I love that. You know, this is just"},{"startTime":764.839,"endTime":769.039,"body":"the pragmatic nature of what we want to do, because, man, we could sit here talking about"},{"startTime":769.999,"endTime":774.719,"body":"all of the reasons and how do you become aware of these inefficiencies and all that, but ultimately,"},{"startTime":774.719,"endTime":781.039,"body":"It's like, what can you do about it? And I like your simple definition of inefficiency."},{"startTime":781.039,"endTime":784.039,"body":"It's a misused resource. Yeah. Yeah."},{"startTime":784.759,"endTime":791.759,"body":"There's something wasted, something wasteful about what's being allocated. So with that,"},{"startTime":791.679,"endTime":797.279,"body":"I'm sure you've talked to hundreds and thousands of leaders who find themselves in this,"},{"startTime":798.079,"endTime":804.079,"body":"the sea of chaos, you know, all these inefficiencies around them. Where do you start?"},{"startTime":804.639,"endTime":809.639,"body":"Where do you begin to tackle this? Because man, it can feel daunting."},{"startTime":809.759,"endTime":816.799,"body":"It sure can. It is. It is daunting, by the way, you know, especially Daniel, Peter, you know,"},{"startTime":817.359,"endTime":824.359,"body":"most businesses don't have the luxury of this sort of venture capital runway, you know, they don't"},{"startTime":824.759,"endTime":832.899,"body":"they don't have the luxury to kind of have this, you know, monthly spend that's going"},{"startTime":832.899,"endTime":840.079,"body":"to, you know, this daunting monthly spend that they get to just allocate capital to"},{"startTime":840.079,"endTime":841.079,"body":"and make things work."},{"startTime":841.079,"endTime":844.279,"body":"And they have a three to five year run to figure it out."},{"startTime":844.279,"endTime":848.519,"body":"Most businesses all over the world, but you know, especially here in our backyard in the"},{"startTime":848.519,"endTime":856.859,"body":"United States, they're bootstrapped and they depend on their monthly revenue and whatever"},{"startTime":856.859,"endTime":863.519,"body":"bit of profit is left to reinvest back in the business. And so they're, they're pinching."},{"startTime":863.519,"endTime":870.739,"body":"This is the reality of most businesses. And so where do you start? I would say, I think"},{"startTime":870.739,"endTime":880.179,"body":"any business owner needs to start with actually valuing efficiency, valuing order. Because"},{"startTime":880.179,"endTime":884.379,"body":"if you actually don't value it, if it's not important to you, then you will never do anything"},{"startTime":884.379,"endTime":891.459,"body":"about it. I think that's the nature of values. And I think then the other thing is if you"},{"startTime":891.459,"endTime":897.459,"body":"do value it, and you want to do something about it, then you have to figure out"},{"startTime":897.459,"endTime":899.459,"body":"how to architect it."},{"startTime":900.099,"endTime":903.759,"body":"And for those businesses that ultimately come to the place"},{"startTime":903.759,"endTime":907.019,"body":"where they're like, \"Inefficiency and the waste and the loss"},{"startTime":907.019,"endTime":909.759,"body":"\"that comes with it is so painful to me."},{"startTime":909.759,"endTime":911.979,"body":"\"I want to do something.\""},{"startTime":911.979,"endTime":918.979,"body":"Then I have a couple, a few recommendations."},{"startTime":918.339,"endTime":923.019,"body":"One is when it comes to your management and leadership,"},{"startTime":923.019,"endTime":924.059,"body":"get them unified."},{"startTime":924.979,"endTime":929.979,"body":"Because they're the ones that you've paid to be at the helm"},{"startTime":930.059,"endTime":932.599,"body":"to ultimately drive toward your strategic goals"},{"startTime":932.599,"endTime":934.619,"body":"and get the outputs that you want."},{"startTime":934.619,"endTime":937.679,"body":"And they need to be unified cross-functionally"},{"startTime":937.679,"endTime":939.119,"body":"and vertically."},{"startTime":940.679,"endTime":944.799,"body":"I always recommend an acronym I like to use called PIE,"},{"startTime":944.799,"endTime":946.279,"body":"as simple as PIE."},{"startTime":946.279,"endTime":947.959,"body":"Your leaders need to be professional"},{"startTime":947.959,"endTime":951.479,"body":"and then define the criteria of what professional means."},{"startTime":951.479,"endTime":953.239,"body":"They need to have integrity."},{"startTime":953.239,"endTime":955.439,"body":"I mean, just good old fashioned,"},{"startTime":955.439,"endTime":960.439,"body":"do what they say they're gonna do, be honest, don't lie."},{"startTime":960.439,"endTime":962.439,"body":"These, those three things alone, man,"},{"startTime":962.439,"endTime":964.159,"body":"they work magic in a business"},{"startTime":964.159,"endTime":967.359,"body":"if all of the managing leaders are on board for that."},{"startTime":967.359,"endTime":970.959,"body":"And then the E stands for EQ or empathy,"},{"startTime":970.959,"endTime":976.959,"body":"where you have, you know, leaders that are aware, you know,"},{"startTime":976.119,"endTime":982.119,"body":"that they're working with humans and they are understanding,"},{"startTime":982.839,"endTime":984.439,"body":"but also holding people accountable."},{"startTime":984.439,"endTime":988.559,"body":"So I think unified leadership agreements are critical."},{"startTime":988.559,"endTime":989.379,"body":"I think the other thing--"},{"startTime":989.379,"endTime":991.279,"body":"- Jared, I'm gonna pause you a second,"},{"startTime":991.279,"endTime":995.279,"body":"just 'cause that little, what do you call it?"},{"startTime":995.279,"endTime":998.599,"body":"It's not an acronym, an acronism, whatever, the it."},{"startTime":1039.319,"endTime":1040.879,"body":"And they talk about like,"},{"startTime":1040.879,"endTime":1044.879,"body":"The only way you can hire for great is to define for great."},{"startTime":1044.839,"endTime":1049.159,"body":"And so, you know, business leaders, C-suite, founder, CEO,"},{"startTime":1049.159,"endTime":1052.079,"body":"you know, whoever's making these decisions at the top,"},{"startTime":1052.079,"endTime":1055.799,"body":"they have the luxury, but also the privilege,"},{"startTime":1055.799,"endTime":1058.799,"body":"and I would contend the responsibility,"},{"startTime":1058.679,"endTime":1060.499,"body":"to set the stage here, you know,"},{"startTime":1060.499,"endTime":1064.559,"body":"to say that when we form our leadership teams,"},{"startTime":1064.559,"endTime":1066.259,"body":"or our, you know, our leadership,"},{"startTime":1066.259,"endTime":1069.759,"body":"these are the requirements, period."},{"startTime":1069.759,"endTime":1077.279,"body":"This is the bar. I think that's a really special thing. But, you know, Peter, we were talking"},{"startTime":1077.279,"endTime":1023.279,"body":"earlier about how, you know, we just go fast because we're trying to build, and a lot of time"},{"startTime":1083.279,"endTime":1092.279,"body":"these foundational pillars get left out. And then, you know, as a result, chaos ensues. Yeah."},{"startTime":1093.039,"endTime":1101.039,"body":"What I'm loving is this idea of architecting order. And there is so much around this notion,"},{"startTime":1101.039,"endTime":1108.159,"body":"because it presumes that maybe order doesn't necessarily happen on its own. Because sometimes"},{"startTime":1108.159,"endTime":1115.199,"body":"leaders, either out of being overwhelmed or not knowing what to do or whatever, they just let"},{"startTime":1115.199,"endTime":1122.879,"body":"things continue. And I find when problems continue, they don't necessarily go away."},{"startTime":1123.759,"endTime":1129.759,"body":"They often become larger and/or create other dysfunctions that are then surprises, and it"},{"startTime":1129.759,"endTime":1136.479,"body":"becomes more complicated and more complex, and it's challenging. And this notion of architecting"},{"startTime":1136.479,"endTime":1147.199,"body":"order as a proactive, as a intentional activity, is a fascinating concept. So let's take this one more step."},{"startTime":1422.999,"endTime":1426.999,"body":"I'm sure you've, with all the different companies you've consulted with,"},{"startTime":1426.999,"endTime":1431.999,"body":"and I'm thinking so many clients that Peter and I have worked with as well,"},{"startTime":1431.999,"endTime":1431.999,"body":"You can get sometimes a leader who is really good on the visionary stuff, can see the big picture,"},{"startTime":1439.999,"endTime":1386.999,"body":"is excited, they can inspire others. They're not necessarily the same person"},{"startTime":1446.999,"endTime":1452.999,"body":"who is then able to make a project plan. And they don't have the patience,"},{"startTime":1452.999,"endTime":1455.999,"body":"they don't have the energy, they don't have the passion,"},{"startTime":1455.999,"endTime":1461.999,"body":"and they big picture and thus sometimes they can do what you just said is one of the biggest myths,"},{"startTime":1461.999,"endTime":1466.859,"body":"\"Hire great people and say, just go do whatever the heck you need to do and"},{"startTime":1466.859,"endTime":1470.419,"body":"tell me and I'll just keep thinking great ideas.\""},{"startTime":1470.419,"endTime":1479.819,"body":"And that is somehow this mythos, this ideal that we have that, oh yeah, that works."},{"startTime":1479.819,"endTime":1489.599,"body":"What do you say to that visionary strategy ideas person to help them recognize operational"},{"startTime":1489.598,"endTime":1495.598,"body":"success is more than simply just hiring good people and sitting back and saying, \"Yep, did my job.\""},{"startTime":1495.518,"endTime":1442.518,"body":"How do you balance that? Oh my gosh. Yeah. It's a big question."},{"startTime":1502.398,"endTime":1507.598,"body":"I would go, you know where I would start, Daniel? I think I would go back to that thing"},{"startTime":1507.598,"endTime":1519.278,"body":"we talked about earlier in the podcast is, do you recognize that this is a problem?
