of the process"},{"startTime":304.666,"endTime":310.166,"body":"because any biases that you come into such a process with,"},{"startTime":310.166,"endTime":315.208,"body":"will only disrupt the ability to truly make connections"},{"startTime":315.208,"endTime":319.541,"body":"and to therefore truly create scenarios of proper communication."},{"startTime":320.416,"endTime":325.333,"body":"Now, it doesn't necessarily mean that the street doesn't go both ways,"},{"startTime":325.333,"endTime":328.291,"body":"and you can't be learning as well as teaching,"},{"startTime":328.291,"endTime":330.708,"body":"because both of those are important"},{"startTime":330.708,"endTime":334.041,"body":"and create levels of value between the parties involved."},{"startTime":334.708,"endTime":338.916,"body":"But you want to come into all of these kinds of scenarios"},{"startTime":338.916,"endTime":342.25,"body":"with a very open mind, disrupts or creates obstacles towards probably your end goal."},{"startTime":353.916,"endTime":355.333,"body":"So let's go one more step."},{"startTime":355.333,"endTime":361.291,"body":"How do you balance the stories that we will already tell ourselves?"},{"startTime":362.041,"endTime":364.75,"body":"And it's almost like two different kinds of stories."},{"startTime":364.916,"endTime":369.708,"body":"One is a story, and I love how you're talking about understanding the differences"},{"startTime":369.708,"endTime":373.125,"body":"of the other person, because there's always going to be somebody else."},{"startTime":373.666,"endTime":378.916,"body":"And so on the one hand, we might go in with a very ethnocentric,"},{"startTime":378.916,"endTime":381.125,"body":"very egocentric perspective,"},{"startTime":381.125,"endTime":383.0,"body":"and that's the story that we're saying."},{"startTime":383.291,"endTime":386.916,"body":"What we know is the right approach, clearly, because that's what we do,"},{"startTime":386.916,"endTime":389.583,"body":"and you, the other, needs to adapt."},{"startTime":390.166,"endTime":394.041,"body":"The other is maybe just as bad, I don't know."},{"startTime":394.458,"endTime":397.291,"body":"It's when you think you do know the other person."},{"startTime":398.5,"endTime":401.041,"body":"And, oh, I've been to that country,"},{"startTime":401.041,"endTime":404.083,"body":"or I've worked with people from that general area,"},{"startTime":404.083,"endTime":407.791,"body":"or something, and I know how it works, trust me."},{"startTime":408.416,"endTime":410.541,"body":"And you have a very distinct idea—"},{"startTime":410.541,"endTime":414.583,"body":"how do you, in both of those cases,"},{"startTime":414.583,"endTime":419.25,"body":"balance and keep that openness to keep learning?"},{"startTime":419.25,"endTime":421.416,"body":"because we ain't got it."},{"startTime":421.541,"endTime":425.333,"body":"You know, it's not, we never know all that we need to know."},{"startTime":425.583,"endTime":428.916,"body":"Anyway, how do you balance that to stay open to learn?"},{"startTime":429.083,"endTime":432.666,"body":"- I think the key is to be ever curious."},{"startTime":433.291,"endTime":436.083,"body":"You need to start with the right mentality"},{"startTime":436.083,"endTime":437.333,"body":"from the very, very beginning."},{"startTime":437.583,"endTime":440.291,"body":"And it really comes down to these fundamentals"},{"startTime":440.291,"endTime":442.416,"body":"that our parents taught us at a young age"},{"startTime":442.416,"endTime":445.458,"body":"of you know what it means to assume something."},{"startTime":445.875,"endTime":448.75,"body":"You know, it makes a something out of me and you, right,"},{"startTime":448.75,"endTime":452.583,"body":"this ideology around assumptions and what they bring."},{"startTime":453.375,"endTime":459.125,"body":"It is extremely, extremely valuable to come into these types of relationships and these"},{"startTime":459.125,"endTime":463.875,"body":"types of situations with a complete open-mindedness"},{"startTime":463.875,"endTime":468.166,"body":"to regardless of what you know or have done historically,"},{"startTime":468.166,"endTime":473.541,"body":"the willingness to learn and/or know how the other side operates"},{"startTime":473.541,"endTime":476.041,"body":"and does what they do and how they do what they do"},{"startTime":476.041,"endTime":480.291,"body":"and what their value sets are and so their morality,"},{"startTime":480.291,"endTime":483.458,"body":"all of these different components that come together"},{"startTime":483.458,"endTime":486.375,"body":"to really be able to get a true picture"},{"startTime":486.375,"endTime":489.208,"body":"of how this relationship is going to go forward."},{"startTime":489.625,"endTime":493.458,"body":"And when you have that openness and you're not"},{"startTime":493.458,"endTime":497.041,"body":"trying to sort of bend the other side to your will,"},{"startTime":497.041,"endTime":500.041,"body":"you get a more accurate picture as to what"},{"startTime":500.041,"endTime":503.291,"body":"the dynamics of that relationship are really going to look like."},{"startTime":503.75,"endTime":508.416,"body":"Because if you let it all loose and just kind of allow"},{"startTime":508.416,"endTime":513.166,"body":"the other side to showcase for you what it is that they truly are,"},{"startTime":513.166,"endTime":517.458,"body":"can do, are capable of and so on, you're either going to be surprised"},{"startTime":517.458,"endTime":521.666,"body":"very quickly in a good way or you're going to be surprised very quickly in a bad way."},{"startTime":522.0,"endTime":525.041,"body":"But either way, you're going to get an appropriate filter."},{"startTime":525.666,"endTime":530.291,"body":"You're going to get an appropriate picture of what this really looks like,"},{"startTime":530.291,"endTime":535.208,"body":"as opposed to coming into a scenario with a bunch of preconceived notions and saying,"},{"startTime":535.208,"endTime":537.458,"body":"\"Oh, you know, one day they'll get it,\""},{"startTime":537.458,"endTime":540.666,"body":"or \"One day they'll figure out the way that we do things.\""},{"startTime":540.958,"endTime":547.958,"body":"That will never really showcase for you what that relationship is going to be,"},{"startTime":547.958,"endTime":550.208,"body":"could be, could potentially be,"},{"startTime":550.208,"endTime":554.083,"body":"because you're already putting it in some level of a preconceived box."},{"startTime":554.583,"endTime":556.708,"body":"And when it comes to this type of work,"},{"startTime":556.708,"endTime":559.5,"body":"and it comes to this cross border"},{"startTime":559.5,"endTime":563.25,"body":"or cross cultural relationships and creating leadership,"},{"startTime":563.25,"endTime":565.083,"body":"you need to not be in a box."},{"startTime":565.083,"endTime":567.208,"body":"You need to understand what makes them tick,"},{"startTime":567.208,"endTime":568.875,"body":"what makes yourself tick,"},{"startTime":568.875,"endTime":570.75,"body":"and then figure out if there are dots"},{"startTime":570.75,"endTime":572.708,"body":"that can be connected or not at all."},{"startTime":573.208,"endTime":576.208,"body":"But I feel like the more preconceived notions"},{"startTime":576.208,"endTime":579.708,"body":"you come into with, the more assumptions you bring"},{"startTime":579.708,"endTime":582.75,"body":"and sort of trying to paint the picture"},{"startTime":582.75,"endTime":586.583,"body":"that you want to see, the less likely you're gonna get at"},{"startTime":586.583,"endTime":589.666,"body":"what's the true fundamentals of that relationship."},{"startTime":590.125,"endTime":593.0,"body":"- Yeah, those core principles of curiosity are powerful."},{"startTime":593.291,"endTime":595.166,"body":"That seems to be a theme that comes up"},{"startTime":595.166,"endTime":599.125,"body":"on many of these episodes, is we're trying to interact"},{"startTime":599.125,"endTime":601.333,"body":"and understand this fellow human,"},{"startTime":601.333,"endTime":604.791,"body":"or this fellow team of humans across a table,"},{"startTime":604.791,"endTime":607.583,"body":"across an ocean, whatever it might be,"},{"startTime":607.583,"endTime":608.5,"body":"what makes them tick."},{"startTime":609.0,"endTime":611.833,"body":"So I'm curious, Kerim, a little bit of—"},{"startTime":611.833,"endTime":614.875,"body":"let's jump back into your backstory a little Yes."},{"startTime":623.166,"endTime":625.958,"body":"- Like what led you to this field"},{"startTime":625.958,"endTime":628.416,"body":"and why are you so passionate about it?"},{"startTime":628.583,"endTime":632.0,"body":"- Well, I think most entrepreneurs"},{"startTime":632.0,"endTime":634.541,"body":"don't have a straight forward path."},{"startTime":634.708,"endTime":636.416,"body":"They do a lot of different things"},{"startTime":636.416,"endTime":638.375,"body":"and they sort of figure it out along the way."},{"startTime":638.791,"endTime":642.625,"body":"but there's some kind of a fundamental component"},{"startTime":642.625,"endTime":646.041,"body":"that is going to allow them to be successful"},{"startTime":646.041,"endTime":647.583,"body":"in their ultimate task,"},{"startTime":647.583,"endTime":648.75,"body":"even though they may have done things"},{"startTime":648.75,"endTime":650.208,"body":"that were in different industries"},{"startTime":650.208,"endTime":651.875,"body":"or different interest areas,"},{"startTime":651.875,"endTime":653.333,"body":"but something pulls it together."},{"startTime":653.333,"endTime":657.125,"body":"And for me, it was always languages"},{"startTime":657.125,"endTime":661.0,"body":"and it was having a multicultural type of experience,"},{"startTime":661.0,"endTime":663.916,"body":"being the son of immigrants,"},{"startTime":663.916,"endTime":665.791,"body":"speaking many languages at home,"},{"startTime":665.791,"endTime":667.25,"body":"being on my first plane"},{"startTime":667.25,"endTime":670.416,"body":"when I was probably three or four months old,"},{"startTime":670.416,"endTime":673.375,"body":"these things all sort of came together"},{"startTime":673.375,"endTime":676.75,"body":"to give me a sense that the world was not just my city"},{"startTime":676.75,"endTime":679.166,"body":"or my state or my country,"},{"startTime":679.166,"endTime":682.291,"body":"but it was a much bigger type of place"},{"startTime":682.291,"endTime":684.291,"body":"to live in and to operate within."},{"startTime":684.916,"endTime":687.541,"body":"And that began again from just my background,"},{"startTime":687.541,"endTime":689.083,"body":"who I am, who I was."},{"startTime":689.666,"endTime":692.666,"body":"And then through time in my various experiences"},{"startTime":692.666,"endTime":695.791,"body":"that I had both entrepreneurial and corporate,"},{"startTime":695.791,"endTime":697.666,"body":"I always was a problem solver."},{"startTime":698.166,"endTime":700.833,"body":"I always was a person who was looking to find"},{"startTime":700.833,"endTime":705.041,"body":"the best pathway forward, the more efficient outcome,"},{"startTime":705.041,"endTime":710.75,"body":"the way to solve problems that may or may not even exist yet"},{"startTime":710.75,"endTime":714.333,"body":"and connect the dots that many others may or may not see."},{"startTime":715.083,"endTime":717.875,"body":"Again, back to this curiosity side of things"},{"startTime":717.875,"endTime":719.166,"body":"and not just being curious,"},{"startTime":719.166,"endTime":721.375,"body":"but let's do something about these things"},{"startTime":721.375,"endTime":724.416,"body":"that we find out that we determined through our curiosity."},{"startTime":725.166,"endTime":729.083,"body":"And this reverberated through, again, most of my life."},{"startTime":730.375,"endTime":733.833,"body":"Whether it was starting to sell blueberries"},{"startTime":733.833,"endTime":735.833,"body":"on the street corner at a young age,"},{"startTime":735.833,"endTime":739.5,"body":"or shirts in the mall, or creating my first dot com,"},{"startTime":739.5,"endTime":741.541,"body":"or working in a consulting firm"},{"startTime":741.541,"endTime":744.041,"body":"and creating new initiatives and programs,"},{"startTime":744.041,"endTime":746.791,"body":"or at large scale regulatory bodies"},{"startTime":746.791,"endTime":748.708,"body":"like the Securities and Exchange Commission,"},{"startTime":748.708,"endTime":751.833,"body":"or NASD, where I built programs"},{"startTime":751.833,"endTime":754.75,"body":"and created efficient protocols and so on."},{"startTime":755.291,"endTime":759.708,"body":"And ultimately, somewhere in your experiences,"},{"startTime":759.708,"endTime":761.833,"body":"you start to connect those dots and say,"},{"startTime":761.833,"endTime":766.166,"body":"I love tech and I love languages and people"},{"startTime":766.166,"endTime":768.416,"body":"and cross border and efficiency"},{"startTime":768.416,"endTime":769.875,"body":"and some level of regulation."},{"startTime":770.125,"endTime":773.0,"body":"And then you then start to apply it."},{"startTime":773.0,"endTime":776.833,"body":"Well, in my case, the industry was the supply chain"},{"startTime":776.833,"endTime":780.666,"body":"because it had been overly fragmented for so long,"},{"startTime":780.666,"endTime":784.083,"body":"continues to be disrupted very, very easily"},{"startTime":784.083,"endTime":785.791,"body":"by things that are controllable"},{"startTime":785.791,"endTime":788.166,"body":"and things that are not controllable"},{"startTime":788.166,"endTime":791.208,"body":"and touches every single one of our lives"},{"startTime":791.208,"endTime":792.375,"body":"in so many different ways."},{"startTime":792.375,"endTime":794.916,"body":"And we know that when we don't have toilet paper"},{"startTime":794.916,"endTime":795.75,"body":"on the shelves."},{"startTime":795.916,"endTime":799.25,"body":"We know that when we can't get the products"},{"startTime":799.25,"endTime":800.083,"body":"when we need them,"},{"startTime":800.083,"endTime":803.166,"body":"or when there's major disruptions because of tariffs"},{"startTime":803.166,"endTime":805.166,"body":"or a pandemic or whatever it may be."},{"startTime":805.666,"endTime":809.166,"body":"And I found this to be a very fascinating industry"},{"startTime":809.166,"endTime":811.291,"body":"and pulling together these various experiences"},{"startTime":811.291,"endTime":814.333,"body":"that I had both entrepreneurial and multicultural"},{"startTime":814.333,"endTime":818.583,"body":"and business-wise, corporate and so forth"},{"startTime":818.583,"endTime":821.125,"body":"to then apply it to this industry"},{"startTime":821.125,"endTime":823.75,"body":"which continues to still have challenges,"},{"startTime":823.75,"endTime":825.75,"body":"continues to still have disruptions"},{"startTime":825.75,"endTime":828.833,"body":"because that's innate to what this industry is."},{"startTime":829.166,"endTime":832.875,"body":"And so I've spent more than two decades"},{"startTime":832.875,"endTime":836.708,"body":"working on best practices, protocols, methodologies"},{"startTime":836.708,"endTime":840.583,"body":"and now a lot of thought leadership and educational"},{"startTime":840.583,"endTime":846.125,"body":"mechanisms to promote the thought processes and the ideas"},{"startTime":846.125,"endTime":848.708,"body":"that I have stood by and have allowed us"},{"startTime":848.708,"endTime":851.0,"body":"to be successful with for the past,"},{"startTime":851.0,"endTime":852.791,"body":"more than two decades in this space."},{"startTime":855.791,"endTime":859.708,"body":"- That's such a great story to see how it emerges."},{"startTime":860.041,"endTime":863.416,"body":"And it's always fun when you look back on one's own story"},{"startTime":863.416,"endTime":865.583,"body":"and you can see some of the large scale organizations like that"},{"startTime":1798.375,"endTime":1803.75,"body":"take a long time to make hiring decisions because they do exactly that."},{"startTime":1804.291,"endTime":1806.583,"body":"They essentially say, hey, we're gonna have a first meeting"},{"startTime":1806.583,"endTime":1807.75,"body":"just to kind of get to know you."},{"startTime":1808.333,"endTime":1809.5,"body":"Then we're gonna have another meeting,"},{"startTime":1809.5,"endTime":1812.041,"body":"which is going to be about sort of a little deeper."},{"startTime":1812.666,"endTime":1816.875,"body":"Then we're going to get into a scenario with like a situational type of a meeting and then"},{"startTime":1816.875,"endTime":1819.791,"body":"we're going to get into a meeting where it's not just one person one-on-one,"},{"startTime":1819.791,"endTime":1824.791,"body":"it's like one-on-five in a group and see how you interact, talk and dialogue."},{"startTime":1825.25,"endTime":1829.125,"body":"And so you end up having five or six different quote-unquote interviews"},{"startTime":1829.125,"endTime":1833.666,"body":"until they can truly get a sense of who you are and how you sort of operate and doesn't even just apply to the workforce, it also applies to some universities."},{"startTime":1846.583,"endTime":1850.583,"body":"You know, we all have children that are maybe of college age"},{"startTime":1850.583,"endTime":1853.541,"body":"or getting close to it, and the interviewing"},{"startTime":1853.541,"endTime":1855.708,"body":"process has also dramatically changed,"},{"startTime":1855.708,"endTime":1859.958,"body":"where they want to see that you go there, they want to see that you've met with
