Carly W:and Carly Wilson delivering the latest scoop from the digital realm. Apple Intelligence, a feature announced with iOS 18, has seen a significant omission from Meta's suite of apps, a decision reported by Sorcererhat Tech. Users have noted the absence of features like Writing Tools and Genmoji in popular Meta applications such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Threads. Typically available to iPhone and iPad users, these tools allow for text creation and editing with AI, yet they remain inaccessible within Meta's platforms. Additionally, Instagram users can no longer use keyboard stickers or Memoji in their Stories. Meta has not provided a reason for excluding these Apple features, but speculation suggests promoting their own Meta AI services could be a factor. This decision follows a history of tension between Apple and Meta, including disagreements over privacy policies and a scrapped partnership involving Meta's language model, Llama. As a result, iOS users miss out on integrated Apple Intelligence features in widely-used apps. There remains hope that Meta might reconsider its stance in the future. Tech journalist Filipe Espósito has covered this development, highlighting the ongoing friction between the tech giants.
Adam N2:Google has announced that its AI-powered feature in the Gemini app, called Gemini Live, will be available for free to all Android users. Initially, this feature was intended to be locked behind a Gemini Advanced subscription. Launched earlier this month, it was initially available only on Pixel 9 and Samsung Galaxy S25 devices. Google has responded to positive feedback by making this feature free of charge. The rollout began today and will extend over several weeks. Gemini Live allows users to utilize their cameras to obtain information instantly from their surroundings. This move follows a similar announcement from Microsoft regarding its own AI tool, Copilot Vision, which is now free in the Edge browser. The competition between tech giants continues to bring advanced AI features to a broader audience. With this shift, Google aims to enhance the accessibility and usability of AI technology for Android users. The Wikimedia Foundation has partnered with Kaggle to release a machine-learning optimized dataset of Wikipedia content. This initiative aims to deter AI developers from scraping Wikipedia, which currently strains the platform's servers. The dataset, available in English and French, is designed to support AI model training by providing structured content. It includes components like research summaries, short descriptions, and infobox data but excludes references and non-textual elements. This collaboration with Kaggle, a Google-owned data science platform, enhances accessibility to machine-readable data. It represents a strategic move to offer a viable alternative for developers and data scientists. Wikimedia already collaborates with Google and the Internet Archive, but this partnership broadens accessibility. Kaggle's partnerships lead, Brenda Flynn, expressed enthusiasm for hosting the data, emphasizing its importance for the machine-learning community. This development is expected to facilitate better AI workflows without the adverse impact of data scraping.
Carly W:Open A.I has announced the release of its latest AI model, o3, capable of"thinking with images," which transforms how AI understands and analyzes sketches and diagrams. This new reasoning model follows the introduction of Open A.I's o1 model, which focused on solving complex problems. Alongside o3, Open A.I introduced a smaller, faster, and cost-effective model called o4-mini. These advancements allow users to upload images for discussion and analysis, integrating image-editing tools like rotation and zooming. Open A.I aims to stay competitive in the generative AI space dominated by Google, Anthropic, and xAI by harnessing multi-modal capabilities in Chat G.P.T tools. The o3 model is particularly oriented toward math, coding, and science, enhancing its image analytical prowess. Reflecting on its quirky model names, C.E.O Sam Altman jested on social media about revamping the naming system. Both models have undergone rigorous safety testing, though recent policy changes have sparked criticism concerning safety precautions. Open A.I has lifted the requirement for certain safety tests on fine-tuned models and omitted publishing a"model card" for its G.P.T-4.1. The company's willingness to adapt safety protocols addresses competitive pressures from other AI developers. Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, is making strides with its Grok chatbot, aiming to match capabilities with leaders like Chat G.P.T and Google's Gemini. A new"memory" feature was announced, allowing Grok to remember details from past user interactions. This will enable Grok to offer personalized responses after learning user preferences. Chat G.P.T and Gemini already have similar memory functionalities, enhancing user experience with customized replies. Official communication indicates Grok's memory feature offers transparency, letting users see and manage what the bot remembers. Currently in beta, this feature is accessible via Grok's website and its mobile apps on iOS and Android. However, it is not available for users in the EU or U.K. Users can disable this feature through the Data Controls page in settings. Additionally, specific memory instances can be deleted directly in the chat interface. This development marks a significant enhancement in Grok's competitive positioning in the chatbot market.
