Happy Monday everyone, and welcome to the Kids Morning News Network. It's May 20th, 2024. I'm Alex in the Camden studio in New York.
00;00;29;14 - 00;00;35;00
Speaker 1
It's the day you wait all year for National Quiche Lorraine Day.
00;00;35;00 - 00;00;39;19
Speaker 1
If you haven't been waiting all year, then I'm guessing you haven't tried Quiche Lorraine.
00;00;39;19 - 00;00;44;00
Speaker 1
it's bacon, eggs, and sometimes cheese in a pie crust.
00;00;44;02 - 00;01;04;12
Speaker 1
And if you think food on a stick is good, do yourself a favor and add food in a pie crust to the list of awesome. Quiche is a French dish, but it's from the part of France that's next to Germany. So food there has a lot of German influence. The word quiche may actually come from a German word.
00;01;04;16 - 00;01;15;02
Speaker 1
Anyway, Quiche Lorraine is easy to make and taste really, really good. So if you're looking for something to cook with your grown up, I say check it out.
00;01;22;14 - 00;01;32;20
Speaker 1
Ever think about what you want to be when you grow up? Whatever it is, it might seem like it's going to take a long time to get there. You might have to go to school. You might have to be an apprentice.
00;01;32;20 - 00;01;36;04
Speaker 1
You might have to have years of training or experience.
00;01;36;04 - 00;01;45;06
Speaker 1
Well, yesterday, a man named Ed Dwight blasted off into outer space aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket.
00;01;45;09 - 00;02;11;15
Speaker 1
His first trip into space. And Captain Dwight, he used to be in the Air Force, has been waiting a long time to take this rocket flight. He was selected as an astronaut candidate in 1961, 64 years ago, the first black American to be picked for astronaut training. But he was never given the chance to fly into space.
00;02;11;15 - 00;02;18;29
Speaker 1
Captain Dwight is now 90, and as of yesterday, he is the oldest person ever to go into outer space.
00;02;19;01 - 00;02;23;12
Speaker 1
The flight lasted about ten minutes, and while it didn't orbit the Earth
00;02;23;12 - 00;02;35;19
Speaker 1
or fly around it, it did go high enough for the six crew members to be weightless for a little while. More than 347,000ft up.
00;02;35;19 - 00;02;42;18
Speaker 1
Blue Origin's rocket blasted off from a ranch in Texas, and after the flight, it landed right near its launch site.
00;02;42;18 - 00;02;54;09
Speaker 1
After leaving the Air Force, Ed Dwight became a businessman and a famous sculptor. He said that after leaving the Air Force, he hadn't thought about ever going into space. But after this flight,
00;02;54;09 - 00;02;59;01
Speaker 1
he said he didn't know he needed to do this, but he needed to do this.
00;02;59;01 - 00;03;07;20
Speaker 1
Now, passengers usually pay for their seats on a Blue Origin flight, but in honor of his place in history, Captain Dwight got a free pass.
00;03;07;20 - 00;03;11;00
Speaker 1
Congratulations on making history again.
00;03;11;02 - 00;03;12;26
Speaker 1
Captain Ed Dwight.
00;03;12;26 - 00;03;14;20
Speaker 1
And welcome back to Earth.
00;03;16;27 - 00;03;43;00
Speaker 1
Everyone knows that dinosaurs were cold blooded, right? Like lizards, they couldn't make body heat. So if things got cold, they just shut down. Well maybe not. New research says that some dinosaurs lived in cold regions, even the Arctic, meaning they may have developed the ability to make body heat. Those dinosaurs include some of the big meat eaters, like Tyrannosaurus rex.
00;03;43;11 - 00;03;49;14
Speaker 1
But the even bigger plant eaters like Brontosaurus probably weren't warm blooded,
00;03;49;14 - 00;03;59;17
Speaker 1
warm blooded animals need more food, and finding enough plants to keep a warm blooded animal the size of a Brontosaurus going might have been impossible.
00;03;59;17 - 00;04;10;05
Speaker 1
But we have to point out here that everything about dinosaurs is kind of a guess, and the evidence scientists have to work with is usually not great.
00;04;10;08 - 00;04;24;12
Speaker 1
And so different scientists often have different opinions about what the evidence shows. And yes, there are scientists who say it was actually the plant eaters who were better adapted for cold environments, and then meat eaters who weren't.
00;04;24;12 - 00;04;31;24
Speaker 1
Well, one thing all the scientists can agree on we can't ask the dinosaurs themselves, so we'll have to keep looking for answers.
00;04;39;25 - 00;04;48;11
Speaker 1
it's riddle time. Friday's riddle was kids make me a lot. But never see or hold me. What am I? The answer.
00;04;48;11 - 00;04;50;03
Speaker 1
Noise.
00;04;50;11 - 00;05;06;16
Speaker 1
All right. Today's riddle is kind of a math riddle. Two is company and three is a crowd. So, what are four and five? I'll say it again. Two is company and three is a crowd. So what are four and five
00;05;06;16 - 00;05;07;14
Speaker 1
give you the answer
00;05;12;11 - 00;05;18;27
Speaker 1
Today is the birthday of maybe the most American piece of clothing ever. Blue jeans.
00;05;18;27 - 00;05;22;14
Speaker 1
Okay, imagine you're living in 1853.
00;05;22;14 - 00;05;26;06
Speaker 1
It's a time of cowboys, miners, and the Wild West.
00;05;26;12 - 00;05;36;16
Speaker 1
At that time, there was a young man named Levi Strauss who grew up in Germany and was living in New York City, but decided to move to San Francisco.
00;05;36;16 - 00;05;46;05
Speaker 1
There were a lot of gold miners in San Francisco, and Levi set up a shop to sell them things they needed, like tough pants that could handle a rough and tumble lifestyle.
00;05;46;08 - 00;05;51;14
Speaker 1
One day, a tailor he knew named Jacob Davis wrote to Levi with a problem.
00;05;51;14 - 00;05;56;01
Speaker 1
Miners kept ripping the pockets out of their pants while they were working.
00;05;56;01 - 00;06;03;18
Speaker 1
Jacob had an idea put metal rivets into the pockets to make them stronger. Levi loved it.
00;06;03;20 - 00;06;19;04
Speaker 1
And on this day in 1873, they got a patent, which is basically special permission to make these super strong pants. They called them waist overalls, but we know them today as blue jeans.
00;06;19;04 - 00;06;26;24
Speaker 1
Levi's riveted jeans were a huge hit. Miners, cowboys and railroad workers loved their durability.
00;06;26;24 - 00;06;33;22
Speaker 1
And today, they're worn by people all over the world, from movie stars to, well, folks like you and me.
00;06;33;27 - 00;06;34;09
Speaker 1
ha.
00;06;39;00 - 00;06;53;18
Speaker 1
Well, it looks like a warm day today across a lot of the country. You might see some rain across the northern Rockies and northern Plains. Also, Florida and around the Great Lakes in the southwest deserts. There could be high winds this afternoon and evening.
00;06;55;26 - 00;07;03;11
Speaker 1
That's the show. Thank you very much for listening. If you liked it, please give it a like on your podcast app and subscribe.
