center,"},{"startTime":327.541,"endTime":330.5,"body":"the first question I ask is really, who are you?"},{"startTime":330.958,"endTime":333.291,"body":"Like, who are you when no one else is watching?"},{"startTime":333.791,"endTime":339.708,"body":"Because when you're clear about who you are and your why, whether someone is"},{"startTime":339.708,"endTime":345.541,"body":"watching or, or not, you're going to get back to that center because you're"},{"startTime":345.541,"endTime":348.375,"body":"leading from yourself and your identity."},{"startTime":349.125,"endTime":351.0,"body":"And so that's the first question that I'll ask."},{"startTime":351.291,"endTime":357.333,"body":"I'll go through a series of exercises and, and check boxes in my, my leadership"},{"startTime":357.333,"endTime":361.083,"body":"coaching, but that's really the center point of who are you when no one's"},{"startTime":361.083,"endTime":366.208,"body":"watching when you strip the title, when you strip the job,"},{"startTime":366.208,"endTime":367.291,"body":"who are you as a leader?"},{"startTime":367.583,"endTime":370.083,"body":"And I'll talk about this a little balancing"},{"startTime":423.375,"endTime":428.833,"body":"that sometimes can challenge our why and challenge us"},{"startTime":428.833,"endTime":431.791,"body":"so we're not necessarily showing up as leaders"},{"startTime":435.541,"endTime":439.041,"body":"that I work with, which typically are black males"},{"startTime":439.041,"endTime":443.041,"body":"navigating the leadership space from mid-level manager"},{"startTime":443.041,"endTime":445.5,"body":"to senior level manager roles."},{"startTime":445.75,"endTime":449.75,"body":"And what I find is that often those individuals"},{"startTime":449.75,"endTime":451.958,"body":"who are navigating those spaces"},{"startTime":451.958,"endTime":457.291,"body":"are often either code switching to fit into"},{"startTime":457.291,"endTime":460.333,"body":"another language, another culture"},{"startTime":460.333,"endTime":462.0,"body":"that they're unfamiliar with."},{"startTime":462.458,"endTime":468.333,"body":"And oftentimes that's led through a series of fear of,"},{"startTime":468.333,"endTime":471.5,"body":"it can lead to the loss of identity"},{"startTime":471.5,"endTime":473.75,"body":"in that shifting of who you are,"},{"startTime":473.75,"endTime":477.083,"body":"because again, you're trying to meet the expectations"},{"startTime":477.083,"endTime":477.916,"body":"of others."},{"startTime":479.333,"endTime":483.666,"body":"And over time, it sort of happens by chance."},{"startTime":483.666,"endTime":489.083,"body":"I talk a lot about your mask versus your mirror"},{"startTime":489.083,"endTime":493.25,"body":"and the mask being the person or the persona"},{"startTime":493.25,"endTime":498.208,"body":"that you think others deserve or want"},{"startTime":498.208,"endTime":500.708,"body":"in the leadership space versus your mirror,"},{"startTime":500.708,"endTime":503.541,"body":"which is your reflection, who you are,"},{"startTime":503.541,"endTime":506.333,"body":"when no one's watching again, you're just yourself."},{"startTime":506.833,"endTime":511.166,"body":"And there's a tug and pull between both of those things."},{"startTime":512.25,"endTime":516.333,"body":"Over time, I think people forget who workplace."},{"startTime":561.541,"endTime":565.416,"body":"It's the person you feel other people think you need to be."},{"startTime":566.5,"endTime":570.208,"body":"As opposed to, all right, mask off, this is just,"},{"startTime":570.208,"endTime":572.416,"body":"this is me, this is what I see in the mirror."},{"startTime":572.791,"endTime":576.041,"body":"And I think that we can all relate"},{"startTime":576.041,"endTime":577.916,"body":"to that analogy very clearly."},{"startTime":578.791,"endTime":582.666,"body":"And so as you think about that and as you're sharing it,"},{"startTime":582.666,"endTime":586.625,"body":"it's like, how can people really show up?"},{"startTime":586.833,"endTime":588.583,"body":"And I think particularly as you're pulling in"},{"startTime":588.583,"endTime":591.416,"body":"most of your clientele you're working with, black men."},{"startTime":591.916,"endTime":594.916,"body":"And I think so it takes on a different context"},{"startTime":594.916,"endTime":596.375,"body":"when we're talking about individuals"},{"startTime":596.375,"endTime":600.791,"body":"who may be from a different minority ethnic group"},{"startTime":600.791,"endTime":605.833,"body":"who are trying to be themselves in as a minority,"},{"startTime":605.833,"endTime":609.208,"body":"you know, in a culture or context"},{"startTime":609.208,"endTime":610.625,"body":"that they're not the majority."},{"startTime":611.125,"endTime":615.291,"body":"So how do you still maintain, but yet progress?"},{"startTime":615.416,"endTime":617.291,"body":"I mean, it's a fine balance."},{"startTime":618.25,"endTime":624.416,"body":"Yeah, definitely. It's a strategic balance where you're centering yourself,"},{"startTime":624.416,"endTime":627.708,"body":"but also managing the perspective of others,"},{"startTime":627.708,"endTime":632.291,"body":"especially in leadership, managing the emotions of others"},{"startTime":632.291,"endTime":635.083,"body":"around you and their perception of who you are."},{"startTime":635.666,"endTime":639.125,"body":"I think it's a challenging tug of war,"},{"startTime":639.125,"endTime":642.25,"body":"but there are many ways to be strategic"},{"startTime":642.25,"endTime":645.5,"body":"around that process while still owning who you are."},{"startTime":646.083,"endTime":651.625,"body":"I often suggest that as you grow in your leadership"},{"startTime":651.625,"endTime":654.416,"body":"to really create that community around you,"},{"startTime":654.416,"endTime":656.208,"body":"whether that's in the workplace,"},{"startTime":656.208,"endTime":657.75,"body":"outside of the workplace,"},{"startTime":657.75,"endTime":660.458,"body":"because there's a point where you"},{"startTime":660.458,"endTime":664.666,"body":"you're sort of in this inflection point of"},{"startTime":664.666,"endTime":667.625,"body":"do you get lost in the performative nature of leadership?"},{"startTime":668.0,"endTime":670.916,"body":"Or do you continue centering who you are"},{"startTime":670.916,"endTime":673.791,"body":"along your entire journey around your you"},{"startTime":678.791,"endTime":682.125,"body":"move through leadership, because things are always going to test you."},{"startTime":682.666,"endTime":685.666,"body":"People will test you, situations will test you."},{"startTime":685.708,"endTime":687.166,"body":"And it's really about centering."},{"startTime":687.166,"endTime":689.583,"body":"And I encourage people to develop"},{"startTime":689.583,"endTime":692.75,"body":"that community who could call you out, who could call you"},{"startTime":692.75,"endTime":696.541,"body":"forward when they see you drifting from that center point"},{"startTime":696.541,"endTime":698.041,"body":"of your why and who you sometimes"},{"startTime":705.458,"endTime":708.5,"body":"to look and kind of divide out into two,"},{"startTime":708.5,"endTime":712.541,"body":"like a dichotomy of I either need to be true to myself,"},{"startTime":712.541,"endTime":716.958,"body":"or I then change myself to appeal"},{"startTime":716.958,"endTime":720.875,"body":"to all of these other groups and stakeholders and influences."},{"startTime":721.666,"endTime":726.125,"body":"And yet, that is not always helpful,"},{"startTime":726.125,"endTime":728.083,"body":"because we still need to be in the world."},{"startTime":728.5,"endTime":731.75,"body":"we want to make a difference, we want to be able to move things forward,"},{"startTime":731.75,"endTime":735.708,"body":"and we need to interact with a variety of circumstances and contexts."},{"startTime":735.958,"endTime":739.208,"body":"And so it becomes more like a duality that we're"},{"startTime":739.208,"endTime":745.25,"body":"continuing to balance self versus how others have these expectations."},{"startTime":745.708,"endTime":748.666,"body":"And yet that balance can get out of whack."},{"startTime":750.958,"endTime":755.458,"body":"Talk to us more in terms of how do you keep that balance in check?"},{"startTime":755.75,"endTime":760.708,"body":"And what are the signs that you know that you've gone too far,"},{"startTime":760.708,"endTime":765.125,"body":"because you could go too far in either extreme in some this."},{"startTime":816.75,"endTime":817.5,"body":"Let's take a risk."},{"startTime":817.875,"endTime":823.458,"body":"And I love that development of people, but you can get lost in that process"},{"startTime":823.458,"endTime":830.958,"body":"on either extreme of either overly centering who you are and only seeing"},{"startTime":830.958,"endTime":835.0,"body":"yourself or you're getting lost in the performative nature of leadership"},{"startTime":835.0,"endTime":839.125,"body":"and you get lost in the how of how do you move think that's true leadership, when you could see the room"},{"startTime":881.083,"endTime":883.541,"body":"and understand what's happening from all
