what title you have,"},{"startTime":170.48,"endTime":174.96,"body":"there is that misperception of any feedback that you're going to get is pretty flawed."},{"startTime":174.96,"endTime":178.16,"body":"Because who's going to tell the CEO, you take too long to get to the point?"},{"startTime":178.16,"endTime":179.92,"body":"You're really us, we're going to be able to go back if we choose to, right?"},{"startTime":209.82,"endTime":216.02,"body":"Go back and take a look so that we can make a connection of how we feel versus what reality there are only two."},{"startTime":222.02,"endTime":227.22,"body":"Point number three is a lot of times a leader will say, well, I've been doing this work influential."},{"startTime":238.64,"endTime":243.96,"body":"What guarantees you're influential is truly when you've got the courage to be vulnerable on a"},{"startTime":243.96,"endTime":249.1,"body":"regular basis and really take a close look through the eyes and ears of your listeners."},{"startTime":249.6,"endTime":255.24,"body":"That was a really helpful insight, Stacey, as we start to dissect and kind of break apart"},{"startTime":255.24,"endTime":258.82,"body":"this concept of influence and really what gets in the way."},{"startTime":258.82,"endTime":261.7,"body":"And it sounds like in many ways, it's our own ego."},{"startTime":261.7,"endTime":269.38,"body":"It's our own fear of avoiding the discomfort, our kind of fixed versus a growth mindset,"},{"startTime":269.38,"endTime":270.14,"body":"you could even say."},{"startTime":271.84,"endTime":272.24,"body":"Totally."},{"startTime":272.24,"endTime":277.38,"body":"You know, and I think too, so many times, whether I'm mentoring a leader or maybe my"},{"startTime":277.38,"endTime":282.98,"body":"team, they're in one of their workshops, leaders will pull us to the side and say, \"why hasn't anyone"},{"startTime":282.98,"endTime":283.82,"body":"told me this?\""},{"startTime":283.82,"endTime":285.68,"body":"I had a leader not too long ago."},{"startTime":285.68,"endTime":289.92,"body":"She's been in a very high profile position for 10 years."},{"startTime":289.92,"endTime":293.66,"body":"And after one of our workshops, I approached her to just get her feedback."},{"startTime":293.66,"endTime":295.74,"body":"And she said, first, I'm so embarrassed."},{"startTime":295.74,"endTime":297.86,"body":"I've been a leader for 10 years."},{"startTime":297.86,"endTime":300.44,"body":"I should know how to do this."},{"startTime":300.84,"endTime":305.4,"body":"And I'm like, well, should versus what reality states are two different things."},{"startTime":305.4,"endTime":311.38,"body":"Just because you have a title or your years of experience, none of that has ever proven"},{"startTime":311.38,"endTime":313.52,"body":"to suddenly be influential."},{"startTime":313.52,"endTime":318.84,"body":"And Peter, that's really the part where we love to unpack it for a leader to say,"},{"startTime":318.84,"endTime":320.98,"body":"\"I'm not saying you're not influential."},{"startTime":320.98,"endTime":327.42,"body":"I'm saying as a leader or whomever you might be, what role you have, there's always opportunity"},{"startTime":327.42,"endTime":330.4,"body":"to improve how we communicate.\""},{"startTime":330.4,"endTime":332.1,"body":"And that's two categories, right?"},{"startTime":332.1,"endTime":335.28,"body":"How we communicate verbally and how we communicate non-verbally."},{"startTime":335.28,"endTime":337.58,"body":"We just can't stop learning."},{"startTime":337.58,"endTime":340.94,"body":"And I don't know why in the corporate world we get to"},{"startTime":340.94,"endTime":343.94,"body":"that point and it's just this mindset of,"},{"startTime":343.94,"endTime":345.06,"body":"all right, I'm good. I know everything."},{"startTime":345.06,"endTime":346.92,"body":"I'm good to go."},{"startTime":346.98,"endTime":348.9,"body":"Yeah."},{"startTime":348.9,"endTime":354.98,"body":"And you know, so building on that, it's fascinating to me that when somebody gets promoted and they"},{"startTime":354.98,"endTime":363.34,"body":"get a title, they either feel like they should now know everything or more often, everybody"},{"startTime":363.34,"endTime":367.82,"body":"else automatically expects you to know everything."},{"startTime":367.82,"endTime":376.0,"body":"And yet you are still the same schmuck, the same person as you were yesterday."},{"startTime":376.0,"endTime":383.96,"body":"It's not like you just were given from heaven or whatever else, this immediate enlightenment."},{"startTime":383.34,"endTime":384.86,"body":"Yeah."},{"startTime":384.86,"endTime":392.18,"body":"And so managing these expectations of yourself and then how others reinforce, giving a little"},{"startTime":392.18,"endTime":396.58,"body":"bit of grace, a little patience, because we're all learning."},{"startTime":396.58,"endTime":398.88,"body":"And we should be learning."},{"startTime":398.88,"endTime":399.8,"body":"Yeah, please."},{"startTime":399.8,"endTime":400.14,"body":"Yeah."},{"startTime":400.14,"endTime":401.14,"body":"How do you respond to misperception."},{"startTime":404.08,"endTime":406.6,"body":"So maybe part of it is this title."},{"startTime":406.6,"endTime":408.14,"body":"There's a misperception with titles."},{"startTime":408.34,"endTime":412.9,"body":"Playing off what you just said, Daniel, is, well, I should know this, right?"},{"startTime":412.9,"endTime":416.94,"body":"I've learned this all my life versus so many of our clients."},{"startTime":416.94,"endTime":419.28,"body":"If I'm mentoring someone, they're very much in the executive often on his phone."},{"startTime":492.46,"endTime":497.74,"body":"And finally, at one point he says, I'm thinking and reflecting about my executive team."},{"startTime":497.88,"endTime":503.64,"body":"How when we've got a challenge around our development, we'll put together a whole PowerPoint deck."},{"startTime":503.64,"endTime":507.36,"body":"And then we'll present it to try to sell it, to get a budget around."},{"startTime":507.36,"endTime":510.24,"body":"He's like, when we were, when I was a professional rugby player,"},{"startTime":510.36,"endTime":514.24,"body":"when we knew we had to develop, we never put a PowerPoint slide together."},{"startTime":514.24,"endTime":520.18,"body":"We got out on the field and we practiced it over and over."},{"startTime":520.42,"endTime":525.2,"body":"And I know it's a little different, rugby versus corporate world."},{"startTime":525.2,"endTime":529.72,"body":"But when you pull and look at the mechanics, it really is the same thing."},{"startTime":529.72,"endTime":534.82,"body":"If you want to develop, you've got to practice and continue to do the work."},{"startTime":534.82,"endTime":541.7,"body":"It's somewhat analogous, Stacey, to this notion that, oh, I need to build this skill."},{"startTime":541.7,"endTime":546.36,"body":"I'm going to just read a book about it and then automatically I'm perfect at it."},{"startTime":546.36,"endTime":549.96,"body":"Or I'm going to go attend a webinar or a workshop."},{"startTime":549.74,"endTime":554.2,"body":"And it's this notion that somehow if we get the information in our brain,"},{"startTime":554.74,"endTime":558.2,"body":"then that automatically translates into changing behavior and habits."},{"startTime":558.2,"endTime":562.1,"body":"Which we know fundamentally doesn't happen."},{"startTime":562.48,"endTime":567.62,"body":"You both get it because of the expertise that you have and the companies that you run."},{"startTime":567.62,"endTime":573.92,"body":"When I talk about influence and how to communicate with influence, both verbally and non-verbally,"},{"startTime":573.62,"endTime":578.92,"body":"we elevate it to this level of, if you're truly going to have influence, it's Monday to Monday."},{"startTime":578.92,"endTime":580.92,"body":"Which means how you show up."},{"startTime":580.92,"endTime":582.7,"body":"It needs to be consistent."},{"startTime":582.84,"endTime":590.06,"body":"But in order to that like and aptly, you have to practice over and over in order to improve."},{"startTime":590.2,"endTime":594.24,"body":"And the great news when it comes to building your influence is every conversation"},{"startTime":594.2,"endTime":598.24,"body":"you have is really an opportunity for you to practice something."},{"startTime":598.24,"endTime":600.0,"body":"Is it how you deliver?"},{"startTime":600.0,"endTime":603.42,"body":"Is it how you connect or don't connect with people?"},{"startTime":603.42,"endTime":604.76,"body":"Is it your messaging?"},{"startTime":605.4,"endTime":611.38,"body":"I think that's really the power of a lot of the work that I do is it's not, all right, you have to carve out"},{"startTime":611.4,"endTime":614.38,"body":"an hour on Tuesday every week and sit down here and practice."},{"startTime":614.38,"endTime":616.46,"body":"It's not reality."},{"startTime":616.82,"endTime":619.34,"body":"But when we can really help leaders get into the mindset of you're already busy."},{"startTime":619.34,"endTime":621.14,"body":"They have no room on their schedule."},{"startTime":621.14,"endTime":628.66,"body":"It's getting them in the mindset of take advantage of your multitude of meetings in a day."},{"startTime":628.82,"endTime":635.96,"body":"And every interaction, that's an opportunity where you can be thinking about how can you develop these day."},{"startTime":657.44,"endTime":658.48,"body":"You know, years ago, months ago, whatever."},{"startTime":658.48,"endTime":662.44,"body":"And what has it shifted to to today?"},{"startTime":662.44,"endTime":664.44,"body":"You know, give us a contrast."},{"startTime":664.44,"endTime":667.36,"body":"What are the things that maybe we thought were needed?"},{"startTime":667.36,"endTime":671.78,"body":"And what is it now needed to be really influential today?"},{"startTime":671.78,"endTime":674.86,"body":"Oh, I'm nodding my head because I love environment."},{"startTime":699.08,"endTime":705.14,"body":"And now when you're trying to influence someone who's in their home, you have no idea what noise is going on there."},{"startTime":705.7,"endTime":708.22,"body":"And because of all this noise, it's interesting."},{"startTime":708.22,"endTime":711.12,"body":"We're more connected than we've ever been before."},{"startTime":711.12,"endTime":717.62,"body":"Yet somehow we're more disconnected than ever before."},{"startTime":717.48,"endTime":720.14,"body":"And this whole idea of elevate it is it's more critical than ever before."},{"startTime":729.64,"endTime":735.92,"body":"Because you have leaders who are seeing employees in the office and leaders that have never,"},{"startTime":735.64,"endTime":738.92,"body":"whoa, never see their employees or they see some of them."},{"startTime":738.12,"endTime":740.04,"body":"That's a whole other challenge."},{"startTime":740.04,"endTime":749.4,"body":"This idea of showing up on virtual as if it's just this casual and your brand has nothing to do with it."},{"startTime":749.4,"endTime":750.34,"body":"I'll give you an example."},{"startTime":750.34,"endTime":752.18,"body":"Yesterday, because it's fresh in my mind."},{"startTime":752.18,"endTime":756.62,"body":"Yesterday, we met with several leaders of a very large company."},{"startTime":756.74,"endTime":762.88,"body":"I can't share the name, but we were doing a recap of the training we do with their team."},{"startTime":762.88,"endTime":766.36,"body":"And one of their leaders, you'll appreciate this, shows up."},{"startTime":766.36,"endTime":767.88,"body":"The camera's set up."},{"startTime":767.88,"endTime":769.02,"body":"I can look up her nose the entire time."},{"startTime":769.02,"endTime":773.76,"body":"She is chewing her gum so hard."},{"startTime":773.26,"endTime":776.24,"body":"And then I know she must have a monitor over here."},{"startTime":776.24,"endTime":777.86,"body":"And she's catching up on email the whole time."},{"startTime":777.86,"endTime":781.6,"body":"And I thought, well, at this point, I love this to some degree."},{"startTime":781.6,"endTime":783.32,"body":"Because now, for me, it's research, right?"},{"startTime":783.32,"endTime":784.6,"body":"And I'm going to have a little fun with it."},{"startTime":784.6,"endTime":788.14,"body":"So I asked her, because she's not paying attention this entire time."},{"startTime":788.14,"endTime":792.9,"body":"And I said to her, I go, \"so what have you heard from your team?"},{"startTime":792.9,"endTime":795.58,"body":"What feedback did they give based on the work that we've done?\""},{"startTime":795.58,"endTime":797.44,"body":"And she says, \"well, I haven't talked to them yet."},{"startTime":797.44,"endTime":799.76,"body":"But if you want me to, I will.\""},{"startTime":799.38,"endTime":805.46,"body":"And I'm like, well, I feel sometimes like the virtual world"},{"startTime":805.38,"endTime":811.46,"body":"has really created, trying to find a nice word, but I feel lazy."},{"startTime":811.46,"endTime":818.28,"body":"It's just this laziness that we've put into, and we've lost how to connect."},{"startTime":818.28,"endTime":819.4,"body":"We've lost how to engage."},{"startTime":819.4,"endTime":823.94,"body":"We've lost how to communicate with empathy."},{"startTime":824.94,"endTime":828.58,"body":"And call it, you know, common sense skills."},{"startTime":828.8,"endTime":833.36,"body":"But it also has proved that what is common sense is not common practice."},{"startTime":833.36,"endTime":836.62,"body":"You know you should get your teeth cleaned, what, every six months?"},{"startTime":836.62,"endTime":837.82,"body":"How many people do it?"},{"startTime":837.82,"endTime":839.14,"body":"They do it when they've got a toothache."},{"startTime":839.14,"endTime":841.72,"body":"And now they go to the doctor."},{"startTime":841.72,"endTime":842.7,"body":"And sometimes we'll get calls from clients."},{"startTime":843.7,"endTime":844.26,"body":"I have a big presentation next week."},{"startTime":844.26,"endTime":846.72,"body":"I have a big sales pitch next week."},{"startTime":846.72,"endTime":847.0,"body":"Can you coach me?"},{"startTime":847.0,"endTime":849.1,"body":"And my first response is no."},{"startTime":849.1,"endTime":850.52,"body":"Not now."},{"startTime":850.52,"endTime":852.08,"body":"Like, it's too late."},{"startTime":852.54,"endTime":856.96,"body":"I'll coach you for the next one, but there has to be a timeframe that's long and far enough out."},{"startTime":856.96,"endTime":863.36,"body":"So it's more needed than ever before that this idea of being consistent,"},{"startTime":863.96,"endTime":869.36,"body":"of how you show up in all these platforms, that's really what's going to drive influence Monday to Monday."},{"startTime":869.36,"endTime":876.28,"body":"Versus I've got influence during the sales pitch, but when they see me in person, I'm a little bit different than I am here."},{"startTime":877.28,"endTime":885.32,"body":"So many great thoughts to help us think more about how we show up, you know, how people experience us."},{"startTime":885.32,"endTime":889.36,"body":"To go back to a phrase that you used earlier, I think that really helps"},{"startTime":889.32,"endTime":893.36,"body":"encapsulate so much of what we're talking about in terms of influence."},{"startTime":893.52,"endTime":897.72,"body":"Then as you're elaborating on the reality of the a VP who reports, you know, has her on the team,"},{"startTime":1292.02,"endTime":1301.98,"body":"what would that VP say to her to invite learning, whether it's that specific experience or not?"},{"startTime":1301.98,"endTime":1306.3,"body":"What are ways to help a leader engage in that conversation?"},{"startTime":1306.3,"endTime":1311.02,"body":"Because those could be sensitive, challenging topics for all of the reasons we've talked about."},{"startTime":1311.42,"endTime":1315.02,"body":"It's ego challenging, you know, but yet we all will show up invited."},{"startTime":1348.56,"endTime":1352.6,"body":"I don't just jump at my team member and say, hey, Dan, I'm going to give you some feedback here."},{"startTime":1352.04,"endTime":1353.44,"body":"Right."},{"startTime":1353.44,"endTime":1356.76,"body":"But we on my team have a very clear understanding that, hey, if we're talking about"},{"startTime":1356.44,"endTime":1360.76,"body":"people getting each other feedback, we have to do it internally."},{"startTime":1360.76,"endTime":1367.2,"body":"If it's a situation where they are not that strong of a relationship yet or for whatever reason,"},{"startTime":1367.76,"endTime":1371.2,"body":"what I've done before is I might ask you, Daniel, well, here's what I'm working on."},{"startTime":1371.2,"endTime":1374.42,"body":"When I'm in board meetings, will you just watch to make sure I don't fidget?"},{"startTime":1374.42,"endTime":1375.48,"body":"I tend to fidget a lot."},{"startTime":1375.48,"endTime":1377.0,"body":"Will you just kind of watch for that?"},{"startTime":1377.0,"endTime":1379.62,"body":"Now, most likely you're going to agree to help me out."},{"startTime":1379.72,"endTime":1383.36,"body":"When you agree to help me out, you just opened up the gate."},{"startTime":1383.36,"endTime":1389.72,"body":"And I may come back and say, are you OK if I would you also be open to feedback?"},{"startTime":1389.72,"endTime":1394.54,"body":"So this is where every word matters and the messaging is absolutely critical."},{"startTime":1394.54,"endTime":1397.24,"body":"So that would be baseline, right?"},{"startTime":1397.72,"endTime":1402.18,"body":"Now, here's something that a leader that I had coached years ago, I thought was brilliant."},{"startTime":1402.18,"endTime":1407.7,"body":"He'd gone through our workshop and he went back to his team and they were meeting once a week and he said,"},{"startTime":1407.18,"endTime":1410.7,"body":"\"I'll be video recording myself.\""},{"startTime":1410.7,"endTime":1411.62,"body":"And he just did it on his phone."},{"startTime":1411.62,"endTime":1413.28,"body":"I'll be recording myself in the meeting."},{"startTime":1413.28,"endTime":1418.22,"body":"I'm doing that because I want to make sure as a leader, I am the best possible leader that can show up for you."},{"startTime":1418.22,"endTime":1420.4,"body":"So he did that for a couple of meetings."},{"startTime":1420.4,"endTime":1424.66,"body":"Suddenly, his team starts to see the benefit in keep watching yourself on playback."},{"startTime":1430.16,"endTime":1434.3,"body":"Well, lo and behold, he was then able to turn that recording on his just record Zoom."},{"startTime":1439.9,"endTime":1444.7,"body":"And his team members are asked to watch the playback before their next meeting."},{"startTime":1444.7,"endTime":1448.22,"body":"And once in a while as a team, they give each other feedback as part of their meeting."},{"startTime":1448.22,"endTime":1455.06,"body":"I think, I think, Daniel, there might be some misperception of what feedback is."},{"startTime":1455.06,"endTime":1458.88,"body":"And for so many years, feedback was you're doing something wrong."},{"startTime":1458.96,"endTime":1459.84,"body":"I need to correct you."},{"startTime":1459.84,"endTime":1464.84,"body":"And when we do feedback, I never, you know, I always say to someone, you know, take have a coach or you're going through a training session, whatever"},{"startTime":1471.18,"endTime":1474.88,"body":"it might be, take advantage of that because they want to invest in you to make who's self-aware Monday to"},{"startTime":1516.8,"endTime":1522.96,"body":"Monday and who's willing to get uncomfortable because they know that what doesn't think about how they experience you, how that message is received, that's"},{"startTime":1590.5,"endTime":1595.76,"body":"what really helped click for them to get past some of the arguments over,
