Love Under Surveillance: The Truth About Dating Inside the Cult

In this episode, I open up about a part of cult life I’ve never fully unpacked in one place: what it meant to navigate relationships—romantic ones—while still inside the group. Dating wasn’t a normal developmental experience. It wasn’t playful or curious or exploratory. It was shaped by fear, spiritual consequences, and unspoken rules meant to keep everyone in line.
I talk about the subtle and not‑so‑subtle pressures, the way partners were evaluated through the lens of “spiritual suitability,” and how my own needs were often labeled as ego, attachment, or sin. These dynamics didn’t just affect who I dated; they shaped how I saw myself for years afterward.
And alongside all of this is the story I’ve carried quietly: the house my parents gave me — a gift meant to offer stability — and how I ended up giving it to the minister under an agreement that was never honored. I share what it felt like to believe obedience was holiness, to trust the system more than myself, and the grief of realizing I had been taken advantage of at a moment when I truly thought I was doing the right thing.
Healing didn’t arrive immediately. It didn’t arrive when I left. It has come in waves, at strange moments, through tiny shifts.
Lately, one of the most grounding practices has been walking in the early morning and letting the sunlight hit my skin. The quiet. The air. The simple reminder that I exist outside of someone else’s rules. Light has been my antidepressant this week — not metaphorically, but physiologically, emotionally, spiritually.
This episode is about reclaiming autonomy, piece by piece, story by story, step by step.
