When Shame Becomes a Weapon: My Collapse and Awakening

In this deeply personal episode of How to Leave a Cult, I share one of the most painful chapters of my life—when shame, control, and isolation collided and nearly broke me.
After the end of a relationship, the weight of judgment from Dr. Duran and other ministers left me drowning in guilt and self-doubt. I was told to withdraw, to stay home, to disconnect—and as I obeyed, I became increasingly isolated while others continued on as if nothing had changed. The silence was deafening.
The emotional toll quickly turned physical. Overwhelmed by stress, I began experiencing severe exhaustion, heart palpitations, and eventually collapsed at work. Despite seeking medical help, I was left without clear answers—only more confusion and fear. At the same time, I was working three jobs, including one within the cult that barely paid, trying to support myself and my two children as a single mom.
In my vulnerability, I was given dangerous guidance—encouraged to cope in ways that only deepened the harm. Alcohol, medication, and mounting stress intensified what my body was already screaming: something had to change.
This episode is about that breaking point—and the clarity that followed.
I share the moment I made three life-altering decisions:
- To prioritize my health
- To prioritize my children and family
- To prioritize my financial stability
Those decisions set me on a new path, including returning to school to pursue my bachelor’s degree and reclaiming control over my life.
We also explore the powerful connection between emotional trauma and physical illness—the idea that “dis-ease” manifests in the body—and how books like The Biology of Belief and The Placebo Effect helped me begin to understand what I was experiencing.
If you’ve ever felt trapped, silenced, or overwhelmed to the point your body starts to break down, this episode is for you. You are not alone—and there is a way forward.
