has gotten"},{"startTime":200.125,"endTime":203.333,"body":"a lot of negative publicity, right?"},{"startTime":203.333,"endTime":206.166,"body":"With the everything that's going on in the economy"},{"startTime":206.166,"endTime":208.541,"body":"has been pretty much blamed on AI."},{"startTime":208.541,"endTime":211.708,"body":"There's so many different nuances associated with that."},{"startTime":212.041,"endTime":214.291,"body":"But the realities are is that"},{"startTime":214.291,"endTime":218.708,"body":"it wasn't necessarily AI, for instance, that were driving all of the layoffs,"},{"startTime":218.708,"endTime":222.666,"body":"it was just shareholders and those sort of,"},{"startTime":222.666,"endTime":226.291,"body":"you know, effects taking place that had nothing to do with AI,"},{"startTime":226.291,"endTime":227.916,"body":"but you got to blame somebody, right?"},{"startTime":227.916,"endTime":229.541,"body":"And so"},{"startTime":229.541,"endTime":231.041,"body":"AI's the easiest target."},{"startTime":231.291,"endTime":234.958,"body":"Now, what we're seeing, though, is that one,"},{"startTime":234.958,"endTime":237.541,"body":"private equity money is drying up in investments,"},{"startTime":237.541,"endTime":242.708,"body":"so it's expensive to borrow money, so you're not seeing a lot of AI startups,"},{"startTime":242.708,"endTime":244.25,"body":"uh, for instance,"},{"startTime":244.25,"endTime":247.5,"body":"but we're also seeing a shift in the technology."},{"startTime":247.958,"endTime":252.25,"body":"About every two weeks, there's a new large language model that's released."},{"startTime":252.25,"endTime":255.041,"body":"There's something new that shakes the foundation of"},{"startTime":255.041,"endTime":257.5,"body":"what we understand what AI can do,"},{"startTime":257.5,"endTime":263.375,"body":"and that is driving an awful lot of the, you know, activities that are taking place."},{"startTime":263.375,"endTime":264.458,"body":"And so"},{"startTime":264.458,"endTime":268.125,"body":"it's not an easy position for business owners"},{"startTime":268.125,"endTime":272.833,"body":"to be in right now and executives, because if they tie themselves to"},{"startTime":272.833,"endTime":276.375,"body":"one large language model developer,"},{"startTime":276.375,"endTime":278.916,"body":"the next day they could be behind already."},{"startTime":278.916,"endTime":281.25,"body":"And so there's a lot of, you know,"},{"startTime":281.25,"endTime":283.791,"body":"folks are hesitant to make the investment,"},{"startTime":283.791,"endTime":285.666,"body":"but they know they have to make the investment."},{"startTime":285.666,"endTime":289.416,"body":"And so there's just a lot of those tough decisions that have to be made."},{"startTime":290.625,"endTime":294.375,"body":"That's helpful context, Allen, is you're sharing that and"},{"startTime":294.375,"endTime":299.083,"body":"let's actually kind of broaden that aperture a little bit wider"},{"startTime":299.083,"endTime":302.041,"body":"as I know as Daniel was reading your your bio saying,"},{"startTime":302.041,"endTime":305.166,"body":"you've been building AI for 20 plus years."},{"startTime":305.833,"endTime":307.791,"body":"I think there are a lot of folks who have are like,"},{"startTime":307.791,"endTime":309.208,"body":"“wait a minute, it's been around that long?”"},{"startTime":309.625,"endTime":311.375,"body":"You know, it's like kind of having that question."},{"startTime":311.375,"endTime":316.166,"body":"So as you look at the evolution of AI over the last few decades"},{"startTime":316.166,"endTime":319.625,"body":"and what, what was, are kind of examples of"},{"startTime":319.625,"endTime":322.625,"body":"some of the beginnings of AI that you would consider that?"},{"startTime":323.0,"endTime":326.166,"body":"And then what have been some of those major leaps"},{"startTime":326.166,"endTime":330.583,"body":"over the past several years and where do you anticipate it heading"},{"startTime":330.583,"endTime":333.75,"body":"in the coming, you know, next couple years?"},{"startTime":333.75,"endTime":336.666,"body":"So just kind of a brief little timeline history of AI."},{"startTime":337.25,"endTime":342.166,"body":"Yeah, so when I first started, it was around developing genetic algorithms."},{"startTime":343.041,"endTime":345.583,"body":"And they're really just optimization techniques."},{"startTime":345.958,"endTime":348.25,"body":"You're trying to figure out, you know,"},{"startTime":348.25,"endTime":353.5,"body":"what the optimum, you know, coefficient might be of an equation or something like that."},{"startTime":353.5,"endTime":356.916,"body":"And that really, you know, drove, you know, some"},{"startTime":356.916,"endTime":362.208,"body":"some developments that they had, and then we went into the Neural Net Age and"},{"startTime":362.208,"endTime":365.625,"body":"uh, you know, that sort of took off on its own."},{"startTime":365.625,"endTime":369.75,"body":"But the underlying issue that we always had"},{"startTime":369.75,"endTime":372.125,"body":"was that we didn't have enough compute power."},{"startTime":373.083,"endTime":376.208,"body":"And, you know, we were trying to— these, these things,"},{"startTime":376.208,"endTime":380.0,"body":"one, they take a lot of data to train"},{"startTime":380.0,"endTime":384.5,"body":"as, you know, like the next model I'm hearing is going to cost anywhere from"},{"startTime":384.5,"endTime":387.5,"body":"150 to 250 million dollars to train."},{"startTime":388.25,"endTime":392.666,"body":"They didn't have enough, you know, compute power in the machines that we had"},{"startTime":392.666,"endTime":395.708,"body":"in order to be able to crunch the numbers so that it would take,"},{"startTime":395.708,"endTime":400.125,"body":"you know, less than, oh, geez, we're talking months"},{"startTime":400.125,"endTime":401.791,"body":"to run some of these things."},{"startTime":401.791,"endTime":403.916,"body":"And these were the smaller ones back in the day."},{"startTime":403.916,"endTime":406.958,"body":"I remember I had a DEC Alpha, uh, you know,"},{"startTime":406.958,"endTime":409.125,"body":"computer that was like state of the art"},{"startTime":409.125,"endTime":412.416,"body":"and it had less RAM than my cell phone does, right?"},{"startTime":412.416,"endTime":416.791,"body":"And so, you know, now, you know, with GPUs"},{"startTime":416.791,"endTime":422.625,"body":"and TPUs and now some basics around quantum annealing and those kind of things,"},{"startTime":422.625,"endTime":425.875,"body":"we have seen, you know, Moore's Law at the"},{"startTime":425.875,"endTime":429.208,"body":"the leaps and bounds of the compute power have allowed us"},{"startTime":429.208,"endTime":432.833,"body":"to finally be able to do some of the compute that we need to"},{"startTime":432.833,"endTime":435.333,"body":"and get it in our lifetime."},{"startTime":435.333,"endTime":435.958,"body":"—Wow."},{"startTime":436.666,"endTime":438.166,"body":"So many aspects."},{"startTime":438.166,"endTime":443.333,"body":"And you're making me reflect on an experience I just had last week."},{"startTime":443.333,"endTime":446.916,"body":"I was speaking at a leadership summit for a large bank."},{"startTime":446.916,"endTime":451.041,"body":"And there were 40 of the leaders there and the CEO came up."},{"startTime":451.041,"endTime":453.208,"body":"There was a Q\u0026A section of the meeting."},{"startTime":453.666,"endTime":456.416,"body":"And one of the leaders asked the CEO,"},{"startTime":456.416,"endTime":459.041,"body":"what is our AI policy?"},{"startTime":459.041,"endTime":460.916,"body":"What is our AI approach?"},{"startTime":461.666,"endTime":464.25,"body":"And it was interesting how the CEO responded."},{"startTime":464.25,"endTime":467.875,"body":"He was pretty quick in his response by saying,"},{"startTime":467.875,"endTime":470.166,"body":"“We don't have one. We don't need one.”"},{"startTime":470.541,"endTime":474.5,"body":"“What we're gonna be doing is simply leveraging the AI tools”"},{"startTime":474.5,"endTime":480.083,"body":"“that are gonna come with each of the system providers that we will have.”"},{"startTime":480.083,"endTime":483.333,"body":"So really in some ways looking to all of the vendors"},{"startTime":483.333,"endTime":487.458,"body":"of all of the processes and systems that the bank utilizes"},{"startTime":487.458,"endTime":490.291,"body":"for them to utilize AI to make those"},{"startTime":490.291,"endTime":493.916,"body":"systems and processes more efficient in various ways."},{"startTime":494.541,"endTime":496.833,"body":"It was an interesting way of approaching it."},{"startTime":497.208,"endTime":500.375,"body":"I share that as just one example, Allen,"},{"startTime":500.375,"endTime":504.5,"body":"as you're hearing that and other business think right now, a lot of business leaders are like,"},{"startTime":621.708,"endTime":625.541,"body":"“Oh, it's both optimistic, exciting and business leaders should not"},{"startTime":633.791,"endTime":637.75,"body":"think of AI going into and helping and supporting if you don't mind?"},{"startTime":638.5,"endTime":642.458,"body":"Well, you know, I think it can help in so many different places."},{"startTime":642.916,"endTime":644.458,"body":"But what"},{"startTime":644.458,"endTime":647.291,"body":"is the easiest thing to think about is that AI"},{"startTime":647.291,"endTime":652.083,"body":"should not do anything by itself and be left alone for long periods of time."},{"startTime":652.583,"endTime":654.166,"body":"[laughing]"},{"startTime":654.166,"endTime":657.333,"body":"Because you've got to, you know, when we talk about this,"},{"startTime":657.333,"endTime":660.291,"body":"you've got to have somebody watching"},{"startTime":660.291,"endTime":664.291,"body":"what it's doing, checking in on it, making sure it's behaving,"},{"startTime":664.291,"endTime":668.125,"body":"because you never know these models are still very temperamental."},{"startTime":668.125,"endTime":672.375,"body":"And you've got to put really good boundaries around it"},{"startTime":672.375,"endTime":674.791,"body":"and tell it exactly what it should not be doing,"},{"startTime":674.791,"endTime":677.125,"body":"what systems it should not be looking at,"},{"startTime":677.125,"endTime":680.916,"body":"what, uh, you know, customers that should never talk to,"},{"startTime":680.916,"endTime":684.625,"body":"uh, you know, software that it should never be allowed to write on its own."},{"startTime":684.625,"endTime":687.583,"body":"Things like that you have to really think about."},{"startTime":687.583,"endTime":691.083,"body":"And, you know, there's a lot of debate going on right now on"},{"startTime":691.083,"endTime":694.166,"body":"these models and how they're coming up with some of their"},{"startTime":694.166,"endTime":697.416,"body":"their uh thought processes and, you know, it's called chain of thought."},{"startTime":697.416,"endTime":698.208,"body":"And,"},{"startTime":698.208,"endTime":699.25,"body":"you know, some people are saying,"},{"startTime":699.25,"endTime":702.208,"body":"“No, don't uh don't tell it to not do this”"},{"startTime":702.208,"endTime":703.916,"body":"and others are saying “yes.”"},{"startTime":703.916,"endTime":705.333,"body":"There's no good answer yet."},{"startTime":705.333,"endTime":706.708,"body":"You gotta, you got to play with it."},{"startTime":706.708,"endTime":708.458,"body":"You got to figure out, you got to break it"},{"startTime":708.458,"endTime":710.958,"body":"and you got to see what's going to work best for your environment."},{"startTime":710.958,"endTime":715.0,"body":"That's the easiest thing to, you know, to really keep it in the fence."},{"startTime":716.083,"endTime":718.375,"body":"So it sounds like a key part is"},{"startTime":718.375,"endTime":721.75,"body":"leveraging those resources of to its own devices."},{"startTime":736.708,"endTime":739.958,"body":"This is a, a highly intelligent That's right."},{"startTime":745.166,"endTime":748.25,"body":"And the other thing that people forget,"},{"startTime":748.25,"endTime":751.708,"body":"you know, if you have bad processes, AI's not going to fix that."},{"startTime":752.166,"endTime":754.708,"body":"All it does is accelerate your bad processes."},{"startTime":754.708,"endTime":757.708,"body":"So you get to make bad decisions faster."},{"startTime":758.666,"endTime":760.708,"body":"And so that means you're going to go out of business faster."},{"startTime":760.708,"endTime":764.625,"body":"So you've gotta... you've got to have it as a broader strategy"},{"startTime":764.625,"endTime":768.708,"body":"that as you implement AI, you've got to implement change coordinated."},{"startTime":772.458,"endTime":774.625,"body":"If you just do one piece, you're missing,"},{"startTime":774.625,"endTime":777.458,"body":"you're missing a true opportunity to take too often any of us as humans when we see something new,"},{"startTime":785.083,"endTime":790.333,"body":"we can overestimate its ability to be by itself to fix things."},{"startTime":790.958,"endTime":795.375,"body":"And part of it is because the technology is so unknown"},{"startTime":795.375,"endTime":797.958,"body":"and we're not quite sure how to fit it into things."},{"startTime":798.375,"endTime":803.0,"body":"But the other part is this, is this hope and wish that it'll be easier."},{"startTime":803.458,"endTime":806.208,"body":"And we don't have to do the hard work, but"},{"startTime":806.208,"endTime":809.416,"body":"we will still need to do the hard work around process development"},{"startTime":809.416,"endTime":812.291,"body":"and having challenging conversations and"},{"startTime":812.291,"endTime":815.708,"body":"doing scenario planning and staying on top of this."},{"startTime":816.166,"endTime":817.0,"body":"Um,
